To keep up with technological advances in the schools,
El Campo ISD is promoting Gaggle to teachers.
Gaggle, a program available “for years,” lets students
send emails, participate in blogs and message boards,
receive homework assignments and much more.
“In a nutshell, Gaggle offers a safe and secure
environment where teachers and students can
communicate,” Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum
and Education Kelly Waters said.
Much like other social networks, students are able to
communicate with other students and teachers, but in a
safe, controlled environment. And only ECISD students
and teachers are allowed on the network.
Gaggle reviewed 3,244 items in the first semester and of
those, 43 were flagged for violations.
“The student might have typed the word ‘beer,’ for
example,” Waters said.

In this instance, Gaggle kicks the item out of the system
and automatically generates an email which gets sent to
the student explaining the violation.

Six items contained questionable content. At this level,
an email is sent to the campus principal as well as other
administrators.

Once the email is received by the district, the campus principal meets with the student who posted the comment to

Gaggle contacted the district and the campus principal then contacted the parent of the student.

Even though access to the program has been available, the utilization numbers are low and the district is now
promoting educators to use it more in their lesson plans, Waters said.

“There are some hot spots where it is happening,” Waters said.

“Our goal is for them to find at least one module they can use in the classroom,” Waters said.
Modules available to the district include assignments, where teachers can create, collect and correct them in a
paperless classroom, Email, class pages, digital lockers, discussion boards, student and teacher blogs, GaggleTube,
instant messaging, integrated calendar and SMS texting.
