Thanks Thanks - Schedel Gardens
SCHEDEL ARBORETUM & GARDENS Bequest Society From time to time we are saddened to learn of the death of a supporter of the mission of the gardens. And, from time to time, we realize that that mission meant more to the deceased than we knew as we are notified of a bequest to the Schedel Foundation. Philanthropy is usually not an act of seeking recognition on the part of the donor. However, to the Schedel Foundation as beneficiary such acts are monumental and we would like to recognize and thank those who remember the cause in their estate planning. We realize this to be a sensitive and very personal topic, and also understand that some do not wish to have their plans known. With that said, we are creating a Bequest Society to recognize those who have included—as well as those planning to include— the foundation in their estate planning. A simple and tasteful tribute area in the gardens will be created to honor those who so thoughtfully help to ensure that our mission endures for generations to come. If you have already made plans to include the foundation in your estate planning, or would consider doing so, please contact Rod Noble at the office to learn more and be included in the Schedel Foundation Bequest Society. FROM THE DIRECTOR SUMMER 2013 New Addition to the Gardens While traveling in Colorado more than 20 years ago, long time supporters Jim & Bertha Leppert came across a “rock” that they fell in love with, purchased and had relocated to their home in northern Wood County. That “rock,” happens to weigh 6 tons! The Leppert’s recently gifted the “rock” to the SA&G and last week, with the assistance of Mosser Construction Company from Fremont, it was relocated to it’s new home along the driveway between the Brown Welcome Center and the Manor House. Thanks Bertha & Jim! Much as the gardens change appearance during the progression of the season, the appearance of our new rock changes by the minute as light from the sun moves across the surface of the many minerals and composites that make up the beauty of this geological treasure. Consisting primarily of rose quartz, there are brilliant streaks of mica also prominent. You will be thrilled and amazed while gazing at this 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet high wonder that has a polished silver appearance over much of it’s surface. It is the perfect addition to the gardens and furthering our Mission of “...offering life enriching experiences for the benefit of current and future generations by affording opportunities for the study and appreciation of nature and the arts.” Photo Contest • Deadline August 24th Schedel Gardens 8th Annual Photo Contest presented by New York Life Insurance is under way. Bringing nature and art together seems so, well... natural! The Brown Welcome Center is featuring local talent, Dianne Rozak. Dianne takes digital photos and creates watercolor images from them. Many of the images are from the Marblehead area, including one of the cherished Lighthouse. These framed photos are for sale through October. The Trellis Gallery exhibit is graced with the pastel works of Rebecca Booth. Rebecca is from nearby Genoa Ohio. Pastels are different than oils and acrylics. Pastels do not have extenders to make the paint move with the brush. Instead the pure pigment is formed into varying sized “chunks” of color which is applied like chalk on a chalk board. Rebecca comments it is a dirty job she has embraced since the 1990’s. Rebecca’s work includes a combination of her love of nature and her pets. Rebecca’s art is for sale at the gardens through September 10th. “Collectively Independent”, the sculpture exhibit displayed on the grounds includes Austin I. Collins, Judith Greavu, William J. Kremer, and Jonathan Andrew Sudler. The work in this exhibit represents all four of the primary methodologies related to the art and practice of sculpture. Special thanks to Shawn Morin for curating the exhibit for us. These 8 pieces are in addition to many other permanent sculpture we have throughout the gardens. Planning a special event or meeting? Host your next special event at one of Northwest Ohio’s Hidden Treasures. The Brown Welcome Center is the perfect venue for upscale seminars, executive retreats, showers, anniversary parties, social events, or intimate wedding receptions. Over the past several years, due to budget constraints, that number diminished to just a couple hundred. It was always such a popular and beautiful fall display that many members and visitors began to express their desire to see the number of mums planted restored to that of years ago. Thanks in part to a $1,000 grant from the Ottawa County Community Foundation, we are on the road to being able to meet those desires. However, we are still short of our goal. You can help! Please consider a donation of $25 or more designated “Mums.” Donations of $100 or more will receive special recognition. Also, special thanks to Bench’s Greenhouse and Nursery of Elmore for growing the mums and annuals that adorn the gardens this season.
