Digital perspectives Quickmaster DI Pro 9
The Quickmaster DI Pro – printing with a future •
The digitization of all types of organizational and
production processes continues to grow and
evolve. Data networks including the Internet and
high-speed private networks already permit
almost unlimited global exchange of digital data.
Effective use of this potential is becoming a vital
factor in business and delivers a strong competitive advantage.
Heidelberg Direct Imaging –
a good choice for the market of the future.
The Internet, high-speed private networks and incipient
UMTS systems all have one thing in common – they are all
part of a global communications network. Regardless of
which system wins the day, the exchange of digital data
via networks and the processing of that data is becoming
standard practice, and it offers some unexpected possibilities.
Jobs can be initiated from the farthest corners of the
globe and services offered to people anywhere in the world.
Regardless of distance, information and data can be exchanged in minimal time, and print-on-demand and distributed printing have become a reality. Regardless of how
the market is changing and will continue to change,
Heidelberg will develop targeted solutions with a secure
future to meet those changes. With the Quickmaster DI
Pro, Heidelberg offers you all the workflow components
perfectly dovetailed into an integrated overall concept.
Open, secure standards like PostScript®, PDF and Delta™
Lists are used at the interface to digital prepress. And it
goes without saying that simple upgrade options are
available and that Heidelberg’s solutions can be quickly
integrated into common networks. Every Heidelberg
solution therefore becomes an optimum, future-focused
solution for the user – a fact that is demonstrated in the
performance and capabilities of the Quickmaster DI Pro.
10 Quickmaster DI Pro Potential
The Quickmaster DI Pro – opening new doors
and completely new opportunities • The outstanding features of the Quickmaster DI Pro are high
print quality coupled with the ability to handle
short print runs cost-effectively from the outset.
These strengths enable users to tap into new
customer potential and create distinct competitive advantages for their business.
A fully digital workflow – from the initial idea
right through to the printed product.
Potential Quickmaster DI Pro 11
Digitizing the entire process from the graphic idea to the
digital offset printing stage is perfectly feasible. And
customers are increasingly asking for it. That’s why it’s
becoming more and more important to link the print
stage to the digital processes in the prepress stage. Access
to digital offset printing is now closer than ever for prepress companies, digital service providers and even advertising agencies. This access to directly processing digital
data allows ever shorter print runs to be delivered in
standard offset quality with reduced outlay and guaranteed profitability. All types of companies can now considerably expand their range of services. The Quickmaster
DI Pro provides the resources to offer end-to-end solutions.
For direct marketing companies, for example, this
means not only handling design and layout for their
customers, but also printing the jobs, too – greatly increasing the efficiency and speed of the entire process.
Prepress service providers can apply their existing expertise from the digital prepress to the print production
stage. This not only enables them to more efficiently use
their existing resources, but also to enhance their competitiveness and expand their range of services. With the
Quickmaster DI Pro, they can also deliver new services to
increase their sales potential – and revenue.
That’s because directly processing digital with a completely digital workflow, printshops can meet their
customers’ rising demands or create a new profit center
for the short-color run and high-speed printing market to
complement their existing business.
Smaller high-speed printshops that have worked
exclusively with single- and two-color presses in the past
can use the Quickmaster DI Pro as a profitable gateway to
four-color offset printing.
The Quickmaster DI Pro is extremely versatile and
offers a wealth of opportunities. Whatever you print on
the Quickmaster DI Pro, you can be sure of high quality
and profit from the word go.
The strength of the Quickmaster DI Pro –
superb quality 4-color print products.
12 Quickmaster DI Pro DI-workflow
The workflow – speed and precision • Constantly
changing graphic formats and more demanding
customer requirements are a real challenge to a
workflow system. The workflow on the Quickmaster
DI Pro is already set up to meet the demands
associated with digital service provision.
A modern workflow must demonstrate openness, ease of
operation, standardization, reliability, speed, flexibility
and quality. A digital print service provider must be able
to respond quickly and reliably to all the demands of the
market. Need a press to handle a wide range of digital
formats? The Quickmaster DI Pro is your answer – accepting common standard formats like PDF and PostScript.
The raster image processor (RIP) plays a central role within
the workflow. It generates the bitmaps which are transferred to the printing plates by the lasers in the Quickmaster
DI Pro. The quality of the rasterization depends on the
algorithms, which determine resolution, angling and dot
shape. Delta Technology 7.0 enables Heidelberg to create a
200 lpi screen with 1,270 dpi.
Standards
Gearing the workflow to standards produces futureoriented, compatible solutions. Various hardware and
software components can be combined and linked with
no trouble at all.
Operability
Intuitive working and clear organization are essential if a
workflow system is to be simple to use. The logical structure makes it easy to control and configure every process.
Reliability
Quality control is handled automatically by various preflight and test functions. The resulting reliability forms
an important basis for ensuring the printing process runs
smoothly.
Flexibility
Flexibility is demonstrated by the availability of combining
various components to create a workflow. Heidelberg
workflow components are optimally tuned to one another,
and can also incorporate workflow products from other
manufacturers simply and easily.

14 Quickmaster DI Pro Operating concept
The CP2000 Center – extremely simple to use •
The Quickmaster DI Pro operates using the
CP2000 Center, which sets outstanding performance standards. The entire printing process
can be controlled directly from a control station
with touchscreen, a method which is simple,
fast and reliable. You get one-touch productivity
without any limitations.
The CP2000 Center – the state-of-the-art,
ergonomic printer’s workstation.
Operating concept Quickmaster DI Pro 15
It goes without saying that you can work simply and
rapidly on the Quickmaster DI Pro. This is possible due to
press control from the CP2000 Center™. The CP2000 Center
is a working area that has been ergonomically designed
and optimized for the printer. All settings and current
processes are displayed on a single, clearly structured
touchscreen. This user interface employs graphics,
symbols and plain text information to make operation
simple and fast through process visualization.
Ink zone display
The Quickmaster DI Pro ink zones are preset by converting
the ink file produced in the RIP. This provides the precise
color presets for the individual inking units.
The clearly structured ink zone display provides a
useful overview of each ink zone. Together, the ink zones
are aggregated into an easily recordable ink key profile.
The ink zones can be quickly set manually, either via
the user-friendly membrane keys or the touchscreen. The
setting steps for the individual ink zones and the volume
of ink controlled via the forwards motion of the ink
fountain roller are given as percentages.
Job management
The job management function enables fully automatic
job preparation of print runs. This process allows an
entire new job to be prepared on the CP2000 Center while
the current job is being processed. Choice of inking unit,
paper settings on the feeder, number of sheets to be
printed and all the other operations that make up the
whole process of job preparation, print run and job
archiving are controlled by the job management function. Standard or repeat jobs can also be saved with all
their relevant machine configurations and can be called
up again when required. This shortens makeready times
and reduces paper waste.
CP2000 Center press control
• Fast, simple and reliable operation of the
Quickmaster DI Pro
• Reduces makeready times
• High process reliability and productivity
• Simple, reliable integration into the existing
infrastructure
Viewer/soft proof
The viewer, known as the soft proof, enables bitmaps to be
viewed in detail on screen before actual plate imaging
takes place. This step ensures that errors such as missing
logos or wrong fonts can be checked. This is possible as a
composite file or as a single color separation. Early
detection of errors helps save time – and money.
Characteristic color profile editor
Different printing stock needs different color profiles. The
color profile editor checks and adjusts each individual
color profile. This ensures that the best color profiles are
generated for the printing stock used, ink type, temperature and other parameters. This makes it easy to maintain
a high level of quality with constantly changing printing
stock.
Soft proof via viewer.
16 Quickmaster DI Pro Compact design
The printing press at its best – feeder included •
The Quickmaster DI Pro features top-class
German engineering and is typical of a product
from Heidelberg. Its compact, solid design minimizes its footprint and means that the press
will hold its value. The highly functional, flexible
feeder ensures fast, simple format and stock
changes.
The stream feeder allows a broad spectrum
of printing stock to be processed with ease.
Compact design Quickmaster DI Pro 17
Precision and care during production are a necessary
prerequisite for high-quality machines and print results.
You can tell at first glance that the Quickmaster DI Pro is
something special. Its compact construction and design
details are evidence of manufacturing technology that is
available only from Heidelberg. The quality of the design
and finishing of the Quickmaster DI Pro ensure that the
press will hold its value and produce outstanding printing results. The press boasts numerous innovative design
features. Its solid construction together with the helically
toothed drive train and the bearer-to-bearer pressure
between plate and blanket cylinders ensure precise screen
dots, long service life and high productivity.
Register accuracy of 0.02 mm (0.00079”) allows true-toregister impression, even with a fifth and sixth color. The
ability to handle an extended range of printing stocks
from 0.04 to 0.30 mm (0.0016” to 0.012”) in thickness
means that a wide range of different stock, including
coated and non-coated papers, Chromolux, India papers,
envelopes and films, can be printed.
The satellite design with one quadruple-diameter impression cylinder allows four-color printing with a single
gripper closure. Each sheet is gripped only once and is
then printed without being transferred to any other
gripper systems. This cuts down further on the already
low stresses and strains on the sheet. The 720 mm (2’4 2/8”)
impression cylinder also yields further benefits when
printing on board. Its low surface curvature means that
sheets are not bent significantly as they travel around the
cylinder, eliminating the need for any special guide
elements.
The feeder is fitted with a suction head with combined
lifting and forwarding suckers. These separate the sheets
reliably, even at top speed. Smooth sheet travel is ensured,
even with very thin or thick printing stock. Single-sheet
mode allows you to print envelopes with difficult flaps
without any additional equipment. When changing
printing stock, many time-intensive settings are performed
automatically by means of the press control system. You
can therefore be assured of fast, simple format and stock
changes.
Both feeder and delivery are disconnected during the
imaging process. This reduces noise and mechanical strain,
thereby cutting maintenance work and extending the
service life of the delivery chain. The specific design of the
delivery permits the subsequent installation of an infrared
dryer system (optional). The advantage of an infrared
dryer is that the printed sheets can proceed to finishing
much more quickly.
The many innovative technical details and all its
different potential uses make the Quickmaster DI Pro
an extremely high-performing press which you can rely
on day after day.
18 Quickmaster DI Pro Quality printing units
Quality printing units and automatic plate changing • The Quickmaster DI Pro offers you more.
Greater performance, greater functionality, more
potential uses. It’s all about what goes into building the Quickmaster DI Pro – and of course what
you get out of it.
The Quickmaster DI Pro’s waterless offset printing system
delivers top print quality. And it’s a simple process, too.
All functions can be controlled centrally from the ergonomic CP2000 Center. Plate imaging takes place at the touch
of a button. The Quickmaster DI Pro is unbeatable when it
comes to versatility, too. After all, it combines the quality
of offset printing with the speed of a digital workflow.
Automatic plate changing
The printing units on the Quickmaster DI Pro are equipped
with unique plate cylinders, each of which has an integrated master cassette. Each supply reel contains enough
material for 35 successive print jobs. In the imaging process, all four masters are simultaneously imaged in the
press in precise register. This is a fully automatic procedure not requiring any intervention by the operator. Each
of the four imaging units uses 16 laser diodes to image the
printing plates simultaneously. After imaging, the plates
are made print-ready by an automated cleaning system.
Color presetting is also automatic. The job-specific ink
profile for all four colors is calculated on the basis of the
RIPped data. This ink profile is then relayed to the CP ink
fountains. Each ink fountain has 12 ink zones which permit precise ink metering over a wide range. Due to the high
degree of automation on the Quickmaster DI Pro, a complete job change can be made in less than 10 minutes.
The masters are on a reel inside the plate cylinder,
for maximum functionality in minimum space.
Versatility Quickmaster DI Pro 19
Versatility and flexibility
The versatility and flexibility of the Quickmaster DI Pro
starts with the inks you can use. The press will handle all
commercially available waterless offset inks. The focus is
on process inks for four-color printing, but special inks
available for waterless offset printing are also available.
These special inks may be used for special logos or
customers’ corporate colors.
The Quickmaster DI Pro also offers maximum flexibility when it comes to selecting printing stock. It can handle
anything from 0.04 mm (0.0016”) label paper to Chromolux
board 0.30 mm (0.012”) thick. Even prefinished materials
such as envelopes are no problem.
Another example of the flexibility of the Quickmaster
DI Pro is the formats it can handle. The Quickmaster DI
Pro supports a large variety of formats, ranging from postcards to A3+ size posters and also handling business cards,

films and brochures. The largest printable sheet size is
460 x 340 mm (18 1/8” x 13 3/8”) and the smallest 140 x 89
mm (5 1/2” x 3 1/2”). Almost any format in-between can be
processed. The feeder and delivery are quickly and easily
adjusted to different formats. Job changes are extremely
time-saving – an advantage that really makes itself felt on
short runs. And although the Quickmaster DI Pro is best
suited to short runs of between 200 and 5,000 copies, is
also handles longer runs quickly and with ease. The versatility of the Quickmaster DI Pro is just what the market is
calling for today – a well-rounder that can accommodate
almost any requirement.
20 Quickmaster DI Pro Cost-effectiveness
Outstanding productivity. Outstanding profitability • Direct printing of digital data, minimal
makeready times and high-production speeds
are distinct advantages of the Quickmaster DI
Pro, benefiting both you and your customers.
The Quickmaster DI Pro opens up a whole new dimension
in productivity – and profitability, too. It delivers productivity and profitability due to the design of the press itself,
combined with its ability to handle jobs that previously
would have been considered unprofitable. The Quickmaster
DI Pro’s features translate into distinct advantages for you:
The Quickmaster DI Pro allows digital data to be loaded
directly into the press, eliminating costly and time-consuming intermediate steps. Automatic ink presetting and
the absence of dampening solution cuts start-up waste –
and keeps corresponding costs – to a minimum. The costintensive process of producing plates externally is a thing
of the past. The new feeder means that even the most
demanding print products can now be handled faster and
more easily than ever before.
In production mode, the Quickmaster DI Pro achieves
a speed of up to 10,000 sheets per hour, enabling completion of small runs up to 500 sheets in less than 20 minutes, including makeready time. This feature makes it
possible to create a cost structure which allows profitable
production from a run size of just 200 sheets.
The speed, cost-effectiveness and quality of the
Quickmaster DI Pro and its flexibility in terms of printing
stock ensure high profitability from the word go. A study
conducted by CAP Venture, an independent US research
institute, has already shown this to be the case. The study
found that DI users have an enormous gross profit margin
averaging 42, compared to an industry average of 29 percent. Which proves that as your production capacity rises
with the Quickmaster DI Pro, so will your profits.
