I come to you today with a heavy heart. We are
going through a tough patch
with so many club members
losing family and friends.
At times like this about all
you can do is lean on your
family. Some of us are
blessed with big families
and some of us have small
families but they are so very
important during rough
times. Please know your
Parrot Head family is here
and we will do what we can
to help. Maybe together we
can move forward and
honor our loved ones by
doing things they loved.
Some loved pets (S.P.C.A.),
some loved the environment
(Road Clean Up), some fought cancer (Relay for
life), how about the golfers (Fat Chuck Golf
Tournaments), Military Veterans (Wounded
Warriors / Donations for the troops). I can name
many more but you get the idea. Bottom line, let's do
our best to keep on keeping on! Thank you so much
for the support you give to the club!

Society members had some role
in staffing this event that
donated over $45,000 to local
nonprofits. Allow me to repeat
that, over $45,000 was donated
from this event in 2014 despite calling for Noah
after the deluge! Think about how many people in
Hanover these donations impact.
Please, start recruiting friends, relatives, coworkers, neighbors or even strangers at the grocery
store to Volunteer for a shift. In this newsletter is a
recruitment poster to hang where you can. These
serve as a way to add volunteers and promote the
event. Please help with the success of the Cook Off!

their help in reaching the $20,000 mark. It took a
team full of dedication and effort to get there.
The theme for this year’s Hanover event
was Super Heroes. The campsite for the teams
Relay For Life 2014 was held at Southwest High
School in Hanover on July 11 and 12. The event
began at noon, but the Parrot Heads were there by
7:30 starting to set up for the event. The Parrot Head
team was part of the Relay of Hanover committee
again, chairing both the Luminaria ceremony and the
Entertainment/Activities for the 24 hour event. So for
most of our Relay team the event lasted way past 24
hours. Ms. El President was the only one that stayed
up all 24 plus hours. I even took a 36 minutes nap.
The Super Parrot Head Heroes came through
again. Sometimes money just appears. Our team was
number one in fundraising at $20,904.19, but if you
add the Bermudian Jaycee $1427.50, Barb’s Angel’s
$700 and It Works $200, which are all part of the
team, the total is $23,531.69. So another year and we
are over $23,000. Great job by a great group of
friends. We are doing our part to fight back.
Local business heroes included Leer Photography,
Something Wicked Brewing, TimBar Packaging, and
Aero Energy. These four businesses did a great job
the two weeks before Relay promoting Relay by
painting their businesses purple. Four spirit awards
were given out by the Paint the Town Purple
committee. The
Spirit award went to
Leer Photography,
and both TimBar
Packaging and Aero
Energy were also
recognized for their
creative ideas used to promote Relay in their
businesses with the Celebrate and Remember Awards.
Cindie Leer of Leer photography was #3 in total
individual fundraising for the event. Something
Wicked, TimBar and Aero Energy both contributed
over $1,000 to our team as well. Thanks for the
support of fellow Parrotheads: Cindie Leer, Cindy
and Jim Staub, Scott Pivoris, Bill and Bridget Seidler,
Steve Buenzow, Joyce Miller and Janice Smith for
was decorated with numerous super heroes
fighting cancer. Our campsite was voted number
one for its Super Hero theme. Thanks to Gabby
and Tammy Emeigh, Janice Smith, Jessy Weaver
and her sister for all their help with the painting.
We were dressed in our Super Hero yellow tie
dyed shirts and look great walking around the
track. Thanks to Kere Washington and Ron and
Jane Bean for helping to get those done. They
showed the Hope that there will be a cure before
more of our members pass to cancer. We made a
statement as always that we party with a purpose,
and in some cases without libations.
The Super Hero event was filled with
hourly super hero laps to keep the event moving
for the 24 hours. We had some crazy costumes
walking around the track, including a visit from
the Hanover Superman. A highlight of the over
night hours was the Super Hero scavenger hunt.
Thanks to Jody and Brian Harker and Lori Staub
with all the help with the entertainment. We added
kids’ activities this year, so while I was painting
bird houses or making masks and capes with little
ones they kept things going with the walking
events. Thanks also to Cindie and Lee Leer for
donating and running the Super Hero photo booth.
They got a lot of great pictures. Thanks to our
band of Heroes for coming for coming to perform

The Luminaira ceremony was
beautiful as always, but people
waiting until it was ready to
start to purchase stick candles
made it a bit hectic. It was a
bit of a rush, but we made it
through. The lighting of the
stick candles was part of the
ceremony in recognition of
those family or friends that
have battled cancer. This was
a very hard event for me, so
Brian, Jody and Lori read the
script for the lightings. Thank
you Sarah for letting me light
my candle for JT from your
candles and to my friends that
were there for me. Kaitlyn
Leer as always sang
beautifully as we made our lap
around the track in silent
remembrance. The track was
beautifully lit with the
luminaria bags, which were
put together the week before
by part of the team with the
help of
some employees from SnyderLance. Thanks to Kim and Jeff
Shull work they did ahead of
time to get ready for putting
the luminaria together and to
everyone that came out to help
on July 5th. As always it was a
wet eye event as we honor,
support and remember the
ones we love.
A special thank you to Kim Shull for all the extra hours
she worked on things before the event putting the bird houses
together and making the lap bead necklaces. She kept JT and I
company. Thanks also to Lori Staub for doing all the luminaria
labels and the slide show, and to Kelly Beck for all her help
throughout the year, it was a lot of long hours for all of us, but
we made it through. The American Caner Society would have
been lost without the help of these lovely ladies.

A SPECIAL NOTE from DOTTIE: Thank you to all our
Parrot Head friends and family for your support during the loss
of JT. He fought hard for 5 years trying to beat the cancer, but
lost the battle. He just did not have any strength left to fight. He
was not ready to leave us, but God only takes the best, so his
time to be relieved of his pain was here. This last year was a hard
struggle, and with friends like you it made it easier. We will miss
him everyday, but know that he is now dancing again.
Thank you to everyone that sent their support and joined us to
celebrate the way JT would have wanted. Thanks to those that
shared: Claudia, Drew, Kai and Bill. We know that JT was the
same his whole life: one to enjoy life and always help. I know
that when he worked he always took gifts to the secretaries and
people that he knew were important to him (like the truck
maintenance guy). Thank you again for making the day special.

CAMEO IN 'JURASSIC WORLD?

This weekend’s blockbuster Jurassic World features a number of
real-life brands on its fictional theme park’s Main Street. Among
the most prominent franchises: Margaritaville, an outpost of the
restaurant chain owned by beloved musician/beach bum Jimmy
Buffett.
As with the rest of the stores and eateries on the boardwalk, the
production team built their own fully functioning Margaritaville,
which they then destroyed during one of the movie’s big dino
rampages. Even better though, is one of the restaurant’s patrons
during that key scene: Buffett himself, who makes a cameo
while the Pteranodons are dive bombing the resort’s visitors.
You might not recognize him at first, but according to the film’s
production designer, Buffett was double-fisting liquor and
mugging for the camera as the sky fell down around him. “It’s
just a little tiny bit when the Pteranodons start to attack and you
see him running, and he’s holding a couple of margaritas,”
Edward Verreaux told Yahoo Movies earlier this week. “He’s
trying to gingerly keep the margaritas safe.”
There’s no photographic evidence of Buffett in the movie yet,
but we did discover a shot of him deep within the Jurassic
World website, where you can see him having a typically joyful
time during a marketing photo shoot.
So, how did the 68-year-old rock legend get so involved with the
movie?
Buffett has been friends with Jurassic World producer Frank
Marshall for over 30 years, and they frequently work together.
Buffett acted in and provided music for the 2011 Marshallproduced family film Hoot, and he had a cameo in the Marshalldirected 1995 movie Congo. The two also partnered on a
Facebook game back in 2013, appropriately titled
Margaritaville.
Given their friendship and Buffett’s presence in the film, it only
made sense that the singer and his Coral Reefer Band performed
at the Jurassic World premiere after-party this week. Star Chris
Pratt generated some headlines when he went up on stage to help
sing “Margaritaville” for the audience, giving Parrotheads even

Stephen Stills is a great
electric guitar soloist, a
formidable multiinstrumentalist, and an
instantly-recognizable
singer who was lucky
enough to run into a couple
of guys named Crosby and
Nash back in the ‘60s. But
those in the know are also
aware of what an
outstanding writer and acoustic guitarist he is as well.
“Treetop Flyer” is the excellent classic track from his 1991 Stills
Alone album, a recording of nearly all unaccompanied mostlyoriginal acoustic songs. The album got mixed reviews, many
from people who (understandably) took issue with the processed
sound of Stills’ Martin guitar. But a great song is a great song,
and “Treetop Flyer” is one of Stills’ finest. It’s the story of a
Vietnam vet who came home from the war with a marketable
new skill: the ability to fly under the radar. When these pilots
returned from combat to a public that often shunned them, and
wouldn’t give them a job or help them deal with what they’d
been through, they found a way to make money with this skill in
running drugs, guns, and whatever other contraband someone
would pay them to deliver.
Stills sings in the first person for this song’s six verses – no
chorus, no bridge – and really sounds like he is the “Treetop
Flyer,” or as if he definitely knows someone who was. This song
has conflict, greed, danger, and a romantic relationship – all the
pieces that make a song important and memorable. At least one
troubadour of the current generation was so influenced by this
song that he decided to make music his career. Ray LaMontagne
credits Stills’ song with prompting him to make the decision that
his life would be music and nothing else. “It was ‘Treetop Flyer’
off a solo record that Stills had done, which really knocked me
out,” LaMontagne told National Public Radio’s Scott Simon in
2006.
Stills Alone is out of print, and it’ll cost you a pretty penny to
find a copy. And don’t look for it on Spotify either – for some
reason probably related to licensing issues, it’s not there. You
can hear the original version of “Treetop Flyer” on YouTube,
though. And you can find Just Roll Tape, an album of Stills
demos that contains an early version of the song, on Spotify. On
Just Roll Tape, Stills sings, “I’ll fly whiskey for you, I’ll fly
guns” in the second verse, but he later changed that line to “I’ll
fly any cargo that you can pay to run” in what would become the
definitive version. In a catalog filled with songs that defined the
sound of a generation, “Treetop Flyer” stands out as one of
Stills’ best pieces of work.
A word of caution if you decide you want to learn how to
play this song. Before you drive yourself nuts trying to figure it
out: Stills’ guitar is tuned to the DADGAD tuning, sometimes
known as Celtic tuning or Bensusan (as in Pierre Bensusan)
tuning. And beware of lyric sites that say the words in the fifth
verse are “I get the shit down, I tie it fast” – Stills is really
singing “ship,” not “shit.” (EdNote: Buffett covered this song on
his Banana Wind CD, but you have to wait till the end and listen
to the dead air for a few seconds when Jimmy comes back
complaining about not being able to find the "hidden track.")

video “Ripple”. The Grateful Dead played its final show on July
5th. Playing for Change has released a video featuring an
international cast of musicians — some well-known, some not
— playing “Ripple”, a song from the great 1970 album
American Beauty. The new clip features appearances by Bill
Kreutzmann, Jimmy Buffett, David Crosby, David Hidalgo of
Los Lobos.
“Ripple” is in support of the Playing For Change Foundation’s
music schools and programs for children worldwide and we need
your help. Watch the video and then let’s turn that inspiration we

Hanover Geo Trail Geocaching, the international treasurehunting game, has come to Hanover!
Main Street Hanover has plotted its very own treasure map,
known as the Hanover Geo Trail. The trail includes over 20
different cache locations throughout the downtown and greater
Hanover area.
What is GeoCaching? Modern adventurers can use their GPS
devices to navigate the path to elusive ‘caches’, which are
hidden containers holding a logbook for the hunters to sign.
GeoCaches are hidden in landmarks, public parks, and even
parking lots and businesses. All geocaches are officially
registered with www.geocaching.com. Participants will need to
register on the website to retrieve coordinates and other location
information. Registration on geocaching.com is free.
A GeoCache app can be downloaded on smart phones,
enabling the cacher to navigate to caches, and find additional
caches nearby. Before setting out to find the caches, you will
need an official passport booklet. Passports are free and can be
downloaded from the Hanover Chamber’s website, or by visiting
the Hanover Chamber/Main Street Hanover office.
Each cache will contain a unique code to be used in your
passport as proof of finding the cache. Cachers who complete 85
percent of the trail or more will receive a commemorative coin,
made specifically for the geo trail, which features the Main
Street Hanover logo. There is no set deadline for completion,
and participants may collect their coin until the supply runs out.

HOW THE MARGARITA GOT ITS NAME

There is nothing better in summer than sitting outside with a cold
margarita – or as Jimmy Buffet might say, wasting away in
Margaritaville.
But while it seems the potent combination of tequila, triple sec
and lime has always been with us, there was a time before the
margarita had its name.
And much like the drink today, with its classic style or frozen
variations, there is much debate about the real story of the
margarita.
What’s in a Name?
The only thing that is sure in the history of the margarita is that,
"there is no fact,” Dominic Alcocer, the director Olmeca Altos
and Tequila Avión at alcohol producer Pernod Ricard says.
“That's the fun part, that's the myth.“
Like many drinks, the margarita at least two histories: one that
tells the history of the name and the other of the ingredients.
“Everyone has a different theory and everyone is right and
wrong.”
But what’s known for sure it that the margarita’s ingredients
have been sipped in some form or another for at least a century.
Chantal Martineau, author of How to Gringos Stole Tequila,
points out that she “found an old cocktail book from 1937 with a
recipe for a drink called a picador. It was exactly the same thing
as a margarita.”
Alcocer says that around the same time, the margarita began to
be called by its current name and notes that all of the origin
stories of the drink date back “to just before the World War Two
era.”
Many believe that the drink was named after Hollywood star Rita Hayworth. (AP)
One popular story attributes its creation to actress Rita
Hayworth, who in the 1940s was doing an extended theater
engagement in Tijuana.
“The actress was evidently somewhat of a barfly and was fond
of tequila,” says Tad Carducci, one of the authors of The
Tippling Brothers: A Lime and a Shaker.
“The bartender was fond of the actress and named his concoction
after her.” Hayworth’s real name? Margarita Carmen Cansino.
Legend has it that when she came back to California she shared
the drink and its popularity grew.
But another more plausible story is that the margarita grew
out of a popular concoction called The Daisy, typically made
with brandy. There’s a tale that another Tijuana bartender in the
1930’s swapped the brandy for tequila.
“The result was so tasty that the customer ordered another,” says
Martineau. “The drink was christened a tequila daisy––and daisy
in Spanish is 'margarita.’”
There is yet another story of a German diplomat’s daughter
named Marguerite who had the drink named after her.
Lacy Hawkins, of Brooklyn’s Clover Club, says that “everyone
has a different theory and everyone is right and wrong.”
The Margarita Boom
The margarita—as we know it today—earned a place in popular
culture by the 1950’s when Esquire magazine made it its ‘Drink
of the Month”.
Tequila sales grew gradually and by the time Jimmy Buffet’s
song Margaritaville came out in 1977, the drink was everywhere.

“Soon, the margarita was a mainstay of Tex-Mex restaurants,
then spread beyond that to become synonymous with spring
break debauchery,” Martineau notes.
It is also hard to pinpoint why the margarita went from a simple
cocktail to a frozen drink phenomenon.
Hawkins says that the popularity of the margarita coincided with
a growth of blended drinks in the 1970’s when the U.S. had a
“technological boom where people could have electronics in
their home and bars.”
But firmly placing it as America’s most ordered cocktail,
according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States
(DISCUS), is the thirst for tequila in the U.S.
DISCUS says that tequila sales went from $962 million in 2003
to $2 billion in 2013.

Reclaiming the True Margarita
A whopping 30 percent of margaritas ordered in restaurants are
flavored, according to DISCUS.
And companies continue to capitalize on the popularity of the
margarita by creating new variations.
“Brands keep releasing alco-pops that trade on that popularity
and mixers that are supposed to be the easier or lower calorie
way to a margarita. It’s not authentic,” Martineau says. ”But it’s
so heavily marketed that it’s taken on a life of its own. So now, a
lot of people think that’s what a margarita is.”
While this is bad news for the purists who see the only way to
drink a margarita is on the rocks with a rim of salt –no blender
required, Alcocer thinks that these trends are leading to a new
evolution of the drink.
“It used to be just maybe a party drink or a boozy brunch drink
or frozen, but now on top of all those uses now there are mezcal
mint and jasmine margaritas. And so that is something that
people are starting to experiment with.”
It’s unclear if it will it still be called a margarita years from
now. But for time being, be it on the rocks, frozen or smelling
like jasmine-- a drink by any other name would taste as sweet.

This beer and cheese dip uses only three basic ingredients, takes
about 15 minutes to prepare and is really good. Each different
beer you use will create a different flavor. ENJOY!
• 12 ounces bottled beer
• 8 ounces cream cheese
• 1 pound cheddar or pepper jack cheese
Directions:
1. Pour the beer in a medium sauce pot and place over medium
heat. Bring to a simmer. When the foam drops - - 2. Cut the cream cheese into cubes and place in the pot. Then
shred the cheddar and add it to the pot.
3. Whisk continually until both cheeses have melted and the beer
cheese dip is smooth. It will look a little thin, but will thicken the
moment it starts to cool.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) – First they took the bras. Now
they’ve come back for the panties.
Police say 140 pairs of underwear have been stolen from a
northeast Pennsylvania store that’s been struck by four bra heists
since February.
Police say the manager of the Victoria’s Secret store reported the
Thursday afternoon theft but couldn’t provide a description of
the suspect or surveillance video.
The underpants are valued at $2,180.
Surveillance video of the April theft showed two women stuffing
bras into a bag. Police say the store never turned over video of
three previous thefts.

‘I just like pigs’ naked man drinking beer arrested in barn
Millersville, PA — A Pennsylvania man is facing a charges after
a nearby farmer busted him in a barn having beers with his pigs.
In the nude.
64-year-old Larry Henry told police, “I just like pigs” when they
found him in the hog barn June 26 about 10:15 p.m.
Henry faces a preliminary hearing. He’s been charged with
trespassing, public drunkenness and indecent exposure
Arrest papers show Henry was previously banned from the farm
since he got caught trespassing four years ago.
Police say Henry smelled of alcohol and acknowledged drinking
a six-pack of Hamm’s beer with the hogs.

Hot dogs and buffalo hot
wings, perfect for July.
Directions:
Grill hot dogs until hot and
to your taste.
I love my hot dogs with a
slightly crispy skin, but I
have one little guy who
won’t eat it if it has even a
black line on it; to each
their own.
Set oven to low broil.
Place the cooked hot dogs
in the hot dog bun, and set on a baking sheet.
Add ¼ cup of blue cheese on top of each hot dog. Set
in oven and broil until the cheese is melted, about 3-5
minutes.
Remove pan from oven. Drizzle hot dogs with buffalo
wild wing sauce and top with green onions and
additional blue cheese if desired.
Serve immediately and devour.
