IN THE ALPES-MARITIMES
KEY FIGURES – TRENDS – INVESTMENT... THE CHALLENGES
4 5
The Alpes-Maritimes ski resorts will be open from the beginning
of December 2011 to mid-April 2012. This Department (c.f.
English county), with its 15 resorts including 3 international ones
(Isola 2000 – Auron and Valberg), pays special attention to the
development of its mountain areas so as to ensure rapid access,
top-quality skiing and the provision of other activities for nonskiing snow lovers.
News 2011/2012
Isola 2000 will celebrate its 40th birthday and the Mayor of Nice
may announce the candidature of the capital of the French
Riviera for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
As for the resorts, they continue their development
programmes, particularly in the skiing areas. Professionals
specializing in mountain tourism aim to provide top-quality
services so that mountain sports – from skiing to walking and
all non-skiing activities – can take place in the best conditions.
Skiing for pleasure and skiing for everyone for successful
holidays and amazing scenery from the sea to the mountains!
This is what the Alpes-Maritimes can offer.

TRENDS
SKI PASSES:
ADVANCED PURCHASES AND HANDS-FREE!
Resorts in the Alpes-Maritimes have opted to sell ski lift
passes on-line, so saving holiday makers a great deal of time.
They are also promoting hands-free ski passes.
NEW IN AURON & ISOLA 2000!
“FAMILLE PLUS MONTAGNE” LABEL
(FAMILY + MOUNTAIN)
“Famille Plus Montagne” is the one and only national label
relating to the reception of families with
children and the services offered them in
French tourist districts. It is recognized
by the Ministry of State for Tourism. Its
aim is to do everything possible to meet
the needs of families with children over 18
months staying in mountain resorts by improving facilities and
services in the resorts as well as identifying them more clearly.
Worth knowing. At Valberg, child-care provision is made for
children from 3 months old!
What do “Famille Plus Montagne” resorts offer? Everything!
The undertakings of “Famille Plus Montagne” accredited
resorts are summarized in a 6-point charter:
- Customized reception for families
- Activities suited to different ages
- Tailored rates - from the youngest to the oldest
- Activities for children and adults to take part in together or
separately
- A local medical service
- Children carefully looked after by professionals
Valberg has already been using hands-free passes for
several years.

SKI LIFTS: QUICKER
AND MORE COMFORTABLE!
This year, ski lifts have been improved by the acquisition of new
equipment such as detachable chairlifts with up to 6 places,
and cable cars so as to make the best use of the ski area (more
runs served by fewer ski lifts and greater comfort for skiers).
FAMILIES FIRST!
MOUNTAIN ACTIVITIES
ESCAPE AND THRILLS!
Adults are always looking for new adventures. That’s why the
Alpes-Maritimes organize more and more activities which will
appeal to adults seeking something different in the mountains:
• Speed flying
• Paraskiing
• Initiation into Laser Biathlon
• AirBoard
• Night in an Igloo
• Snakegliss
• Ski joëring
• Ice Falls
• Sled Dogs
• Ski bikes
• Ruissling (walking up frozen streams)
• Snowshoeing
• Snowscoot
And not forgetting motorized sports –snowmobile outings, ice
racing, snow quads...
Throughout the department, more and more space is being
given to snowshoeing, which has the advantage of being a
gentle sport, open to everybody and giving opportunities to
explore nature and wildlife, with or without a guide.
ACCOMMODATION
All the economic players in the Department are involved in
classifying existing accommodation and are working to ensure
that structures likely to invest in the High-Mountain areas are
attractive.
Today, a great deal of work is being done on describing and
extending charters (“Qualité tourisme”, “Famille +”, ecofriendly labels, “Gîtes de France”…).
Children, who are bursting with energy, shouldn’t be left out on
family holidays. French mountain resorts organize special
activities for children of all ages. Great attention is paid to
safety, and activities are led by mountain professionals.
Following on from educational areas devoted to the very young
(Piou Piou clubs), French ski schools have developed the “Kids
Park”, intended to teach young skiers "freestyle" in suitable,
safe conditions.

MAJOR
INVESTMENTS
The Alpes-Maritimes “Conseil Général” plays an important role
in the development of the department’s ski resorts for many
reasons: maintaining employment in the mountain districts;
preserving the complementary nature of economic activity
between the coast and the hinterland, which contributes to the
harmony and cohesion of the area; the need to establish
durable conditions for the development and operation of ski
areas in the various resorts.
Nearly 168 million Euros have been invested in order to provide
greatly improved equipment in the department’s resorts. 5
joint associations have been set up, grouping together 7
resorts: Gréolières and L’Audibergue, La Colmiane, Mercantour
(Auron, Isola 2000), Roubion and Valberg, 90% financed by the
‘Conseil Général’.
The extent and quality of improvements carried out in the ski
areas, especially as far as ski lifts and snow making are
concerned (44 million Euros invested since 2004 to guarantee
snow coverage), make up for lack of snow and the resorts are
now able to attract an international clientele.
In 2011: investments in the pipeline total €18.5 M and the AlpesMaritimes “Conseil General” has contributed €12.7 M to the
joint associations.
Works carried out in 2010:
> Acquisition of a chairlift for “La Colmiane” (Génisserie Isola
2000)
> Bringing up to standard the ski lifts at Isola 2000, Auron,
Gréolières-Les-Neiges, L’Audibergue and Valberg
> Purchasing equipment for ski runs, refurbishing runs and
signposting in all the resorts
> Acquisition of a piste-basher at L’Audibergue, Isola 2000 and
Valberg
> Completion of the construction of the chairlift from Valette
to Isola 2000
> Completion of the construction of the hillside dam for
covering the Demandols sector with snow
> Facelift for the runs at the “Sommet de la Croix du Sapet”,
the “Tête du Sapet” and the “Oursons” at Valberg
> Replacing the chairlift at the "Pic à la Colmiane"
> Installation of artificial snow at L’Audibergue
Investments scheduled for 2011-2012:
> Acquisition of a piste basher at La Colmiane, Auron and
Valberg
> Modifying the ski tow "Le Conquet" at La Colmiane
> Bringing up to standard the ski lifts at Auron, Valberg,
Gréolières-Les-Neiges and Roubion
> Installing hands-free equipment in the resorts in Mercantour
(Isola – Auron)
> Increasing snow coverage in the Demandols sector and
connecting up the hillside dam at Auron for the 2011-2012
season
> Purchasing equipment for ski runs, refurbishing the runs and
signposting in all the resorts

THE PRESS
“Wide open spaces, no queuing for the chairlifts, slopes
studded with larch and panoramic views over the valleys...
Welcome to the Alpes-Maritimes ski runs where you will find
a convivial and unexpected ski area on the edge of the
Mercantour. This is the charm of the French Riviera resorts.
They offer snow and blue skies only one hour from Nice and far
from the hurly-burly of the ski factories. It is true that these
ski areas do not claim to compete with their Savoyard
neighbours. But they have installed the infrastructure needed
to attract families and even experienced skiers for a weekend.”
Marion Tours - Le Point (March 2011)
“When the French Riviera turns white.
Famous all over the world for it sun-drenched beaches and 5star luxury hotels, the French Riviera also attracts many
tourists in winter looking for ski resorts on a human scale,
attractive accommodation, regional country cooking and a
preserved natural setting.”
Alexandre Analis - Commerce International (March 2011)
“Ski in the Mercantour facing the Mediterranean.
Only one hour from Nice and the coast, there is another “French
Riviera” to explore in the Mercantour - walking and skiing,
looking down on the blue of the Mediterranean.”
Pierre Come - Le Centre Presse (March 2011)
“And the sun as well.
Auron, Valberg, Isola 2000: each resort has its own style.
Snow or sun? It’s better to have both! In the Alpes-Maritimes,
where 80% of the surface is mountainous, Auron, Valberg and
Isola 2000 are ski areas equal to those in the Northern Alps.
Each resort is different. You can alternate walks on snowshoes
with cross-country or downhill skiing. There is time to admire
nature in all its beauty on the edge of the Mercantour. Nose in
the air, you can follow the flight of a bird of prey as it circles in
the sky. In the distance, the winter light is reflected in a giant
mirror. It’s the Mediterranean waving to us in the sun.”
Claire Fleury - Le Nouvel Observateur (November 2009)
“The South of France - feet in the snow.
Head in the sun, eyes on the sea; one foot on the mountain, the
other in the sea. You must admit it’s tempting. It’s certainly
possible and it’s not so far as all that. Under 4 hours from
Montpellier by car, straddling the French Riviera and the
Mercantour, the Alpes-Maritimes resorts are waiting for you...
So, don’t deny yourself the pleasure of trying out all sorts of
ski activities in wide open spaces.”
Jean-Loup Robertier - Midi Libre (February 2009)
“Focus on contrasts
Perched at over 1600 m above sea level, the Mercantour
resorts attract a family clientele looking for ski areas on a
human scale.”
Yannick Vernini - Est Magazine (April 2009)
“The French Riviera and its mountains.
Skiing in winter on the French Riviera? You might think it is a
ludicrous idea. However, less than 100 km from Nice, the
resorts near the Mercantour Alpine National Park don’t need
to feel jealous of their more northerly competitors.”
Hubert Letz - Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (January 2011)

“Skiing on the French Riviera.
It’s one of the best kept secrets on the French Riviera.
Take a walk along a beach and two hours later go skiing in the
Alps! This is one of the most appealing features of the French
Riviera and one of the least-known.”
Thierry Joly - www.expatway-magazine.com (March 2011)
“The Mercantour resorts.
Only 3 hours from Paris and under 1 hour 30 minutes from Nice
airport, the Mercantour resorts have a staggering variety of
scenery and all sorts of activities. Snow-covered, sunny, sporty
and family-friendly, entertaining and traditional, they have
something to please everybody.”
Julien Magot - www.info-travel.fr (March 2011)
“Skiing on the French Riviera.
Set off for the French Riviera with your down jacket? You will
need it at Valberg, Auron and Isola 2000, major ski resorts
located under an hour and a half from Nice. The three of them
show another face if the French Riviera. Instead of palm trees,
there are forests of larches or pines. The excellent Nice cuisine
also serves all the mountain specialities. Lastly, the snow is
every bit as good as that of the resorts in the Northern Alps
this winter (…). Apart from the blue sky, all is white. Here,
white and blue go very well together.”

4TH “PISTES ELECTRONIQUES”
“Les Pistes Electroniques” is an event which brings
together the spirit of board sports and
emerging electronic trends - three
“white” days snowboarding and two
“blue” nights of music at Isola 2000,
regional snowboarding capital.
“Les Pistes Electroniques” takes the
successful Cannes “Plages Electroniques” concept and
transposes it to Isola 2000. Drawing on the many
advantages of this Mercantour resort, the festival will be
made up of musical and sporting activities all weekend, on
the snow front and in the ski area during the day and in the
resort’s clubs and bars in the evenings.
Armed with experience gained from the organisation of
four “Plages Electroniques” festivals, (57,000 spectators
in 2009), the Kids Snowboard French Championships, the
management and promotion of Back to Back, top
snowboard club in the Southern Alps, and the
establishment of the freestyle commission, the
organisers now hope to offer the 06 public a convivial,

Happy birthday!

PARK
BI O
International resort with the best snow coverage
in France in recent years, Isola 2000 has 120 km
of ski runs between 1800 and 2610 m above sea
level. Its ski area is 80% covered by artificial
snow.
A LITTLE HISTORY
Isola 2000 was inaugurated in 1972.
The project was mooted in 1947, after the Second World War,
due to the existence of the Italian military route which linked
Isola with Vinadio via the Col de la Lombarde on the new
border.
The adventure began when an Englishman discovered the
beauties of Chastillon and decided to establish a winter
sports’ resort there. The idea gained ground until 1964, when
the local council adopted the idea of creating a winter sports’
resort.
SKI AREA
•
120 km of ski runs
43 runs - 4 black, 11 red, 21 blue and 7 green.
20 ski lifts – 2 cable cars, 10 ski tows, 7 chairlifts and 1
funicular.
1 hillside dam: 150 000m3.
430 snow cannons – area covered: 120 hectares.

Boardercross on the Mouflon run.
The resort is equipped with high-performance
installations for snowboarding.
SNOWPARK “TONY’S SNOWLAND” AT ISOLA 2000
Named after the bronze medallist at the Vancouver Olympic
Games, this snowpark is entertaining and aesthetic. The area
is unique in terms of identity and visibility as it has been
moved to the centre of the ski area.
Modules are available for all levels: half-pipe / Slopestyle /
Big air / Zone de jib / Beginners area.
On the Mouflon run, Boardercross is the focus for a great
many National and European competitions and lends itself to
intense and entertaining boarding moments.

THE SNOW CLUB
WITH THE MOST MEDALS
IN FRANCE:
BACK TO BACK
Back to Back was set up in 1991, in Nice, by a group
of friends who had a passion in common which, at the
time, was more a way of life than a sport. Initially an
association for board sports in general, it later
specialized in snowboarding. Good riders appeared
quickly and, thanks to the club, they were able to travel
to competitions and win a great number of medals. The
nucleus of the precursors of snowboarding met up at
Isola 2000. It’s there that snowboarding started and the
first snowparks made their appearance.
In 1994, the Club set up an Alpine section, allowing it to
become the largest snowboarding club in France. In the
course of time, Back to Back has numbered
snowboarding directors among its members as well as
several of the early national and international
champions including Tony Ramoin who finished 3rd in
the final at Vancouver 2010 (event: snowboardcross).
The organization has become more professional and
members follow many training courses (Judges,
Monitors, Technical Directors) allowing it to organize
regional and national competitions, including the
French Championships in 1995 and 1996, and to develop
this new board sport. Isola 2000 is, today, a benchmark
resort in the snowboarding world.
A bio-park is a snowpark located in a natural environment, in
the trees, with wooden obstacles. The course consists of 8
wooden modules hidden in the forest. Over 140 m long with 12
modules and 3500m².

AURON
TECHNOLOGY
AND AUTHENTICITY
> www.auron.com
A village resort, Auron has the largest ski area in
the department with 135 km of ski runs. It
combines pleasure and technology
The central village square, with shops, boutiques
and bars, is the meeting point for skiers.
A LITTLE HISTORY
In the Old Provencal language, Aura means air and wind.
Without doubt, the name Auron comes from the light breeze
which blows almost all the time on the plateau. For centuries,
the Auron plateau was used for cultivation and grazing by the
inhabitants of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée.
At the beginning of the 20th Century, the only “foreigners” to
come here were soldiers on manoeuvres and a few skiers. It
was not until 1931 that a road suitable for motor vehicles
linked Saint Étienne and Auron. At that time, two large resorts
began to install cable cars - Megève, in France and Sestrières,
in Italy.
Inspired by this example, the Alpes-Maritimes “Conseil
Général” decided to finance the same equipment in BeuilValberg and Auron. In 1934, Auron hosted its first skiing
competition. Its first cable car (the third in France) was
inaugurated on 30 January 1937. It transported 25 people at
the amazing speed of 2 metres per second!
In 1938, Auron was host for the 27th French Championships but
the war put the resort into such a deep sleep that it did not
really wake up until thirty years later.
From 1960 onwards, the clientele tripled but the equipment
did not keep pace.
The opening of nearby Isola 2000 in 1971 led to Auron’s revival.
This rebirth was so spectacular and well thought out that,
since 1979, the resort has hosted the French men’s and
women’s Alpine ski Championships three times. The resort
has celebrated 70 years of skiing and today boasts 135 km of
runs.

A LITTLE HISTORY
A LITTLE HISTORY: THE CRADLE OF SKIING IN THE ALPESMARITIMES
From 1909 onwards, le Chevalier Victor de Cessole began to discover
the winter potential of Beuil. In 1910, the Alpes-Maritimes ski club held
its first sporting competition and the resort organized speed and
cross-country races, jumping, freestyle and even tobogganing
competitions.
On 9 March 1930, Beuil inaugurated the ski jump at Launes.
Competitors jumped from 30 to 50 m.
In 1931 and 1932, the Chamonix-Beuil long-distance trek crossed the
Alps by the high passes in just over 10 days.
On 21 February 1937, a new Olympic ski-jumping record of 58 m was set.
Today, the ski runs at Beuil form an entity with those of Valberg. The
Beuil/Valberg ski area extends over more than 130 km of Alpine and
Nordic ski runs. In parallel, Beuil groups together all its Nordic skiing
activities at the Launes centre. Activities include cross-country skiing,
orienteering, ski touring and snowshoeing. Organisers of the European
Ski-Jumping Championships in 1996 and equipped with a ski school, the
resort organizes the annual “Grand Prix de ski de Beuil”.

SPECIAL HIKE LEAVING FROM THE
RESORT
For experienced sportsmen and women.
Leaving from the resort equipped with skis or
snowshoes, it is possible to climb the breathtaking
ridge of Mont Mounier following ancestral paths and
contemplate the grandiose panoramic views.
Mont Mounier is located in the Alpine chain in the
Mercantour Massif. The name of the mountain literally
means “Black Mountain”.
Made up of layers of black marl, the mountain can be
recognized easily by its isolated position and long ridge.
On the latter and a kilometre west of the summit, is a
secondary summit, ‘Le Petit Mounier (2,727 m). In 1893,
an observatory was built there by Raphaël
Bischoffsheim, founder of the Nice Observatory. Twice
destroyed by fire and rebuilt, it was also used as a CAF
(French climbing club) refuge from 1927 to 1940 and
then abandoned because of the climatic conditions.
Only the ruins can still be seen.
Because of rocky ridges, Mounier is only accessible by
following the ridge from ‘Le Col de Crousette’ (2,480 m)
on the GR 5 route. One first reaches Le Petit Mounier,
then the summit by an aerial path. The panoramic view
of the region, and in clear weather of an area from
Corsica to the Swiss Alps, is exceptional.

Discover historical and religious sites

“You go into a church built around 1000 A.D. by the
Benedictine monks from Pedona Abbey, Borgo San Dalmazzo.
Constructed on a basilica plan, the church originally had only a
central crypt. The crypts on the north and south were not added
until around 1100-1150, when the priory received the distinguished
Sainte Croix relic.
The church therefore took the name “église dédiée à l’Invention
de la Sainte-Croix” (church dedicated to the finding of the true
cross). At that time situated in the centre of the Saint-Dalmas
priory, only one religious building remains today.
It was restored several times in the course of the 16th and 17th
Century. The building as we know it today, listed in 1943, is marked
by two important architectural periods – First Romanesque and
Baroque.”

ALPHA
THE MERCANTOUR WOLF PARK
Alpha, the Mercantour wolf park, came into being through a desire
to acquaint the general public with all aspects of the age-old
confrontation of wolves and Man. However, “Alpha” – the
international name for the dominant couple in a wolf pack – is not
just another reserve of wolves in captivity.
It is an animal park in a grandiose setting with staging which is so
original that it is unlike any other in the world.
First of all, the visitor watches three Scénovisions®, each lasting
around 20 minutes. They are shown in the magnificent setting of the
renovated former cowsheds. These shows highlight various people,
shepherds, scientists and forest wardens, whose work brings them
into contact with wolves, albeit for very different reasons.
Accompanied by one of these people, an animal behaviour
specialist, visitors are taken to an “initiation” area and then to meet
the wolves in another part of the park.

Roure, a medieval village located 1100 metres above

(altitude from 1000 m to 1700 m), with a collection of broadleaved and coniferous trees from mountain areas all over
the world as well as collections of maples, old varieties of
fruit trees, wild roses, house-leeks, without forgetting the
“Chalet de l’Arbre” with its “Carpothèque” (collection of fruit
from coniferous trees) and xylotheque (collection of wood for
the use of cabinet makers).
Small waterfalls for birds and unique ornithological walk.
Exhibition “L’Art et l’Arbre”.
The only European arboretum with an Art connection, the
Roure Arboretum has mounted an exhibition of the work of
many artists who have put a lot into this timeless spot.
In fact, No-Made* brings together artists who have left the
galleries behind to come to create their works on a different
theme each year in the biggest open air art gallery: the Roure
Arboretum. Their creative paths link the sea to the mountain,
the customs’ paths of the “Villa Roc Fleuri Cap d’Ail”
(installation in September) to the mule tracks of the Roure
arboretum (first Sunday of October).
The site has become the base camp of “no-made” and the
artists put their works into Nature’s hands so that it, in its
turn, can re-sculpt them with the snow, hail, rain and sun that
the seasons bring.
Famous “Ambassadors” herald “No-Made” each year - Ben,
Jean-Michel Folon, Ernest Pignon Ernest, Valerio Adami,
Ousmane Sow, Nicolas Lavarenne…

A stone’s throw from “Le Col de Turini“, l’Authion and la Pointe

L’Authion was considered to be the keystone of the AlpesMaritimes defensive system by French military leaders. So,
after 1880, strategic roads were opened, the forts at La
Forca, Mille-Fourches (1883), the camp at Cabanes Vieilles
(1890) and the redout at Trois Communes (1898) were built.
Today, only the ruins of the forts and barracks remain, but
they are still very spectacular because of their number, their

particularity of forming a real balcony on the ridge top,
looking down over the French Riviera, with views of the Isles
des Lérins, the coast, the Var and the Alpine range.
1400 to 1650 m.
In 2009, the ski lifts were entirely renovated, the piste
maintenance fleet enlarged and the ski area refurbished, with
artificial snow coverage over 1.5 hectares. Providing artificial
snow coverage for the low ski tow and the Lavandes
beginners’ run, allows skiing lessons to continue when there
is a lack of snow.

HANDISKI
ACTION IN SUPPORT
OF PEOPLE
WITH REDUCED MOBILITY
In 2001, the Alpes-Maritimes “Conseil Général” launched
“Handiski”, which enables people with reduced mobility to go
skiing in comfort and safety.
The “Conseil Général” bought 8 tandem skis costing €42,000
(Auron, Isola 2000, La Colmiane and Valberg), a dual ski and a
ski kart, intended to be used without charge by people of
reduced mobility. On 25 February 2011, it bought a 9th tandem
ski (€5,590).
In order to handle them, an operator’s license is essential. The
department, therefore, finances a 9-day training session each
year, open to volunteers and professionals alike, who become
qualified operators (cost per training session: €,10,000).
Nearly 50 operators trained in 4 years and around 500
beneficiaries in 2009/2010.
