It also signals the winding down of season, and this has been a season like no other here at The Club at Ibis. We completed our Capital Improvement Project in the fall, just as season was about to begin, and our members were able to finally experience the brand new facilities from top to bottom. If you have ever built your own home, you know that there is always a period of adjustment to get the “bugs” worked out, and The Club is no different – it is just a much bigger “house,” and it takes a little longer to get comfortable and find the best way to settle in to our new and different world and surroundings. I do hope you will take a moment to thank our Board of Directors, the LongRange Planning Committee, and the many others who were critical to the success of this project. They tackled a monstrous job, and through their tireless hours of time and amazing dedication, The Club at Ibis is now one of the best clubs anywhere and can even sport the title of “Distinguished Emerald Club of the World.” We have so much to be proud of and thankful for. As you contemplate your summer plans, we are busy here at the Club organizing events and special dining options for our members who call Ibis “home” all year-round. While we would like to be able to provide our members with all of the offerings and venue openings that we do in season, it would clearly not be fiscally responsible. We are committed to member satisfaction all year long and will continue to bring you great events and dining opportunities to enjoy at the service level you have come to expect. If you are a golfer, we will, once again, have over 40 area clubs participating in the Reciprocal Program this year. Be sure to take advantage of this and get out and visit other clubs and courses. We always look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions when you return. As they say, “the best compliment is imitation,” so let us know if you come across a great idea that Ibis may wish to “adopt.” Our courses have experienced a challenging winter with the inconsistent weather – it’s either too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry this winter. Even the USGA agrees that it has been one of the most difficult years in history. Our summer cultural practices will be extremely important to maintain and preserve these valuable assets that make Ibis the premier club that it is. In addition, this summer, we will begin redoing the greenside bunkers to afford our golfers an even better experience, which will be scheduled during regular cultural practices whenever possible. Tennis play will slow down some over the hotter months, but, since their opening, we have been pleased with the additional play on the two new tennis courts, as well as the four new pickleball courts. Our Junior Summer Camp is filling up again and it’s always a great time to watch our future Ibis sports enthusiasts get a little extra practice while having fun. To keep you healthy, fit, and relaxed, a variety of Fitness Classes will be ongoing throughout the summer months, along with our BodyMind Connection efforts to bring you interesting lectures. Then, relax at The Spa with one of our many special treatments. Be sure to enjoy some sun and fun poolside. It’s the perfect place to spend the lazy days of summer. For the socially active, don’t miss the Rocket Man Show, and a variety of games to show off your skills, including Bingo, Trivia Challenge, and Name that Tune. We have a variety of special events with dining headed your way with Easter Brunch, Seder Dinner, Mother’s Day Brunch, and a Father’s Day Special at The Bistro. These are special family times, so be sure to watch the updates and make your reservations early. We will continue with Candlelight Dinners in Panache, a Wine Reception, and our fabulous Seafood Feast Dinner Buffet (there will be food for the landlubbers, too). The Club at Ibis is new and exciting. We want you to create the Ibis Experience™ as only you can by enjoying your beautiful surroundings while doing all of the things you love. Happy Spring! Sincerely, Stephen J. LoGiudice General Manager “The Club at Ibis is now one of the best clubs anywhere and can even sport the title of “Distinguished Emerald Club of the World.” We have so much to be proud of and thankful for.” APRIL • MAY • JUNE 2016 3 Golf Ibis Pro-Member Summer Series Greetings from The Club at Ibis Golf Staff Monday, May 23 5:00 p.m. Pairings Party Last summer, we introduced a summerlong event for the Ibis Golf Professionals and Ibis members. We had such great participation that we wanted to continue this new tradition into the summer of 2016. Teams of members who sign up will play a round of golf with a selected professional throughout the summer months. During the Pairings Party, the Tournament Staff will randomly assign a The 2015 - 2016 golf season just flew by this year. It is hard to believe that April is already here, and the South Florida season is about to come to a close. Your Club had a lot of exciting things happening this year that included the Grand Opening of the Clubhouse with Jack Nicklaus in attendance for the Ribbon Cutting, along with celebrating our 25 year anniversary. Ibis members were also very excited to show off their brand new Club with the return of Member-Guest events for men, women, and couples. Golf Professional for you to play with. At the end of the summer, we will calculate the lowest team net score from each golf course to determine the winners. The entry fee of $50.00 per player includes a gift for playing, the receptions at the beginning and end of the summer, along with prizes that will be awarded at the end of the summer. Stay tuned to your weekly Golf & Greens emails for more information on how and when to sign up for this competitive (but enjoyable) summer-long event. Summer Golf Leagues Even though we’re coming up on the summer months, the temperatures are not the only things that are going to be heating up. As always, we will be offering Junior Camps and Mixed 9 & Dine events. We also look to introduce and bring back some classic golf game competitions to boost participation for events in the summer. Check out the summer calendar that includes a wide variety of fun golf activities. 4 APRIL • MAY • JUNE 2016 Besides all of the golf events here at Ibis, there are also Leagues and Associations that Ibis is a part of that give you an opportunity to play at and compete against other local clubs in Palm Beach County. Well, your Ibis Golf Staff is looking to do a similar format during the summer and get back to the way golf games used to be established. We want to boost your weekly golf game with friends and provide a traditional golf experience to enhance some friendly competition among members. Stay tuned to the Golf & Greens weekly email for more information on these classic golf games. Play with the Staff - Summer 2016 Back by popular demand are our Play-with-the-Staff events. We look forward to having the opportunity to spend some time with our members on the course beginning in May and continuing throughout the summer months. These events have continued to be enjoyable experiences where staff and members come together to share a day playing the game that we all love. All Play-with-the-Staff events begin at 8:30 a.m. and are played on one Thursday of each month through September on the following dates: May 12 June 23 July 21 August 18 September 22 APRIL • MAY • JUNE 2016 5 Golf Pro’s Corner If you’re like most people who play golf, eventually you find yourself under a tree, faced with a shot that requires an abbreviated backswing. You take a couple of shortened practice swings and figure you’re ok. You think, “I’ve got this shot.” You take The Half Swing By Bob Olson, PGA your swing and hit the tree branches, swing and hit a bad shot, or worse yet, miss the ball completely. That happens. You end up making a bigger swing than the practice swing. The most likely reason for this is you probably never practice that shot with a shortened swing. If you’re Summer Aerification Schedule To help keep our courses looking their very best, below is the maintenance schedule for each golf course throughout the summer. Legend Course Closed Monday, April 25 – Sunday, May 22 Monday, July 18 – Sunday, August 14 Tradition Course Closed Monday, May 23 – Sunday, June 19 Monday, August 15 – Sunday, September 11 Heritage Course Closed Tuesday, June 21 – Sunday, July 17 Monday, September 12 – Sunday, October 9 like most of us, you try to squeeze a bit more out of the shot than you should. Here’s a way you can practice that shot and have fun at the same time. Go to the south end of the range to the T.O.P. area. (T. O. P. stands for Target Oriented Practice). That’s the area where the nets are located. Most of us use this area just for our shorter irons and to practice full swings. Try this the next time you’re out there: Pick one of the target nets; pick a club to use. Then, imagine that you’re under a tree. Make a swing that will get the shaft of the club no higher than ground level on both your backswing and forward swing. Concentrate on good ball contact, not distance. You’ll see that the ball doesn’t go as far as you might have thought it would. That’s ok. Hit a few shots with this swing. Now, switch clubs. If you used a wedge on the first few shots, switch to a 7-iron. Make the same swing, getting the shaft of the club level with the ground. Concentrate on solid ball contact. Do this same routine with a couple of other clubs. A couple of things will probably happen. First, your ball contact should improve. Second, you’ll develop a “feel” for the shortened swing and how far the ball goes using different clubs with the same swing. The next time you find yourself under a tree, you’ll have the confidence to hit the shot that you need to. Play well and have fun. 6 APRIL • MAY • JUNE 2016 Summer Hole-in-One Club The Ibis Hole-in-One (HIO) Club has been a fabulous addition to our club programs. Being able to win money with one swing of the club makes it all that more exciting when we make an ace! If you signed up and were a member of the HIO Club from November 1, 2015 – May 31, 2016, and wish to participate in this program over the summer, you will have to sign up for the summer season. This will be a club within a club and is open to all Ibis golf members. The Summer HIO Club will run from June 1, 2016 – October 31, 2016. Any golf member of the HIO Club who makes an ace during this time frame will be eligible for the HIO benefits. Both the primary and dependent golf member must sign up for the HIO Club for both to be eligible for the HIO benefits. To sign up for the HIO Club, contact the Golf Shop at (561) 625-8500, Ext. 2381. Knitting for Charity The V.A. Hospital held its winter communal baby shower for expectant vets in late February. All of the women participating in this event had served in the military and received pre- and postnatal services at our neighborhood facility. About 35 moms were invited to attend and enjoy the fun and excitement of the event although some were called away by their little ones’ arrivals. Many lovely gifts were donated by the Ibis Cultural Association’s Knitting for Charity participants, Ibis Friends of Vets, and other area community organizations. Members of the Ibis community have been supporters of this thoughtful and generous event since its inception seven years ago. Our community provides each new mom with hand knitted baby blankets, sweaters, hats and booties made by Ibis volunteers. Treat bags of Sheila G’s cookies, door prizes of nursery artwork created by Ibis artists, boxes of diapers donated by residents of Ibis, and two baby stroller door prizes provided by Ibis Friends of Vets added fun and excitement to this wonderful event. Thanks to so many generous and thoughtful members of our community, all of the moms-to-be headed home with arms full of useful and lovely gifts to welcome their newborns. APRIL • MAY • JUNE 2016 23 8225 Ibis Boulevard West Palm Beach, Florida 33412 Going Green at Ibis You may not realize it, but recycling, conservation, and other eco-friendly “green” efforts are already implemented around The Club at Ibis. Below are a few programs and information about their impact. Keep an eye out for other environmentally-responsible programs that are scheduled to launch later this year at Ibis! Golf Maintenance Water Conservation • Ibis uses water pumped from the lakes on property to irrigate our three 18-hole golf courses. Ibis is allocated 410.67 million gallons annually for all three golf courses and the driving range as dictated by the South Florida Water Management District. This does not include areas that are watered and maintained by Ibis POA. • Simply watering at night to replace the evapotranspiration lost during the day is not a practice used at Ibis. Instead, we use a more effective means; regularly check the soil moisture and turf vigor to determine when and how much water is needed. Additionally, Ibis utilizes a rain shutoff sensor on the weather station that will turn off the irrigation computer if we receive rain. • Last year, Ibis pumped a total of 338 million gallons of water for the golf courses and driving range, more than 72 million gallons under the allotment provided by the Water District. This is evidence of the effectiveness of Ibis’s water conservation methods. 24 APRIL • MAY • JUNE 2016 Tennis Hydration Station/Water Cooler • With the opening of The CORE in 2014, The Club at Ibis made a significant stride towards becoming more environmentally-conscious. Hydration station water coolers at the Tennis & Fitness Center were installed in lieu of offering plastic water bottles to members and guests. In 2015, this single action has saved almost 20,000 water bottles. That is equivalent to roughly 830 cases of bottled water, or $2,980. Lighting • The majority of the rooms in The CORE and the redesigned Clubhouse are equipped with motionactivated lights, which automatically switch off after a period of inactivity in the room. LED lighting is presently used throughout Ibis, as well. LED lighting uses approximately 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent lighting. It also lasts 35 to 50 times longer than incandescent lighting and two to five times longer than florescent lighting. Cooking Oil •All used cooking oil is disposed into designated containers located in the loading docks. The containers are emptied by Green Star Biodiesel, a company that collects the used cooking oil and recycles it into bio-diesel fuel. As part of the service, Green Star offers complimentary cleaning of our grease traps, as needed (approximately two to four times per year). This is a savings of about $5,000 annually.
