Re-opening Our House - George Mark Children`s House
Volume 9 Fall 2010 Christian Peacock Photograpy Re-opening Our House It’s official! George Mark Children’s House will re-open on October 4, 2010 offering the same outstanding care that you’ve come to expect, backed by a new, sustainable business model that ensures long-term viability. MATCHING GRANT! And just how are we doing it? Since March, we’ve had an intense transition period, during which we’ve focused on creating a sustainable business plan, and moving it forward. Our Transition Team—comprised of senior administration, and select clinical staff, board members, and community partners in health care—worked together diligently to meet our goals. It’s true! Your donation will be matched dollar for dollar by The Washington Hospital Healthcare System (WHHS) up to $125,000. When George Mark’s new business plan is fully realized, 60% of revenue will come from insurance and patient payments, and 40% from donations. In the past as you know, we’ve had to raise 85% from donations to meet our expenses, which became increasingly difficult and eventually impossible in this economic climate. This is what we’ve achieved: •Expanded insurance reimbursement through full utilization of our CLHF (Congregate Living Health Facility) license to support the provision of sub-acute level care. •Confirmed participation in a reimbursement-related pilot waiver program, which resulted from the Nick Snow Children’s Hospice & Palliative Care Act of 2006. • Outsourced finance, accounting and human resources as a cost reduction measure. • Expanded insurance billing through pro-bono services supplied by Washington Hospital. •Received significant funding from California HealthCare Foundation, The Hearst Foundations and The Washington Hospital Healthcare Foundation, among others. • Currently negotiating contracts with insurance agencies. • Discussing partnership agreements and referrals with Bay Area hospitals. • Clinical staff hiring and utilization will be based on patient acuity and census. •Continue to work with the California legislature and insurance companies to increase reimbursement for pediatric palliative care. •Exploring additional earned income streams such as revenue for ongoing and specialized medical training that we provide. George Mark continues to rely on the generosity of individual donors to help fund operations and capital expenditures, allowing us to continue offering services to patients who lack financial resources. We look forward to keeping in touch with you—our family and friends— through our traditional and e-newsletters and our newly revamped, interactive website. With sincere thanks to all, Peter A. Farber-Szekrenyi, CEO Doubling your Donation Your generous donation today will increase the momentum as we near the re-opening on October 4th. An envelope is included to make your contribution close to effortless. The Washington Hospital Healthcare System has provided true leadership with this matching grant. An additional $125,000 has challenged our transition team too. We received $50,000 from WHHS when we clarified our license with the California Department of Public Health. And, we’re close to achieving two additional milestones that are linked to dollars. When a partnership with a major healthcare system for referrals and transfers is finalized, we receive $25,000. When a new contract is signed with an insurance provider, $50,000 will be forthcoming. In total, our close community partner— The Washington Hospital Healthcare System—will have contributed $250,000! It’s a challenge we can all work together to achieve for our children and their families. 2 Life Around the House Founder’s Forum Kathy N. Hull, Psy.D., M.A. & Barbara Beach, M.D. Respite Care A Vacation for Erica Carmella Panghulan, with help from husband Tito and sister Kristin, Erica at George lovingly care for Erica Mark’s 2009 Prom at home. Nineteen year-old Erica has severe respiratory challenges as well as Sanfilippo Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder she shared with her brother Christian, who died at age 17 in 2004. In January 2010, the family planned a move to San Jose, which involved remodeling a bathroom so that it would be accessible for Erica. The family turned to the only option available: George Mark Children’s House, which was recommended by Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. As with every trip away from home, even to a doctor’s appointment, Erica was taken by ambulance to George Mark for a stay of 20 days. Carmella told Erica that she was going to enjoy her vacation, and enjoy it she did! Touching miniature horses and a snake, creating art, and riding through the beautiful gardens were all part of her stay. Hydrotherapy was a favorite treat according to Carmella, who was surprised and delighted to see her daughter relax in the water, moving her hands and legs. Her mother knew that Erica returned home happier, and with a stabilized respiratory condition. The Panghulan family welcomes the opportunity to bring Erica back for a visit later this year, and is thankful for the skilled nursing, compassionate care and wonderful volunteers. While the Panghulan’s insurance covers Erica’s transportation, it does not cover respite care. George Mark will continue to rely on the generosity of donors who share our dreams for patients like Erica. An introduction is in order! Please welcome Dr. Peter A. Farber-Szekrenyi, M.P.H., M.B.A., Chief Executive Officer of George Mark Children’s House. He has brought a strong range of skills to successfully envision and move George Mark to the next stage of its organizational life. Peter is a healthcare executive with a successful track record in managing companies from $5 million to $2.5 billion in annual revenues in a variety of ownership structures, including governmental, non-profit, for profit, and a New York Stock Exchange company. He has more than 20 years of CEO experience in administration, finance, and turn-around management in the healthcare industry and has been a teacher and lecturer at UCLA. As founding principal of Szekrenyi Consulting Inc., Peter has been providing administrative/operational and consulting services in the Bay area since 1995 to such institutions as Alameda County Medical Center, Alameda Healthcare Services Agency, Marin Healthcare District Board, Contra Costa Healthcare District, and San Joaquin Healthcare Services Agency. He has also been Governor Schwarzenegger’s appointee to the Federal Courts regarding the delivery of healthcare in the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. Our special thanks to interim Executive Director Julie Brewer, who continues to serve on the board of George Mark Children’s House. We are so grateful for her extraordinary dedication to our mission. As you know, George Mark is the first pediatric palliative care facility in the nation. We are a national model for end-of-life, transitional and respite care for children and their families. Being a pioneer brings welcome responsibilities. Providing guidance to groups that want to provide pediatric palliative care services in their communities is part of what we do to help children and their families across the country. We send our congratulations to Phoenix’s Ryan House, which opened earlier this year. The group visited and studied our facility, utilizing George Mark’s staff to plan for the layout of their facility, which also houses an adult hospice, as well as for equipment needs, and the set-up of policies and equipment. In October, we resume our in-patient services with a more sustainable business model. We’ll again be employing the latest medical techniques and technology, delivered by a compassionate interdisciplinary team that includes the skills of a Medical Director, Program Director, Nurse Case Manager, Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Certified Nurse Assistant, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Spiritual Care Coordinator, Volunteer Manager, Child Life Specialist, and Psychologist. End-of-life care, transitional care and respite care will all be provided in a life-affirming setting that meets the physical and emotional needs of each member of the family unit. To the tireless work of the transition team, our board, staff, and volunteers, and the donors who have given George Mark Children’s House the gift of time, we extend our sincere thanks! Co-founders Kathy Hull and Barbara Beach Volume 9 / Fall 2010 Thanks from the Heart July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010 We were honored this year to be the beneficiary of an outpouring of thoughtfulness. Your donation may have memorialized or honored those closest to you. It might have been a vote of confidence in the importance of our mission. Please know that your support has ensured the gift of time to children and their families when they face life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses. A Prom to Remember On May 15th, the red carpet at George Mark Children’s House was rolled out—literally—for 25 teens, young adults and family members to celebrate a very special prom. Island magic infused the entire House. The Great Room was transformed with the vibrant colors of the Caribbean and fresh flowers. Everyone was crowned a Prom King or Queen and did a royal turn around the circle in a Bentley. Corsages, tuxedos and party dresses abounded. The evening’s festivities also included dinner, and of course, plenty of music and dancing. These special children, their families, and siblings of children who have died celebrated an evening to remember.
