LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Every generation wishes to leave the next in an improved condition. To achieve this imperative human goal, we work together
tirelessly to eliminate barriers and to create opportunities for all to succeed and flourish. The United Way of Amarillo and Canyon
is pivotal in this work in our community.
When United Way invests donor dollars in partner programs “to improve lives through the caring power of our community” we’re
investing in measurable outcomes. We are creating positive change in financial stability, health, and education not only for the
individuals and families directly served, but for all of Amarillo and Canyon. Those among us facing the greatest adversity must
receive care. It is how we ensure quality of life for the afflicted, for our entire community, and for the generation ahead.
Our investment in education positively impacts the lives of our youth by providing mentoring, academic support to improve
school performance, and training to avoid risky behaviors like drugs and teen pregnancy. Health programs serve seniors to
prevent isolation, ensure nutrition, and provide medical care. We invest in mental health counseling providing support and
alleviating desperation.
United Way investments provide low-cost child care so parents can work, adult literacy to obtain English fluency and complete
GED requirements, and job training and placement to help those in poverty and at-risk move up the economic ladder to financial
stability. In addition to prevention-focused services, United Way invests in food, shelter, and safety—ensuring the homeless, the
hungry, and the victims of domestic and sexual violence receive safety, care and compassion in the most basic of needs.
In 2015, more than thirteen thousand donors invested in the lives of over seventy-five thousand individuals in Amarillo and
Canyon. This impressive result is from direct investment by our community’s selfless individuals and businesses, as well as
the $733,270 investment from local, state, and federal grant-funded programs that support the Community Youth Development
juvenile delinquency prevention program, the Day Room for the homeless, and the 2-1-1 Texas Panhandle Information & Referral
System—all programs creating positive outcomes for our community through United Way.
Continuing to look forward, in 2016 United Way is launching a poverty prevention program because it’s not enough to
invest in the “fix” of poverty. We must prevent its root causes.
Our annual Community Status Report http://www.unitedwayama.org/community-status-report illuminates the critical issues
facing our community and informs our investments. Poverty among single heads of households and poor health behaviors are
problems we must address to effectively turn the tide and prevent needs from becoming crises in our community.
United Way will continue to use empirical data and community volunteers to raise resources and create strategies making investments to solve our most urgent needs. Ours is a community of compassion, giving, and get-it-done spirit that has for 92 years
provided positive results in Amarillo and Canyon.

Aging out of the state foster care system at 18, Cole was fending for
himself. Alone, with no family and nowhere to turn, he found refuge at
the Bruce Ford Transition Center. Now 21, he is a youth leader at
Buckner Children and Family Services, an eager volunteer for the Bruce
Ford Center, and is on track to graduate early from a 4-year university.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP
The 2015-2016 Youth Leadership Cabinet, comprised of more than
80 students representing nine local high schools and five school
districts, executed another successful youth-led campaign. The
funds raised through the Youth Campaign are donated entirely by
students from grades K-12 at campuses all across our community.
As members of the Youth Cabinet, the students allocate this money
to United Way of Amarillo & Canyon’s partner agencies.
This year, 16 applications from 13 agencies were submitted to
request project-specific funding. Students conducted program site
visits, evaluated applications, and made the funding decisions for
the money they raised. At a news conference in April, the Youth
Cabinet presented checks to each agency. United Way of Amarillo &
Canyon is proud to partner with these young adults and help teach
philanthropic principles to our future leaders.

This elegant event celebrated the accomplishments of donors and volunteers from the 2015-2016 annual
fundraising campaign. The following awards were presented:
NEWCOMER AWARD: Street Volkswagen
This award is given to the company that exemplifies the United Way spirit by conducting the most successful new
workplace campaign.
Street Volkswagen employees raised $11,901 for the 2015-2016 United Way of Amarillo & Canyon campaign; the
average gift per employee was $383.90.
SPIRIT OF THE HIGH PLAINS AWARD: Atmos Energy Corporation
This award is given to a company that has 50 or more employees and demonstrates a commitment to the United
Way mission by the number of employee donors, average employee gift, total amount raised and percentage
increase over their previous year’s campaign.
Atmos Energy Corporation had a 60% employee participation rate, their average gift was $260.87 and their total
campaign including a corporate match was $33,206.94, which was an increase of 74.91% over the 2014 campaign.
SUMMIT AWARD: Johnson & Sheldon, PLLC
This award is given to a company with fewer than 50 employees and demonstrates a commitment to the United Way
mission by the number of employee donors, average employee gift, total amount raised and percentage increase
over their previous year’s campaign.
Johnson & Sheldon, PLLC had a 77.42% employee participation rate, their average gift was $250.75 and their total
campaign including a corporate gift was $7,518, which was an increase of 73.95% over the 2014 campaign.
EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Bruckner Truck Sales, Inc.
This award is given to the company that represents the United Way spirit of excellence by conducting a workplace
campaign that results in the highest percentage increase over the previous year’s campaign.
Bruckner Truck Sales, Inc. has been a longtime supporter of United Way of Amarillo & Canyon. This year the Bruckner
employee luncheon & United Way of Amarillo & Canyon rally resulted in pledges that increased their campaign by
379.04% over their 2014 campaign.

SYBIL B. HARRINGTON LEADERSHIP AWARD: Enterprise Rent-A-Car
In the Texas Panhandle, the Harrington name is synonymous with philanthropy. Mrs. Sybil Buckingham Harrington was a generous, loving, volunteer, civic leader and
philanthropist who was a longtime supporter of the United Way of Amarillo & Canyon. Individual leadership giving ($1,000 or more per year) represents approximately
one quarter of the United Way of Amarillo & Canyon campaign. Because of her dedication to our leadership program, the United Way of Amarillo & Canyon leadership
society and leadership award honor the Sybil B. Harrington name. The Sybil B. Harrington Leadership Award is given to the company that has the highest percentage
increase in employee leadership givers over the previous year’s campaign.
Of the 24 Enterprise Rent-A-Car employee donors, 10 were leadership givers compared to 1 in 2014.
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Corky Parker is a working man, and proud to come from a long line of such. His mom volunteered through her church, his grandpa helped build oil pipelines during the
Depression, his great-grandfather was a sharecropper and his great-great-grandfather was a farmer and circuit-riding preacher. So, Corky is no stranger to hard work and
community service.
That principle took root in high school when he attended Caprock High School half the day and worked in a hot welding shop the other half. It continues today, most
recently in his work with the support of his employer, Atmos Energy, to coordinate a trap shoot to benefit United Way of Amarillo & Canyon. As the driving force behind
the May 2015 “Shoot for a Better Way to Live,” Corky spent countless hours raising money and getting sponsorships from businesses around the panhandle, welding
the firewood racks to be auctioned as part of the fundraiser and even making hand-tied keychains for the goody bags for participants.
Corky’s service to Amarillo did not begin and end there. He has worn many hats in the Texas Panhandle, whether as a volunteer sponsor for 4-H, driving the club’s
parade float in a WT homecoming parade, to being a member of Atmos’ chili-making team for the Chamber of Commerce cook-off. He is a lifetime member of Amarillo
Gun Club, and for many years served on its board of directors. Over the years, he has worked other shoots to help raise money for organizations such as Boy Scouts of
America, Potter and Randall 4-H Clubs and the American Red Cross. Corky has contributed many hours in helping The Salvation Army (for which he has even braved the
cold to serve as a Christmas bell ringer) and the NRA. He has been an avid gun-safety teacher/leader.
Corky has supported his family and taught his daughters the value of unselfish community service. He has dedicated untold time, energy, talent and personal resources
to support not only United Way, but all of Amarillo.
PRESIDENT’S SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
This award is given to Dr. Mike Hooten, Regional Dean, School of Health Professions and Assistant Vice President for Finance and Administration at Texas Tech
University Health Sciences Center-Amarillo.
Dr. Hooten has been a member of the United Way of Amarillo & Canyon’s Governing Board since 2009, and a member of the Executive Board since 2012. He served in
the role of president in 2013. While president, Mike led the board through an extensive search for an Executive Director for the organization. Mike began serving on the
UWAC Campaign Cabinet in 2008 and has continued to share his fundraising experience in this capacity. His other volunteer support includes chairing the UWAC Facilities Committee and Nominating Committee. His vast knowledge in the administrative and financial fields have been invaluable to the UWAC board. Another of Mike’s
volunteer projects has included the Guyon Saunders Resource Center where he has served for several years on the Oversight Committee and the Board of Directors. In
2015, Mike led a Task Force to determine the future of Homeless Day Shelter services in Amarillo. Mike has been actively involved for over 11 years with the State
Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC). He has held volunteer positions as an SECC Coordinator and a member of the Local Employee Committee. Volunteering is a way
of life for Mike. He never says “no” nor tires from his volunteer strengths. Mike proudly served our country with 21 years in the military, retiring as a U.S. Army Major.
Mike exemplifies the true definition of a volunteer…. Someone who gives time, effort and talent to a need or cause without profiting monetarily.
When caring hearts meet willing hands, volunteers are created, and “Great” things are accomplished. Thank you, Mike.

Community Youth Development (CYD) is a juvenile delinquency prevention program targeted to youth in
neighborhoods within the 79107 zip code. Beginning in 1996 and funded by the Texas Department of Family
& Protective Services, Amarillo’s program was among the first eleven zip codes targeted statewide by the CYD
program. Targeting is a measure of the high rate of violent juvenile crime and delinquency in a zip code area.
The Amarillo 79107 program has exceeded expectations and in 2015,
not one youth in the program became involved with the juvenile
justice system. CYD is an example of community impact and the return
on taxpayer and donor investments. CYD as prevention has been phenomenally successful and provided cost
savings to taxpayers potentially in the millions of dollars. Keeping kids out of the juvenile justice system and
on track toward productive lives as parents, neighbors, and citizens: PRICELESS.

After falling and fracturing his hip for a second time, Roy
is unable to work due to his disabilities. He receives only
a small payment from Social Security and lives below the
federal poverty level. Thanks to FoodNet, he’s able to eat
full meals that are delivered to his home. “Without these
meals, living alone would be impossible for me. I am so
grateful to still have my independence.”
