– THIS YEAR’S POTE’S PIN & MOTTO

SCIMITAR February/March 2011
It was a great honor and privilege to present
a plaque to RW Deputy Grand Master Leon
Knudsen distinguishing him as Recorder
Emeritus for his ten years of service as
Recorder of the Rhode Island Shrine. Lady Jan
and I wish Leon and Helen the best of luck as he
prepares to become Most Worshipful Grand
Master of the State of Rhode Island.
Greetings Nobles and Ladies,
By the time this issue of the Scimitar reaches
you, we will have already held our annual meeting
and also our Installation Banquet. The annual
meeting went very well with over 60 Nobles in
attendance. Our officers were elected, including
our new Recorder, PP Frank DiMascio. I look
forward to working with Frank this year. He has
the experience of serving as Potentate in 2008 and
2010 and has already been a big help to me. I am
counting on him to keep me in line.
Illustrious Andrew Hencler
My appointment for 2011 is Domenic DiStefano who is one of our
hardest working Shriners. Domenic and his Lady Keri Lyn are a
welcome addition to our line of officers. On January 7th of this
year, Domenic was installed as Master of Jenks Lodge, and I offer him
my sincerest congratulations and best wishes for a successful year
as Master.
There are so many people I want to thank for
making the night such a success. Hillary and Pat
did a wonderful job. Bob Stark and his staff
served a delicious meal which was enjoyed by
all. I'd like to thank my Chief Aide, Bryan
Martin and also my Personal Aides, Tom
Holton and Joe Andrade, for all their help and
assistance. And of course, Jim Rapson, for
serving as my Master of Ceremonies and doing
such a splendid job as always.
2011 is going to be a very busy and exciting
year. In this issue, you will see an overview of our planned events
and activities. Please try to come out and support the Rhode Island
Shrine. I guarantee you will have a good time, meet some new people, and make some new memories. As you know, the slogan on my
pin this year is “Making Memories While Helping Kids Smile”.
2011 is a new year to make new memories, and at the same time
we have the opportunity to make kids smile. Lady Jan and I invite
you all to be part of our memories.
Fraternally,
The Installation Banquet will be a night that Lady Jan and I will
always remember. One of the happiest moments of the night was to
see our Chief Rabban David Nelson and Lady Donna escorted in.
David received a well-earned standing ovation and brought tears to
the eyes of many a Noble and Lady . . . including Jan and myself. It
meant so much to have them there to share in our special night.
Please continue to keep David and Donna in your prayers.

I also want to congratulate Robert Correia for being selected as
Shriner of the Year for the second time. He is a hard worker and
always willing to lend a hand. I would once again like to thank Past
Potentate Joseph Wilkinson for appointing me in line and giving me
the opportunity to serve as Potentate of the Rhode Island Shriners.

Also in attendance were our three wonderful children, family
members, and close friends who have been there for us and supported us as we moved up through the line.

Every year our “award-winning” Scimitar newspaper offers
the special introduction of our
newly elected Chief Executive
Officer and Potentate for the
Rhode Island Shriners. This year
of 2011 we proudly offer the
February/March issue to pay
tribute to our newly elected,
123rd Potentate of the Rhode
Island Shriners, Illustrious Sir
Andrew Hencler. Illustrious Andy,
(also known as “Bogie the Clown”)
along with his proud and noble
staff of elected and appointed
officers will lead our great
Fraternity throughout the year,
bringing camaraderie, fun, prosperity and most importantly our
undying creed to provide the very
best of medical care to children
when-ever and wherever possible.
In this issue of the Scimitar,
Illustrious Andy is proud to offer
his personal profile and introduce
you to his immediate family.
Thanks to the expertise from our
Rhode Island Shriners photographer, Noble Joe Neto, we also
shine the light on our newly
elected Divan of Officers and their
Ladies along with Andy's personal
Aides that will assist our Potentate at many functions and help to
lighten his workload.

Along with the celebration of
our new Potentate, the Rhode
Island Shriners parade and working units also go through a change
of management with newly elected leaders and staff. If you have
not been to a Unit meeting for
some time, why not come out and
extend your support and congratulations to the new Nobles in
charge! The Rhode Island Shriners
parade and working units play a
powerful role in helping to keep
our Shrine Fraternity running
smooth and on the right track.
One of the BIG changes that
has taken place this year is the
newly elected Recorder. In case
you're not aware, Noble Leon
Knudsen, who held the office of
Recorder for the past ten years,
has stepped down from his position to prepare for his next and
BIGGER position as the soon to be
Grand Master of Masons for the
State of Rhode Island. The race
was tight, but our Past Potentate,
Sir Frank DiMascio, is now our
Recorder. Make no mistake about
it, this is a very important and
time-consuming job, and most
Nobles will agree that Noble
Leon Knudsen has done an
outstanding job.
There are some exciting events
coming your way this year, and
you certainly don't want to miss
the Potentate's Reception Weekend planned for the second
weekend in April. From the best
Steak Fry in town offered by the
Rhode Island Shriners Artisans
Unit, the spectacular dinner and
dancing celebration at Rhodes-onthe-Pawtuxet and all the little
surprises inbetween, you will be
delighted. Check out all the
particulars for this event along
with your personal registration
form in this issue of the Scimitar.
Come join in the fun!
The Rhode Island Shriners

source of the most up-to-date and
fresh news and serving as a onestop shopping guide for all your
personal and business requirements.
Now sit back, relax and enjoy
all of the great stories, articles
and information that we've made
available to you at your fingertips.

SCIMITAR February/March 2011
DIRECTOR’S
STAFF
Dear Nobles, Ladies, and Friends,
It's hard to believe we have
started another Shrine year. The
2010 year was truly a bittersweet
12-month period as we were
constantly reminded of the loss of
our beloved friend and Brother,
John Mello. One could sense
John's presence at every event,
and I'm sure many of us wondered
more than once about what might
have been.
Despite that terrible loss, the
Rhode Island Shrine still experienced a successful year and
that was do, in no small part,
to Ill. Frank DiMascio. Sparkey
picked up the baton and led us
through John's year. In the
process, he was able to ensure
that Jeanne Mello stayed involved
in the events she and John had
planned. I “imagine” John is looking down on the RI Shrine with a
sense of pride and gratitude.
As our Chief Rabban David
Nelson combats serious illness,
Assistant Rabban Andy Hencler,
has graciously agreed to leap frog
David and serve as Potentate in
2011. It is imperative that we all do
our best to assist both of these
Report by Steve McGuire
men in the coming months. We
must all be there to support Dave
and Donna with anything they
may need . . . be it our prayers, an
attentive ear, or a bowl of chicken
soup.
Meanwhile, I'm sure Andy will
undoubtedly do a wonderful job
as Potentate. He and Janet are
equally deserving of any and all
the help we can give them. These
men and women have worked
hard for us and our Shrine, and as
their friends, we need to show our
appreciation by being as supportive as we can.
The 2011 year brings about
another, somewhat unusual,
change. We're used to getting a
new Illustrious Potentate every
January. Each year the members
of the Divan move up a step on
the ladder towards Potentate.
However, this year we also have a
new Recorder. I've been a Shriner
for ten years and, unless I'm mistaken, Leon C. Knudsen has been
the Recorder all that time. I don't
know exactly when Leon was
elected Recorder, but I do know
he's done an outstanding job in
that capacity. He leaves an
extremely large pair of shoes to fill
as he moves on to his next chal-
lenge: Most Worshipful Grand
Master. Well done, Leon!!!
Replacing Leon will be none
other than Ill. Frank DiMascio.
Once again, Sparkey steps up to
the plate when there's work to be
done. As I stated above, 2011 will
be a great year for the Rhode
Island Shrine.
The 2011 Officers for the
Director's Staff will be as follows:
President
Ronald Slocum
Vice President
Scott Slocum
Treasurer
Robert Correia
Secretary
Robert Chase Jr.
In addition to these officers,
I am appointing the following
Brothers to be Assistant Directors:
Bob Correia
Cliff Fish
Norm Ouellette
Jerry Plemmons
Lastly, but by no means least,
I'll use this opportunity to
announce the First Annual
This event will be held on
Friday, May 20th in the Imperial
Room. You'll find a brief notice
announcing this elsewhere in this
edition of the Scimitar. This meal
will feature grilled swordfish, and I
guarantee it will be found to be a
great meal at a great price. As I
said above, I've been a Shriner for
ten years. In that time, the
Director's Staff has not used the
Imperial Room for a unit fundraiser. The last fundraisers we
sponsored were Shrimp Appeals
held in the Scottish Rite building.
This promises to be an annual
event that everyone will look
forward to with the anticipation
currently reserved for the Artisan's Steak Fry and the Legion's
Spaghetti Dinner. We need your
help to make it a success!
As usual, anyone wishing to
contact me with any issues or
questions should do so without
hesitation. My home phone number is 401-884-5266 and my e-mail
address is [email protected].
Yours in the Faith,

A Black Belt With Fierce
Determination
Sheila Radziewicz wasn't expected to live more than a few days,
let alone learn to walk, and talk . . . and now this! She gives credit to
Shriners Hospitals for Children® – the place that gave her a
fighting chance.
Right from the start, Sheila Radziewicz was a miracle baby. The
girl born 32 years ago with a genetic disorder – without arms or
kneecaps – wasn't supposed to live more than a few days, or walk, or
talk. And, she most definitely wasn't expected to earn a black belt in
taekwondo either, but Radziewicz has achieved all that and much,
much more.
Radziewicz smiles often and easily. It is part of her charm and her
engaging way of putting others at ease with her disability. She is used
to the stares she sometimes gets, but she has also become adept at
making those around her feel comfortable. She was born with TAR
syndrome, a congenital birth defect. She is profoundly grateful she
ended up in the care of Dr. Leon Krueger at Shriners Hospitals for
Children in Springfield, MA. "Dr. Kreuger said 'I will be sure your
daughter will walk someday.' I think I was three when my baby book
says I took my first steps holding my daddy's hand. I was always told
that nothing is impossible. Impossible just takes a little longer.''

By the time she was nine, she had had ten major surgeries at
Shriners to correct her inward rotated ankles and move her hamstrings to shore up legs that buckled frequently for lack of kneecaps.
"I was a happy child, but some of it was a defense mechanism. When
people made fun of me, I'd smile or walk away because I thought if
you don't acknowledge it, they're more likely to stop."
The youngest of three girls growing up in Malden, MA, her parents
Mary, a stay-at-home mom, and John, a computer technician, sought
to have her life be as normal as possible. She enrolled in roller skating lessons but hated it. She took up horseback riding and accidentally sent her horse into a cantor over a jump. "It was exhilarating and
scary all at once," she recalls. She played soccer in elementary and
junior high school but gave it up by high school. "At the high school
level, it was too intense for me.”
She always attempted to have others see her – and others with
disabilities – as normal too. While still in college, she worked at a
Girls, Inc. program in Lynn, MA, as a counselor where she helped
implement a disability awareness program, teaching 90 percent of
the girls enrolled there sign language.
"When I worked there, there was one girl who was six and who
cried when I met her for the first time. Three years later, she clung to
me and cried when I was leaving. This was the same child who saw
me, freaked out, cried and ran the other way when she first met me,"
says Radziewicz.

TIDBITS, TIDBITS,
AND MORE TIDBITS . . .
New Pote – Congratulations to
Illustrious Andy 'Bogie' Hencler
on surviving his first month as
Potentate. It’s one down and
eleven to go!
Artisans on the Rise – Congratulations to Dave Nelson on his
election to Chief Rabban, Bob
O'Brien on his election to Assistant
Rabban and Glenn Medieros on a
his appointment to 1st Ceremonial
Master. As you continue to
progress in the Divan, always
remember your true loyalty is to
the Artisans.
All Units (should be All Shriners)
Holiday Party – If you missed this
event, shame on you because
everyone had a great time. The
turkey with all the fixings was delicious, and the Ladies gift was
very nice. Joe Andrade carved the
turkey at our table as though he
knew what he was doing.
Who am I? – I have never been
Chief. Sometimes you see me and
sometimes you don't, but I'm not
hard to miss. My humor can be
dry, but it is definitely funny.
I enjoy the parades and most especially the sidelines. Cruising is
great, and once in a while a pedicure is nice.
Last Scimitar Issue: Who am I? –
Bob St. Jean
Viagra – A Clown informed us at
the Shrine Annual Meeting that he
takes the miracle pill so he doesn't
wee wee on his shoes. His name
will remain anonymous because I
do not want to get in trouble with
Grand Lodge.
Game Dinner – As always, the
annual event was a huge success
thanks to the efforts of the
Artisans and especially Glenn
Medeiros and Bob O'Brien.
Practice Makes Perfect – It always
helps to review it before you have
to do it at a meeting.
February Unit Meeting – Why not
join our new Chief on February
24th and find out what is going on!
The success of the unit is due to
the participation and support of
ALL our members!!!
Cape Get Away Weekend – Will
this year's event be the best one
ever? No doubt everyone will have
a great time. Hopefully the Ladies
will behave. I doubt it will be based
on prior year happenings, such as
jello shots, whipped cream and
pole dancing.
Liaison Officer – Deepest sympathy
to James Ogilvie on his assignment
to our Unit. Remember, you are
here to serve us!
Did You Know . . . – There are days
in the months of February and
March named in honor of our
fellow Artisans? Here’s the list!

many children need our help.

The Recorder Reports . . .
Nobles, Ladies, and Friends
of the Rhode Island Shriners,
Welcome to a new issue of the
Scimitar. Hopefully everyone had
a great New Year and holiday season.
First, I would like to thank all
the Nobles for electing me to the
position of Recorder of the Rhode
Island Shrine. It is an important
position, and I vow to do my best
to perform the tasks associated
with the position. A big heartfelt thank you goes to Ill. Leon
Knudsen for a job well done as
Recorder for the past ten years. It
will be difficult to fill his shoes,
but I will give it my best!
Nobles and friends . . . this
year, January 28 marked the 125th
anniversary of the Rhode Island
Shrine. On January 28, 1886,
Rhode Island was granted its
charter from Imperial to operate
as a Shrine Center. We have many
things to be proud of. Many
accomplishments were achieved
which are still in existence today
in the form of our charitable contributions helping children in our
State with medical needs and
allowing them to live better lives
and have more fun with special
equipment to make their childhood more enjoyable.
On January 28, 1886, Deputy
for Rhode Island Clarence B.
Mason was given permission to
form the Palestine Temple in
Newport, Rhode Island where it
thrived for three years before
moving to Providence.
Ill. Clarence Mason served as
Potentate from January 28, 1886
to December 5, 1888 when Noble
John Waters was elected Potentate. On June 24, 1889, the 34th
meeting of Palestine Temple was
first held in Freemasons Hall in
Providence. The first two meetings held in Providence created
a total of 113 new Nobles.
We have a rich history in our
Shrine Center, and we need to
move forward making more of this
history so that the next 125 years
reflect the same dedication and
commitment for the betterment of
Shrinedom.
Please read the Scimitar, support your Units and Shrine Center,
and participate in the events and
functions!
Fraternally,

A Noble’s Thank You
10-Years of Service was Well Done, Leon!
I would like to let a past potentate know just how much he has done
for the Rhode Island Shrine. If you were at the meeting on Wednesday,
December 8, 2010, you would have heard a little bit about how much
this individual will be missed and wish him well on his future in Masonry
as he continues to go to the East. If elected, he will be our leader as
Grand Master. I have not been in the Shrine for a long period of time, but
this Noble about whom I talk has dedicated his life to the Shrine and to
Masonry as well as to being a good husband and father.
We in the Shrine should be very grateful for what this Noble has done
for the craft and let him know that we all wish him the very best in his
travels. When you come in contact with Leon Knudsen, don't just shake
his hand . . . let him know how you feel about the job he did and how far
he brought the Rhode Island Shriners during his term. He has stepped out
of office as our Recorder and now continues his travel to the East.
PLEASE . . . take a moment and say thank you for what he has done
for the Shrine. Leon has gone the extra mile for the craft and the Shrine.
A lot of hard work was done by this dedicated man that none of us will
ever know. He will be missed in this position.
His replacement has a big pair of shoes to fill, and we all as Nobles
should wish Frank DiMascio well and give him our support just as we
did for Leon.
Again, Leon . . . I offer my heartfelt thank you for being you and for
the great leadership that you gave us in the past ten years. It was a job
well done!

Cinderella’s Christmas Story
by Noble Wayne Edward Sutton, Rhode Island Shriners Public Relations Chairman
For over 23 years the Rhode
Island Shriners have been bringing joy and happiness to less
fortunate and special needs children throughout Rhode Island
with our Annual Children's
Christmas Campaign. From gifts,
financial assistance, and entertainment, the Shriners continue
to be a great helping hand during the holiday season.
In addition to the great help
that we provide, we also work
hand-in-hand with the Kaleidoscope Children's Theatre, a nonprofit grass roots organization
located in the heart of Cranston,
Rhode Island. Do you remember
the fairytale about Cinderella?
Well, nobody can tell that story
better than the performers and
directors from Kaleidoscope
Children's Theatre. And this is
where the Rhode Island Shriners
come in to the story.
Every year, we continue to
make it possible for hundreds of
young children and chaperones
from local childcare, pre-school,
elementary, and boys and girls
organizations to enjoy this spectacular event.
The Rhode Island Shriners
proudly host this event and
reserved free seating at the
Scottish Rite Auditorium right
across the street from the
Shriners Center in Pawtuxet
Village. Every year we work

An overflow audience of young children from Rhode Island were the invited guests of the Rhode Island Shriners
to see a performance of Cinderella’s Christmas Story. The Kaleidoscope Theatre performers were able
to bring wonderful smiles to the faces of the children in attendance.
hard to make it possible for
more children to share in this
Christmas show event as our
guests, and once again we filled
the auditorium to overflow!
Just before the show got
started, I invited our very reliable and expert photographer,
Noble Joe Neto, to join our
Illustrious Potentate, Frank
DiMascio, at the entrance so
that he could capture the look
of excitement on the face of the
children and adults as they
made there way into the show
after making a short bus trip to
the auditorium.
Our Illustrious Potentate
Frank DiMascio was honored to
tell children about the many
things Shriners do and why we
like to see children smile.
Carrying the pride and honor of
every member of the Rhode
Island Shriners, Sir Frank shared
our creed to help improve the
quality of life for our precious
young children here in Rhode
Island and around the world.
Interested in bringing a group
of children to this annual event?
Call our public relations chairman
at 461-0690, and we'll do our best
to make it happen.
Once again, the show went
off without a hitch, and the children, classroom teachers, and
chaperones really enjoyed
themselves with rave reviews.
This is one of the many gifts that
the Rhode Island Shriners offer
during the holiday season.
Special thanks to the folks
from Kaleidoscope Theatre and
their great cast of entertainers

without you.

It was my honor, along with
44 of my peers, to visit Shriners
Hospitals for Children® - Boston
this past fall, on October 21,
2010. Derek Corbett and William
Seward, members of the Cairo
Temple in Rutland, Vermont, not
only sponsored our amazing
field trip, but also gave us a truly
inspirational and informative
tour of the hospital and the

and full of so many wonderful
people.”
I can honestly say that the
trip had a phenomenal impact,
and students continue to talk
about their impressions. We
commend the Shriners for all
that they do. One student commented, “I was really impressed
by the dedication of the Shriners
and staff we met at the hospital.
It was inspirational to see a facility honestly driven by patient
care and so proud of what they
do. The Shriners Hospital is
truly an example of what health
care today can and should be.”
I just wanted to send you
a note of our appreciation for
Shriners Hospitals for Children®, and a very special and
grateful thank you to Derek
Corbett and William Seward for
making the trip possible. It
enhanced our learning and gave
us a fresh perspective – truly a
highlight to our school year. As
future nurses, we look forward
to making a difference like the
Shriners and Shriners Hospitals
for Children® make every day
in the lives of so many.
Another student wrote, “The
trip to Shriners Hospital was
amazing. I have always admired
the work the Shriners do, but
this trip enhanced my appreciation. The hospital is wonderful
We were all very much
inspired by what the Shriners
are doing to change the health
care system and how their
dedication and support changes
the lives of so many children.
We were honored to learn about
the organization's mission and
eager to be part of the journey.

Rhode Island Shriners
Bring the Joy of Christmas to Children
709 Harris Avenue
Providence
Rhode Island
by Noble Wayne Sutton, Rhode Island Shriners Public Relations Chairman
and with the help of my dear
friend and Past Potentate
Gordon Martin, we finished the
last stops for Santa.
Santa and the Rhode Island
Shriners are proud to have
helped bring some Christmas
spirit to our less fortunate children and young adults here in
Rhode Island.
Santa's Helper, Noble Gordon Martin PP,
with Washington Park Community Shelter Director, Frances Murphy.
Once again we gassed up the
sleigh (actually the Shriners
Hospital transportation van),
filled it with toys and ventured
out with a special delivery of
toys and gifts for children and
young adults throughout Rhode
Island. The reindeer were hungry and Santa was low on gas, so
we made our final two stops at
the Washington Park Community
Shelter in Providence and the
Cranston Community Action
Program. Both are non-profit
Rhode Island organizations that
offer a safe and educational
place for children, young adults
and their families who may find
themselves in a less fortunate or
difficult time in their lives with
all of the necessary tools and
education to allow them to
stand up on their own and try to
start a new life.
Santa asked us if I we would
give him a helping hand. After all
he had been working around the
clock for days, so we took the
final bag of toys from his sleigh
We wish the Washington Park
Community Shelter, Cranston
Community Action Program and
all the many worthwhile organizations that help to improve the
quality of life for children and
young adults throughout Rhode
Island all the very best of hope
for a brighter future.

SCIMITAR February/March 2011
Black Belt, continued from page 5
After getting her undergraduate degree in government at
Suffolk University in Boston, she
began graduate school in criminal justice at Northern Arizona
University. She was living in
Flagstaff when she happened
upon a flyer for a martial arts
school and saw it as a way to
both stay fit and relieve the
stress of studying while working
full-time. The school she found
in Flagstaff was accepting of her
and her disability.
“The instructor was just really nice, and the atmosphere was
low-key. My instructor was always on the ground with his
hands behind his back trying to
figure out how to do it without
hands," she says.
When she returned to the
Boston area after graduation,
she found a job as a legal advocate coordinator for a domestic
violence organization. She also
searched for another martial
arts school where she could
continue to develop her skills.
She happened upon Bruce
McCorry's Martial Arts in
Peabody, MA.
"She called and said she had
no arms. I booked an appointment with her and she trotted
in, held out her arm, we shook
hands and she went right into

class. There she is just like
anyone else," says Sandra
LaRosa, a co-owner. “The thing
that stands out about Sheila is
her personality, her positive attitude. The moment she came
through the door, her confidence was obvious."
Not all of it has been easy for
Radzciewiz. "Weapons are a little bit of challenge. I was excited
to work with nunchucks, and I
wore a helmet for awhile
because I kept beating myself
on the head," says Radzciewicz,
chuckling.
Radziewicz has been a dedicated student, taking two classes a week and also volunteering
to work with children. "She's a
very hard working girl. When
she sets her mind to do something she goes and does it. She's
a warrior at life," says McCorry.
The latest test of her ability,
focus, perseverance and will
was the black belt test she took
along with nine other students
which required a series of forms,
punches, kicks and on her first
try, broke three one-inch thick
boards with a roundhouse kick
and another board with a fist
punch, among other feats. She
was one of two students who
earned a black belt. "It's not just
punches and kicking,” says
Radziewicz. "It's mind, body, and
spirit, and it's about respect,
discipline, and self-esteem and
being there for others. It's a
way of life."

Cremation . . .
All funeral homes offer it, but
we offer it on-site. How does that
benefit you and your family?
Today you will find that most all funeral homes can
offer you “cremation services,” but we are one of
a select few who can offer your family the peace of
mind found with on-site cremation. Other funeral
homes will outsource your loved one to another
location for cremation. Having our own crematory
on-site is our way to guarantee that your loved one
will never leave our care. We are here for you and
your family from your first phone call and throughout your grief journey.
