Fridays 9:00am—9:00pm with exceptions
During Lent, the Blessed Sacrament will be
reposed at 6:30pm. Our regular hours of
Adoration—9 to 9—will resume after Easter.
Thank you to all who continue to participate.
Lenten Norms
Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016, and Good Friday, March
25, 2016, are days of fasting and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are
also days of abstinence.
Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older,
who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast
day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to
maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s
needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.
Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk
and juices, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On
days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health
or ability to work would be seriously affected, Church law does
not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the
Parish Priest should be consulted.
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional
disciplines of Lent. The faithful and Catechumens should
undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance
and of preparation for Initiation into the Church or the
renewal of Baptism Promises at Easter.
During the Lenten Season
there will be additional
opportunities to go to private
Confession during Stations of
the Cross. Fr. Pat or Fr. Michael will be available from 7:008:00pm and again from 8:00-9:00pm while the faithful take part in
the Stations either in English or Spanish.

serving in our country’s military. All are welcome with Service
personnel and their families especially invited to join Fr. Pat
for Stations at 5:30pm on Friday, March 18th. Lenten Supper
will follow in the Parish Hall and regularly scheduled Stations will
be held at 7:00pm in English and 8:00pm en español.

We are delighted to announce that St. Mark Parish
has exceeded their 2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal
Goal by $9,974. The total pledged to date is
$202,590 against the goal of $192,616. Since St.
Mark has a parish school, amounts beyond the goal
are shared with the parish.
Thanks to all the families that have participated to
date. We are at 35% participation and welcome all
those that may still be planning on pledging as
additional gifts will benefit the parish directly for local
needs. Also I personally thank the BAA committee
for their help in completing the work needed for the
successful 2016 campaign.

Reflection on the Faith
Paul Abbe, Director of Religious Education
910 398-6526 / [email protected]
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Richard Lane repeated these words again and again, thanking the people of St. Mark for the
warm reception he received here, and for your generosity and hospitality. And I know I speak
for Fr. Pat as well, when I add my own deepest thanks to all of you who came out mornings or
evenings for the Mission he preached for us. Richard described it as “one of the BEST Parish
Missions I have had the honor of leading, in the past 10 years. We had four GLORIOUS
days and nights …” And a special thanks to those families who invited Richard to
supper; he commented to Fr. Pat and Kyle, (whose title is hence-forth simply “LT”…), and I that
he has seldom been shown such hospitality.
In addition to the morning and evening sessions for the adults, Richard also had a very
powerful session with the 7th and 8th graders on Thursday afternoon. The comments from the
students and teachers left no doubt as to the impact his presentation had. On top of your
generous love-offerings, St. Mark Catholic School was able to donate old sets of gently-used
soccer and basketball uniforms, which we will be sending to Richard’s mission in Surinam.
Many, many thanks to Dennis Fleck for making those available for him.
“Somebody say, ‘living and visible’…”
This refrain will be familiar to anyone who attended the Mission, as Richard would make this
point each day and evening. In keeping with his theme “The Face of the Father’s Mercy”,
Richard began by reminding us that “mercy” reveals the very heart of the Holy Trinity; the
Father, out of mercy, sends His Son to take on human flesh, (“the Word became flesh and
dwelt among us”), to be the “living and visible” sign of the Father’s mercy, and the Son, out of
mercy, gives us the promise of another “Comforter” or “Counselor” who will dwell within us.
Because of this “bridge of mercy” which connects God and Man, we are called and empowered
to become the “living and visible” signs of mercy to the world. And the place where we get the
grace and strength to BE that “living and visible” sign of mercy is in the Eucharist. When we
receive the Body and Blood of Christ, WE become the “living and visible” sign of the Father’s
mercy. We must have a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus, and invite others to
share in the same.
Watch for a “Where’s Richard?” bulletin board
coming to a hallway near you!

Faith Formation News
The School Advisory Committee (SAC) for St. Mark Catholic
School (SMCS) is currently seeking a parish representative. The
SAC advises the Principal and Pastor on matters related to the
administration of SMCS. The parish representative is an integral
member of the committee which recommends policies and
procedures for the efficient operation of SMCS including plant/
facility operations, implementation of innovative instruction, and
school sponsored activities. SAC meets bi-monthly during the
school year to ensure the quality Catholic education of our
students. Members are asked to serve two years.
CLASSES WILL MEET AT THE REGULARLY
SCHEDULED TIMES THIS WEEK.
ATTENTION: Year 2 Parents
Date Change: Please mark your calendars!
The Year 2 Sacrament Prep Parent Meeting that was to
be held on Feb. 24th has been switched to March 30th.

also -from March 12th to April 2nd at 9 AM in English and
11 AM in Spanish.
First Communion Reception Help
It's that time of year (almost), when we will be celebrating First
Communions during the Easter Season. Ms. Anne is looking for
help at the receptions for the First Communicants and their
families. If you would like to help out, please contact Anne at
either [email protected] or 910 3986511.
Potential candidates should not be a parent of a current SMCS
student but have a strong, objective interest in the future of
SMCS and the flexibility to work in small groups to develop
policies and procedures. SMCS employees or their spouses are
not eligible to participate in SAC unless appointed by the Principal
or Pastor.
To obtain more information about SAC or to apply to join, please

Fifth Sunday of Lent
The Word—In faith, we always choose love.
STS (our Middle School Youth Group) meets this Wednesday,
March 16!
Jesus never judges those who truly love him. Here Jesus writes in
the sand. He knows the wind or the rain will wash away what he
has written in sand. But he knows that the words he writes
(speaks) to the hearts of the woman or the scribes and Pharisees
will stay with them forever.
FaithLife I and II (Confirmation preparation) will not meet
again until Sunday, April 3. However, please plan to join us
TONIGHT (Sunday, March 13) for adoration at 6pm!
CrossWalk (the High School Youth Group) meets this Sunday
at 6pm!
Living the Word—A Prayer Moment
Mark Your Calendars
We will be taking a group to Raleigh on Tuesday, March 22 for
the Chrism Mass at 2pm. Please contact Melissa if you are
interested! We plan to make a few other fun stops along the way
as well!
Jesus, your actions, signs and words help people have a deeper
understanding of God. Let us be open to your signs and words in
our own lives. Let us learn to direct all our actions and words to
serve you and one another. Amen.
Questions of the Week
(Please reread this week’s Gospel as a family, John 8: 1 – 11)
Children: When have you criticized or made fun of someone?
What could help you act differently?
Adults: Have you ever been too willing to ‘cast the first stone’
when you disapproved of someone’s behavior? How can you
resist these feelings?

BFL continues providing services in the area
at host facilities at Westminster Presbyterian
Church, Canebreak Senior Apartments, and
Taylor Homes. However, we are continuing
to seek new host sites as Partnership
contracts and space restrictions at the
current pantries are coming to a close.
Until “Bread for Life . . .” is settled into a new
and, hopefully, larger setting, I will not be
requesting donations for the DAILY DOZEN
essential non-food items that host churches
bless us with so generously each quarter.
We simply have no place to store the
products before we can pass them out.
BFL is still looking for administrative level
volunteers/managers and assistants as well
as any number of other job descriptions
such as volunteer coordinator, finance
administrator, and special projects
coordinator. Please call me if you are
interested in investing your volunteer time
with this ministry.
As we enter into deeper personal reflection
and prayer during this Lenten Season, I
hope we will all spend some time
considering the plight of the hungry elderly
poor. Thank you for your ongoing food
donations each week. It means so much to
those we serve. The entire “Bread for Life .
. .” staff and I wish you a blessed Easter
Season.
