CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS
PATTY CAKE! PATTY CAKE!
Is a half hour program of board books, nursery rhymes, songs, and finger plays for
babies ages birth to 17 months and a caregiver. Registration is required.
MOTHER GOOSE
Held once a month from September through June, parents and grandparents of
children ages birth to 24 months come for a half hour of songs, nursery rhymes,
and books. Registration is not required.
1, 2, BUCKLE MY SHOE
Is for children ages 18 through 35 months and their parents or caregivers. It is a
half hour of stories, finger plays, songs, and movement. Registration is required.
MOMMY, DADDY, AND ME
Is designed to provide a setting in which parents or caregivers and their two-yearolds work and play together. This program meets once a week for one hour, and
provides a learning experience by presenting guest speakers who discuss topics
including music, play, nutrition, movement, and early childhood development.
Registration is required.
PICTURE BOOK TIME
Is a half hour of stories, finger plays and songs for children 3 years of age. This
will be your child’s first story time experience without a parent accompanying
him/her into the story room. Registration is required.
PRE-SCHOOL STORY TIME
Is a half hour of stories, finger plays, songs, and more for children 4 or 5 years of
age who have not started kindergarten. Registration is required.
JUST FOR K’S
Is a 45-minute program of stories, songs, and more designed especially for the
child who is currently in kindergarten. Registration is required.
BOOK DISCUSSION GROUPS
Read & Rap
Book discussions designed for 4th and 5th grade boys and girls accompanied
by a parent. Program includes lively discussions and jeopardy game.
Third Grade Kids Read
Book discussions geared towards third grade boys and girls. Have fun while
building reading comprehension.
STORIES AND MORE
Is an hour-long program of stories, with related poems, crafts, magic, cooking
and more, for children currently in 1st and 2nd grades. Registration is required for this 5-week program, which takes place in January through March.
MORE PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES
LET’S MAKE MUSIC
This four-week program is for children, ages 18 to 30 months old, and an
adult. Registration is required.
STORY/CRAFT WORKSHOPS
Various workshops featuring stories and a related craft throughout the year.
Registration is required.
TODDLER MOVIE
Bring your toddlers to the library to enjoy a movie based on a popular book
character. A display of books will be available. Please be advised that there is
no food or drink allowed during the movies. Registration is not required.
NURSERY SCHOOL ART EXHIBIT
Come into the Children’s Room and admire the wonderful artwork of area
nursery schools.

STORYBOOK HALLOWEEN
All are invited to come to the Library for Halloween. Take a walk through Storybook Land and go trick-or-treating from a variety of favorite storybook and
nursery rhyme friends.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
After your child has read one book (or someone has read one to them), come to the
Library and tell us the title and author. For each book reported on, a sticker will
be given out and put in the child’s Reading Club booklet. They will also get an
activity to complete, either here in the library or to take home. When you have
read a minimum number of books, you will be invited to a special program, where
Reading Club Certificates will be awarded.
READ-TO-ME CLUB
Children 4 years old through those entering 1st grade can join the
Read-to-Me Club.
SUMMER READING CLUB
Children entering 2nd grade through 6th grade can join the
Summer Reading Club.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES
DAY AT THE MOVIES
During July and August, a movie will be shown once a week. Please be advised
that an adult must accompany children under 9 years old, and no food or drinks
are allowed during the movies. Registration is not required.
“KOOL KOOKING”
Children in grades kindergarten through 2nd, and grades 3rd through 5th, learn
step-by-step how to prepare lunch. Registration required.
PAJAMA STORY TIME
Nighttime story hour for children ages 4 to 7 who can come dressed in pajamas,
and spend 45 minutes listening to stories. Registration is not required.
TALES FOR TOTS
Teenage volunteers will be in the Children’s Room, waiting to read stories to children of all ages three afternoons a week.
I CAN READ!
Beginning readers in grades 1st and 2nd grades are invited to read to some teenagers who are eager to listen to their progress.
SPECIAL FEATURES
KOOL KITS
Backpacks filled with books, puzzles, games, and more, which will keep children
occupied for many hours as you travel. The Kool Kits contain activities for children ages 4-12, and may be borrowed, one per family, from the Children’s Room
for a two-week period, available on a first come, first serve basis.
SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS
School teachers can notify the Children’s Room of impending assignments in their
classes that require library materials on certain topics. These books will be on
display for children to use in their reports.
PARENTING PAGE
PARENT’S COLLECTION is a special collection of books on issues in parenting.
WELCOME NEW SIBLING KIT: I’M A BIG BROTHER, I’M A BIG SISTER
This kit is designed to ease your child’s anxiety concerning the arrival of a new
brother or sister. Included in this kit is an anatomically correct “newborn doll”
(your choice: boy or girl, light or dark skin) with clothes, diapers to change, videocassettes, books, pamphlets, and more. The New Sibling Kit may be borrowed
for one week. Reservations are required and may be made up to five months in
advance.
NURSERY SCHOOL FAIR
Meet representatives from over 25 nursery and pre-schools in the Centerport,
Greenlawn, Huntington, Northport-East Northport, and South Huntington areas.
Each school will have a display giving an overview of their school. This evening
will be the only time you will be able to see all the schools in one place. Registration is required. This program is open to everyone, and is not limited to Harborfields residents.

A directory of Pre-School and Child Care Facilities for the communities of Centerport, East Northport, Greenlawn, Huntington, Huntington Station, and Northport. Each facility is listed under the town in which it is located, with the address
and director’s name, and information on ages, hours, and individual features.

JUVENILE. All books in the Children’s Room are J. If there is no further classification, this book will be found in Fiction, filed alphabetically by author’s last
name, then by title. All mysteries, horror stories, science fiction, historical fiction,
fantasy, and large type (JLT) are interfiled with fiction, and are designated with a
specific spine label.

PICTURE BOOK. Found in the Picture Book section, alphabetically by author’s
last name, then by title. Big Books are a collection of oversized versions of many
picture books.
JP Pink Dot
PICTURE BOOK PINK DOT. Found in the beginning of the picture books, they
are smaller sized picture books.

BOARD BOOKS. A collection of sturdy books for infants and toddlers, found in the
Board Book House, in the middle of the Picture Book area.

EASY-TO-READ. Found in the Easy-To-Read section, filed alphabetically by
author’s last name, then by title. ETR Non-Fiction is interfiled with Non-Fiction.

PAPERBACK BOOKS. Found in the Fiction section. Blue spine labeled books are
part of an Easy-to-Read series. Green spine-labeled books are part of a series for
children in grades 3 and up.

BOOKS ON TAPE. A collection of Fiction and Easy-to-Read books on audiocassettes, filed alphabetically by author’s last name, then by title.

BOOKS ON CD. A collection of Fiction and Easy-to-Read books on CD, filed alphabetically by author’s last name, then by title.
JDVD and JVHS
VIDEOS. A collection of children’s educational and recreational videos, and DVD’s,
along with children’s movies, filed alphabetically by series and then title, found in
the Elsener Media Center.
JCDROM
CD-ROMS. A collection of Children’s CD-ROMs featuring educational games,
children’s stories, children’s songs, and critical thinking.
COMPUTER RULES
•
The Children’s Room has four computers in the preschool area, offering ageappropriate educational games, for children 7 years of age and younger.
•
There are six computers at the front of the room offering Homework Help,
encyclopedias and online databases for school research. Microsoft Word is
featured on the computers, for homework and report writing, which is connected to a printer.
•
Preference is given to Harborfields Public Library cardholders.
•
An adult must accompany children in grades 2 and younger at all times.
•
There is Internet access for children in the Children’s Room. The Internet is
available to children ages 7 years old through grade 6, after they have a permission form signed by a parent on file. •
Children must have a Parental Consent Form on file in the Children’s Room to
have access to the Internet.
•
Children must present their Library card when using the Internet.
