Have you ever considered having a go at indoor bowls? Do you know that there are two venues within our community; Llanteg Village Hall and Amroth Parish Hall at Summerhill. Indoor bowls is a sport that can be played at many levels; social, local league, county and national. The choice is yours. Many Welsh internationals are young people dispelling the myth that indoor bowls is a sport for 'oldies' Summerhill is a social gathering and has been up and running just over two years and was started with a taster evening. Several of the people who tried the evening have been coming ever since. Some members of the Llanteg club initially demonstrated and encouraged the new Summerhill recruits and have continued to come on a regular basis. We have been joined by players from outside the Amroth parish and holiday makers from time to time and other bowlers and non-bowlers come along for an enjoyable evening on a Tuesday from 7.00pm. Where else can you have an evening of sport, keeping fit, tea and biscuits and a good laugh. You don't need any equipment as you can play in your socks and there are bowls at Summerhill. Llanteg indoor bowls club play in the South Pembrokeshire Friendly League. Between September and March they play a match most weeks and last year finished 2nd in the League. The Badgers Bowling Club also meet at Llanteg and play in the Pembrokeshire League. Their members can be eligible to play for the county and Wales. You might get hooked! PLEASE COME ALONG AND SHARE YOUR VIEWS/IDEAS We started again after the Christmas break on Jan. 16th with several new children joining us. We have had some lively sessions and our new helper Sylvia has brought in some excellent craft ideas, which she and Jill have developed with the children. They have created hearts for Valentine’s Day from twigs and branches collected from the woods and decorated them with ribbons and flowers; made flags, posters and daffodil badges for St. Davids Day; made crepe paper flowers and attached them to twigs; Mother’s Day cards, posters and bead bracelets were created and thanks to Sally and Cathy pancakes were made, tossed and eaten with relish for Shrove Tuesday. Charlie managed to get onto the field for games at the beginning of March, which the children loved having been restricted to the hall with the dark evenings. We have a trip to Blue Lagoon planned and several craft activities for Easter before we close on 26th March. We will re-open on Monday 16th April at 6p.m. - 7.30p.m. with the lighter nights, rugby, rounders and other games on the field, as well as more indoor activities. Come and join us, it’s great fun and we always welcome new helpers and ideas. PEMBROKESHIRE SOUTH EAST ENERGY In January, Steve Hack from Seren Energy, the group’s partner in the proposed Wind Turbine Project, talked to the meeting about the work and surveys that have been done so far and the fact that a planning application should be submitted within 6- 12 months. In February, Robert Thornhill, the Development Manager of the Atlantic Array Offshore Wind Farm in the Bristol Channel gave us an update on the project. It will be sited about 13kms off Lundy, 16kms off the Gower and 14kms off the North Devon Coast, so it is unlikely we will be able to distinguish much on the horizon even on a very clear day. One round of public consultation has taken place and the feedback has been inputted into the plans and influenced the project. A second round of public consultation will follow and be notified in the press. The group meets the 3rd Thursday every month at the Regency Hall, Saundersfoot at 7p.m. and everyone is welcome. There is no meeting in April, the next meeting being the 17th May, but a visit to a Solar Farm in Cilgerran is planned for the 25th April, if you are interested please contact Janet Roberts at [email protected] 12 Local history and heritage group The group was saddened to lose one of its members, Mr Bob Cole who died in January. In March we have Mr Rob Scourfield coming to speak to us on Below the Landsker. In April Mr Mike Bennett will be speaking to us on mills which will fit in with the project that the group has on-going at the moment. Outings planned for the year so far are Civil War Pembroke and Chapel Bay Fort at West Angle. Our History Group would like to collect your memories of living in or visiting Amroth, for an exciting ‘living history’ project. Have your memories captured forever, for others to share and enjoy over the years. Please phone your memories to Sue on 811972 or email her at [email protected] . IT CAN’T HAPPEN WITHOUT YOU. The Amroth and District Coast Care Group has continued its monthly clean-ups throughout the winter, collecting approximately 12 bags of rubbish each time. This month some members will be attending Rocky Shore Survey training to help them support a national study of the effects of global warming on British marine life. They will then be looking for help with their research from other local volunteers. The next clean-up is scheduled for Sunday March 25th. Meet at 2 pm at the top of the footpath to Telpyn Beach. Volunteers are also invited to attend a Keep Wales Tidy clean-up at Newgale beach on Thursday March 29th. Meet at the main car park at 10 am. The Wales Coastal Path is due to be officially opened on Saturday May 5th and along with other coast care groups we have been asked to clean our bit of path as well as our beaches the weekend before that. Meet at the start of the Pembrokeshire section of the path by the New Inn on Sunday April 29th at 2pm. For any further information please contact David or Jackie on 01834810245 5 COLBY’S DEVELOPMENTS FOR 2012 Looking forward to 2012 at National Trust Colby Woodland Garden Better Woodland for the Colby Estate. The “Better Woodland for Wales” work has been forging ahead in the Colby woodlands through the winter. Removal of the remaining non native conifers has been undertaken in Craig y Borion woods. New forestry tracks into the woods have been created to allow access for the modern machinery that makes the work affordable. Re-planting of native Oak, with some Ash, Wild Cherry and native shrubs will be undertaken in the Autumn The newly planted Oak trees will provide a home for more creatures (especially insects), than any other tree can, and over 300 species of lichens and 65 different species of mosses and liverworts grow on oaks. The wide range of moth species that live on oaks provide food for the many bat species found in our woodlands. The Woodland Garden itself is also going to see big changes, as groves of larch trees will be felled to help prevent the spread of the plant disease Phytophthora ramorum. Though the disease has not yet infected Larch here in the Colby woodlands, Forestry Commission advisors and plant disease experts at the Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs, all agree that the jump to Larch is highly likely here too. The only way to prevent further spread is to remove most of the Larch trees now before infection occurs. The widespread re-planting already underway in the garden will now include a large number of trees to replace the Larch, which will be taken out throughout 2012. For the comfort of our early visitors, wood burning stoves were installed in both the Bothy Tearoom and Information room over the Winter, so those who do brave the weather, will be able to sit in front of a nice warm fire as they enjoy their coffee or look through the second hand book shelves. The forest school initiative has been given a boost by pupils from Greenhill School who have been giving us ideas on what they would like to see here at Colby. Most of these ideas will be put into practice during 2012 as we develop the area above the car park to provide natural play and exploration for school children and all our visitors. Den building, tunnels, climbing trees, a ground maze, rope swings and camp fires are just some of the ideas the pupils came up with. We’re looking forward now to making it all happen! 6 11 . AMROTH COMMUNITY COUNCIL It was agreed at the last meeting, that all proceeds raised over the weekend would be for Tinkers’ Hill Swan and Bird of Prey Rescue Centre in Amroth SAT. 2nd June – - Wiseman’s Bridge Inn – Sand-castle building competition The Pirate, Amroth – Treasure Hunt SUN. 3rd June - New Inn, Amroth – Children’s Activities – Band in evening SUN/MON 3rd/4th June – Wiseman’s Bridge – Treasure Hunt - SAT/SUN/MON – bar each night WILDLIFE WATCH Here we go again, spring is in the air, great tits and thrushes can be heard calling. The crow family i.e. rooks and jackdaws are already paired up. If two identical robins are tolerating each other then they are also an item. Toads mating in a garden pond Frogs were coming to garden ponds at the beginning of February with toads from the beginning of March, spawning with long trails of eggs, wrapped around pond weed. During the winter there have been rare sightings of 23 glossy ibis in and around Carew and regularly seen by the Milton Brewery Pub and Carew Cheriton. They are migrating from Spain, and one hopes they will stay and breed here. Amroth Castle – Kids’ Treasure Hunt – Entertainment in MON 4th – Beach Sports for children with Kids’ Barbecue on village main beach Pebble castle building competition Stalls along the promenade (WI, Local crafts, cakes) proceeds to Tinkers’ Hill - £10 for table. (Local craft people to be contacted.) Pig Roast – from 2.00 p.m. Fireworks – 10.15 p.m. (Community Council) Amroth Arms – Band in the evening A Royal Quiz for families will be available across our patch prior to the weekend. Entry will be £1.00. There will be three prizes for the best scorers drawn on the day. (Councillor John James) Radio Pembrokeshire to be informed of activities to give our weekend plenty of publicity. Nothing is finally confirmed, because of the length of time to the event and people’s ideas and views are very welcome. Sadly myxomatosis has been seen affecting the local rabbit population. Both tawny and barn owls have been heard around the Summerhill area at night. Barn owls are very much in de cline because of a lack of a suitable Elegant Ibis in flight habitat, as barns/buildings are being converted and renovated without any thought of suitable barn owl nesting alternatives. It will be a tragedy if barn owls are no longer in our area. Meets every 2nd Monday at 7.00 p.m. in the Hall. The WI is sad at the death of Gwyneth Palmer (nee Ellis) in Jan. (our founder member) May 23rd 10-12 Kingsmoor Group of W.I’s holding a coffee morning at Wiseman’s Bridge. June 4th (Diamond Jubilee) - Bottle Stall on Amroth seafront—proceeds to Tinkers Hill. Dorian Rees (our postman) is again helping to organise the Pembrokeshire Charity Bike Ride which takes place this year on Sunday 12th August. Dorian has been involved in the running of the bike ride for the past 4 years by organising the routes and updating the website. This year’s charities to benefit from the event are:Pembrokeshire Alzheimer’s Meningitis Trust (Hannah Gwilliam Trust) Leukaemia Research Trust (Clare Williams Trust) Last year, the Pembrokeshire Charity Bike Ride raised over £12,000 for 3 local charities and attracted over 350 cyclists to the event. Since it began in 2001 the Pembrokeshire Charity Bike Ride has raised over £118,000 with all charity money being spent within the County. If anybody wishes to support this year’s event by taking part in a great family day out, or donating money to the event, please see Dorian or for more information please see the website at www.pembsbikeride.co.uk “I have been doing charity cycle rides for over 20 years including competing in all 10 British Heart Foundation bike rides that took place in Pembrokeshire. I also completed a solo ride in 2004 that involved taking a ferry to Santander in Northern Spain and then cycling across the border in to France and cycling 800 miles up to Roscoff in Brittany to catch a ferry back to the UK raising over £1800 for Ward 10 at Withybush Hospital. It was a great way to experience a country and of course a good excuse to sample some of its fine wines along the way! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the area for always giving their generous support during my fundraising.” Dorian Rees 9 WISEMAN’S BRIDGE ROWING CLUB WISEMAN’S BRIDGE ROWING CLUB have had one of their most successful years in 2011 with 25 members. Our women’s team have competed particularly strongly, bringing home winning trophies from races at Cardigan and Ramsey. A mixed team won the Haverfordwest/Dale marathon 22 mile race. The form carried through to the end of season’s Great River Race, 22 miles along the Thames, with excellent times posted by both mens and womens crews in difficult conditions. With their easy-to-spot luminous headbands you could be sure to see Wiseman’s Bridge rowers making an impact. The Club has benefitted from the work of Peter Godwin, Club member, in the development of a web forum which aids the organisation of both social and rowing activities The Club enjoys collaboration with Saundersfoot and Llanion Clubs which has enabled safe rowing during the winter months being able to launch from the sheltered harbours. The Club recently underwent free training by the RNLI in how to deal with windy conditions and night time rowing. This was much appreciated. Email: [email protected] As we look forward to the new season from April 1st, we would like to send thanks to our generous sponsors who have contributed hugely to the continued success of the club—Karl Watson, Stepaside Heritage Park, Coors Brewery, The Kemble family for use of their premises for Club meetings and equipment storage, RNLI and the Milford Haven Port Authority. Plans for 2012: Celtic Challenge—90 miles across the Irish Sea; launch of the new Club kit, Olympic and diamond Jubilee themed events. For further details if you fancy having a go (first 2 rows are free!) please contact the Club chairman, Phil Griffiths on 07770572463, or visit the Club website at www.wisemansbridgerowingclub.co.uk
