When Jane Naveros joined Neighbor’s front desk in 2000, our file system consisted of index cards. Grocery bags of food were packed for clients in what now is the main office. We had approximately 200 families receiving food assistance. Today we provide food for over 660 families each year. Leading up to tonight’s celebration we had the pleasure to speak with many dedicated, bright, determined individuals who have made Neighbor to Neighbor what it is today. Our roots lay in the desire not just to provide assistance for those who lack resources, but to bring neighbors together to get to know each other. Our founders lived in Port Chester, and in Greenwich, and had a vision to strengthen our communities. It was the early 1970’s and these early leaders felt that all things were possible. They were right. With the combined efforts of our community partners, donors, volunteers and supporters, we have come far, and continue along our journey. We led the trend toward client choice back in 2005 with the area’s first client choice pantry. We added Thanksgiving turkey distributions in the fall and prom dress distributions in the spring. We continually commit ourselves to the philosophy of community collaboration to meet community needs. We thank you for joining us in the journey. Nancy Coughlin Executive Director Allen Jackson President Please join us in thanking Neighbor to Neighbor’s Past Presidents for their leadership and dedication. Susan Adorney Judy Barker Doris Casale Kathy Fawcett Jane Fleming Allen Jackson Pam Kelly Soraya Mariel Sandy Motland - 5 - Anita O’Sullivan Julie Ricciardi Alma Rutgers Betty Sheridan In Honour Of Betty, Jane and Anne You three were an inspiration for many that followed. Greenwich and the neighbouring towns have all been wonderful beneficiaries of your generosity, hard work and determination. Your children celebrate you as role models as you set an example for an entire generation of Sheridans, Flemings and Westerfields! Much love, Jim, Tom, Julie and Maria (Sheridan) - 6 - A Letter from our Event Co-Chairs Dear Neighbors, Welcome! It has been our pleasure co-chairing Neighbor to Neighbor’s ‘Filling Bowls for Forty Years’ event. Forty years is a wonderful milestone for Neighbor and an opportunity to celebrate where we came from, where we stand and where we are going. The goal of Neighbor is to make differences in the lives of the people we serve, half of whom are Greenwich’s children. Other beneficiaries of your donations tonight will be the seniors, working poor, unemployed and adults with physical, emotional and intellectual challenges in our town. Our services are as vital today as they were at our beginning and, not surprising, the need for them has grown. We are always striving to provide food and clothing in a more thoughtful, caring and efficient manner. Through Neighbor, each dollar you donate could purchase $2.80 worth of food. What a great return! Your support tonight will help make that and everything we do possible. Thank you! Tonight’s support has been overwhelming. Through planning this event, we have learned that Neighbor is made up of caring, dedicated, hard-working staff, volunteers and supporters who tackle problems and find solutions together. This year’s event would not have been possible without everyone working as a team. That is what Neighbor does best- work with Neighbors to build a stronger community. We greatly appreciate you joining us. Have a wonderful evening! We couldn’t have done it without Betty and Jane. ~~ Doris & Joe Casale ~~ - 10 - Meet Our Honorees Jane Fleming spent many years as a young mother transporting her children’s outgrown clothing to parts of upper New York City to be reused, rather than to the local landfill. She was inspired by this experience to create an organization locally to provide gently used clothing to local residents in need. In the late 1960’s, she led a group of like-minded women who garnered the support of local houses of worship and civic organizations in Greenwich and Port Chester, establishing Neighbor to Neighbor, incorporating in 1975. Jane’s children recall hours of accompanying their mother on trips to pick up or drop off items for clients. Says her son Peter, “I am astonished that it has been 40 years. It seems like just yesterday my brother Jim and I were making pick-ups for Neighbor in our pick up truck under extreme maternal duress. She was very proud of what Neighbor has been able to achieve and would be extremely pleased to see how those early efforts have been amplified and made even more effective in serving the needs of the community.” Jane passed away in 1990; we remain in her debt for her vision and wisdom. Betty Sheridan began her long association with Neighbor to Neighbor in 1975 after moving to Greenwich with her husband Bob and four children. Her friend Anne Westerfield introduced her to Neighbor to Neighbor, then a newly incorporated nonprofit organization. Betty quickly became a committed volunteer, working in the clothing room, spearheading a furniture program, and serving in numerous leadership capacities. She joined the Board of Directors and served as President from 1976 – 1982 and again from 1988 – 1991. Betty became a Board Member Emeritus in 2004, a position she held until retiring from the Board in 2014. Betty continues to volunteer every Monday in the clothing room during the 6 months each year that she and Bob reside in Greenwich and serve in any capacity when called upon. Neighbor to Neighbor is extremely grateful to Betty and the entire Sheridan family for their many years of dedication and support. - 11 - - 12 - From the Archives - Our Founding Letter, 1975 - 13 - About the Silent Auction 1.
