Shoppers attending the March 2 and 3 antique show at the
Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso,
Indiana, enjoyed a sell-out crowd of 68
dealers – and supported the Porter County
Mental Health Association at the same time.
Profits from the yearly show support work
done throughout the year by the organization.
“We’re thrilled with the sold-out dealer
count,” said association director Mary
Hodson. And when the doors closed after
the two day show, many dealers agreed saying
shoppers filled the Expo Center, keeping them
busy on both days.

It was way back in 1970 when a small group of decoy collectors got
together and held the very first Wisconsin Decoy and Sporting
Collectibles Show. And more than two generations later, the event is
still going strong - the oldest event of its kind in the state. The show
itself is a one-day affair, but there are three days of spirited room-toroom trading preceding it, all open to the public. It’s the love of the
hobby that brings both the exhibitors and shoppers here to Oshkosh,
Wisconsin, where you can find decoys both old and new, lots of other
sporting-related collectibles, and an enthusiasm that’s just plain contagious!

Out & About
What an adventurous morning! We awoke to sheer
white ice covered trees and a two hour school delay.
My kid’s were excited, but all I saw were icy roads. In
nine years of school, we have never had a delay, we
barely get school cancelations. Oh wait, the girls get
on the bus, and it radioed to pull over. The school
district is deciding if they are just going to close
school. They announce school is now closed, buses Take The

our next neighborhood, so the driver released the
kids so they can go home. My husband made it to work to
find the power off, only to be sent home three hours later
still without power. One good thing, I guess the yard work
will have to wait a little longer, my family will enjoy that.

Shoppers Flock to Porter County Expo Center for
Treasures of the Past
Article & Photos by Jack Kelly
The event was a bittersweet one for Ann Clauson, a dealer from Dyer, IN.
The 33 year show veteran said she is closing her business this year, citing health
problems but adding, “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, but the business and inventory is now for sale.”
Clauson showed off several thousand pieces of jewelry at the Expo Center,
including a Victorian cameo filigree bracelet priced at $150 and a Victorian amethyst
necklace with baby sea pearls for $300.
If you wanted vintage furs to accent that jewelry you could have visited the
booth of Debra Vujko, who had several ostrich, mink and other vintage furs priced
from $15 to $125. At the same spot, a 48 star United States flag with original box
and wood pole could fly at your home for $50.
Clock collectors checked out a late 1800s Dresden porcelain 8-day half hour
strike Ansonia mantel clock, with key, priced at $395 by Phyllis Brandy of
Valparaiso. Toy and 1933 Chicago World’s Fair collectors admired her 17 inch tall
bagatelle marble game with ‘33 fair advertising on the face that could be played anywhere for $135.
“It’s in wonderful condition with the original carry case, with all accessories
and a real buy at $250,” said dearler Joan Marinello, pointing to a 1934 Singer
Featherweight sewing machine. Other shoppers stopped to inspect two 10 inch tall
original brush Flow Blue fireplace mantel jars offered for $200 for the pair. Joan and
husband Jerry maintain a booth the Crown Point, IN, Antique Mall.
Looking for a cast iron 1910 era Lane No. 15 coffee mill with 17 inch
wheels? You would have found it, offered for $600, by Don and Marilyn Mohr of
Valparaiso. The couple also showed off a 26 inch diameter primitive 1920s copper
kettle with hand-hammered stand and wood paddle, priced at $700.
Mari Mitri of Gold Promotions LLC, was at the Expo Center show for two
purposes, to sell fine gold, silver and jewelry items – and to promote the upcoming
LaPorte Antique Show, which she manages, starting in April and running through the
summer. Many people stopped to admire her unique women’s miniature porcelain
high heel shoe display showing diamond and multicolor stone rings priced from
$199 to $1,599. Of special interest was an Edwardian 14-diamond heart-shaped gold
pendant priced at $10,000.
Finely refinished oak furniture filled the booth of Marvin and Connie Novak
of Michigan City, IN. Shoppers stopped to admire their Yaman & Erbe 71 inch tall
sectional file cabinet priced at $895. Others checked out the workmanship on a 39
inch tall multi-drawer cabinet tagged at $425 and a 54 inch tall double-drawer cabinet offered for $525.
“We had good steady foot traffic both days,” said dealer Tom Svast, Griffith,
IN. Cubs baseball fans checked out a large series of vintage sports items priced from
$15 to $50. Of local interest was a pair of movie theater chairs from nearby Crown
Point, IN. The cast iron sides featured the raised letters C.P. Svast pointed out that
the trademark of the famous furniture maker Heywood Wakefield also was imprinted on them. You could relax with the tufted pair at your home for $138.
“This is Barbie doll heaven,” gushed one shopper as she looked into the
booth of Launie Wolford of Michigan City, IN. More than 200 of the popular dolls
covered the walls and tables, many with original boxes, priced from $20 to $250.
The most expensive was a 1961 bubble cut “Singe” for $250.
Dog collector traffic stopped for a closer look at items in the booth of Harvey
and Carol Evans of Merrillville, IN. The couple offered three different 1940s dog’s
head “genuine briar” hand-carved pipes priced at $60 each. At the same spot, an
entire shelf of porcelain china dogs of all sizes could grace your home for $5 to $28
each.
Mental Health Association Director Hodson pronounced the show “a total
success,” calling attention to the volunteers that worked hard to bring about the
event.

Oshkosh Hilton Hosts 44th Annual Wisconsin Decoy
& Sporting Collectibles Show
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
For many years, the event has been held at the beautiful Hilton Garden Inn of
Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It’s an easy three-hour drive from Chicago - less than half that
from Milwaukee. Although the show is an independent one, and not affiliated with
any club, it is still very much a collector’s show. Dozens of decoy and sporting enthusiasts buy, swap, and sell from their hotel rooms during the week, then head down to
the show itself, held in the Hotel’s ballroom on Saturday.
You may not have even thought about it, but decoys truly are one of North America’s

The coming of the railroads changed everything. The rapidly-growing urban populations needed food, and the trains were an easy way for the new “market hunters” to
quickly get their waterfowl harvest to the big cities. That wholesale hunting of ducks
meant a need for huge quantities of decoys too. As you might imagine, it’s the period
where most of the commercial decoy factories had their heyday as well.
That’s when the iconic makers such as Peterson, Mason, and Dodge got their starts.

Most all of the exhibitors are avid sportsman, coming into the hobby of decoy collecting from the love of sporting and the outdoors. Some are from the immediate area,
which because of massive Lake Winnebago and other area lakes, has a rich history of
waterfowl hunting. Others come from several surrounding states, with many hailing Illinois carver Gerald Cranwill is

It’s one of the busiest specialty shows you’ll find anywhere. Antique & vintage decoy
exhibitors make up much of the show, but you’ll find most anything sporting related,
including advertising, fishing lures, vintage shell boxes, and more. Many of the region’s
premier wildlife carvers come every year too, with examples of their latest masterpieces
for sale, from traditional duck decoys to decorative carvings of everything from tiny
songbirds to life-size birds of prey. You can’t help but have a good time at the show. I
look forward to the event each year, and I don’t even collect decoys.

Gone Wild for Manatee Gift Adoptions!
Adopting real Florida manatees for family and friends this Holiday season is natureinspired, thoughtful gift-giving that helps Save the Manatee Club increase conservation and education efforts for the endangered marine mammals and their aquatic
habitat. It also helps holiday shoppers stretch those often limited budgets.
Last year, Lisa Cartossa from Holt, Missouri, decided that since her two young
nieces, Lily and Rose from North Carolina, were fortunate enough to have most
everything they needed, she would adopt manatees as Christmas presents for them.
Lisa chose adoptees “Paddy Doyle” and “Flash,” who regularly winter at Blue
Spring State Park, from Save the Manatee Club’s Adopt-A-Manatee program. All of
the manatees available for adoption can be viewed on the Club’s website at
http://www.savethemanatee.org/adoptees.htm. Two new manatees recently added to
the list of adoptees are from Alabama, “Zewie” and “Bama.”
An annual manatee adoption costs $25, which is just a little over $2 a month, and
includes a color photo of a real manatee, an adoption certificate, biography, membership handbook, and subscriptions to the Club's newsletters which feature updated
reports on the manatees in the adoption program. Shipping is free within the United
States. Gift adoptions are sent with a personalized holiday message. Or for a $35
tax-deductible donation, each new member will also receive Save the Manatee
Club's 2012 wall calendar, featuring spectacular manatee photos to enjoy all year and
well past.
“When my nieces received their adoption packets for Christmas, I was told you could
not have heard two children screaming with excitement louder than they were,” said
Lisa. “Immediately, the manatees’ pictures went on their walls. They knew about
manatees, but Save the Manatee Club’s adoption program created this passion and
enthusiasm in them that’s very wonderful for me as an adult to be part of. I can’t tell
you how thrilled my nieces are to get the newsletter addressed personally to them.
They read every word front to back. Who knows, the Club may have just created the
next generation of marine life specialists dedicated to the conservation of these wonderful creatures.”
Save the Manatee Club, a national nonprofit organization, was co-founded thirty
years ago by singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. Funds from the Holiday gift adoptions help with manatee rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts; research; education and public awareness projects; conservation work to protect manatees and their
habitat; and for programs in the United States, Central and South America, the Wider
Caribbean, and West Africa. Manatees are listed as endangered at the state, federal,
and international levels.
Patrick Rose, aquatic biologist and Executive Director of the Club, points out that
manatees face tremendous challenges to their survival from human activities. “In
Florida alone, since record-keeping began in 1974, more than 38% of manatee deaths
where cause of death is known were human-related. So it is imperative that we continue to educate the public about the presence of manatees in our waters. Adopting
a manatee is a great way to learn more about this beloved species and how to help
make a difference in their lives.”
Find out more information about manatees and Holiday gift adoptions by contacting
Save the Manatee Club at 500 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751, or calling 1800-432-JOIN (5646), or visiting their web site at www.savethemanatee.org, where
you can also sign up for the Club’s free E-Newsletter. Also, discover a variety of
manatee items in the Club’s gift catalog at http://www.savethemanatee.org/shop/.

Contemporary Decoy and Call Makers from around the world to
Showcase Their Unique Talents At The National Antique Decoy and
Sporting Collectors Show at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL
Every spring, just like the wildfowl that migrate
toward their Northern nesting areas, a passionate and
extremely talented group of master duck decoy and call
makers from across the globe descend on Pheasant Run
Resort in St. Charles, IL to unveil their latest creations.
Many of these artists will demonstrate how they create
these masterpieces live throughout the show for all to
see. Their talent is unique and rare, and comes from family traditions, lots of study of the old masters, and an
intense love of outdoors. It is easy to feel their ideas and
passion as pieces of wood are transformed into wonderful folk art that speaks to the heritage of the region and
carver -- a heritage that is uniquely American and has
become a part of the story of our country. This contemporary work is part of a nearly week long show that
includes over 20,000 antique sporting collectible items
available for viewing, appraisal, buying, selling and
trading -- representing the full range of our unique history. This annual gathering features a number of events
that are of interest to the public.

The Midwest Decoy Collectors Association is a
non-profit organization whose purpose is to collect and
preserve the history of the decoy as original American
folk art. This convention and show is the premier
opportunity for the novice, antique dealer or the experienced collector to network and learn more about the
decoy as functional folk art or to add to their collections.
For more information, please visit midwestdecoy.org
Cameron McIntyre is a carver from
Maryland who has very interesting style.
This roothead brandt is a real eyecatcher.
Cameron working on the Brandt
that he created during the show.
Marty Hanson at work on his
bench during the show.
Pat Meneely sharing painting
techniques in the carver’s corner.
The show presents a wonderful opportunity
to talk with our carver memebers.
