At the intersection of Bixler and Balfour Roads, across from The Lakes home community in Discovery Bay, one can see the first stages of what will soon be Tess's Farm Market. The property is designed to have the look and feel of a large Italian estate including a winery-style farm market, glass house, orchards, row crops, and flowers. The farm market, catering to busy people who care about what they eat, will sell gourmet jams and items made from local crops. There will also be a commercial kitchen, local wine tasting and sales area, specialty retail area, and much more. The life long dream and vision of Discovery Bay resident, Barbara Frantz, Tess's Farm Market will be both upscale in appearance and in level of service, as it aims to complement the community it serves. Expect cooking classes, agricultural and green living seminars, organic and pesticide-free produce options, online produce ordering, pre-made meals, drive-through produce pick-ups for busy families, and a beautiful place for both children and adult groups to tour and learn about local agriculture. "While preserving the ag-core that surrounds us, we deserve a place where the produce is healthy, fresh, and culturally integrated within the community," Frantz believes. This large project has taken years in the planning, and is scheduled for final approval by the Contra Costa County Zoning Administrator on November 17. While this project is expected to clear all of it's hurdles, those who would like to ensure it's success should be present at the Nov. 17 hearing, 1:30 pm, at the Contra Costa County Supervisor's chambers. Or, contact the Zoning Administrator at (925) 335-1210. Citizens-of-the-Year, Todd & Heather Pastorini! Discovery Bay's highest honors were awarded for the 2008 Citizen of the Year, Business of the Year, and Teacher of the Year, at October's State of the Town Banquet, sponsored by the Discovery Bay Chamber of Commerce. Top honors went to Citizens of the Year, Todd and Heather Pastorini, for their work to reduce crime within the community. Chamber officials stated this was a close race this year, with other well-respected nominees: Laura & Tyler Page, who have raised over $50,000 for children through their Kidz Helping Kids fundraising efforts; David Ciruli, who has taken leadership roles throughout the community for over a decade; Shannon Skinner-Jones, who leads the charge for a community library; and Debbie Doll, who has spent years leading efforts to benefit the children of Discovery Bay. Business Person of the Year was awarded to Greg Spivak, whose important work at Hannah Nicole Vineyards earned him the respect of organizations he helps contribute to, and of his customers and colleagues. This was also a very close race, with outstanding business people like: Michael Temby, who raised thousands for foster children through his annual ski show; Rob Green, of Cojo Bay Advisors, who has top leadership roles in school, business, and library efforts; ACS Marine, Aladino's Pizza, and the Sports Bar & Steakhouse for their community support, and Ben Smith, owner of well-respected Aadvantage Carpet Cleaning. Teacher of the Year was awarded to Timber Point Kindergarten Teacher, Carol Elder. See the Business Update Page inside this issue for more photos from this great event.
