21st Annual Barbecue Cook-Off is September 8th
We are just a few days away from the biggest
event the Chamber hosts all year—the Chamber Good Times Celebration® Barbecue CookOff on Thursday, September 8th from 5pm8pm downtown on the Chamber grounds at
10th & Polk. We’ve once again lined up more
than a hundred cooking teams to serve up ribs,
brisket and all the trimmings with ice cold beverages and live music from the Buster Bledsoe
Band. Make plans to join us and have fun networking in the great outdoors. You get it all
for one price—$30 in advance at any Panhandle Ticket outlet including the Civic Center Box
Office or any area United/Amigos Supermarkets. You can also get them by phone at
806.378.3096. If you wait and get tickets at
the gate, they will be $40 each. Tickets make
great gifts for employees, VIP’s or customers,
so get some today and spread the love.

One of the best parts of my job is getting to
tell people about the Chamber or our
events in person, online, or on the air.
We are blessed to have an amazingly
supportive group of local media companies that help us spread the word. Whether it is running an article in the paper, doing a television story, running our ad, or letting us talk on the air to their radio listeners, our partnership
with the local media is invaluable. In the week-to-10-days leading up to the barbecue cook-off, I’ll have done no less than 14
different radio interviews. I’ve already done 1 television interview and YouTube interview about the event, and you’ll for sure
see me doing some Facebook Live videos next week. Good
thing I love to talk! If you happen to miss me, my message is
always some version of the same thing. Of course I tell about
the event location, date, time, ticket prices, local band and awesome food, but the most important message I share is about
why we hold the barbecue, and it typically goes something like
this…
The Chamber is giving away some great prizes in conjunction with two of our upcoming events.
In celebration of our barbecue cook-off on September 8th,
you can purchase an opportunity to win ticket for $5 each
or 5 for $20 for a chance at winning an awesome Weber
Summit® Charcoal Grill valued at $1,700 courtesy of
Boyd’s Equipment, OR you could win 2 round-trip tickets
anywhere Southwest flies valued at $800 courtesy of
Southwest Airlines. Tickets can be purchased now at the
Chamber, and if you want a closer look at this grill, it’s
currently sitting in our lobby. Be sure to check it out and
get some chances at these great prizes. Want to read
more about the cooker, check out the website at
http://bit.ly/GoodTimesBBQ.
This event is about networking. Some people love the word,
some think it’s way over-used, but we really don’t know of a
better way to say it. It’s meeting people. It’s promoting your
business. It’s about connecting with the community that you
live in, work in and raise your family in. Chances are you are
going to come to this event and run into old friends or business
associates you haven’t seen since last year’s event. Life happens...people change jobs or lose touch. Bring some business
cards or wear your company logo’ d shirt and maybe even your
nametag and smile and shake hands and chat over a rib or a
beer or an ear of corn and relax and reconnect. No one cares
you have barbecue sauce on your cheek and pepper in your
teeth, because chances are everyone else does too. That’s the
whole point.
We also tell people how this event should be treated like your
own company picnic. Why not buy some tickets and reward the
employees that work hard all year long making you look good
and keeping your business moving with an evening of fun, food
and festivities? If you make them wear a company shirt, they
are a walking billboard for your business in a crowd of 5,000
people. That’s marketing 101 right there. You get to be the
hero, and we clean up the mess when it’s all over.
I’m in awe that we have been able to continue this great tradition of barbecue and fun for 21 years now. We could not do it
without the amazing sponsors, volunteers and businesses that
come and support us year after year, and we can never say
“thank you” enough. Hopefully we will see you out here on September 8th and we can thank you in person!
As always, tell us how we are doing. Give us your suggestions,
feedback, and input. Feel free to write on our Facebook wall.
Get involved. We are proud to be YOUR Chamber.
And coming soon, we will be offering opportunity to win
tickets for 2 firearms that will be given away at our Chamber Challenge Shooting Event on September 24th. Watch
the website for more information on the Ruger and Sig
Sauer and how and where to get chances.
