THE COAT OF ARMS OF
THE MOST REVEREND THOMAS A. DALY
BISHOP OF SPOKANE
The episcopal heraldic achievement, or bishop’s coat of arms, is composed of a shield, which
is the central and most important part of the design and tells to whom the design belongs; the
external ornamentation, which tells the owner’s position or rank; and a motto, placed upon a
scroll. By heraldic tradition the design is described (blazoned) as if being done by the bearer
with the shield being worn on the arm. Thus, where it applies the terms “sinister” and “dexter”
are reversed as the design is viewed from the front.
For the bishop of a diocese, known as an Ordinary, his personal arms are joined (impaled)
with the arms of his jurisdiction; in this case the Diocese of Spokane.
9
The arms of the diocese are composed of a silver (white) field upon which is seen a red cross,
of The Faith, throughout. At the center of the cross is a silver (white) lily to honor the Blessed
Virgin Mary in her title of Our Lady of Lourdes, titular of the diocesan Cathedral-church. To
the upper left (chief dexter) is a red sunburst that signifies that the local Native American
people are known as the “children of the sun.”
In the sinister impalement of the design (right side) are the personal arms of Bishop Daly that
were adopted at the time of his selection to receive the fullness of Christ’s Holy Priesthood,
as a bishop, when he became Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose in California.
These are composed of a silver (white) field on which is seen the specialized monogram of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, in blue, as it appears on the reverse side of The Miraculous Medal. By
the use of this symbol, His Excellency, Bishop Daly acknowledges his deep devotion to the
Blessed Virgin Mary, and to Saint Vincent de Paul, the Bishop’s personal patron saint. The
Monogram of Mary is placed above the silhouette of Mount Tamalpais, which is the iconic
image of Marin County in California where Bishop Daly served his entire priestly ministry
until his call to San Jose.
The upper one-third of the Bishop’s personal arms is called “a chief.” This chief is red and
embattled and has displayed upon it a gold (yellow) diadem. These charges are employed to
honor the heritage of the Bishop’s parents, Donald and Marian (Early) Daly who have these
devices as parts of their families’ coats of arms.
For his motto, His Excellency, Bishop Daly has retained the phrase: “INTO YOUR HANDS
LORD.” This phrase, a paraphrase of Christ’s last words as He hung upon the cross, expresses
Bishop Daly’s deep conviction that it is in surrendering to the Will of God that man is able to
accomplish what may be God’s design for him.
The achievement is completed with the following external ornaments: a gold (yellow)
processional cross that extends above and below the shield and a pontifical hat, called a galero,
with its six tassels in three rows on either side of the shield, all in green. These are the heraldic
insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See (March, 1969).
Design executed by: Deacon Paul J. Sullivan, P. Sullivan & Co.

READING
Romans 8:26-30
The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we
ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who
searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the
holy ones according to God’s will. We know that all things work for good for those
who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he
also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the
firstborn among many. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called
he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

READING OF THE APOSTOLIC MANDATE
Archbishop Sartain invites Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the Apostolic Nuncio to
the United States of America, to read the Apostolic Mandate. The Apostolic Mandate
is then shown to the College of Consultors and the People of God.
ACCEPTANCE OF THE APOSTOLIC MANDATE
Archbishop Viganò:
Bishop Daly, you have heard the letter of His Holiness, Pope Francis. You are called
by the Holy Spirit to serve almighty God and the people of the Diocese of Spokane in
faith and love as their Shepherd. Having already accepted the appointment of the
Holy Father, are you willing to serve the people of this Diocese in the tradition of the
Apostolic Faith of the Church?
 25 
Bishop Daly:
With faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ, and with love of God in my heart, I do accept the
pastoral care of the People of God in the Diocese of Spokane. I resolve to serve
faithfully the spiritual needs of this local Church.
The Assembly responds: Thanks be to God!
PROCESSION TO THE CATHEDRA
Archbishop Sartain and Archbishop Viganò lead the new Bishop of Spokane to the
cathedra, where he is seated and presented with the crozier. This crozier was a gift
to the first Bishop of Spokane, Augustine Schinner, from the children of the Diocese
over 100 years ago. The cathedra is original to the Cathedral and was also used by
Bishop Schinner, whose motto Pro Deo (For God) is carved into the wood.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST READING
Acts of the Apostles 20:28-38
At Miletus, Paul spoke to the presbyters of the Church of Ephesus: “Keep watch over
yourselves and over the whole flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers,
in which you tend the Church of God that he acquired with his own Blood. I know that
after my departure savage wolves will come among you, and they will not spare the flock.
And from your own group, men will come forward perverting the truth to draw the
disciples away after them. So be vigilant and remember that for three years, night and day,
I unceasingly admonished each of you with tears. And now I commend you to God and
to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all
who are consecrated. I have never wanted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. You know
well that these very hands have served my needs and my companions. In every way I have
shown you that by hard work of that sort we must help the weak, and keep in mind the
words of the Lord Jesus who himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
When he had finished speaking he knelt down and prayed with them all. They were all
weeping loudly as they threw their arms around Paul and kissed him, for they were deeply
distressed that he had said that they would never see his face again. Then they escorted
him to the ship.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING
Ephesians 2:4-10
God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were
dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the
ages to come God might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in the kindness to us
in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you;
it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork,
created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we
should live in them.
Palabra de Dios. Te alabamos, Señor.
ALLELUIA
Chant, Mode VI
GOSPEL
John 17:11b-19
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: “Holy Father, keep them in your name
that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. When I was with them
I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them
was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But
now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy
completely. I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong
to the world any more than I belong to the world. I do not ask that you take them out of
the world but that you keep them from the Evil One. They do not belong to the world
any more than I belong to the world. Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As
you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for
them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
For our Holy Father Pope Francis, Bishop Daly, and all those united in apostolic
ministry, that they may be enlivened with the spirit of courage, right judgment,
knowledge, charity, and a zeal for the souls entrusted to their care.
Through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, Patroness of the Diocese of Spokane,
may there be an increase in those who are willing to respond generously to God’s call to
the priesthood and religious life.
That the Gospel of Life shed its light on all so that the vulnerable are protected, the
rights of consciences are upheld, the dignity of the unborn and elderly is protected, and
holy matrimony and consecrated life are honored.
For those who live in confusion, ignorance, skepticism, or doubt; for persecuted
Christians, the poor, the lonely and the lost: that they may be filled with the love and
light of the risen Christ.
For all those gathered around this sacred altar and those united in prayer throughout our
Diocese, that the light of the Morning Star will permeate the horizon of our lives, as we
strive to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
