to the community 2014 - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio!
Dear Friends, We are an agency that always puts the kids first – kids like those featured below and throughout this report. This guides our decision-making and keeps us focused as we reach toward the collective impact community goal that Learn4Life has stated so clearly: to ensure that every child receives the support they need from cradle to career in order to succeed academically and achieve a fulfilling career. Whether we are collaborating with a partner, aligning with a new agency, or matching a volunteer with a child, helping kids succeed is at the core of all we do. That’s why we are the only Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in the country with a year-round residential camp – because we know our kids achieve incredibly positive outcomes at our Camp Oty’Okwa. That’s why our Mentoring Center of Central Ohio provides background checks, volunteer training and technical assistance to 35 mentoring organizations – because we want the best for every youth in a mentoring relationship. That’s why we lead Amachi Ohio – because kids with an incarcerated parent need a Mentor and achieve greater success in life with a Mentor to guide them and be a role model. That’s why we lead Connecting the Dots for youth aging out of foster care – because these young adults end up homeless or incarcerated too often and need a Mentor to guide and connect them with post-secondary education and career opportunities. That’s why we have welcomed three Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies as new subsidiaries – because we can consolidate administrative functions and share skill functions so more funding can go to serving more kids. We ask ourselves what is best for kids. Kids facing adversity in their lives need the motivation to take on new challenges, the resilience to turn adversity into strength, and the grit to persevere. Without these character strengths as a foundation, they may not attain the academic achievement necessary for high school graduation and post-secondary education/career success. Our outcomes clearly demonstrate that our mentoring programs help kids build that foundation for success (see page 2), and independent national research proves that the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring model works. We are proud to be part of a community that understands it’s all about the kids and is working together to help them succeed. On behalf of the central Ohio kids we serve, we thank our volunteers, donors, partners, collaborators, staff and board members for making it possible to bring the positive impact of mentoring to children throughout central Ohio. Sincerely, Adam Lewin, Board Chair to the community 2014 Edward N. Cohn, President and CEO 7 8 10 21 Financial Report Our Partners Our Donors Our Volunteers Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio Since 1933, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio has been putting kids first, more than 100,000 of them over the years. Last year, we provided our proven mentoring services to 2,665 central Ohio children through one-to-one mentoring relationships, plus 4,410 through group mentoring at our Camp Oty’Okwa in the Hocking Hills. Outcomes and research data inform our efforts to continuously improve our processes and programs… all with the goal of having a positive impact on more children’s lives. In 2013-2014, our outcomes remained strong. For the second consecutive year, over 93% of the youth who returned our Youth Outcome Surveys reported improvement in at least one category, and more than 78% reported improvement in at least two. Each survey contains questions grouped around categories such as Social Acceptance, Scholastic Efficacy, Educational Expectations, Academic Performance, Attitudes Toward Risky Behaviors, Parental Trust, Truancy and Special Adult in Your Life, all measures which have been found to be reliable and valid by renowned academic researchers. On our Strength of Relationship survey, youth again told us how much it means to them to have a Mentor in their life. Youth in our programs rated the strength of their relationship with their Mentor at 4.72 on a 5.0 scale, which is very important since national research tells us that longer, stronger matches have the most impact. Both of these survey instruments were designed especially for Big Brothers Big Sisters nationally by Jean Rhodes of the University of Massachusetts, Jean Grossman of Princeton University, and Carla Herrera of Public/Private Ventures. Both agencies made this decision with the strong support of their Board and community. Their goal is to serve more kids in the local community by drawing upon the resources and expertise of a larger agency for some essential functions such as accounting, information technology, development and marketing. We continue to have a positive impact on children beyond central Ohio by leading Amachi Ohio, the collaboration of Ohio Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies serving children of incarcerated parents. During the past year, 520 additional children of incarcerated parents were served across the state. We led the program and acted as fiscal agent, as well as providing 170 additional central Ohio children of incarcerated parents a mentoring relationship. We also led the Big Brothers Big Sisters participation in Connecting the Dots, a pilot initiative serving young adults who will soon age out of foster care. This program, funded by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, has forged stronger relationships between children services agencies and workforce investment agency service providers, as well as five additional Ohio Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies and our Mentoring Center of Central Ohio, which created curriculum for training all of the groups involved. More than 75 young adults have now been matched with a mentor, providing support and coaching as they transition into adulthood. We continue to enhance our Community-based, School-based and Camp Oty’Okwa mentoring programs. Many of last year’s enhancements supported the academic lift goals of our We are excited that our family has grown in 2014. Big Brothers school district partners, Learn4Life Columbus, and other Big Sisters of South Central Ohio (headquartered in community groups. To support school readiness and literacy, Chillicothe) aligned with our agency in January 2014, and we partnered with Highlights and launched two pilot Project Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio (headquartered Mentor programs with special focus on literacy at South Mifflin in New Philadelphia) joined the family in September 2014. and Livingston Elementary Schools. Our School-based programs “Our experience has become stronger each year, and we have become great friends. He has a lot more balls to juggle in his life than I had when I was a teenager. This has been an enlightening learning experience for me.” - Big Brother “She has helped me to understand how important it is to finish high school and go to college, and I know that is the best plan for me to have a successful future.” - Little Sister Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally-supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. “Our mentors have stated that without the Mentoring Center trainings, they would spend one year trying to “figure out” their mentee, rather than build the relationships that are imperative to a successful mentor-mentee match.” - Partner of The Mentoring Center of Central Ohio 2 Report to the Community 2014 Our Programs at those schools start with first graders and are designed with activities to increase the Mentee’s literacy and reading skills. To support middle school math proficiency, we have built opportunities to teach math skills into our middle school Project Mentor activities. Also, our Mentoring Center of Central Ohio has built this focus into the Mentor trainings it provides for Project Mentor volunteers, as well as volunteers for its partner agencies. Our Camp Oty’Okwa, too, has supported academic lift through environmental education programs, and partnered with 25 schools last year to offer students opportunities to learn about the environment in the beautiful Hocking Hills. Camp Oty’Okwa’s programs are aligned with Ohio’s academic content standards. At the core of it all is putting kids first, and providing more kids with the positive impact of mentoring relationships. We know that kids facing adversity need motivation, grit and resilience in order to achieve success. National research proves that Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring works; our measurable outcomes demonstrate that our kids are developing the character strengths they need as the foundation for academic achievements, graduation and post-secondary success. Community-based Mentoring (including Amachi Ohio) Through our research-based Community-based Mentoring program, we match a caring volunteer “Big” from the community on a one-to-one basis with a “Little” to provide an additional caring role model and adult friend in the child’s life. Our professional team works to forge relationships with our families, children and volunteers through the entire match relationship. Most of the children we serve are facing adversity, including family financial hardships, social/emotional issues, and poverty of positive adult relationships. In addition, we reach out to children of incarcerated parents through our Amachi Ohio program. School-based mentoring (including Project Mentor) We served students in 14 different Ohio school districts through our School-based Mentoring program, which pairs a Mentor from the community on a one-to-one basis with a student Mentee. The Mentor and Mentee meet up once a week for about an hour at school. Our largest School-based Mentoring Program, Project Mentor, is a collaboration with Columbus City Schools. Mentors come from more than 80 businesses, government organizations, community groups, faith-based organizations and the community at large. Camp Oty’Okwa Our Camp Oty’Okwa in the Hocking Hills is a positive and supportive environment where campers interact with their peers while receiving guidance from an adult. With the backdrop of the beautiful Hocking Hills, Camp Oty’Okwa strives to enhance each child’s self-worth by bolstering four basic components of self-esteem: significance, competence, power and virtue. We serve children at camp through summer camp and environmental education programs, which are aligned with Ohio’s academic content standards. “There are many challenges to parenting, especially as a single parent. Seeing my son with his Big Brother and watching their relationship has been heartwarming. He needed a positive adult model, and his Big Brother has been that model.” - Parent of Little Brother “Camp Oty’Okwa is a wonderful experience for my son. His self-confidence increased due to positive affirmations from staff; he feels competent there and welcomed.” - Parent of Camp Oty’Okwa Camper The Mentoring Center of Central Ohio With 35 Ohio youth mentoring organizations as partners, our Mentoring Center is a collaborative effort that is increasing the quality and quantity of mentoring in our communities. The Mentoring Center provides training (both in-person and online) for Mentors and Mentees, volunteer background checks for partner organizations, and program guidance helping partner organizations achieve child safety and effective practices. Together with partners, the Mentoring Center touches the lives of over 5,000 young people each year, and has trained nearly 28,000 Mentors since its founding in 2000. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio 3 Spotlighted Mentoring Matches Community-based Spotlighted Match Little Brother Jesse & Big Brother Jeff Walton School-based Spotlighted Mentoring Match Mentee Shandale and Mentor Michael Robinson When Little Brother Jesse was first matched with his Big Brother Jeff Walton, both were excited but neither guessed that their relationship would grow to span nine years. Now that Jesse is a senior at Linworth Alternative High School, he looks back and says it was nice to have Jeff as an older role model to give him advice and provide different perspectives on life. Mentee Shandale met his Mentor Michael Robinson six years ago, when Shandale was a fourth-grader at Windsor STEM Academy. They’ve been meeting weekly ever since. Shandale is the second oldest of nine children. Michael, who is employed at Nationwide, is a strong supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters and a member of the agency’s African American Advisory Council. Jeff, CEO of Abitec, is a chemist and has encouraged Jesse’s interest in science through the years. In addition to science, Jesse is a talented musician. He has grown as a performer over the years, and when he was a freshman in High School, he also began composing his own orchestral pieces! Today, Jesse is a talented musician who writes music, sings and plays many instruments. His career interests include both music and science…molecular biology, to be specific. Shandale and Michael have enjoyed Project Mentor, and they both especially like the science projects. Shandale says that Michael has helped him with math and encouraged him to read. “He used to ask me how I knew about so many things,” says Michael, “and I told him I read a lot. We agreed that he would read for 30 minutes a day, just anything he could get his hands on.” “It has been great to see Jesse grow up and mature,” says Jeff. “He has become more outgoing, does well in school and has grown in his music. He is ready to tackle his next task…college.” With their nine-year history together, Jesse and Jeff are a perfect example of a long, strong mentoring match that has had a positive impact on both the Little and the Big! Shandale has his sights set on college. When asked what he has learned from Michael that he will carry with him on his journey to graduation, he is quick to respond, “take the high road” and “respond, don’t react”. This match has grown very close, so close that when Shandale was faced with deciding which school to transition into after Windsor, he decided to attend Linden-McKinley because Michael was able to continue mentoring him in the Project Mentor program there! Alumni Little Brother Jimmy Galvan When Jimmy Galvan came to America with his mother, brother and sister, the transition to a new country with a new language was a struggle. But the next year, when he was matched with a Big Brother as a seventh grader at Norton Middle School, things started to fall in place. “My English was not the greatest yet,” says Jimmy, “and he helped me with focus on schoolwork. We hit it off right away, and we talked a lot about life in general.” The following summer, Jimmy had another new experience, as a camper at Camp Oty’Okwa. “At first I was scared,” he says, “because it seemed like we were going out in the middle of nowhere. But by the end, I thought it was the coolest place.” Jimmy attended camp for several years. Along the way, he became close friends with Elizabeth Martinez, Vice President of Programs for the agency, and Rich Gandarillas, Board Member and past Board Chair, and stayed connected with the agency and staff. Then, Jimmy was matched with another Big Brother when he was a freshman at Westland High School. “He was a college student,” Jimmy says, “and he got my mind settled on going to college after high school.” Alumni Little Brother Jimmy Galvan 4 Today, Jimmy is a college graduate, husband and father, and an excellent soccer player. He recently returned from a wonderful opportunity to participate in pre-season training with the professional Chicago Mustangs soccer team! Jimmy has many exciting options ahead, and, as his career develops, he intends to continue giving back and helping others like Big Brothers Big Sisters helped him. Report to the Community 2014 The Milton Lewin Legacy Award The Milton Lewin Legacy Award honors Milt’s lifelong dedication and service to our agency and the at-risk children of central Ohio. Milt’s dedication and commitment to Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout his life included volunteering as a Big Brother, serving as a Board member, and co-chairing the agency’s first capital campaign. Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio recognizes a valued partner with the coveted Milton Lewin Legacy Award. Huntington National Bank is the winner of the 2014 Milton Lewin Legacy Award, which has been presented by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio annually since 2006. As the major regional Midwest bank headquartered in Columbus, Huntington and its colleagues are deeply committed to giving back to their communities in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Each year, they strengthen communities by investing millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours. In fact, 1,200 Huntington colleagues gave over 27,000 hours back to their communities in 2013! Huntington has been cited many times for its work in its communities, including: 2013 Community Partner of the Year from the Ohio Community Development Corporation Association and Best Online Giving Campaign from the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. In 2013, Huntington was a lead sponsor for Pelotonia. The bank’s team included 1,200 riders, 500 virtual riders and 800 volunteers! In addition, Huntington has helped to teach children about financial literacy, and last year, the bank’s backpack program helped 15,000 students from low-income families receive school supplies and backpacks! Central Ohio kids benefit from Huntington’s broad-based commitment to our community. Huntington associates have served as both Community-based and School-based mentors. Huntington’s support for our work has included providing Huntington colleagues participated in Bowl for Kids’ Sake strategic leadership and vision through local Board participation, and in April of 2014, following Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio’s alignment with our agency, Nan Sklenar, Vice President/Business Banker for Huntington in Chillicothe, also joined our Central Ohio Board of Directors. She has served on Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Ohio’s Board of Directors since 2009, and is chairing the Resource Development Committee. Since 2006, significant grants from Huntington have provided important support for our bilingual mentoring program and Project Mentor. In addition, 40-50 kids have experienced Camp Oty’Okwa each year for 20 years, thanks to funding Huntington has provided to send West Broad Elementary School children to Camp. Huntington has been instrumental in helping Big Brothers Big Sisters raise the funds necessary to provide mentors to more central Ohio children. Each year, Huntington associates participate in Bowl for Kids’ Sake, and Huntington has participated as a Sponsor since 2005. In addition, Huntington has been a consistent Hero Sponsor of our black-tie gala fundraising event, A Taste of Class for Kids, since 2003. We are honored to recognize Huntington with the Milton Lewin Legacy Award, and we thank you for all you do for the kids of central Ohio!
