DELTA SUN TIMES • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 1 SHERIFF’S ACTIVITY REPORT, PAGE 9 Discovery Bay Celebrates it’s Finest Discovery Bay community leaders, business leaders, school administrators and residents gathered together on January 19 for the Discovery Bay Chamber of Commerce annual State of the Town Gala. This event included prestigious speakers, including Senator Mark DeSaulnier , Assemblyman Jim Frazier, Discovery Bay CSD Director Chris Steele, Chamber President Rita Caruso, BUSD Superintendant Ken Jacopetti, and Delta advocate Mike Guzzardo. This sold out event highlight is the awards ceremony. Many months of public voting were held online, to determine who would be honored. Awards were presented to these fine individuals… Citizen of the Year: Jim Mattison Jim Mattison is a member of the Discovery Bay Lions Club, served as Town of Discovery Bay CSD Director, and his role on the Community Center committee was essential in the process to acquire the Discovery Bay Athletic Club for the long awaited center. Mattison also organizes the summer concert series presented by the Discovery Bay Lions Club, and is the former CYO Director. Mattison will enjoy the title for a full year, as the Citizen of the Year is also the Parade of Lights Grand Marshall, in December. Teacher of the Year: Kevin Lindell Kevin Lindell is an 8th grade math teacher at Excelsior Middle School, and was previously a 2nd grade teacher at Timber Point Elementary School. Two of his students took turns sharing stories about their teacher and A DoveMedia, Inc. Production ©2013 January / February offering their praise for his fun and effective teaching methods. Business of the Year: Intero Real Estate Leeanne and Bryan Hogge proudly accepted the award for business of the year, on behalf of their business, Intero Real Estate. Both praised their team for their community involvement and outstanding service to clients. Intero Real Estate sponsors most every community event, and is a strong supporter of schools. Town Hall - Delta Water Meeting Wednesday, February 13 6:30pm Updates on the Peripheral Canal and how it will impact our Discovery Bay Community See Restore the Delta’s “Over Troubled Water” Discovery Bay Elelmentary Gymnasium 1700 Willow Lake Road, Discovery Bay Save the California Delta Alliance (STCDA) President’s Circle Award: Cathie Marples This award is decided by the past, current, and incoming presidents of the Discovery Bay Chamber of Commerce. IT is their highest honor to a member that has served the community year after year, and is an inspirational model of what a great community member can be. Cathie Marples has been serving the Discovery Bay for more than 30 years, helping to develop and market the Discovery Bay lifestyle, and supporting local causes, from school fundraisers and youth activities, to the American Cancer Society. Valentine’s Day Specials Another highlight of the evening was the thousands of dollars raised for the Byron Union School District Odyssey of the Mind Program, an academic competition program for gifted students. Both silent and live auction donations - from dozens of business people and community members - made this activity successful, and is a testament to the Chamber of Commerce support of Discovery Bay’s best and brightest young minds.
