Celebrating our History of
Bringing Light to the Community
Temple B’nai Or
From Rabbi Rossoff….
POURING OLD WINE INTO NEW FLASKS
I am excited to announce that, with this publication, we are launching several new ways of communicating with you and the larger community. With
the help of the Board, clergy and program staff, Marketing chair Paul
Gottsegen, along with David Fields, managed a process which boiled down
our feelings of what TBO is and can be and produced a new Temple logo
and tag line.
I hope you will love our new logo as much as I do. It maintains a sevenbranched menorah, the symbol of light for the people of light (B’nai Or)
that has represented Temple since our beginning. This menorah not only
showers us with light and warmth, it reaches out and connects with us
where we are. The small candles link one to the other and all together,
each person a “spark of the Divine,” holding hands across the generations.
This image communicates that TBO is about people, about community,
about spirituality. The embrace of the menorah, combined with these particular colors, convey the warmth and caring of the community we have
been, are, and ever strive to be.
Along with the new logo, we are introducing a new tag-line: “Connecting
Tradition to Life.” As Paul describes it, The new tag line is a natural evolution of "Warm Reform" - a reflection of our core mission and noble purpose to be an extended Jewish family for all of our members. At Temple,
we integrate tradition - the tradition of our people, the tradition of Reform
Judaism, the rich tradition of Temple B’nai Or – seamlessly into our everyday lives. For us, tradition is not about lachrymose history or onerous obligation; tradition is about connecting our lives as they are and would be
with our rich spiritual, cultural, musical and moral heritage. Connecting is
about friendships made, minds expanded through Torah and life-long
Jewish identities formed. We connect the resources of our community and
our tradition to life, your life, in joy and sorrow, in times of celebration
and moments of solace.
Both the logo and the tag line are open to countless interpretations. We
would love to hear what they mean to you!

From the Cantor…..
POURING YOUNG WINE INTO OLD FLASKS
In the Hebrew month of Elul, the last month of the year before Rosh Hashanah, we prepare and
meditate on the past year in order to welcome the new one. We take account of our souls before
God– cheshbon nefesh. We take responsibility to correct our wrong doings and nurture our most
meaningful relationships. In these moments I think of my yearly visit to Eretz Hakodesh – the
holy land. Why is this pilgrimage so holy to me personally? Why do I insist on visiting every year?
There are obvious reasons like seeing my family and friends, but a deeper need to connect draws
me back to this magical place.
Experiencing familiar sights, scents and tastes anew through the eyes my three children renews my soul in a special way every
year. This summer, my girls internalized the Hebrew word Yam, the sea, which we visited often. We felt the sand within our
fingers, jumped in the exploding waves and watched the sun set in the West. In Jerusalem, we made sure to put our little prayer
notes in the Western wall, we studied history in underground old city Jaffa, we experimented in the Haifa Science Museum up
North and saw gazelles skipping as we hiked in the Negev desert. These encounters create a deep impression in their minds and
souls.
For me, being in Israel is connecting my tradition, the tradition of my ancestors to the life and future of my children.
Shanah Tovah um’tukah.
Cantor Galit
From the President…WHAT’S NU?
The coming of fall reminds us of how each year the world renews itself and how quickly it all flies by us
if we don’t pause to appreciate it. One moment we are packing up for camp, beach or vacations, and
the next moment we are admiring the cornucopia of colors which is nature’s treat before the onset of
winter. This year, we also have lots of “nu” at Temple to celebrate. Our new Board, our clergy and staff
have been very busy over the summer. I hope that you will be as excited as we are at the work that has
been accomplished and the plans for the future. Here are just a few highlights:
 Our operating budget is now balanced by including our mortgage obligations…a first!
 We have launched our new logo and tag line to rave reviews!
 Our web site has been refreshed and revitalized…check out the user friendly calendar, new photos
of fun times at TBO and the blog!
 Our committees are revitalized and staffing up…still room for you to join us…don’t be shy!!
Welcome to our many new member families…Shalom on the Range was just the first of many events that we will celebrate together as a community, connecting our traditions to life today!
Please take a pause to appreciate this now, because there is more to come! Stay tuned!
L’shalom,
Susan

LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Planting The Seeds for our Future
By Jennie Rubin, Director of Early Childhood Education
The Frances & Herbert Brody Pre-School unveiled its beautiful Outdoor Learning
Space for the 2013/14 school year. Great care was taken to create a multisensory,
explorative, and creative space that challenges our students and brings awareness
about ecology, sustainability, and health. This encompasses our ever-expanding
gardens, gathering (classroom) area, and art section. The children have digging
spaces, building spaces,
and climbing spaces
made from natural materials to encourage love
and caring for the outdoors. Planting and harvesting, learning, and growing, the children build a foundation of
great values and skills that will flourish throughout their lives.
And have you seen our classrooms lately??? The natural theme
continues in our colors and materials – the learning and playing
takes center stage against the neutral back drop. By engaging
children through exploration we find that they take
good care of the materials,
and love learning about
where they come from.
Whether sitting on a
stump instead of a plastic chair, building with baby tree block, or creating recycled
art, the children are invested in helping keep the world healthy - and they enjoy
every lesson!
BOOTY NEWS
By Jen Spiegel, Youth Group Advisor
BOOTY is already off to a great start this year. Five volunteers helped make Shalom on the Range
a successful event by running children's games and activities. Special thanks to Katie Beilin, Sam
Beilin, Andrew Fried, Rebecca Lalk, and Molly Knapp for their enthusiasm and hard work.
The BOOTY board is excited to announce that the youth group will be taking over the first night
of Hebrew High School. We will have a pasta bar for dinner followed by a temple-wide scavenger
hunt. Bring your appetite and your thirst for adventure to Hebrew High on September 16!
Additionally, I want to introduce myself to the congregation. I am excited to be the new advisor of
the Temple B'nai Or youth group (BOOTY). As a TBO member for over twenty-two years, this is my second home. I
loved being active in the youth group in high school, representing B'nai Or at NFTY events, as well as serving as a
madricha. Spending summers at Camp Harlam and the rest of the year at Temple, I feel lucky to have grown up with
such a strong Jewish identity. I am excited to work with the clergy and this year's Board to plan some amazing
educational and social events for B'nai Or teens. We have great activities already in the works and more to unfold as the
year progresses, so stay tuned!

Benches for Mitzvah
By Jeremy Herbert
To become an Eagle Scout I needed to complete a project. I saw Temple as a
great place to host my project and thought about what might be helpful for the
project -- what could be added to make Temple even greater? Rabbi Rossoff
and I shared ideas and we decided to build benches in the office courtyard enhance the community space for parents and kids, as well as to build an outdoor
classroom for the Religious School. I
consulted many people and formed
a cohesive plan for the project. Once
my plan was approved, I gathered
the resources and began the work.
We had an enormous amount of help on our main work day. We had members from
the troop, the local high school, and from the congregation. Our plan was solid and
half the work was done in the first day.
During phase two of the project we stained the
benches and the whiteboard. We pulled together
another large crew and completed the work within two days.
I want to personally thank all of those who came out to assist me in this project, and especially Temple for the support that they provided to help me achieve my Eagle Scout status.
Please enjoy the outdoor space this Fall and ongoing!
