A Word from the South East Chair…
So sorry to have missed this year inaugural joint Wow / Sports
day! I’d looked forward to it for weeks but sometimes even
HASSRA has to play second fiddle – my mantra has always been
Family / HASSRA / Work - always in that order - and on this
occasion my 95-year old mother had first call on my time. Never
mind, next year’s will be even better.
Judging from all the feedback I’ve seen, it was a great day; some
fine tuning needed maybe, but it was still a tremendous effort by
all of those who helped organise the day. Glad to hear that our
crew outshone their London counterparts and I gather that those
London organisers who did well were all ex- HASSRA South
anyway! No surprise there – we are lucky to have such a great
bunch of willing volunteers who always pull out all the stops for
the enjoyment of others.
Have a good summer. I’m shortly off to Iceland – no, not the food
store -where it promises to be wet and cold. Great.

Pétanque
According to a document in the Musée
Ciotaden, pétanque in its present form was
first played in 1910 in the town of La Ciotat
near Marseilles.
It was invented by Ernest Pitiot, a local café
owner, to accommodate a French boules
player named Jules Lenoir, whose
rheumatism prevented him from running
before he threw the ball. In the new game,
the length of the pitch or field was reduced
by roughly half, and a player no longer
engaged in a run-up while throwing a ball.

HASSRA SPORTS DAY
The weather was good and the atmosphere great - this was HASSRA's Sports Day and
the London Committee of the Charity for Civil Servants were invited to run a raffle - as
they have for the last four years.
One of the committee had only been out of hospital for five days and another had begged
for the day off from his manager. This was because HASSRA's Sports Day is such a joy
to be at; the people are great and very generous. Also, during the day, advertising is
given to the Charity. This helped enormously this year.
The total amount raised was £301 for the raffle and £67 for the target golf. The first prize
(donated by HASSRA) a £30 voucher to spend on champagne, was very happily
received, as was all of the other prizes.
This money goes towards helping working and retired civil servants who have fallen on
hard times and, because the CS is shrinking, more money is needed to be raised to cover
those that have left.
We would like to thank James and his team for not only inviting the London Region but for
all their help and assistance during the day.
