As the Sunoco Daytona Challenge is aimed at pro-drivers we felt that it was time to add another challenge – the Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge, aimed at the amateur racer with the ultimate prize a race in the GRAND-AM 200 miles race in an V8 powered Camaro on the Friday before the big race. Immediately 100 racers signed up and fought throughout the 2011 season but it was Aaron Steele in MSV F3 Cup that scored an amazing 113 average points who clinched the prize. Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK AAOIL 3 Sunoco Daytona Challenge Sunoco Daytona Challenge 2011 saw the challenge enter its third year and another driver win the chance of a lifetime! Sunoco Daytona Challenge Now in its third year the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge is well established as one of the most talked about prizes in the paddock. Participating series for 2011 were the Cooper Tires British F3 International Series, Avon Tyres British GT Championship and the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship, with 90 registered racers competing across the three series. The drivers scored points ranging from 100pts for first place down to 5pts for tenth place with 20pts for pole and fastest lap. The prize, arguably the largest value prize in UK motorsport, is a race seat in a Daytona Prototype at the 2012 Rolex 24 At Daytona. The challenge was put in place between Sunoco and GRANDAM to help expands GRAND-AM’s international exposure and give an exceptional opportunity for a European driver to promote an international career. The winner of the inaugural year of the challenge Derek Johnson raced the number 77 McDonalds DP car to tenth place in the 2010 Rolex 24 and has proved himself to be an excellent ambassador for the event. Ross Kaiser won the 2011 challenge after a closely fought battle with British Formula 3 driver Jean-Eric Vergne. Ross went on to race in the 2011 Rolex 24 with the Doran Racing team. The inaugural challenge saw the 2009 British Formula 3 Champion, Daniel Ricciardo, miss out on the Daytona drive by just 2 points and the 2010 British Formula 3 Champion, Jean-Eric Vergne, as runner up by just over 10 points. However, in 2011 the Cooper Tires Formula 3 Champion, Felipe Nasr, became the first Formula 3 racer to win the Sunoco Daytona Challenge, which in 2012 will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. From the first British F3 round at Monza where he took two race wins, Carlin racer Felipe Nasr has shown an extraordinary level of driving. Nasr was consistent throughout the season leading to winning the British Formula 3 title – with 2 rounds still left to go. Nasr went into his penultimate race at Donington needing just 12 points to extend his average point score enough to win the Sunoco Daytona Challenge. With 20 points up for grabs for qualifying on pole Felipe knew what he had to do! It was a very close qualifying session with Racing Steps Foundation driver Jack Harvey fighting hard for the top spot but Felipe bounced back and went faster by 0.064 seconds. The closest contenders to Felipe were Javier Morcillo in Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship and Marcus Clutton in British GT class 4. The Britcar 24hr at Silverstone was the last chance for Challenge contender Javier Morcillo to improve his overall standings in the Challenge. Javier had teamed up with experienced Calum Lockie, Paul White and fellow Spaniard Manuel Cintrano for a joint effort in team Strata 21’s Mosler. Unfortunately the car suffered from gearbox trouble and had to retire from the race – despite this Javier still finished in the top 3 in the final challenge standings. Marcus Clutton had a great final race winning the GT4 class championship title along with team-mate Peter Belshaw. The ABG Motorsport pair finished second in class in the race, behind Lotus duo Chris Holmes and Phil Glew, but the point score was enough to give them victory and put Marcus second overall in the challenge standings. Felipe Nasr is originally from Brazil but whilst racing lives in Woking. Despite only having 4 years car racing experience Nasr has an impressive racing CV; starting in Formula BMW where he Participating series* for the 2012 season competed for 2 years until moving up into the British Formula 3. Felipe finished 5th overall in the British F3 last year and this year was back to take the title – claiming the championship win with 2 rounds to go and a lead of 123 points. Felipe will be racing in the 2012 Rolex 24 At Daytona with Michael Shank Racing in their Daytona Prototype. Based in Columbus, Ohio, Michael Shank Racing (MSR) was formed in 1989 when Michael Shank first began driving racing cars professionally. Shank retired from the cockpit in 1997 to focus his efforts on running the team. MSR joined the Rolex Series in 2004 and scored a debut Rolex Series win in 2006. Since its inception the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona has been extremely well received by eligible racers in the top-flight Sunocofuelled Championships. Since 2009, 290 European racers have fought long and hard to win the Sunoco Daytona Challenge. To give more racers the opportunity to race at Daytona, we launched the Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 in 2011 where the ultimate prize is a race-seat in the Continental Series GS class in the GRANDAM 200 race at the same race weekend as the Rolex 24. As the name implies this is a 200 mile race and driver changes are compulsory. The race is being held on the Friday before the Rolex 24 so it comes with all the razzmatazz of the Rolex race. Included in the prize is travel, hotel and the cost of the seat so the only thing that the winner has to do is to bring his helmet and overall. The winner will gain the full American experience and be racing in an American muscle car such as a V8 powered Chevrolet Camaro. The points are awarded exactly as per the Sunoco Daytona Challenge meaning that the racer gets points for pole position, fastest lap and race result. Due to the different number of races per series in a year all points are divided by the number of races in the year in the respective series to create a fair average point per race score. 100 racers registered for the inaugural 2012 Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge from the 6 eligible championships: Britcar Dunlop Production GTN Championship, MSV F3 Cup, Legends, MINI Challenge, Dunlop Production Touring Car Championship and the GT Cup Championship. The season has been closely contended throughout but it was F3 Cup driver Aaron Steele who drove away with the prize with an amazing average score of 113 points per race. Steele went into his penultimate race weekend needing 58 points to win the Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge. After scoring 20 points for pole Aaron needed to finish fourth or higher in the first race to take the challenge – this may have been a hard task for some racers but after a fantastic season Aaron knew the challenge win was in his sights if he carried on with the same consistency he had shown before. Steele took the chequered flag in first and the 100 points on offer towards the challenge – his 11th win of the season. Aaron’s closest challenger throughout has been Adrian Churchill from the Dunlop Production Touring Cars who finished second in the overall standings with 93 average points. Adrian had a great season and was once leading the challenge but unfortunately due to a few DNF’s Churchill lowered his point score giving Aaron the chance to extend his lead. MINI Challenge racer Chris Knox also had a great season and finished third in the overall standings with 77.63 points. It was the third round of the championship which saw Chris Knox become a challenger to watch. Knox took 3 race wins, pole position and 2 fastest laps moving up 41 places from 49th to 8th. The Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge is set to continue for the foreseeable future – giving promising drivers a perfect platform for a professional racing career. If the 2012 Challenge was anything to go by then the 2013 Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge will be an even bigger event! As F3 runs to FIA regulations it was the high quality, oxygenated Sunoco CF which was the obvious choice. As control fuel suppliers we support the series by being on site across the whole race weekend delivering fuel to each competitor and collecting any empties after the meeting has finished. We also test fuel samples on site using FTIR infra red spectometer equipment. The British Formula 3 competitors are eligible for the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge which this year was won by the British Formula 3 champion Felipe Nasr. Promoted by the Stephane Ratel Organisation (SRO), the Cooper Tires British F3 International Series is arguably the leading F3 single-seater series in the world and as such an important stepping-stone into Formula One. Young drivers come from all over the world to race in British F3 and compete against the finest young racing drivers of our generation. Win in British F3 and you are marked as a driver to watch. Around the world, no other race series has produced as many future Grand Prix winners and World Champions. Since its inception in 1964, British F3 has provided more graduates to Formula 1 than any other single-seater series worldwide. The list of former British F3 Champions who have gone on to become Grand Prix greats includes Ayrton Senna, Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Gunnar Nilsson, Nelson Piquet, Derek Warwick, Stefan Johansson, Johnny Herbert, JJ Lehto, Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. 8 Latest due to join F1 is British F3 Champions Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne who will be racing for Toro Rosso in 2012. However, it is not just in Formula 1 that former British F3 drivers excel. The Roll of Honor includes the names of drivers who have gone on to win in IndyCar, GP2 and at Le Mans. With new cars and great circuits 2012 is set to be a thrilling year for British Formula 3. The season will be spread over 10 events with three races at each, with the exception of the Pau meeting, and will take in the Grand Prix circuits of Monza in Italy, Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and Silverstone, as well as all of Britain’s leading tracks. Regulation changes aimed at improving the show include the allocation of full points for the second race of the three-race weekend – previously the 20-minute race two offered only half points. Race one will continue to be a 30-minute event and race three, the feature race, a 40-minute endurance event. The only exception to the threerace format will be the Grand Prix de Pau, at which there will be a 30-minute and a 40-minute double-header. British GT As with British F3 the Avon Tyres British GT Championship also use Sunoco CF as their control fuel. Competitors are also eligible for the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge. The British GT Championship is also promoted by SRO and showcases the most prestigious and stylish sportscar grid of any national motorsport championship. There are 3 classes which make up the British GT championship: GT3 Closely reflecting their road-going equivalents to keep maintenance costs to a minimum, GT3 specification racecars allow limited alterations to suspension, engine and bodywork. The class includes such cars as Ferrari 458 and Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Aston Martin DBRS9, Porsche Cup S GT3, Audi R8, Corvette and Mercedes SLS. GT4 The GT4 category amalgamates GT4-homologated cars and Supersport-type machines. The former category provides the exciting cars which form the mainstay of the GT4 European Cup; like the Lotus Evora GT4, Nissan 370Z, BMW M3, Aston Martin N24, and Ginetta G50- while the latter division encompasses such exotica as the KTM XBOW and Lotus 2-Eleven. GTC This class is generally made of one make championship cars, such as the Porsche Cup and the Ferrari Challenge, regulated by power to weight ratio. Changes of bodywork material and sizes may be granted, for example rear wings may be fitted, subject to the eligibility scrutineer’s approval. The 2011 British GT championship was won by CRS racing duo Jim and Glynn Geddie in their Ferrari 458. In GT4 the champion was won by runner up in the Sunoco Daytona Challenge Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK Marcus Clutton and his team mate Peter Belshaw with their ABG Motorsport run KTM. In GTC Jordan Witt and Anthony Reid took the championship win in their Chevron Racing GR8. 2012 is looking to be even bigger with a seven-meeting calendar featuring the UK’s best circuits and a repeat of the successful mix of one, two and three-hour races are planned by the SRO Motorsports Group for next season’s Avon Tyres British GT Championship. British GT will once again visit Oulton Park, Rockingham, Snetterton and the Grand Prix circuits of Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Donington Park. Next year’s overseas round will take place on the German Grand Prix circuit at the Nurburgring. AAOIL 9 Britcar Britcar Endurance Motorspor t With bumper grids and races ranging from 2 to 24 hours Britcar has well established itself on the racing calendar as the premier series for endurance racing. Anglo American Oil Company provide a control fuel service to both the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship and the Britcar Dunlop Production GTN Championship, we also service the Britcar 24hrs at Silverstone. Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship The Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship caters for out and out GT cars from Le Mans levels of performance such as Porsche 911 RSR’s and Ferrari GT2’s down to GT4 cars such as Aston Martin GT4 and Ginetta G50s. Races are a minimum of 2-3 hours in length with mandatory pit stops to allow for driver changes. The championship is usually the headline event at race meetings and has support from the Britcar family of races. The 2011 championship was action packed throughout however it was at the last race of the season, ‘Britcar-into the night’ at Brands Hatch, that saw the championship won by Aaron Scott and Craig Wilkins in their GT3 Racing Dodge Viper GT3. We support the Championship with a choice of control fuels to suite individual tune of engines. The racers running the Sunoco CF control fuel are eligible for the Sunoco Rolex 24 At 10 Daytona Challenge and are up against other racers in competitive championships for this much sought after opportunity, arguably the largest value prize in UK motorsport. Britcar 24hrs The Britcar 24hrs at Silverstone is the only 24hr race for GT and Saloon cars in the UK and is now firmly placed in the British motorsport calendar as the race to attend. With growing grid numbers from all around Europe, and with top international teams competing, the Britcar 24hrs at Silverstone is the place to be, racing twice around the clock on the circuit lauded as the ‘Home of British Motorsport’, and the British Grand Prix. In the short time it has been established, the race has attracted manufacturer-backed initiatives, to launch new models, or to celebrate existing marques, and each year top drivers from World Touring Cars, British Touring Cars and International GT racing grace the entry list. This year’s Britcar 24hrs at Silverstone saw the Eclipse Motorsport/Signia Developments Ferrari 430 take the win driven by; Sean McInerney, Michael McInerney and Phil Keen. The team finished 13 laps ahead of nearest rivals Nicholas Mee Racing and their Aston Martin GT4 who took the class 3 win. As regulations limit the amount of fuel each team can store in their garage, we continuously resupply all competitors directly to their garages, throughout the 24 hour period. To minimise environmental impact on public areas such as woodland the BRC introduced centralised refuelling to give a safe, single refuelling facility at all of its events. Using a control fuel supplied from managed refuelling rigs negated the need for the carriage of fuel to and from events by individual teams meaning a safer and cleaner public environment. As the BRC enters its 54th year, it moves to a two-wheel-drive only formula providing manufacturers, teams and competitors with a chance to achieve outright victories on the international rallies that make up this world-renowned series. Alongside the British Championship, other key Series running Sunoco control fuel will include the BRC Challenge, the national two wheel drive championship and the all new Production BRC, which will be feature just four wheel drive cars. Attracting leading teams and independent drivers from the UK, Europe and as far afield as Australia, the BRC is a proven high-profile championship with a winning formula. Its regulations and event formats provide close competition, which allows the development of vital skills and speed, in addition to generating great camaraderie between the competitors and teams. Past drivers and winners form an international roll of honour, featuring some of the greatest names in sport: Hannu Mikkola, Pentti Airikkala, Ari Vatanen and Stig Blomqvist. These are joined by British heroes such as Roger Clark, Russell Brookes, Malcolm Wilson, Jimmy and Alister McRae, Guy Wilks, Keith Cronin, Mark and David Higgins; plus former World Rally Champions including Tommi Mäkinen and the late Richard Burns and Colin McRae. 2012 Season provides three British titles in rallying, these are: • MSA British Rally Championship is for drivers and co-drivers in BRC class categories to achieve the highest accolade of the sport in Britain. The final scores will be based on the best five results from the six qualifying rounds. • MSA British Manufacturers Rally Championship provides a high profile sporting arena for registered manufacturers. Manufacturers will score points based on the two highest placed cars on each event, regardless of driver or team. All six rounds count towards the final Championship classification. • MSA British Junior Rally Championship is the platform for future rally talent and will be open to drivers who were born on or after 1st January 1989, driving Class 10 (Rally 1) cars only. The 2012 BRC will also see the running of the BRC Teams Cup is aimed at professional motorsport teams running two cars. Drivers to will be pre-nominated, but can change from event-to-event. All six rounds count towards the final Championship classification. The Championship features BRC Classes incorporate two-wheel-drive cars only, covering FIA homologated Group N vehicles up to 1600cc and 2000cc, Super 1600s, Rally 1, 2 and 3. Four-wheel-drive, Group N4 and A7 Kit variant cars are not permitted. Other major awards include a Privateers Cup and Ladies Cup. BRC Challenge The MSA British Rally Championship’s original support series, the popular BRC Challenge, returns for its ninth year in 2012. 2012 will see the BRC Challenge follow the MSA British Rally Championship in its entirety. Production BRC 2012 will see the introduction of a brand new rally series in the UK: the Production BRC. With the MSA British Rally Championship adopting a two-wheel-drive policy from 2012, the PBRC has been established to offer competitors with four-wheel-drive Group N and R4 Class cars a high-profile, well organised and competitive arena that will follow all six-rounds of the BRC. The rallies will be run on a National permit (driver and co-driver will require a National A Stage Rally Licence, the equivalent or higher) and see a competitive distance of 60 - 65 miles for the four gravel and 100 – 110 miles for the two asphalt events. The MINI Challenge prides itself on bringing new drivers to racing, from all walks of life. Be it the track day hound who needs the next challenge, the road car enthusiast, corporate karter, or aspiring 16 year old young gun, the MINI Challenge has the infra-structure to guide, look after and nurture new raced rivers. The MINI Challenge is a multi-class one make championship, designed to cater for the race novice through to career race driver and this year it celebrated its 10th anniversary providing another thrilling season long battle. In the JCW Class, which sees the latest turbo charged MINI Cooper S do battle, the title race went down to the final meeting of the year at Snetterton (15/16 October) with three drivers all in a position to claim the 2011 championship. After thrills and spills at Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Silverstone, Donington Park and Anglesey, Scotsman Chris Knox, 2010 winner Lee Allen and former champion Luke Caudle went head-to-head to fight for the crown. The battle was only decided in the penultimate race of the season when Caudle was collected by another car handing Knox the coveted title, despite finishing second behind Lee Allen. Excelr8 driver Antony Whorton-Eales proved to be the star of the Club Class, a category for cars based on the MINI Cooper. The Mini Challenge, which can be considered as a direct route to the British Touring Car Championship, is set for another entertaining year in 2012. 14 F3 Cup The F3 Cup burst on to the scene in 2011 providing a platform for both experienced racers and aspiring young drivers to showcase their skills in sophisticated F3 machinery. This year the series, which caters for F3 chassis from 1980 up to and including 2004, joined MotorSport Vision Racing’s portfolio and prospered with the F3 Cup visiting major circuits all over the United Kingdom, alongside a trip to the famous Spa Francorchamps circuit. The F3 Cup also took part in the largest ever single-seater race in the UK on the brand new Silverstone Arena GP circuit. Ex-Formula Palmer Audi and A1GP driver Aaron Steele showed his class this season as he won 14 of the 18 races, including a stunning performance at Spa, which the Kent man described as the greatest victory of his career to date. The 22-year old’s achievements were acknowledged with the honour of a FIA Formula Two test prize awarded to the most meritorious driver. He also claimed the Sunoco Grand-Am 200 Challenge, which will see him travel to America to race at the prestigious Daytona circuit in January, due to his domination of the series. The F3 Cup is set for massive expansion in 2012 with the announcement that the series has been granted outline approval for full championship status by the MSA, together with a number of ambitious regulation changes. Legends, intersteps & PTC GT Cup GT Cup is another MSVR Championship that started in November 2007. The inaugural GT Cup race meeting was hailed a huge success by the twenty five intrepid competitors who shared founder Marc Haynes vision of multi marque GT sprint racing for owner drivers. Such was the demand for more that Marc formed Bute Motorsport to run the series and with the help of MSVR put together a complete season of eight rounds over the winter for the inaugural 2008 season. Attracted by the format of having two sprint races, free practice sessions, entrant VIP hospitality, TV coverage included at every round and open only to Sportsman owner drivers, the GT Cup has remained true to it’s founding principles ever since. In 2010 the GT Cup series came of age, becoming a Championship, fully sanctioned by the MSA. In fact, the whole car is built to turn left – the driver and engine are offset to that side. In the U.K., however, they are made to turn in either direction. This means they can race at some of the top circuits in the country – Brands Hatch, Donington Park, Anglesey, Mallory Park and so on. Legends Cars are 5/8 scale racers based on pre-war Ford, Chevy and Dodge bodies. Eight body styles are produced. Legends’ racing is about entertainment. Each race is a short, sharp, generally frantic affair. Depending on the circuit length, the cars race for between 7 and 12 laps. Because of the unique grid system, the fast and notso-fast are mixed together, producing some hectic action as the quick drivers try to battle to the front. Grid positions for the Final are determined by the points scored in the heats. However, Legends like to do things differently, and the highest point’s scorers start from the BACK. The action is more frantic than normal as most of the fast drivers are at the back, all trying to fight to the front at the same time. Sunoco_UK PTC The Dunlop Production Touring Car Trophy continues to move from strength to strength, building upon its reputation after another successful season in 2011. Having first started as a series of races it is now a respected Championship in its own right, capable of attracting a healthy grid of cars and some very talented drivers. Many competitors have aspirations of competing within the British Touring Car Championship and see the Dunlop Production Touring Car Trophy as a way to achieve their ambition. As a result of this aim, in many ways the Championship tries to mirror many aspects of the BTCC in terms of the event format, which is explained further through pages on this website. Add in the 70s Celebration, catering for sports, GT and touring cars of the 1970s and there is a class for everyone to race in, from F1 machinery to the humblest Mini. 16 HSCC The HSCC was created in 1966 by a small group of enthusiasts, notably Guy Griffiths and Betty Haig. They were frustrated by a lack of races for older sports cars and wanted to stop them being modified, inappropriately, beyond their original specification or exported to the USA. The first race, at Castle Combe, was organised by Guy Griffiths, started by daughter Penny and won by Neil Corner’s Jaguar D-Type. Today the HSCC have just short of one thousand, mainly racing, members and have grown from a Club running races at other people’s meetings to become the premier organiser of historic racing in the UK. The Brands Hatch ‘Historic Superprix’ and Oulton Park ‘Gold Cup’ are two of the top meetings on the historic calendar. The ‘Autosport Three Hour’ is the UK’s longest race for historic sports cars. As each new generation of enthusiasts turns to historic racing their choice of car usually reflects the racing they watched in their youth. In the sixties HSCC ran grids of Healey Silverstones, Frazer Nash and D-Types. At today’s HSCC meetings you will continue to see fifties sports cars but they have been joined by thriving new championships. Griffiths and Haig were part of a very small group who thought historic cars should be preserved. Today, the Club is proud to have played a role in making historic racing the fastest growing part of the UK racing scene. 2011 marked two notable achievements. Membership exceeded 1000 for the first time and the club collected the club of the year award at the inaugural International Historic Motorsport Awards. Group C The Group C Racing Series recreates the great days from the Sportscar endurance racing of the 80’s when these cars raced in the World Sportscar Championship. We test fuel samples on site with our own FTIR infra red spectrometer, which produces a very accurate chemical graph of the fuel, which is compared against a reference sample. Mixing the 105RON with pump fuel will also give a very cost effective race fuel, that will offer good levels of protection for a comparatively low compression race engine. The recent trend within the rally community has been to move to controlled refuelling using mobile refueling equipment operated by a professional team, within a dedicated area. This has been driven by a number of factors, not least the desire by event organisers to limit the damaging effect on the local environment in terms of possible fuel spills and empty cans being left behind. We have been servicing the British Rally Championship since 2008 providing a range of fuels by the litre. It’s just like putting on a new carburettor without making any adjustments. If it works perfectly right out of the box, you are probably just lucky. There are two main variables that must be considered when trying a different fuel. The first and most obvious is air fuel mixture, and the second is spark timing. How do we know if the air fuel mixture for the old fuel is okay for the new fuel? If it is not okay, should it be richer or leaner? To answer these questions, we need to know the specific gravity (SG) of the fuels. Most racing fuel suppliers have this information available in their literature. SG is a measure of how heavy the fuel is compared to water. If a fuel has an SG of 0.720, this means that it is 72% of the weight of water. The higher the SG number, the higher the float sits in the gasoline. On the other hand, if we are moving from a lower SG fuel to a higher SG fuel, we need to lean the mixture. On a modern fuel injected engine, this process is achieved by remapping, but will require changes to jet sizes on carburettors. How much leaner, how much richer? If the new fuel is lighter (lower SG) than the old fuel, enrich the mixture by one jet size for every 0.010 difference in SG. This will only work if the carburettor was correctly jetted for the old fuel. On fuel injected engines an average start point is to reduce the fuelling with 1% for every 0.01 increase in SG. Example 1: The old fuel has an SG of 0.718, and the new fuel has an SG of 0.728. Since the new fuel is heavier that the old one, the mixture needs to be leaner by about one jet size. If the new gasoline had an SG of 0.738, the mixture should be leaned out by about two jet sizes. Example 2: The old fuel has an SG of 0.724, and the new one has an SG of 0.704. The new fuel is lighter than the old one, so the mixture needs to be richer by two jet sizes since the new fuel is 0.020 lighter than the old one. Likewise, fuelling has to be adjusted to compensate for the level of oxygen in the fuel. As a general rule of thumb, alter the fuelling by approximately the same percentage as the oxygen content in the fuel. The second variable that needs to be addressed is spark timing. One degree can make a difference, so don’t get too hasty and move the spark timing more than one degree at a time. Try going both ways from where you were optimised with the previous fuel to see what combination works best. The reason you should explore the spark advance area is because different fuels can burn at different rates. This is normally referred to as flame speed. For maximum power and torque, maximum cylinder pressure should occur at about 12 degrees ATDC. If there is too much spark timing, the peak pressure will occur too soon, power will be lost, and detonation is possible. If the timing is not enough, then peak pressure will occur too late in the power stroke and power will be lost. As an example we have supplied high ethanol content blends to a number of UK engine builders who have worked with US based race series and needed the same ethanol content fuel for their dyno work. With access to both ethanol and alkyate petrol, we can produce any percentage ethanol blend that might be required. This means that once an engine is tuned to run on one of our race fuels, the same performance can be expected each time. In addition, mapping (or tuning) can be made more precise resulting in more performance and cooler running temperatures. A positive side effect is cleaner emissions compared to running pump fuels.Pump fuels are designed to be as cheap as possible whilst meeting the British Standards (BS EN228 or BS 7800) They are not manufactured to the same high tolerances as racing fuels and also have seasonal variations. Shelf life The selection of chemical components used ensures that all Sunoco and R race fuels are very stable and if properly stored, do not deteriorate like regular pump fuels. The nature of pump fuels is that they are designed for rapid turnover, and will loose performance after about 30 days whereas race fuels can be stored for much longer periods. Octane values Octane on its own does not produce power. It is simply a measurement of a fuels ability to resist detonation. A higher value becomes more important if an engine has had its compression ratio raised to allow the engine to produce more power. We have fuels from 99 RON up to 119 RON to suit. Burn characteristics Our fuels are all designed with racing in mind. They are designed to be faster burning to ensure you get a complete burn at high RPM and to allow a faster increase in engine revolutions (i.e. acceleration). Race oils over road oils Modern road oils v race oils Formulations of modern road oils are dictated by the major car manufacturers. This means that they are designed to cover longer and longer service intervals, which dictates higher levels of detergents to hold combustion deposits in suspension. The amounts of anti-wear additives have been reduced as they can cause failure of lambda sensors and catalytic converters overtime. Race engines require the opposite from their oils. Race engines operating at high RPM, under high load, need a high level of antiwear additives (zinc and phosphor) to combat premature engine failures and therefore high levels of detergents, which conflict with anti-wear additives, are not needed. The correct viscosity Selecting the correct viscosity is also important. Thinner oils in engines, gearboxes and differentials drastically reduce parasitic drag, especially important in short duration races, where oils may not reach their ideal operating temperatures. This can also benefit those competitors in single make series, where any incremental gain can be of great importance. Conclusion A race car needs oils that are designed for maximum protection and power. Using properly engineered racing oils, such as Joe Gibbs race oils, enables you to run thinner oils increasing power and at the same time the high level of anti-wear additives reduces engine wear. Any fuel, including race fuel, will deteriorate, when exposed to the atmosphere. Prolonged exposure, will allow the light-end properties to escape, and as a consequence, the performance of the fuel will drop. This means that when using your drums of fuel at a circuit, they must be resealed after you have removed the quantity of fuel you need. You should not leave any kind of transfer pump standing in the drum as typically they don’t maintain an air tight seal in the drum opening. One other issue to mindful of is the increasing use of ethanol in unleaded fuels of any type. Ethanol attracts moisture and is aggressive to rubber. This means it is important to keep drums closed on damp or wet days, and if our English summer is actually sunny, fuel should not be kept in clear containers. Once a drum has been opened, the fuel will keep, but there are a few provisos. As mentioned above, the container must be kept sealed and it is best to use the containers we supply the fuel in. Our standard Tri Sure bungs have a rubber seal and can be screwed down tightly to make an air and moisture tight seal. All our fuel drums have an internal coating applied, which prevents any corrosion forming, keeping the fuel clean. The drum itself needs to be stored at a stable temperature. The key thing is not to expose the drum to extremes of temperature variation, i.e. leaving it outside in direct sunlight in summer or snow and ice in the winter. If these simple rules are followed, then the fuel, in a part drum, will easily last for months or even years (depending on type of fuel inside – call for technical advice). Transportation by sea The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code requires that fuels classified under UN 1203, MOTOR SPIRIT or GASOLINE or PETROL must be declared when being carried by sea. Unless declared, it is prohibited to carry any additional fuel, other than that which is in the fuel tank(s) of the car(s) on any ferry crossing. If undeclared fuel containers are discovered by the Ferry Company or an inspection body the ferry operator will not allow the carrier to travel unless, the fuel is disposed of outside the port area before boarding the ferry. If undeclared fuel is found, the time taken to deal with the incident could mean that the ferry crossing may be missed. The declaration of the goods must be made on a Dangerous Goods Shipping Note. The declaration must be as follows: UN1203 MOTOR SPIRIT,3,11(D/E) It is important that the person loading the vehicle signs Container/Vehicle Packing Certificate. Transportation in the UK. Transporting petrol, be it race fuel or regular pump fuel, is regulated by ADR, which is an international standard covering the transportation of hazardous materials. In the UK this is enforced by various bodies, such as the Police, Ministry of Transport and VOSA. These regulations limit the amount of fuel that can be transported, unless the driver holds an additional ADR licence and the vehicle has the specified safety equipment aboard. If stopped carrying more than the quantities shown below, then as the very least you will be prevented from completing your journey, until a suitably qualified driver and vehicle is found. A private individual is allowed to carry a maximum of 240 litres in containers no larger than 60 litres. Higher viscosity grades have more resistance to flow than lower viscosity grades. Oil gets thinner as it gets hotter, so to determine the correct viscosity grade for an application you need to know the operating temperature of the oil. Engines that run high operating oil temperatures require higher viscosity oil. Engines that run low oil temps require lower viscosity oil. Years ago, it was common practice to use lighter “Winter” grade oils during the colder winter months, and then switch to a heavier oil for higher temperature Summer driving. Zinc vs. Detergent While the reduction of zinc, phosphorus and sulfur in today’s motor oils is a significant change, there is more to the story. Specifically, the detergent additives used in modern oils have also changed. Here are some key facts about zinc and detergents and how they work. The oil additive Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate (ZDDP) works because it is a polar molecule. ZDDP is attracted to ferrous metal surfaces. Under heat and load, the ZDDP reacts with the steel to create the sacrificial film that protects flat tappet camshafts, roller lifters, piston rings, cylinder bores and push rod tips. Obviously, temperature affects which viscosity of oil to use. For example, an NHRA Pro Stock engine, a NASCAR Sprint Cup engine and a World of Outlaws 410 Sprint engine have very different operating oil temperatures – 100°F, 220°F and 300°F. As a result, all three engines run very different viscosity oils - SAE 0W-5, SAE 5W-20 and SAE 15W-50. With the correct viscosity oil, friction and wear are reduced. Using too high of a viscosity oil can result in excessive oil temperature and increased drag. Using too low of a viscosity oil can lead to excessive metal to metal contact of moving parts. “We have to run stock rocker arms, and the XP1 oil tripled the part life of the rocker arms. Detergent and dispersant additives “compete” against zinc in the engine because they are also polar molecules. The “old school” theory on engine break-in was to run non-detergent oils, and this allowed for greater activation of the zinc additive in the oil. Many “old school” oils had higher levels of zinc (ZDDP) and lower levels of detergent. The perfect solution for mid-race refuelling, having been used at a number of MSA governed historic endurance races over the last few years in the UK. Each can is easy to use, with no spilling or mess. The clever neck design includes a spring loaded valve that only releases fuel when the collar in compressed. The flow of fuel stops when either the neck is released, or the fuel level reaches the breather tube in the neck. It is also self-venting during operation and includes a seal in the neck which prevents vapours from escaping. Each can holds 20 litres and takes approximately 75 seconds to empty. We will not cover any return freight cost. Damaged goods on arrival If the goods were damaged before they reached you, we will either refund the cost in full along with the carriage costs, or arrange for a replacement order to be sent, free of charge. Faulty products In the unlikely event of a genuine manufacturing fault, a full refund for parts and carriage costs will be issued. Payment Orders can be accepted over the telephone, by email, fax or via our website. Payment must be made in full, prior to dispatch, by credit/ debit card or via cheque or bank transfer. Title and Delivery Ownership or Title to the product shall not pass to the buyer until Anglo American Oil Company has received payment in full.
