AROUND THE BAY
Fishing Report
for April
The fishing in July should continue to be
good. June was very good when the wind let
us get to the fish. Croakers have been the
bait of choice for the trout. Live shrimp
under popping corks have also taken their
fair share. East Galveston Bay continues to
be the “hot spot”. Hanna’s Reef, Whitehead
Reef, and Deep Reef are a few of the really
good reefs that are paying off for most
fishermen. Little Hanna’s Reef has also been
good. The location of these reefs can be
found on all the “Hot Spot” maps. Trinity
Bay has finally “salted up” from earlier rains
up the Trinity River. This bay is going to bust
wide open by July. The gas wells in Trinity
Bay will all be full of trout and reds. Other
spots that will be good are West Galveston
Bay, and Campbell’s Bayou areas. The Ship
Channel spoil areas from markers 44-54 are
holding trout, gafftops, and the occasional
school of reds. Now for a warning to all
boaters! Galveston Bay is being covered
with seismograph cables. These cables are
a couple of hundred yards apart and strung
pretty much across East Galveston Bay and
Trinity Bay. It’s very dangerous to run the
Bays in the dark or even low light, Watch for
the cane poles and try to stay in the middle
or between the poles. Also watch for the
“floats” and stay between these. I don’t know
how long these cables will be there, but
as long as they are there, they are a danger.
I’ve had requests to go into more detail in
my reports. There just isn’t space for much
detail. If you have questions, give me a call
after 3:00 P.M. I’m usually home by then.
Be careful, be safe, and take advantage of the
great fishing we have thissSummer. See you
on the water, BUT NOT TOO CLOSE!
