yourself to be consumed, you begin to
experience the setting, the color, or the
emotion he is trying to convey, and all
with no lyrics. To say Brian is amazing is
truly an understatement.
He has now been playing guitar for
close to 40 years starting with a plastic
Emony when he was twelve, which he had
gotten for Christmas. When he was
thirteen he was given a Harmony Stella
which he played until he was 17 when he
got an Epiphone
acoustic guitar.
Let’s guess there
were a few hours
put in on those
guitars. Then the
next summer he
bought a Les Paul
which he still
owns but
normally does not
play out anymore.
The most recent
addition is “The
Dreamcaster”
which combines a
6-string guitar, a
baritone guitar
and a mini-harp
all in a single
acoustic
instrument. The
guitar was built
by Patrick
Popadec from
Madison. Brian
stated “I
imagined it and
he made it real”.
Back in the 80’s and early 90’s Brian
was not a stranger to the rock or blues
scene and all that came with it. He played
in the Cleveland area in bands such as
“Ring of Fire” and “DT and The Shakes”.
He was an award winning rock guitarist
until 1994 when his last band of that
genre broke up. In 1998 he was named
“Best Local Performer” by Cleveland
Magazine. For many years and several
CD’s later Brian does making a living
“playing his own internal soundtrack”. He
travels all over the country to play
bookstores, coffee houses, wineries and
larger venues as well. The concert on his
DVD was recorded at Cuyahoga
Community College along with an
interview on the program Words and
Music. Brian was featured on a WVIZ
Special, performing with his Dreamcaster
very shortly after he received it. The other
guitarist on the show was Les Paul.
From a writer or interviewer’s
standpoint, Brian Henke was a pure
pleasure to talk with. His warmth, sense of
humor, and kindred spirit with nature
came across openly with
loving enthusiasm. He has a
feather attached to his
guitar that was given to him
by someone special with an
overall meaning of “a
connection to the earth and
sky”. Brian shared the fact
that he often composes songs
after he has visited a place
as the songs just seem to
come to him and title
themselves. There are times
when he consciously
composes elements that he
wants to bring to life, but for
the most part the music
seems to channel through
him as energy and emerges
with true emotion through
the strings of his guitar.
Brian does his own bookings
and we are very fortunate he
has decided to accept quite a

songs for a generation that are
starving for music with such uplifting

what I’m saying here, this
isn’t church music and it
isn’t just acoustic. Daric

DARK ARENA
Alien Factor
By Sage Satori
A phenomenal mixture of Metal styles
is accomplished by Dark Arena on
their 9 track compilation, Alien Factor.
This 2006 release is still available and
will satisfy most any “metal head”.
Some may attempt to shove this into a
“Thrash” box but not I. The sound is a
combination of the current power
pounding sound while instilling some
old school guitar work and even
Sabbath like vocals on some cuts.
Surprising to me is the solid,
distinguishable, and even meaningful
lyrics that flow through 8 of the 9

It’s coming! That’s right, it’s almost
here. Labor Day is just around the
corner. Can you believe it? There’s
just no way to slow the time down, so
we just have to make the best possible
use of it. There have been many ways
to enjoy the summer weather this year
and I hope you had a chance to take
advantage of some of them. We’ve had
our share of “rain-outs” this year but
hey, what ya gonna do? There have
also been some picture perfect days as
well. The Ohio Wine Producers are
among the fortunate ones whose event
took place upon two of the most perfect
days of the summer. The weather, the
wines and the food were all wonderful
at Vintage Ohio 2008. Wine
enthusiasts from all over the state of
Ohio, and beyond, enjoyed two
beautiful days filled with great music,
good friends and good cheer. This
event is definitely one of the highlights
of a North Coast Summer.
But hey! It isn’t over yet. There is
still time to catch the final concert of
the “Jazz on the Vine” series at
Debonne Vineyards. Justo Saborit will
be appearing on Sunday, August 24th
8
to wrap up the 2008 season. Thanks
to 107.3 “The Wave” and Debonne
Vineyards for a superb summertime
jazz line up. The evenings do seem to
be getting just a bit cooler lately, no
problem, stop in at Seekers Coffee
House on Saturday, August 23rd and
enjoy an evening of jazz with Debbie
Gifford and warm up with one of the
many gourmet blends that Seekers
has to offer.
Fun doesn’t have to end with the
month of August! Sure, Labor Day
Weekend does somehow signify the
end of the summer season, but don’t
let that bring you down. Why not
spend your holiday weekend enjoying
the fun and festivities that have made
Geneva on the Lake such a popular
destination. The Old Firehouse
Winery features live entertainment all
weekend and they have recently reresurrected their old time Ferris
Wheel which now overlooks Lake Erie.
The Ferris Wheel provides an
awesome view of the stunning Lake
Erie sunsets.
There is still plenty of good weather
yet to come and many more fairs and
festivals to enjoy as we make our
transition from summer to fall. So
what, if we have to start bringing a
jacket along, just in case, I can deal
with that. We can still enjoy the green
grass and the flowers a bit longer
before the leaves begin to turn, and
what better place to do this than at
Cleveland’s Rockefeller Park and
Gardens, located at the top of 88th
Street, just off of Martin Luther King
Blvd. Summer annuals are currently
on display in the garden and on
September 6th, the Rockefeller
Greenhouse will host the 6th annual
“JAZZ at The Rockefeller Greenhouse”
concert featuring The Annette Keys
Trio. Also performing will be The Jazz
Heritage Orchestra. The concert
begins at 1:00 pm. and is free to all
who attend. JAZZ’S motto is “Tour the
Grounds! Dig the Sounds!” For more
information, visit
www.rockefellergreenhouse.org
So, don’t “hole up” for the winter
just yet, let’s extend our summer for at
least one more month.

two are temporary board members of
the Blues Society.
Although there are other blues
societies in the state, (Cincy Blues
Society, Marietta Blues Society,
Creekside Blues Society of Columbus,
Black Swamp Blues Society of Toledo,
Mahoning River Blues Society, and
North Central Blues Society of
Mohican County), the Cleveland area
did not have one until recently when a
grass-roots effort began to help
promote blues in northeastern Ohio.
“First and foremost, it’s about the
music,” says Gary “Big Daddy” Craft.
“The purpose of the society is to preserve
the music, make sure the artists are
heard, and get the fans and players out
to the blues clubs. Nowadays money is
tight, club business is down, and people
stay home.”
Bob Frank adds: “Blues music has
always been about the peaks and
valleys. Right now, we are in a valley,
so to speak. The economy is faltering,
and people aren’t going out to the clubs
like they used to. Blues is not heard

The Society plans to meet once a

at a different venue, with a jam session
immediately following. “Mondays used
to be the Blues Nights around here,”
says Bob Frank. “We chose Monday for

promise to have them home before

Time for this writer to do her part –
Almost any given night of the week,
one can find live blues somewhere in
the Cleveland area. The long-running
blues jam at Cebar’s 185th takes place
on Sunday nights from 8:00 to 12:00,
hosted by the Alan Greene Band
featuring Mr. Stress. Cebar’s also hosts
special Reunion Jams on Thanksgiving,
Christmas, Easter, and Labor Day that
feature the musicians who were there
at the beginning, when it all started.
Brothers Lounge has a Sunday night
blues and rock jam, and on Mondays
hosts a jazz jam. On Wednesdays,
Parkview Niteclub on West 58th is the
home of a blues jam hosted by Michael
Bay and the Bad Boys of Blues, which
draws some heavy hitters from all over
the Cleveland area. Also on
Wednesdays, a little farther to the
south, Butch Armstrong and Tower
City Blues are heatin’ things up at the
Loose Moose in Sagamore Hills. On
Thursdays, the Savannah Bar & Grille
in Westlake is the scene of a swingin’
jam session also featuring those Bad
Boys of Blues with a different guest
host each week. Butch Armstrong also
hosts a Thursday night jam at the
Moonlight Tavern on Broadview
Road from 8:30 – to 11:30. For you
east-siders, The House of Swing
provides the venue for another longrunning Open Musician’s Night with
the Reid Project, featuring Miss
Butterscotch, also on Thursdays.

Tom Todd's new CD "SHOWOFF"
is now available at all Tom's gigs!
I’ve been fortunate enough to
have played a lot of music gigs in my
life. Sometimes I play for wonderful,
enthusiastic people. Sometimes it gets
ugly, and sometimes (this is the worst)
I’m ignored. However, most of the time
I’m very thankful that someone is
paying me money to bang on my guitar
and croak out a few songs.
But whenever I think about my
best gigs, I remember a particular gig
when I was in 7th grade (yes, 94 years
ago!) that was more rewarding, and
changed my life more than any gig
since.
Let’s see…7th grade. I must have
been about 12-13 years old. I had
joined my first real band. Two of the
members were even 8th graders! Wow!
I was hanging out with the elite! (I
remember how I’d earned that glorious
position: I’d gone to a tryout, and after
playing, they said, “Well, you’re the
only one who tried out, so I guess
you’re in the band.”)
Back then we had two ‘gigs’ to
prepare for: The Middle School Talent
Show and The Drummer’s Parents’
Pool Party (for which we were paid the
handsome sum of $10. Total. That’s
$2.50 each! We were thrilled! I would
have framed that $2.50, except the

Then one day the drummer told me
we had a third job! Cool! We were to
play for the Muskegon County Health
Dept. something or other. I wasn’t
really clear on where we were going. I
pictured some building where
everyone inside was very healthy. But
it was a gig! We were on our way to
stardom!
We lugged our trailer-full of amps
and speakers to the place. Our talent
was questionable, but let there be no
doubt: WE WERE LOUD! We got set
up and when we were all ready the
director of the place let the audience
in….
It turns out we were at the
Muskegon County Retardation Center.
The people who filed in suffered from
all levels of physical and mental
retardation. Some could barely walk,
or talk. Some were in wheelchairs or
even hospital beds. Some had distorted
heads, contorted faces, disfigured
bodies. To a 12 year old kid, it was
scary! My first thought was: I didn’t
know these kinds of people existed!
(My second thought was: I might
feint!) I experienced the sudden
revelation that I had been living a very
sheltered life. I realized that, in this
world, things – or people - that are
unpleasant or disturbing to the rest of
us are hustled away and put in special
places, to the point where the general
public doesn’t even know they’re there.
[At this point, I hope no one is
screaming “Bad taste!” or “How dare
you bring this up!” My whole point is it
should be brought up. Every kid should
be shown places like this, or better yet
spend a little time helping out at places
like this. It sure puts things into
perspective, which is just what kids
need.]
Back to the story; although we were
shaken, we plowed into our first song.
The effect was magical! Instantly,
everyone was bopping or clapping or
dancing to our music! They smiled and
laughed and waved their hands in the
air. In between songs, they cheered like
we were the Beatles. As I remember,
there were times when I was so
mesmerized that I totally forgot how to
play the songs, and I was just playing
random notes. But it didn’t matter.
They loved the music. And I think they
loved us, not because we were such
fantastic musicians, but because we
were there, playing for them. The mood
was so up and positive that I think I
cried.
As I played, I watched these
wonderful people, each dealing with
some affliction or limitation that keeps
them from living what we call a normal
life. I realized this wasn’t some movie,
where the director yells “Cut” and the
actors all take off their makeup and
their fake deformed limbs and go home
to their normal lives. These people
would be this way for all their lives. It
made me see how precious life is. And I
was thankful to be healthy and able to
play a bass guitar, throw a football, or
to go to school and be (more or less) like
the other kids. I gained a respect for
these people who could not do such
things, but could still find happiness
and have such a positive outlook on
life.
When the show was over, as most of
the audience was filing out, I noticed
the director was leading an older man
by the arm up to us. The fellow
obviously could barely walk. I was
amazed at how he struggled to take his
tiny shuffling steps, and at how patient
the director was. When they got up to
the stage, the director said, “This is
Earl, and he has something to say to
you.” Earl seemed to gather up what
little strength he had, smiled, and
whispered out, “Thank you.”
I think we skipped class that day to
play this gig. It was the best education
I ever had.

Geneva-on-the-Lake is gearing up for
the 2nd Annual “Thunder on the Strip”
motorcycle rally, to be held September
5th, 6th, and 7th, 2008. “The Strip” at
GOTL is a nostalgic lakeside getaway,
lined with bars, restaurants, wineries,
arcades, motels, cottages, and gift
shops. This year’s event includes Rhett
Rotten’s Wall of Death, Contraband
(the all-Harley stunt team), bike
shows, bike and people games, and a
chance to win a Jesse James chopper.
Thunder on the Strip was cofounded by Jake Hummel ( Sportsterz
Bar & Grill), and Dwayne Bennett
(Goblin Custom Cycles) in 2007, then
became a non-profit 501c (3)
organization in 2008, along with
Anthony Delia (Lakefront Restaurant).
“We wanted to lengthen the tourist
season, and put Geneva-on-the Lake on
the map as a motorcycle destination,”
says Jake. The tiny lakefront village
has always been a biker-friendly
community, and motorcyclists from all
over have been visiting the resort for
generations.
The event kicks off with a Poker
Walk, designed to meet the locals at
the various establishments along the
strip. Check in at Sportsterz anytime
starting Friday at 3 PM. You may
enter once per day or take the whole
weekend. Entry form must be returned
to Sportsterz by 5 Pm on Sunday.
Prizes are $250 for best hand, and
$100 for worst hand. Check with
participating stops for rules.
Live entertainment will be featured
all weekend at Sportsterz, the
legendary Cove Nightclub, the
Pavilion, Yankie’s, Sandy Chanty,
Firehouse Winery, and several other
bars and restaurants. Vendors include
custom bike and trike builders, LED
and custom lighting, sunglasses, tattoo
artists, leather clothing, custom
painting, and official rally
merchandise. All official rally events
and times will be listed in the rally
brochure, available about one week
before.
Sportsterz Bar and Grill just
completed major renovations in
preparation for this year’s event. A
new front façade has been added with
a saloon look, complete with a new
LED message center. The paved
parking area for motorcycles behind

favorite last year, and the Burnout Pit has been enlarged and

stage; Saturday night features party
band Dave’s Planet. House favorite
Cowboy Donnie will perform

BULLSEYE
What makes Bullseye unique is
having 2 female and 2 male vocalists,
allowing them to cover just about
anything they want. “We’re currently
doing, Love Shack, believe it or not.”
said Mark Dershaw,( steel guitar,
rhythm guitar, harmonica and vocals).
“Without the versatile vocals in our
band we would be very limited on what
we could play, and we’d sound a lot
like other bands!”
Bullseye is a super, high energy
talented country band. With some of
their own country originals they also
cover a lot of new country material you
hear on the radio, like Carrie
Underwood and Gretchen Wilson, as
well as the classics of Patsy Cline and
Johnny Cash. Much of the new country
is high energy enough to keep people
dancing. Everyone in the band is

versatile enough to play just about any
type of music, including classic rock
tunes. “Peppering our repertoire with
different styles helps keep us on our
toes too,” said Dershaw.
The Members:

Lead and harmony vocals / rhythm

Jason Amy: (Kinsman, Ohio) Bass

Bullseye Beginnings:
An earlier version of the band lost their
lead singer and rhythm guitar player.
That left the drummer, bassist, lead
guitar player and a second female
singer to look for new members. They
located Wendy Wills through the
internet. Wendy was a young singer/
songwriter looking for a band and lived
in the local area. After a few practices
with Wendy, the band agreed that
things were clicking. The lead guitar
player then contacted his friend who
he’d played in various bands with since
high school to join in and complete the
sound. The band practiced for a couple
of months, preparing for their first set
of gigs in the fall of 2007. A medical
emergency with a band member put
the band on hold for a little while as
the 2007 gigs had to be canceled. But
Bullseye kept practicing as much as
possible and debuted with their first
performance in January of 2008. The
bookings have been steady ever since.
Bullseye has appeared multiple times
at Jewels Dance Hall to a packed
crowd. They are excited to show their
stuff to the great folks at Debonne
Winery on September 5, and it’s a great
time of year to visit there! With fall not
far behind, you can smell the maturing
grapevines as you cruise down winding
vineyard roads.
Mark Dershaw tells me, “We’re a
realistic group of folks, all with day
jobs and very established in our lives.
We’re enjoying our current popularity
in the places we play and are always
keeping an eye out for new venues. The
ultimate for us is to play for a full
house, no matter what size the room,
and to have people share the energy
that we experience when we play.
That’s not to say that we wouldn’t
consider any opportunity to take it up
another notch. We did make it to the
final playoffs to win the chance to open
up for Kenny Chesney at the Cleveland
Browns Stadium. We came in second
and didn’t get to do the show, but got
some publicity for it and had just a
great time competing.”

Although MSB disbanded in 1986, Michael

performances. After releasing his 22nd
album in July 2007, the born and bred
Clevelander continues to perform for
diehard fans while winning over new ones
in the process.
No stranger to Cleveland, or its
highways, Donnie Iris and The Cruisers
developed their name from the countless
hours spent on the Ohio/Pennsylvania
Turnpike. Traveling back and forth
between band member’s homes scattered
across Northeast Ohio and Pennsylvania, as
well as and their recording studio in
Cleveland. With the production help of
Mark Avsec, Donnie and The Cruisers
graced the charts, placing in the top 30
twice with their songs “Ah! Leah!” and “My
Girl.” The band headlined shows all over
the country and toured with dozens of
artists, including Journey, Loverboy, Bon
Jovi, Hall & Oates and The Michael Stanley
Band. After 29 years together, the band
continues to impress fans and release new
music, including the 2006 radio single
“Little Black Dress” off Ellwood City.

hit singles. Favorites such as “Take Me, I’m
Yours,” “Black Coffee in Bed,” “Cool for
Cats” and “Up the Junction” are just a
handful of songs from the bands 25 year
repertoire. Squeeze is preceded by local
special guest, Winslow.
Squeeze developed quite a following and
was thought of as one of the traditional pop
bands of the new wave era. During the 80s,
the band enjoyed revered success, toured
relentlessly and headlined Madison Square
Garden in 1982. In 1998, Squeeze recorded
their self-financed final album Domino and
then disbanded. To the delight of fans,
Essential Squeeze, a deluxe box set with
demos, rarities and expanded liner notes,
was released in April 2007.
Local special guest Winslow will deliver
their signature soul/rock sound Saturday
evening at 7:30pm. The six-man band will
share their first full-length album Crazy
Kind of Love with the hometown crowd.
The group has shared the stage with high
profile acts including OAR, GZA of WuTang Clan and MTV’s DJ Scribble. The
work of Maurice Martin (vocals), Matt
Tieman (saxophone), Curtis Tate (keys),
Neal Campbell (guitar), Brian Robertson
(bass) and Justin Hofmann (drums) has
already caught the attention of industry
veterans including Motown Records
veteran Gene Shelton. Some of our North
Coast Voice team had the privilege of
seeing Winslow at The Beachland Ballroom
a while back and they really execute an
outstanding, high energy, performance that
is worth getting there early for!
An afternoon party rolls in on the
Budlight Main Stage Sunday, August
31st at 4:30 pm Big Head Todd and The
Monsters, Presented by Time Warner
Cable. With seven studio albums under
their belt, the Colorado-based band of Todd
Park Mohr (singer/guitarist), Rob Squires
(bassist/singer), Jeremy Lawton,
August 20 - September 3, 2008
(keyboardist/guitarist/singer) and Brian
Nevin (drummer/singer) the blues-based
pop band are better known as Big Head
Todd and The Monsters. In 1993, Big
Head Todd and The Monsters pushed their
album Sister Sweetly to platinum status
with a string of Top 10 singles including
“Bittersweet,” “Broken Hearted Savior,”
“Circle” and “It’s Alright.” After being
“discovered” the band put out 1994’s
Stratagem, 1997’s Beautiful World, 2001’s
Riviera and 2004’s Crimes of Passion. All
the Love You Need is the band’s latest work
which features a punk rock element. While
the band no longer tours college towns, the
35 shows they do play a year keeps their
fans coming back for more.
Prior to Los Lonely Boys taking the
stage, Dave Barnes and his achy guitar
will warm up the Taste of Cleveland crowd
at 7:30pm. After graduating from Middle
Tennessee State University, Dave moved to
Nashville to follow his dream. Despite
17
Nashville’s cutthroat reputation, Dave
found friends and peers among Matt
Wertz, Gabe Dixon and Mat Kearney. Dave
crisscrossed the country selling vanloads of
his two independent albums Brother, Bring
The Sun and Chasing Mississippi. Along
the way, Dave landed songs in films and on
television and thousands discovered his
soulful melodies. With a guest appearance
on his album by Amy Grant and a fan base
including John Mayer, Dave was living his
dream. Dave’s most recent album Me and
You and the World was inspired by his
service trips to Africa. The first single
“Until You” is an enthusiastic crowd
favorite you don’t want to miss.
At 9:15pm Sunday night, the Bud Light
Main Stage will welcome Los Lonely
Boys Presented by Q104. Andrea Razavi,
staff writer for The North Coast Voice
Magazine, was fortunate to secure an
interview with LLB and here is how that
all came together.
Los Lonely Boys,
Rock the Taste of Cleveland,
“Texican Style”
~ By Andrea Razavi
These three young and incredibly
talented brothers, with the signature hit
“Heaven,” include eldest brother and
frontman, Henry (lead guitar and vocals),
middle brother, Jojo, (bass and vocals) and
youngest brother, Ringo Garza (drums and
vocals). From a small west Texas town,
they developed a
successful
following and a
huge fan base
after winning
best Pop Vocal
Duo/Group at
the 2005
Grammy
Awards and
being nominated
for Best Record
and Best New
Artist of the
Year. Climbing
the charts still
today, and
creating multiplatinum
albums,
releasing their
third one last
month. The Los
Lonely Boys are
thrilled to be
headlining The
Taste of
18
Cleveland and bringing their Texican style
Rock to our rock and roll capital.
As far as their resume goes, it’s pretty
darn impressive considering the Garza
brothers are only 26, 28 and 30 years
respectively. With two multi-platinum
studio albums in 2003, winning five Austin
Music Awards in 2004, and following that
with a prime slot at the Austin City Limits
festival, they released a live CD (Live at the
Fillmore) and DVD (Texican Style: Live in
Austin). Eldest brother and guitar virtuoso,
Henry, solidified his reputation as the
latest and greatest Texas blues guitarist
when Guitar World named him 2005’s
Breakthrough Artist. They’ve shared a
stage with Tim McGraw, the Rolling Stones
and Dylan; at one of Neil Young’s Bridge
School benefits, Henry even got to strum
the Beatles-inspired “My Loneliness” to
Paul McCartney himself. In 2006 they
released, Sacred, a number 2 on the
Billboard charts. Sacred is personal, true to
the essence of their spirit; a stunning
mélange of electric blues with Texas taste.
It’s old fashioned rock’n’roll, Texican style,
as the boys call it. They share a special
friendship with the great Willie Nelson who
Jojo tells me was an iconic legend to them
growing up. Los Lonely Boys recently
released their third album, Forgiven, in
July of this year.
One middle sibling to another, I had the
wonderful opportunity to talk with middle
brother, singer, bassist, Jojo Garza, about
their beginnings, their philosophies on life
and the Texican Rock and Roll they seem to
August 20 - September 3, 2008
effortlessly create, album after album,
show after show.
It is abundantly clear, the Los Lonely
Boys have an intense deep love of family,
love of God, love for life itself, and of
course, love of music. The San Angelo,
Texas born brothers grew up on music from
the influence of both mother and father.
Ironically though, middle brother Jojo tells
me his parents divorced when they were
young, but they are still an incredibly close
family. Much like the culture they come
from, family is everything. Although they
tour the country, often recording in
Nashville, home is still considered San
Angelo, Texas, to the Los Lonely Boys.
“There’s only one shopping mall there” Jojo
tells me, “we now have an Olive Garden;
there are a couple of golf courses, an
airforce base. We grew up on a whole
different side of town, a sort of rough part.
We really grew up with nothing but each
other… that’s a lot of the reason we feel
the way we do about family.” This great
appreciation or gratitude is further
evidenced by talking with Garza as he
emphasizes an orderliness to this
appreciation: “The way we were raised, it’s
all about family, family comes first, then
we have the love of our spirits and being
part of the human race that God created,
and through Jesus Christ you get to
Heaven and after that comes the music
and the rest of life. “
“At a very early age, about four Henry
was plucking his first guitar and wrote his
first song called, She Left Me, I don’t even
remember him having a girlfriend back
then.” Jojo says with a warm laughter.
“The song was influenced by my father, the
way we grew up hearing his music and
songs.” The brothers toured across Texas
and Nashville with father, Enrique Garza.
They decided to go it alone and test their
own talents, thus forming the “Texican”
rock band Los Lonely Boys.
What is Texican style rock and roll then?
When record labels caught onto to
these gems, management asked the
brothers to define their music. Jojo tells
me, “They asked us how we define our
music? We never considered any
boundaries because we come from such
different styles of music. We were largely
influenced, growing up, hearing the sounds
of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Fats
Domino, Richie Valence, The Beatles,
Elvis,….even the 80s music and groups like
Guns and Roses influenced us. We decided
to call it Texican style rock and roll. The
brothers created a smooth sound comprised
of electric blues, Latin roots and good old
fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. The Los Lonely Boys
tie it all together with uncanny talent.
Nissan and Yahoo team up to provide
live set performances at http://
new.music.yahoo.com/nissanlivesets/
where you can see videos from the latest
album, “Forgiven” produced by Steve
Jordan and recorded live on a sound stage.
The songs touch on love, life, and
everything in between. Front man and big
brother, Henry, “Are y’all ready for some
Texican Rock and Roll?” Henry wails on his
guitar with Jojo singing harmony to the
verses; it’s Texan blues and southern rock
with Henry’s seductive string
reverberating guitar licks tempered with
his smooth and soulful vocals. “Your heart
won’t tell a lie”….he chants, “Think with
your heart not your mind.” The sibling
added vocals are a Richie Valence likeness.
Henry’s guitar licks charm us with
unbridled talent as he uses his guitar to
talk and tell the story. With lightning fast
fingers, owning the strings on his guitar,
the song truly convinces us the heart won’t
tell a lie. Ringo on drums is just as

brings a new style of metal to the
table. Guitarist, Al Faulkner, brings a
new comprehension of metal guitar
playing, with dark blues and bone
crushing riffs to form that signature
sound. Drummer Kevin Heiss true to
the hand and feet coordination takes
metal and funk drumming to the next
level. Bassist, Andre Fedak’s, unique
approach and tone brings the
thunderous, tight, rhythmic bottom
end that defines the bands brutal
attack.
Their latest road trip was Aug. 8th
for their debut appearance on Fox 8’s
Underground TV, PA. The filming of
the next music video for the track
“Alive Again” was a great success for
the band and its followers. Look for
the show to air in January or February
2009.
In addition to the live performances
TORNE has been developing a very
strong Internet presence on music
sites such as www.garageband.com
and www.ourstage.com. “Stoneman”
was the Metal track of the day Aug
2nd on garageband.com along with 6
top 20 placements on ourstage.com.
With the most notable being “Left 4
Dead” placing 5th of 720 entries back
in June of this year. The band has
also built their popularity on
myspace.com as well as many other
sites.
Every month Torne seems to have
a new story to tell. This month they
are featured on the Sept.08
compilation CD in Metal Edge Mag.
This mag will reach over 100,000
Metal maniacs worldwide. This is a
big shot in the arm for their exposure
to the world’s Metal demographic.
The track “Left 4 Dead” Is song #9 on
the disc.
Torne is also a part of the soon to
be released Film documentary
“Behind the Suit and Tie” featuring
the tracks “Alive Again” and the
music video for “Stoneman”. This
documentary focuses on the Metal
music business and the future of the
music business from a record Labels
perspective. This film includes many
top names from A&R people to
popular Metal artist of today, quite
an honor for a Cleveland band.
The band will be performing a
variety of shows in and around the

By Donniella Winchell
Merlot, the Softer Side of Red
During the wine boom in the late 90’s,
national wine marketers were looking
for ‘ABC wines’ [anything but
chardonnay and cabernet]. They
needed some ‘new’ and drinkable
varieties to promote. And, while
serious connoisseurs mused about the
mysteries of huge, complex, intense,
full cabernet sauvignons, most regular
were people looking for pleasant wines
that tasted great with food. On the red
side, merlot [mer-low] emerged in a big
way.
Much of the early work with merlot
in this country had been done in
Washington State at the Chateau St.
Michelle winery in the early 80’s.
While historically, in Europe and
California, merlot had been used as a
blending wine in cabernets, vintners at
that pioneering Northwest winery
realized their growing conditions
offered an opportunity to develop
exceptional wines that would meet the
needs of wine marketers and emerging
consumers. Some of the best merlots in
the world now come from their
vineyards.
Merlot works most years in our
region because it ripens earlier than
the cabernets and can take full
advantage when we have a dry,
extended fall season. And, the grapes
do well when they ‘struggle’ in difficult,
low yield soils. On the downside, to
produce the highest quality merlots,
lots of summer sunshine is critical.
During an especially cold and rainy
year, growers have difficulty in
attaining ideal ripeness and coloration
levels. Finally, severe, uneven winters
are always a concern. Wild fluctuations
in temperature readings can destroy
the actual vines. However, a quote
from David Lake, ground-breaking
winemaker who led the early wine
revolution in the Columbia Valley,
underscores why northeast Ohio does
produce some terrific merlots. He
believes ‘Good merlot is born out of
adversity.’ Mother Nature gives us a
leg up in that category.
In the cellar, merlots are handled
like most other reds: fermentation on
the skins, aging in oak barrels, racking
for clarification, etc. Sometime during
mid winter, winemakers also put
merlots through a secondary
22
fermentation called ‘malolactic’
fermentation where the harsher but
natural malic acids [think tart apple]
are converted to lactic acids [think
milk.]
The resulting wine is soft, supple
and very easy to enjoy with a great
meal or just a selection of simple
cheeses, bread and fruit. The finished
wine will show hints of cherry, dark
chocolate and sometimes a cinnamon
like spice on the palate. It is much less
intense than the cabernets, but has
enough natural tannin to make it
interesting. Any food that traditionally
would be served with a red wine will go
well with merlot. Merlot is designed to
be consumed within a few years of
harvest, so for our emerging regional
industry, it works for winemakers here
trying to satisfy consumers’ demands
for more red wines.

Easy Skillet Chicken with Red
Wine
INGREDIENTS:
1 broiler fryer, cut up, about 3 to 3 1/2
pounds
4 slices bacon, cut in 1/2-inch pieces
2 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup chopped onions
8 ounces sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup chopped green onion
2 cloves garlic, crushed and minced
2 tablespoons flour
2 cups dry red wine
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
dash dried leaf thyme, crushed
salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS:
1. Season chicken with salt and pepper.
In a large skillet, cook bacon until crisp;
remove bacon and set aside. To the bacon
drippings in skillet add butter; brown
chicken slowly until all sides are golden
brown.
2. Add the 3/4 cup onion and mushrooms;
sauté until tender. Add green onion and
garlic. Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the
fat; blend in the flour then gradually add
the wine. Cook, stirring constantly, until
sauce is thickened and bubbly. Add parsley
and thyme.
3. Cover and simmer 30 minutes, or until
chicken is tender and juices run clear. Serve
with a garnish or parsley, if desired.
Serves 4.

Blue Cheese Crusted Filet Mignon
with Port Wine Sauce
INGREDIENTS:
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup minced white onion
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
3/4 cup low-sodium beef broth
1/2 cup port wine
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
4 filet mignon steaks (1 1/2 inch thick)
3/4 cup crumbled blue cheese
1/4 cup panko bread
crumbs
DIRECTIONS:
1. Melt butter in a
skillet over medium
heat. Add the onion,
garlic and thyme.
Cook, stirring
constantly, until
onion is tender. Stir in the beef broth,
scraping any onion bits from the bottom of
the pan, then stir in the port wine. Bring to
a boil, and cook until the mixture has
reduced to about 1/2 cup. Set aside. This
may also be made ahead of time, and
reheated.
2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175
degrees C). Heat oil in a cast-iron or other
oven-safe skillet over high heat. Sear steaks
quickly on both sides until brown, then
place the whole pan into the oven.
3. Roast steaks in the oven for about 15
minutes for medium rare - with an internal
temperature of 145 degrees F (63 degrees
C). You may adjust this time to allow the
steaks to finish just below your desired
degree of doneness if medium is not what
you prefer. Remove from the oven, and
place on a baking sheet. Stir together the
panko crumbs and blue cheese. Top each
steak with a layer of this mixture.
4. Preheat the oven’s broiler. Place steaks
under the preheated broiler until the cheese
topping is browned and bubbly. 3 to 4
minutes. Remove from the oven, and let
stand for at least 15 minutes before
serving. Serve with warm port
wine sauce.

Stickman Bangs Our Heads With

FEATURING PAST
AND PRESENT
LOCAL BANDS
FROM N.E. OHIO
AND N.W. PA.
PERFORMING
ORIGINAL MUSIC!
Stickman sat in for the vacationing
Hunter on the August 9th show and
gave us a heavy flavor of the Local
Music Scene. Taking us back in the
80’s with an old local favorite the hard
rockin bunch,
Savage, with
Here’s
Looking At
You. A
reunion by
these guys
would be
awesome and
people from
all over
would show
up. C’mon
guys, how
about it?
Right after
that we got Shok Paris with their
title 1984 LP track Go For The Throat.
Of all the mid-’80’s Cleveland metal
bands Shok Paris achieved the most
national notoriety. They received play
on MTV’s “Headbanger’s Ball,” and led
to a simulcast concert on Z-Rock, a
nationally-syndicated radio station.
They’re at www.cleveland-metal.com/
history/shokparis.php.
After the break, Stickman showed
no mercy providing us with Icarus
Witch doing Alice Cooper’s “Roses
On White Lace”. This Pittsburgh
metal band can boast working with
metal greats such as Dokken and
Fates Warning. They were also
featured regularly in mags like Metal
Maniacs, BW & BK, Outburn, Hit
Parader, Pit, Explicitly Intense,
Unrestrained and North Coast Voice.
After talking with guitarist Quinn
Lukas, Stick gave us their hair raising
version of Def Leppard’s “Mirror
Mirror” with
Joe Lynn
Turner (of
Rainbow,
Deep Purple
and Yngwie
Malmsteen) on
vocals. Then
from their
Songs For The
Lost CD, we
got an original
power ballad
“Smoke and
Mirrors”. Check
them out at
icaruswitch.com.
Getting closer to home, out of
Ashtabula, came ReEntry with
“Confusion”. Just before playing their
second cut “Too Late”, guitarist Dan
Reed told Stickman that they are
planning a reunion soon. Getting more
familiar, Randy Trask & The Buds
came on the air with “Rock and Roll
Heaven” and “Rollercoaster”. The
Buds consists of four guys who love and
literally live to play, perform and
create great Rock N’ Roll Music. They
will be playing The Cove in GOTL on
Friday August 29. This will be a huge

history of Eric and how the band

Closing out the show Stickman
threw a changeup with local
punkabilly legends Lords Of The
Highway with “Ready To Rock”. They
have been steering a hellbound rig
through the underground scene since
1992. The Lords have hit all the stops
along the highway, from New York’s
famous CBGB’s to lesser known honky
tonk dives in the hills of West Virginia.
They are a “must see” band but be
ready to rock. Find out more about
them at www.rocknrollpurgatory.com.
Every cut made its debut on this
LIX show. Stickman really put on one
hell of a show that night. He is a rock
and roll archeologist with a wealth of
historical knowledge. He has
interviewed many rock legends such as
Paul Rodgers (Bad Company and The
Firm) and Ray Manzarek (The
Doors). You can catch his regular
program on FOX 107.5 FM Monday
thru Friday’s at 8pm. Thanks Stick!!
Hunter Returns With a
Vengeance on a Full Moon August
Night
We welcome back Hunter to his
regular scheduled program on this
beautiful full moon evening. What
better way to open than with Alex
Bevan’s “Skinny Little Boy” anthem
August 20 - September 3, 2008
we all got to know Alex by? Alex has
his line of “Skinny Pickles” available.
He sings to them while they are
growing in his garden. Check out his
ad here in The Voice where you can

Classic cut from Breathless with
“Unchained Lightning”. When you see
their website you’ll realize that
Breathless is a musical force to be
reckoned with. You can find them at
www.tevisentertainment.com/
breathlessbio.
Hunter then proceeds to kick the
doors in with “Drink,Drank,Drunk” by
Lords Of The Highway and didn’t let
up by plugging in Deja Voodoo’s “Hole
In My Pocket”. You read all about this
heavyweight band in Issue 11 of The
North Coast Voice. Following DVB,
was From Within with a really fine
cut titled “Storm of Anger”. This is
George Hartwig’s work when he is not
doing his Megadeath tribute
Degameth. It is mainly acoustic and he
has a lot of shows coming up. Look
George up on myspace to see where his
gigs are.
After the break All Dead from
Ashtabula haunted us with “Cory’s
Opus”. This cut is like no other that’s
ever played. It should be in a horror
movie classic. These guys ought to be
busy during Halloween.
Next up from Mentor was Asphalt
Juke with “Dying To”. They have such
a special sound produced in their
music. They will be at The Cove in
GOTL Fri Sept 5 th. Don’t miss them!
Second Sunday was next with
Beautiful. Very soon we should be
hearing of a long waited SS show now
that their new axeman is almost ready
to hit the stage.
Look out! Hunter is ready to throw
in his final blows with a NW PA
invasion. Paper St from Erie PA
started it with “Looking For Another”.
They were very active in the Celebrate
Erie Festivities. Then from Pittsburgh
came Shadow’s Force with “Rock &
Roll Paradise”. They will be invading
Sportsterz Bar Grille Saloon at
GOTL on Friday Aug 29th on the
Outdoor Budweiser stage at 5pm. I am
looking forward to this show.

expressive with each beat. You can see him
connecting with every musical vibe between
his guitarist brothers. Jojo sings so
passionately, playing the bass akin to an
extension of himself.
Title track song, Forgiven, on their new
album, gives us lyrics like, “…Take away
these feelins cause they break me down, I
can’t breathe, feels just like this whole
worlds comin down on me, oh I’ll be
forgiven for all I have done..if you set me
free from all this pain…” The music is
deeply moving with intense lyrics that are
honest and real. The song, “Staying With
Me”, also on Forgiven, gives us Jojo’s lead
vocals with Ringo backing up. Jojo’s vocals
are smooth like Sinatra. They all possess
the vocal gift, together mixing like a great
recipe with all the right ingredients to
make you smile. This Texican stuff is hot!
The song, “Superman”, gives us rare lead
vocals by equally gifted drummer, Ringo.
Jojo tells me that Ringo has not had a solo
song on an album since 1996. The lyrics are
incredibly sweet, telling a tale of a man
loving his woman so much that he wants to
be her Superman. The middle Garza
brother continues, “All of us write lyrics
about life on the road, what we experience,
falling in love, having kids, getting
married, times we’re down or just about
good times. Music is a universal language;
it’s a big part of what we do as human
beings.”
Like normal siblings, Garza tells me
they have moments of discord, but it’s rare;
“We usually see eye to eye on the music and
the business….don’t get me wrong …there
are occasional walls we have to tumble
down between each other; if one of us gets a
big head, the other two will break it down.”
The third generation Garza children, ten of
them between the three brothers, sing and

play instruments too. “It’s as much a part
of their life as it was for us growing up,”
Garza said. As performers, they are
influential persons in the media, so I ask
Jojo what he thinks of the mainstream
media’s influence on kids and family life
today. Garza explains, “A lot of what we
hear today has a lot to do with how family
and siblings don’t get along, how they can’t
spend a week together or be in the same
room….then you hear about families who
love each other, can’t live without each
other, and lost someone…..the media
perceptions may say you can’t get along,
but you can. We have to love one another,
especially family. That’s the message we
want you to tell the readers from us. A lot
of people don’t grow up the same way. They
don’t get to learn what life is really all
about.” I am taken to silence for a moment
as his words are tender and completely
from the heart.
Something people may not know about
the Los Lonely Boys: “We golf.” said Garza.
“I don’t think many people know that”. A
greater known fact is that the brothers are
X Box gamers; their favorites being Rock
Band and Guitar Hero.”
“What do you see for the future of Los
Lonely Boys?” I asked, “We want to
continue just as we are and we pray for
another day of life, that’s the first thing.
We will continue to write and play songs; if
other opportunities come along and we are
able to do something else with our music,
even acting…whatever opportunity comes
along, if we are healthy and alive, we
definitely will take it.”
Moving on to the next and final day of
“Taste of Cleveland” Monday, September
1st Southside Johnny and The Asbury
Jukes, presented by WNCX-FM, will take
the Bud Light Main Stage at 6:00pm to
throw a party filled with classic hits and
memorable favorites such as; “I Don’t
Want to Go Home,” “The Fever” and “It’s
Been a Long Time,” John Lyon teamed up
with his school buddies from the Jersey
shore in 1974 to form a rock band that
would quickly flourish and attract an
enthusiastic, die-hard fan base. Twenty
eight albums later they are here to rock
Labor Day in Cleveland Southside Johnny
style. Current members of the band are;
Southside Johnny, Eddie Manion, Joey
Stann, Chris Anderson, Muddy Shews, Jeff
Kazee, Mark Pender, Bob Bandiera, Joe
Bellia and Ricky Byrd.
R.A.T. Tri-C Recording Arts and
Technology Home Cookin’ Local Stage is a
melting pot of local band favorites and hot
up-and-comers. A total of three stages will
keep diners at Taste of Cleveland
entertained and add local flavor and flair;
the spotlight will shine on a talented crop
of regional musicians. Well-known acts
that regularly sell out the Northeast Ohio
concert scene are on deck to cook up a
rockin’ musical weekend. Grab a table and
savor the mouth-watering music and fresh
acts that perform regularly in your
backyard. The four-piece 80s rock band
The Breakfast Club (August 30) will
play favorites from Journey, Abba, Rick
Springfield and more. The young rock
stars from the Paul Green School of
Rock Sunday, August 31 always stun the
crowd with their awesome renditions of
Pink Floyd and Queen. If you have an
appetite for folk and roots-rock, check out
Pale Hollow or Mapgpies both August
31. Both acts have an arsenal of talented
musicians that will blow away any music
aficionado. If you feeling like getting a
Blues groove goin on, Austin “Walkin”
Cane will sing the blues and make his
guitar cry for the festival crowd on
Monday, Sept. 1 at 4:30. If you missed
Vitium at The Grog Shop or the Agora
Theater, Labor Day weekend is your shot to
check out a live performance by the funky
quintet. Don’t miss 19 year-old Nicholas
Megalis (August 30) who has been
featured on MTV’s The
Real World. Whether
he’s playing piano or
rocking his guitar,
Nicholas always knocks
the crowd off its feet.
Additional bands
performing on the local
stage at press time
include: The Broadway
Kid Adriana Holst, GForce, Kristine
Jackson, The
Refugees, Chrome
Plated Cowboys,
Tommy Wiggins and
the TRI-C All-Stars.

music and dance.
Wearing authentic
costumes to reflect their

more than 30 eateries along “Restaurant

restaurants taking part in the weekend but

One of the greatest
affordable luxuries in
life is surely the selfindulgent pleasure of the
Sunday brunch. The Beachland
Ballroom’s recently launched brunch
offers a new spin on the traditional
event combining both a unique menu
and guest DJs spinning every Sunday.
The club’s chef Kimberly Homan
has created a unique menu featuring
updated classic brunch items, plus a
generous and creative selection of
vegetarian and vegan items. Homan
has more than twenty years working in
both the back and the front of the
house. Her background in
International Studies and time spent
in Europe has clearly influenced her
eclectic, worldview of cuisine. Homan
has worked at several prominent
Cleveland area restaurants including
Velocity, Snickers, Signature of Solon,
Mark Miller’s (Coyote Café) and
nationally recognized restaurant Raku,
in Washington DC.
“My philosophy is based on creating
a menu featuring fresh, regional
products, and giving a new twist to the
classic brunch menu,” said Homan.
One of the most popular menu
items is the Crème Brulee French
toast. “We add Myers’s Rum and brown
sugar to the crème and eggs. The
Brulee-inspired topping is made with
candied burnt sugar and pralines.
Homan adds, “We serve that with fresh
fruit.”
For vegans or vegetarians, the
scrambled tofu is a special treat. Tofu
is marinated in dark soy sauce and
sesame oil and sautéed with scallions
or onions, served with a side of broccoli
and potatoes. Breakfast empanadas
are filled with eggs; steak, bacon or
sausage depending on the kitchen’s
choice; potatoes, olives, sultana raisins
served with lime sour cream on the
side. Additional menu items include
fried risotto cakes with poached eggs
and broccoli, Gaucho steak and eggs,
breakfast polenta and weekly chef’s
specials.
Each week a different Sangria is
featured. Previous weeks have
included refreshing thirteen fruit
sangria, fresh watermelon sangria,
fresh cherry sangria and others. The
bar also features house-made Bloody
Marys and a special Coffee Ice Cream
Float made with Guinness.

OK, it’s summertime and the living is
easy; we’re past due for the big
ensemble cast comedy action flick.
(Actually it’s a relief to see something
not based on a comic book hero for a
change.)
Well now, the office and writing
desk of pre modern comic duo Ann
Meara and Jerry Stiller’s prodigy
offspring, Ben Stiller, TROPIC
THUNDER fills that void.
(How was that for a sentence gang?)
The star-studded cast includes Stiller,
Matthew McConaughey, Jack Black,
Robert Downey Jr., and Nick Nolte
along with some also-rans and one big
surprise.
Remember WILD HOGS? Fake
bikers who get wrapped up in a real
biker’s adventure?
Well this is the same hook. In this case
we have a group of movie stars with
various problematic issues playing
tough as nails Nam era soldiers and
get caught up in some real jungle
combat.
Stiller is an action star on the wane

as each installment of his
“save the world” flicks
earns subsequently less
money. Black is the
star of a popular but
offensive series of
films centered on
flatulence. Oh and
he has a heroin
problem; that’s
always good for a
laugh.
Downey is the
multiple Oscar
winning method
actor who has had
medical pigmentation
augmentation that
allows him to immerse
himself in the role of a
black guy. Nolte is the rough
edged vet upon whose possibly
exaggerated exploits, the film is
based. So this movie is way over
budget and behind schedule
thanks to the group’s individual
oddities and the outrageously
overbearing vulgar and
obnoxious producer is on the
warpath.
The plan is to send the spoiled
thespians into the jungle and let
them find their way out. Not
only would it toughen them up
but also any “mishaps” along the
way would be great publicity.
The whole effect, like much of
Stiller’s writing is pretty edgy
but lacks the warm and fuzzy
feel of WILD HOGS.
That’s a two edged sword.
While I laughed out loud at
some of the harder twists
and F bombs, I didn’t get
enough empathy for the
characters. It’s not that
I’m a wuss about
vulgarity but I do want
to feel a little more for
the characters. Still, the
young audience was
laughing at all of it so you
make the call, gang.
By the way, I caught the first showing
and didn’t realize who that nasty
producer was until the credits.

MIRRORS
Fox • R • 111 min
OK gang another tradition.
This one’s billed as “The Horror
Event of the Summer!” and it’s a
particular type of horror pic of which
there are quite a few.
Of the sub genres we have the likes
of “The slasher flick starring nobody
but extras from the CW network” and
“The M Night Shamalyan annual
stinkbomb” and also “The
unintelligible remake of some surreal
Asian movie” and that, friends, is
MIRRORS.
It’s a remake of a South Korean
potboiler INTO THE MIRROR.
I try to keep from spoiling the
endings of films by writing a too
detailed plot synopsis, but in this case
even that would be hard to do since
nowhere in it does anyone quite grasp
just what the hell is going on.
Especially, it seems, the director.
As far as anyone can tell the plot
outline looks much like this:
“There are some demons or ghosts
or crazy people or something stuck in
the mirrors of the crumbling burned
out hulk of an abandoned department
store that used to be a lunatic asylum.
An ex cop (Kiefer Sutherland) has to
figure out what the bad spirits are
pissed off about and save his family. A
August 20 - September 3, 2008
whole bunch of mayhem ensues, and
then it’s over.
“The End.”
If that sounds silly, just wait ‘til
you see the flick.
Oh I could relate various sequences
of the supernatural, but none of them
have much to do with, well, whatever
this is about.
This one makes no sense even using
every inch of the suspension of reality
one takes into a theater.
Among the random and inconsistent
scenes of supernatural violence runs
the sub plot involving Sutherland
trying desperately to revive his
marriage. His obsession with the
mirrors, however, just pushes her
farther away.
I really like Kiefer Sutherland, and
I don’t blame him for this mess. I lay
this one at the feet of Alexandre Aia,
the hack who gave us the reconstituted
THE HILLS HAVE EYES.
The bottom line is this:
It isn’t scary, the effects are lame,
the events make little sense, and the
wife (Amy Smart) wasn’t pleasant
enough to garner any empathy.
As for the followers of the Big Al
scale, well even with an R rating there
was almost no nudity though the look
of the fake blood was above average.
Don’t waste your time.

Well it’s still August... no really! I’ve
survived the family reunion and my
birthday with only minor damage. A few
bumps and bruises... those canes and
walkers can really pack a wallop!
During my recovery I had an intuitive
grasp of reality, yeah I get those once in a
while and no matter what kind of grasp I
get on reality... I really hang on!
Anyways this little grasp of reality
came to me in the form of a question. My
mother asked me “Does it still hurt?” She
was of course referring to the bruise on
my shin that she lovingly placed there
with her four legged cane after I
announced that she was the winner of
the family reunions’ first annual wrinkle
contest!
I never thought for a minute that she
could lift that thing high enough to
whack me with it! “Lighten up Mom or
I’ll take back the Anti Wrinkle Cream you
won as a prize!” Sore winner, sheeze!
While rubbing my bruised shin I
started thinking about all the
conversations at the reunion and realized
that there were an awful lot of
“questions”. They started out like “How
are you?”, “What have you been doing?”
and ended up like “Why did you do

that?”, “Who invited him?”, “Can I borrow
your cane?” and “Will you throw this at
him?”
As I drifted off into the cavernous
wastelands to ponder a while, I had an
apiff... epipin... epiphin... a sudden
perception of the essential nature of
something... we humans ask a LOT of
questions! In fact we are the only species
on the planet that can ask questions. No
really!
Everywhere you go people are asking
questions there’s just no end to it! Even
when reading our mail there’s questions!
As a species I find we are addicted to
questions, we cannot go through our day
without asking at least one question, I
tried and failed miserably.
So I decided to conduct a little
experiment to count how many questions
I asked or was asked in a single day. For
three days I kept track of questions asked
whether in emails, phone calls, or face to
face conversations. The average count of
questions for a single day was 190! That’s
a lot of brain drain to have to deal with
that many questions in a single day.
Go ahead; try to go through one day
without asking any questions, betcha
can’t do it!
You have to count the questions you
ask when you’re looking in the mirror too
like “What’s that on my nose?” or “Did I
get it all?” when brushing your teeth,
those are questions.
Some people ask questionable
questions, or answer your question with
another question, how lame is that?
There are some questions that have not
changed for thousands of years like “What
the...?”, “Do I have to?”, “Why?”, or “Huh?”.
And my favorite one “Are we there yet?”
Why do kids continue to ask that
question? Isn’t it obvious that if we were
there we would want to get them out of
the vehicle as soon as possible?
By the way there were 18 questions in
this article so if you tried to get through
today without any questions you already
blew it, didn’t you?
Damn that’s 19
