Message From the Board President
Our theme for our 2013 Annual Fund Drive is “In Their Shoes” which represents those we serve here at the YWCA. But
there are many shoes that are filled here at the Y – our staff, our Board members, our many volunteers and our supporters.
As President of the Board, I am fortunate to be among a strong and capable Board, a tenacious and resilient staff, and a
mighty group of volunteers without whom we certainly could not fulfill our mission.
Reflecting on 2012, I am proud we now have two events that our community looks forward to, Women of Achievement
and Spring Into Action. Proceeds from these celebrations help support, guide and empower middle school age girls in our
community and provide critical funding for operation of The Other Bank. With more clients coming in each week, The
Other Bank is clearly vital for many low-income families and individuals.
Inside our 2012 Annual Report you will see an incredible list of individuals, foundations, businesses, organizations and service clubs that
have supported us this past year. Without the strong backing we receive from the community each year, we would not be able to fulfill our
mission or continue our programs for girls, women and families.
2012 was also a year of many changes. I would like to thank former Board President Sandi Roberts for her leadership as Interim Executive
Director. With Sandi’s leadership and a devoted and talented staff, the YWCA moved through a transition period without missing a beat.
Our Board also guided us with their wisdom and experience. We are appreciative to have Board members from a variety of businesses and
their guidance is invaluable.
This coming year I know we’ll continue to be a strong organization for families and females of all ages. I am looking forward to continuing
our middle school girls’ programs, serving families at The Other Bank with strong community support, and maintaining our historic house.
We are working to put the agency on strong financial footing to begin new programs and the future is bright. We want our supporters to
continue to be proud of the organization they love, along with the staff, Board and volunteers.—Valerie Gerst, YWCA Board President
Message From the Executive Director
These are exciting times for the YWCA! As you read the pages of this report you will see all of the progress that was made in 2012
including the expansion of programs, the renovation of our home, upgrades in technology, new partnerships and
increased staff.
We have an amazing and forward thinking Board of Directors and a staff that can handle any challenge. We have
hard working and dedicated volunteers. We are blessed with many partners in the community who work together
to make all of our efforts stronger. We are leaning forward in new directions, expanding programs, possibilities
and partnerships. You make this possible, and together we share in the success of this mission.
As Board President Valerie Gerst notes, our theme for the 2013 Annual Fund Drive is “In Their Shoes.” I thought about the kind of shoes
I need for my service as a new executive director at the YWCA of Olympia and they are running shoes. Sometimes they are used for
sprinting and sometimes for a gentle jog. Rarely are my shoes still. I’ve been running since I joined the YWCA because this
organization is on the move! We are blessed with incredible, imaginative and motivated people at the YWCA and I must run to keep up
with them.
All of you are part of this forward motion. Whether you have been a faithful partner with us for decades or are a new supporter, you move
the mission forward. For that, I offer my heartfelt thanks! — Tammy Stampfli, Executive Director
Our Mission: The YWCA of Olympia is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women, girls and
families through advocacy, education, service, and leadership opportunities.

Every day is a new day at the YWCA, especially in our front
office! 2012 brought many changes to the Kearney House, all
because of the great kindness, energy and investment of our
volunteers, staff and donors. If you haven’t been to the YWCA
lately, stop on by for a visit.
Donations &
Bequests
United Way
One of the first changes you will notice is the addition of our
beautiful ADA accessibility ramp. MSGS Architect, G. Miller
donated the design work and a large crew from the Yelm
Highway Lowes Hardware Heroes program showed up with
donated materials and worked for 3 days in the August sun to
build and paint the ramp. This gift of love provides access to
the YWCA where none existed before.
When you enter the front door you will be greeted by the
smiling faces of our front office volunteers and our Office
Manager. You will also see major changes in the foyer and the
Zonta Reception Room, thanks to the generosity of a grant
from the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation. The
restoration work has completely transformed these rooms
enabling all who use them to appreciate the Arts & Crafts style
of our historic house. Authentically-designed reproduction
wallpaper and furnishings that reflect the period, including
some c.1900 antiques, provide the perfect setting for our
beautifully framed historic photographs of YWCA women and
their families. The Zonta Club of Olympia and the South
Puget Sound Zonta Club provided funds to replace a nonfunctioning wood burning fireplace with a wonderful gas insert
that warms the room. The work was accomplished by many
hands, experienced craftsman & volunteers alike. Our special
thanks to the Saint Martin’s University Women’s Basketball
Team for their day of service ripping out old carpets and
pulling nails.
A trip downstairs to Kathleen’s Clubhouse will reveal yet more
changes. We received a generous technology grant from the
Boeing Employees Community Fund to replace aging
computers and equipment used by our middle school students
during our Girl’s Without Limits! spring and summer break
camps.
With so many wonderful changes in the past year it’s important
to note that there are some things that have stayed beautifully
the same. Every day we greet the public with love in our hearts
-whether you are bringing in a donation of products for The
Other Bank or you are a client in need of services or perhaps
someone wanting a referral or just a listening ear. We are here
to serve, to educate, and to advocate for women, girls and their
families. This is what makes the YWCA a great place to be.

April 24 welcomed a beautiful day to Olympia and our 3 rd
annual Spring Into Action Luncheon. Featuring speaker
Cynthia Iyall, Chairwoman of the Nisqually Indian Tribe, the
event was a wonderful celebration of the YWCA’s programs for
girls. Our Sustaining Sponsors, Lucky Eagle Casino and
Olympia Federal Savings helped generate over $10,000 for our
Girls Without Limits! and Girls Circle programs.
A crisp fall evening brought out the best in the South Sound to
the YWCA’s Women of Achievement Celebration. The gala
drew 300+ attendees and over $24,600 was raised in support of
the Other Bank. Once again, Lucky Eagle Casino served as
Sustaining Sponsor. Our 2012 Women of Achievement:

YWCA 2012 Program Updates
The Other Bank
In 2012, the Other Bank continued its mission to provide hygiene items to low income people that help individuals prevent disease
and promote their dignity as human beings. Those we serve know the importance of such items, and strive to take care of
themselves. What we also like them to know is that the items they receive are gifts from people who care about them. This
knowledge has a powerful healing effect for our clients who deal with much stress, disappointment and loss. Many come to us after
losing a job or having their work hours cut. Some come to us with specific needs – bandages, for example, needed after surgery.
They often feel alone. We remind them that they are not alone and give them something tangible as evidence.
One of the people we helped in 2012 was an elderly woman who was going through chemotherapy. She was a widow taking care of
her developmentally-disabled son and had always proudly taken care of herself and her family. She did not want to ask for help but
needed adult diapers and could no longer afford them. She had taken two buses and had walked a great
distance to get to the Other Bank. She wanted us to convey her thanks to the donor of these products for
bringing some ease to her difficult life. We don’t know who the specific donor was for this woman. We
don’t know what motivated the donor to give. It could have been a simple offering, an opportunity to repay
a kindness, the practice of their religion, or a desire to give hope to someone without hope. We do know
that the connection between the donor and the recipient adds up to more than the sum of the parts. This is
what we at the YWCA do – we create opportunities to connect those with something to give to those who
need help. While the names and faces are unknown to each other, it nonetheless changes the sense of what
community is, and strengthens our belief that invisible threads can be the strongest ties.
Girls Without Limits!
Since 1998, Girls Without Limits! (GWOL!) has provided hundreds of girls in our community with camps and after school programs
that promote confidence, skill building, and career awareness in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). In
2012, 43 girls participated in two summer camp sessions, a Community Café, and a Saturday Camp.
In July and August, a diverse group of girls participated in two GWOL! summer camp sessions. Campers engaged in hands-on
learning, field trips, and career awareness activities related to technology engineering, aeronautics, biology, and chemistry. Girls
learned about systems mapping and design by reverse engineering a single-use camera, they learned aeronautics terminology and
experimented with flight tools during a trip to the Museum of Flight and a plane ride over Seattle, they studied chemistry and
learned about toxins through cooking and fashion activities, and were educated in biology through a field trip to Nisqually Wildlife
Preserve and career awareness presentations from biologists from the Washington Fish and Wildlife Office.
In October, girls participated in a “Community Café,” a focus-group related to our participant’s academic and social needs, and a
discussion about how GWOL! can best support them during the school year. Girls reported that they want more opportunities to be
engaged with GWOL! throughout the year and they would like additional academic support. We are working to provide these
opportunities for girls in 2013. In November, the YWCA hosted the first of several GWOL! Saturday Camps which follow the same
format as summer camp, and provide an opportunity for girls to stay connected with the YWCA and each other throughout the
school year.
In 2012, GWOL! engaged volunteers including 12 professional women
who provided STEM focused career awareness activities and five
volunteer camp counselors who were former GWOL! participants.
Finally, we tracked student outcomes which indicated that participants
demonstrated improved outcomes in the areas of student learning and
self efficacy. They were able to define more terms related to the four
camp topics than they were at the beginning of the program, and they
were able to identify more careers associated with the four fields we
studied. Of note, girls reported that before being involved with GWOL!
they never realized they could be a pilot or chemical engineer; before
GWOL! they never wanted to go to college, but now they do; and
GWOL! provided a refuge from the social isolation experienced at
school. We are looking forward to expanding our services and providing positive and enriching opportunities for girls in 2013.
Our Vision: All women, girls and families in our communities live healthy and productive lives.

Girl’s Circle
In 2012, the YWCA expanded our reach and served more girls through Girls Circle via partnerships with 14 schools and six
school districts in Thurston County. Girls Circle is a nationally recognized program that research shows promotes academic
achievement, improves the ability of girls to form healthier bonds with others, and reduces their rates of alcohol use. Girls enrolled
in the program meet after school once per week and engage in a conversation and creative activity related to a specific topic. Our
Girls Circle Facilitators are happy to share a few stories about what happens in Girls Circle and about how parents and school
administrators feel about the program:

In one group, three girls have spoken about struggles with suicidal thoughts, either past or present. The parents of one of our
girls are currently going through a traumatic divorce, and the girl talks frequently about her anger, sadness, and frustration in
group. She often expresses her gratitude for the support that Girls Circle provides with comments such as, “This is the only
place where I can express these feelings.”

One parent shared that her daughter has demonstrated amazing growth since joining Girls Circle. The mother was so grateful
because Girls Circle had provided something no one in the family had been able to give her daughter in dealing with her
isolation at school. The parent felt that Girls Circle was a place her daughter could find acceptance and affirmation.

One of our participants misses a lot of school. However, she told her Assistant
Principal that she never misses Wednesdays because of Girls Circle! The A.P.
was so pleased that Girls Circle is having such a positive influence.
By allowing girls to express themselves and fostering strong and supportive peer relationships among girls, Girls Circle promotes self-efficacy and resilience so that girls believe
they have control over their lives and have the ability to overcome adversity. The
YWCA believes that self-efficacy and resilience will enable our girls to take advantage of
all of the opportunities and possibilities that exist for them and we are proud to offer this
important service to them.
Our Core Values: Dignity, Respect, Stability, Innovation, Social Equity, and Collaboration.
