dressing room and behind the scenes, The Flyers at 50 celebrates fifty years of the unique hockey
organization’s triumphs, trials and everything in between. From the campaign to gain an NHL
franchise in 1965, through the building of a hard-hitting Stanley Cup championship roster that
performed at its best after Kate Smith's thundering rendition of "God Bless America" ...from the
tragic loss of goaltending great Pelle Lindbergh to the controversy-strewn signing of mega-star Eric
Lindros ... from the first shovel in the ground to build the Spectrum to 1996-97's Eastern Conference
Championship season in the new CoreStates Center ... from the Leach-Barber-Clarke line to the

Howe led the Red Wings to four Stanley Cups, won six Hart Trophies as the league’s most valuable
player and won six Art Ross Trophies as the NHL’s top scorer. When he retired in 1980, he held the
NHL records for regular-season goals (801), assists (1,049), points (1,850). In this tribute to the
legendary Red Wing that features nearly 100 images, the Detroit Free Press reflects on Howe’s life in

More and more fans are watching the NHL each week, but many of them don’t know exactly what
they should be watching. How does an offense create shooting lanes for its best sniper? When a
center breaks through and splits between two defensemen, which defender is to blame? Why does a
goalie look like a Hall of Famer one week and a candidate for the minor leagues the next? This
guide for sports fans on how to watch and appreciate the game of hockey takes you inside a coach’s
mind as he builds a roster or constructs a game plan, to the chaos of the goalie’s crease, and deep
into the perpetual chess match between offense and defense. Discussing topics such as what to look
for when a team goes on the power play and why playing center might be the most grueling job in
sports, Take Your Eye Off the Puck shows fans how to get the most out of watching their favorite sport.

No job in the world of sports is as intimidating, exhilarating, and stress-ridden as that of a hockey
goaltender. Clint Malarchuk did that job while suffering high anxiety, depression, and obsessive
compulsive disorder and had his career nearly literally cut short by a skate across his neck, to date
the most gruesome injury hockey has ever seen. This autobiography takes readers deep into the
troubled mind of Clint Malarchuk, the former NHL goaltender for the Quebec Nordiques, the
Washington Capitals, and the Buffalo Sabres. When his carotid artery was slashed during a collision
in the crease, Malarchuk nearly died on the ice. Forever changed, he struggled deeply with
depression and a dependence on alcohol, which nearly cost him his life and left a bullet in his head.
Now working as the goaltender coach for the Calgary Flames, Malarchuk reflects on his past as he
looks forward to the future, every day grateful to have cheated death—twice.

Chris Nilan, who grew up in the tough and gritty Irish enclave in Boston, was a feared enforcer for the
Montreal Canadiens, the Boston Bruins, and the New York Rangers and a Stanley Cup champion
never afraid to go into the corners or take off his gloves. He was a valued teammate whose very
presence on the ice affected the way the game was played. As an enforcer and as a teammate, Nilan
ranks among the greatest of all time; when the cheering stopped, however, Chris Nilan did not do
well. The same qualities—his aggressiveness and high-emotion style—that proved so valuable on
the ice did not serve him well when his career ended. Nilan turned to drugs and alcohol to dull his
pain and nearly died from an overdose. His story is a fascinating and troubling exposé of the booze,
bills, and drugs that destroy so many athletes after their careers are over. But it’s also a story of
triumph, as Nilan has been the victor in his fight against his demons.

Chris Nilan played right wing in 688 NHL regular season games for the Montreal Canadiens, the
Boston Bruins, and the New York Rangers. He racked up more than 3,000 penalty minutes during his

This monumental book about the Philadelphia Flyers not only documents all the best moments and
personalities in the history of the team, but also unmasks the regrettably awful and the unflinchingly
ugly. In entertaining—and unsparing—fashion, this book sparkles with Flyers highlights and lowlights,
from wonderful and wacky memories to the famous and infamous. Such moments include the era of
the “Broad Street Bullies” as well as the playoff drought in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Learn
how visionary founding owner Ed Snider created the Flyers and sold the city of Philadelphia on the
sport of hockey. Get the inside story of how the franchise built a championship squad, then
repeatedly rebuilt it over the next three decades to stay at the top of the NHL—in the process
compiling the league’s second-best all-time winning percentage. Enjoy classic tales about the great
rivalries (especially with the Rangers, Devils, and Penguins), about the great coaches—including Fred
Shero and Pat Quinn—and countless great players: Barber, Clarke, Parent, Poulin, Hextall, Primeau,
and many more. Wheth...

Written with the full support of Keith Magnuson’s wife and children, this thrilling and insightful
biography pays tribute to a Chicago icon and true hockey legend. One of the most popular Chicago
Blackhawks of all time, defenseman Keith Magnuson was raised on the raw, rough traditions of
hockey in western Canada. He captained the University of Denver team to its second straight NCAA
championship in the spring of 1969 and by autumn joined Blackhawks stars Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita,
and Tony Esposito, becoming the much-needed “policeman” for the team. Over the course of the
next several seasons, Magnuson and the Blackhawks fell painfully short of their Stanley Cup
aspirations; nonetheless, Magnuson’s leadership qualities led to his being named captain of the
team. On December 15, 2003, Magnuson was in Toronto riding in a car driven by former player, Rob
Ramage: he was killed when the car veered over the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle. As
veteran sportswriter Bob Verdi described Magnuson upon his retirement from the Blackhawks, “there
have been many finer athletes in Chicago, ...

More than 30 years after its cinematic debut, Slap Shot remains one of the most popular sports
movies of all time, and this book is actor Dave Hanson’s firsthand account of its making. Starring
the legendary Paul Newman, the movie was based on the hilarious and outrageous antics of the
fictitious Charlestown Chiefs, a tough-as-nails minor league hockey team in the early 1970s. In
financial trouble and due to fold at the end of the season, they bring in the Hanson Brothers—three
of the toughest hockey players around—in a desperate bid to sell tickets. What ensues is pure comic
genius. Here, Dave Hanson—who played ringleader Jack Hanson in the film—not only opens the vault
and dishes the dirt on the making of the movie, from the bench-clearing brawls and the practical
jokes on set to the legendary partying that went on during filming, but also explores how the movie
changed his and many of the cast and crew’s lives forever.

Two decades of lockouts, soaring ticket prices, and on-ice tinkering have convinced many hard-core
fans that the NHL’s long-time commissioner Gary Bettman is the devil in disguise, but this book
examines his motivations, peels back his often prickly demeanor, and explains how he manages to
lead, confound, and keep order. It details the unlikely ascension of a fatherless Jewish kid from
Long Island—who never played hockey and can barely skate—to the sport’s biggest job. The
seven-fold increase in gross revenue during Bettman’s 20-year tenure as NHL commissioner makes
him a business success story, and on his watch, professional hockey has also expanded far beyond
its regional strongholds. By taming the NHL’s famously fractious owners, all but busting its players’
union, and enforcing a lawyerly discipline even on trash talk, Bettman has become a figure of almost
unrivaled power in the business of sports, and this biography delves into how his influence shapes
rival leagues in other countries, dictates the schedule of the Olympic Winter Games, and spills onto
the ice itself.

In a city known as home to some of the sporting world’s biggest stars, few have ever shined as
brightly as the Philadelphia Flyers’ Bernie Parent, and this autobiography shares how he became one
of the most sensational goalies in NHL history. The catchphrase “Only the Lord saves more than

this work shows how his on-the-ice exploits were only a part of his amazing story. After suffering a

battled alcoholism and watched his marriage end in divorce. In the end, however, facing the fears
that had plagued him all his life led Parent to find solace and happiness once again. In Unmasked,

Experience again the Los Angeles Kings’ amazing journey to the Stanley Cup Final: an
unprecedented 2012 postseason run that culminated in the first Stanley Cup trophy in the franchise’s

final matchup against future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils. Led by one
astonishing performance after another by goaltender Jonathan Quick and timely scoring from Anze
Kopitar and Dustin Brown, coach Darryl Sutter’s team dropped just two games to their higher-ranked

The role of hockey in Canada serves as a national identity, a unifying force in a country of 33 million
people. So crazed are Canadians for their national sport that they ranked outrageous hockey
commentator and high school drop-out Don Cherry ahead of Alexander Graham Bell on a list of the
greatest Canadians in history. Penned by hockey star Paul Henderson-famed scorer of Canada's
"Greatest Goal" in the 1972 Summit Series-and featuring a foreword by Prime Minister Stephen
Harper, How Hockey Explains Canada explores just how deeply engrained this national pastime is in
the Canadian psyche. The intelligent discourse on Canada's national sport goes far beyond the
sport's most-loved icons, great plays, and notorious brawls by looking into the history and culture of
the game to explain why hockey has had such an enigmatic hold on Canadians. Featuring interviews
with more than 35 current and former NHL players, coaches, executives, and commentators, this
expansive biography of the sport explores hockey's inextricable connection to everything from the
Confederation to the Cold War to inter...
