Leading the Way in Composites
It wasn’t so many years ago that automobiles were forged from steel, aircraft
from aluminum, and boats fiberglass. Times have certainly changed. The
same pioneer spirit that unrelentingly challenges us to break barriers, reach
new heights and explore the unknown, has also required us to find new
materials, ones that can withstand the laws of physics, the forces of nature
and our insatiable desire to push the envelope.
Washington State’s entry into the world of exotic materials and advanced
manufacturing capabilities can be traced to the 1960s when a small company
known as Heath Tecna began to produce revolutionary new materials
for defense projects. Today, we are home to more than 100 companies
engaged in composites and advanced materials research and development,
fabrication, production and tooling, creating an industry that generates $3.3+
billion in annual revenue.
A veritable who’s who of industry innovators
The demand for composites and the tools and technologies to produce them
has never been greater and Washington companies have not only met the
demand, but in some respects, created it. Janicki Industries, which introduced
composites to the marine manufacturing industry back in 1993, continues to
provide customers in aerospace, wind, marine technologies and energy with
groundbreaking engineering, fabrication and manufacturing services. Other
visionary companies can be found in Washington as well, including Fiberlay,
Inc., Heatcon Composite Systems and BMW/SGL, which built a $100 million
composites plant in Washington for its new generation of automobiles.
Supporting our composites
sector are leading edge
research and development
programs overseen by some
of the leading researchers
in the country, including
Automobili Lamborghini
Advanced Composite Structures
Laboratory, the Center for
Excellence for Aerospace
and Advanced Materials, Western Washington University’s Departmentof
Engineering Technology and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

leading the way with innovative solutions to tomorrow’s challenges.
Become a Business Legend. Come to Washington State.
5
Washington State.
We build business legends.
It’s no secret that Washington State is the birthplace of business legends.
Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft, Costco, Starbucks, REI, Nordstrom – they all got
their starts here. Other companies aren’t household names quite yet, but
give them time. From lattes and wine to composite aircraft and luxury yachts,
“made in Washington” goods have found their way around the world and into
the hearts and minds of millions of customers.
It shouldn’t be surprising that Washington State has given rise to so many
legendary businesses. It’s part of the pioneer spirit that defines the Pacific
Northwest, a spirit that continues to drive visionary businesses who see
challenges as opportunities and who turn adversity into unbridled success.
Indeed, Washington State has become an epicenter of innovation and growth
in composites, providing businesses worldwide with new opportunities for
investment, partnership and expansion. The state’s equidistance between
Asia and Europe, savvy trade culture, robust supply chain and outstanding
quality of life offer everything a success-driven business is looking for.
A culture of innovation
Washington’s culture of innovation
encourages and fosters new ways
of thinking, turning ideas into
viable products and services that
often go on to become cultural
icons, deeply entrenched in the
fabric of society. Our competitive
nature drives entrepreneurs
and established companies to
challenge the status quo, engage in calculated risk taking, embrace new
ideas and overcome challenges, removing roadblocks to progress, invention
and innovation along the way. It’s one of the many reasons why Startup
Genome named Seattle the 4th best place to start a business in the world.
New discoveries flow daily from our research labs, incubators and start-ups,
brought to market by experienced entrepreneurs and businesses who not
only know how to stay ahead of the curve, but shape it in the process.
6
A skilled, talented workforce
One of the cornerstones of building
a business legend is access to a
talented, experienced workforce.
Washington State offers companies
one of the most highly educated
and trained workforces in the
United States. By nature, state
residents are curious, driven
and thrive in an environment
where learning is a lifelong pursuit and passion. The state’s two major
public universities – the University of Washington and Washington State
University – as well as the many smaller public and private two and four year
educational institutions, have international reputations for excellence. This
diverse, integrated ecosystem of education and workforce training ensures a
steady supply of qualified, talented individuals to fill the emerging needs of
companies in the composites sector.
A global hub for exports
The world knows Washington for
its apples, cherries, airplanes and
software, but the state exports
a wide array of goods overseas,
including composites, robotics,
machinery, medical devices, wood,
oil and chemical products. Thanks to
the state’s centralized location (it is
equidistant via polar routes to Asia
and Europe), Washington products
can be shipped easily and economically around the world. Fully a third of
the state’s economic growth comes from international trade. One of the true
advantages of doing business in and with Washington State is its 75 ports;
some of which can cut transit times of goods to and from Asia by a full day, a
critical competitive advantage for those engaged in international trade.
7
Abundant, low-cost energy
Many businesses today require
substantial amounts of energy,
including those engaged in
advanced materials manufacturing.
Washington State is a veritable
powerhouse of affordable energy,
offering composites companies the
power they need where and when
they need it. The state boasts the
largest coordinated hydroelectric system in the world. Seventy five percent
of the state’s power comes from the 50,000 miles of rivers and streams that
course their way through the state. This abundant source of energy as well
as a growing reliance on wind, solar and other clean energy sources, offers
businesses in the state power rates as low as 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Washington’s affordable power was one of the main reasons BMW/SGL
Group located a carbon fiber facility in state to build their new i-series electric
cars.
A great place to live and work
If you’re interested in investing
in the region or thinking about
locating operations in Washington,
you’ll find that the state’s quality
of life is a major bonus. For
those who love the outdoors, it’s
possible to sail, hike and ski, all in
the same day. There’s plenty of
world-class dining, a vibrant arts
scene, delightful communities
surrounded by stunning beauty and lots of activities to keep you active year
round. While the skies of Washington can be gray and rainy at times, the state
actually gets less rain annually than Florida and the eastern part of the state
gets more sun – 300 days a year on average. And when the sun comes out,
nearly everyone agrees that Washington State is one of the most beautiful
and spectacular places on earth.
8
Become a Washington State legend
Washington State has a rich history of fostering, nurturing and building some
of the most well-known businesses and highly respected brands in the world.
To help you do business in Washington, the state has a team of seasoned
business professionals who can offer you expertise, insight and assistance.
They can help you discover new market opportunities, locate new sites for
your planned expansion, develop innovative workforce training programs,
