Drug world out to grab LTTE's

Prabhakaran's death, a massive tug-of-war is on in
the drug world to grab his multi-million dollar drug
cartel. The LTTE had a well-oiled drug syndicate in
Southeast Asia, but there is nobody to run it after
Prabhakaran's death. "Therefore, several other
gangs are looking to take over the syndicate,
which has corporate-like operations," said a senior
narcotics control bureau (NCB) officer.
Narcotics experts believe a new drug lord is likely
to fill the vacuum created by Prabhakaran's death.
They are not ruling out the possibility of a terror
outfit like the Lashkar-e-Taiba taking over. Swaraj
Puri, former D-G, NCB, says, "The outfit's drug
smuggling activities are currently stalled" but other
drug lords will vie for the market LTTE created.
LTTE arranged funds for its terror activities by
smuggling drugs from Sri Lanka to European and
American countries. They also supplied drugs to
Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. According to
experts, the LTTE's drug smuggling business was
worth about $200-300 million. The outfit procured
most of its consignments, largely heroin, from the
Golden Crescent (see box) via Indian routes. They
joined hands with Indian druglords to facilitate their
business.
Govt’s resettlement program
on course

resettlement program is in progress with another
batch of 1,500 civilians from the Manik Farm relief
village being resettled in Omanthai,
Nochchimotai, Piramanalamkulam, Pirappumadu
area tomorrow (Aug. 05), Vavuniya District
Secretary P.S.M. Charles told the Daily News.
Reconstruction of roads, supply of electricity and
water were already completed in these areas and
the de-mining of the areas was also over, she said.
The Thandikulam checkpoint had been shifted to
the Omanthai exit point so that it would enable the
civilians to move about freely and this decision was
taken after the discussions she had with the
Security Forces Commander of Vavuniya Major
General Kamal Gunarathna, she noted.
Charges to be filed against
suspects in Janaka murder

immediate steps to file charges in the High Court,
against those being held in custody in connection
to the assasination of Major General Janaka

main suspect in the case, and is being interrogated
by the authorities.

warrant on an accused in the case relating to
funding Rs. 35 million of Tamil Rehabilitation
Organisation (TRO) to the LTTE and issued
summons on six other accused.

which carried out intimidation and murders. The
accused Krishnakutti Shivakumaran, was charged
for accepting the said sum on behalf of the LTTE.
The offences were said to have committed from
October 10, 2005 to March 24, 2006 in Colombo
and Vavuniya. State Counsel Sudarshana de Silva
appeared for the prosecution.

(DM - 03/08/09) The train service between
Vavuniya and Colombo had begun operating as
scheduled since yesterday, after a gap of one and
a half years.

track are now back in service.
HRW calls for international
probe on Mutur killing
(DM - 03/08/09) The Sri Lankan government’s
gross mishandling of the investigation into the
execution-style slaying of 17 aid workers in the
northeastern town of Mutur three years ago
demonstrates the need for an international
commission of inquiry, Human Rights Watch
(HRW) said today.
Tourism Ministry on Colombo
hotels room levy
(DM - 04/08/09) The Ministry of Tourism has
reactivated and determined the room-only rates
for star hotels in Colombo while also identifying
the hotel bands. Acting under the provisions of
the Tourism Act No.38 of 2005 the Ministry has
noted that the room-only rate should range
between USD 40 and 120. It was noted that
there are one to six bands categorised,
including a segment called apartments in the
analysis. It was also noted that the influx of
tourists has increased after the conclusion of
the war and more hotels are to be constructed
islandwide to meet this demand.
SC orders against Water’s
Edge deal stands

(DN - 04/08/09) The Supreme Court would be
a toothless watchdog of the Fundamental
Rights of the people if the incidental orders are
considered to be in violation of the finality of a
judgment, observed Chief Justice Asoka de
Silva refusing the applications to set aside such
orders in the Water’s Edge Fundamental Rights
application before the Supreme Court.
The Chief Justice noted that the incidental orders
which would be made after the delivery of the
main judgment are necessary for the equitable
dispensation of justice. About 12 intervening
petitioners including the Access International (Pvt)
Ltd, a major shareholder of the former
management company of the Water’s Edge Hotel
made the application to set aside the incidental
orders and revise the judgment in the rights
application.
Chief Justice Silva pointed out that the intervening
petitioners had sought the relief after 9 months of
the delivery of the judgment in October last year.
He noted that the applicants are making belated
claims even after the retirement of the former
Chief Justice who was one of the members on the
Bench which heard the case. The CJ noted that
the applicants should have made their claims
promptly before the same Bench when the those
incidental orders were made.

All set for Madhu feast

(ISL - 04/08/09) Public Estate Management and
Development Minister Milroy Fernando yesterday
said that all arrangements had been made to
celebrate the Madhu festival on August 15 with
State sponsorship after 27 years.
Around 500,000 are expected to travel to the 400year-old Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu in
the Mannar diocese for the August feast of the
Assumption.
"Reconstruction of the roads within the Madhu
shrine area has commenced, and cost of the
construction is 157 million rupees," Minister
Fernando said.
An area of one kilometre from the shrine had
been de-mined. The Army had promised to
provide security for the devotees, he said. Any
devotee could visit the shrine between 6.00 a.m.
and 6.00 p.m. from this Thursday (6) to Tuesday,

shrine premises. The pilgrims intending to visit the
shrine would have to fill a form in triplicate and
hand it over to the Army providing security at the
entrance to the shrine. The forms could be
obtained from all the churches islandwide,

Muslims perform sacred rituals at the Marian
shrine during the Assumption feast each year.

(DN - 05/08/09) A Sri Lankan resident of the UAE
who came to the Kingdom on business died in a
Riyadh hotel on Monday.
Mafaz Mohammed Saleem, 31, was found dead
in his hotel room.
Doctors have confirmed the death was due to
cardiac failure. Sabarullah Khan, charged de
affaires at the Sri Lankan Embassy, said the
embassy was coordinating with Government
authorities to make the funeral arrangements in
Riyadh in deference to the request of the next-ofkin of the deceased.
The deceased’s wife Shazna who flew to
Colombo from Dubai, had given her consent
through the Foreign Ministry in Colombo to have
the burial in Riyadh.

based in the North would soon be arrested for
aiding and abetting the LTTE, police said.

Vethanayagam is being questioned by a team of
experts of the Terrorist Investigation Department
on the basis of information provided by Tiger

Vethanayagam has been taken to Colombo for
further inquiries. Preliminary investigations
revealed that the GA had allocated over 60
percent of food and medicine meant for the
civilians for the use of the LTTE.
Vethanayagam had recruited many LTTE cadres
into vacant positions in the government service
and these recruitments have been made on
instructions of the LTTE, police said.

government servants for LTTE activities, police

Controversial Islamic preacher
to be deported

ordered the immigration and emigration

responsible for sparking sectarian violence
among Muslims.
Immigration Controller P.A. Abeykoon told The
Island that the preacher named Kovai Ayoob had
escaped to the Kalmunai area and Police help
was being sought to locate him.
Investigations revealed that Ayoob had arrived in
Sri Lanka on a tourist visa. He is said to be a
member of the controversial Tawheed sect and
was scheduled to deliver a sermon at a mosque
in Kalmunai in the Ampara district after the weekly
Jumma prayers last Friday. Upon learning that a
search had been launched for him, he had read
out a message to devotees at the mosque
through a telephone. This was broadcast via
loudhailers in the mosque on Friday (31).
A mob of angry Sunni Muslims attacked the
Masjidur Rahman mosque after a Moulavi (cleric)
had, during Friday prayers, called the followers of
a rival sect Kafirs or infidels because they had
celebrated a feast on July 24 in Beruwala.
First Lankan immigrant
to USA dies
(DM - 04/08/09) Rajah Rutnam, who was the first
Sri Lankan immigrant to the USA and the eldest
son of late Dr. James T. Rutnam and Evelyn
Wijeyaratne Rutnam passed away at the age of
75 on 30th July 2009.
He migrated to the United States from Sri Lanka
(formerly Ceylon) in February 1953 at the age of
19 and was the first Ceylonese immigrant to
America under the Mc.Carren Act of 1952. He
joined the United States Marine Corps, served in
Okinawa and was honourably discharged as Staff
Sergeant after ten years of active duty. In 1964 he
established the first Sri Lankan Restaurant in
California, Rajah's Elephant Walk in Hollywood.
A talented artist, he published the first Sri Lankan
newspaper in California. He was a Founder
Committee Member, Past President and Life
Member of the SLAASC (the Sri Lanka America
Association of Southern California).
He was the Vice President of the Asian Pacific
Organisation, Director of Sri Lanka Trade,
Tourism and Cultural Information Services, and
an active participant in many Country Oriented
Cultural Festivals.

*Euro 36 m for long term rehabilitation of IDPs
*EC to release funds for major infrastructure
projects
(DN - 04/08/09) The European Commission (EC)
will provide Euro 62 million for emergency
rehabilitation activities for Internally Displaced
Persons (IDP) in welfare centres in the North and
the East. A huge quantum of funds will also be
released for development projects once
rehabilitation and resettlement activities are
completed, Vice Chairman Development
Committee European Parliament Niranjan Deva
Aditya said.
In an interview with the Daily News yesterday,
Deva Aditya said the EC will provide Euro 36
million for long term rehabilitation of IDPs in the
North and the East. This is apart from its 2008
budget. The EU had also released Euro 17 million
for the improvement of shelter, health and hygiene
sectors in IDP welfare centres, which is distributed
through UN Organizations, the Red Cross and key
NGOs, he said.
In December 2008, the number of IDPs grew by
numbers and the EC released another Euro 2
million for emergency food aid which was
distributed through the ICRC, while another Euro 5
million was released through UNHCR, Oxfam and
Save the Children Fund in June this year.
He said that in the same year, Euro 36 million was
released as a long term rehabilitation plan of IDPs,
while another Euro 26 million was released for
humanitarian activities. “Therefore, a huge
quantum of development funds will be available
for Sri Lanka once all IDPs are settled in safe
places and the completion of de-mining activities
in the North and East,” he said.
Deva Aditya who is a Member of the European
Parliament, hopes to support Sri Lanka in the next
three years and was looking for well structured
development programs with project appraisals,
feasibility studies, implementation times and
timetables to be given to EU Embassy in Colombo
to be transmitted to Brussels for examination.
He said all development funds will be released to
Sri Lanka once the de-mining activities are
completed and IDPs resettled in safe locations by
integrating them into the normal society. “Once it
is done, the EC will release funds for major
infrastructure projects including road, power and
energy and water projects in the North, the East
and other districts experiencing extreme poverty,”
he said.

several hardcore LTTE cadres who need to be
identified, apprehended and rehabilitated to be
integrated to the normal society which is the need

Cheddikulam, Vavuniya that was set up to meet

intention to withdraw the Indian medical team and
close down the hospital with effect from 31 August
2009.
Since a very useful facility has been set up and
the physical infrastructure of the hospital will
remain in place, you may like to consider that the
hospital may be taken over by the Ministry of
Health on August 31,2009-”.

Southern PC dissolved

UNP 19 seats at the last SPC election held in 2004
*The Southern Province is divided into the Galle,
Hambantota and Matara districts.
The Southern Provincial Council (SPC) was
dissolved by the Government at midnight
yesterday.Southern Province Governor Kumari
Balasuriya issued the special gazette notification to
dissolve the SPC at midnight yesterday.
The term of office of the SPC is due to expire on
August 14. The polls for the SPC are scheduled to
be held in mid October this year, Government
sources told the Daily News last night.
The selection of candidates for the UPFA contesting
the election has already been finalised, they said.
Of the eight Provincial Councils presently in
operation, the SPC remains to be the only PC that
is yet to have conducted fresh polls. Before the
dissolution of the SPC, the Government dissolved
the Uva Provincial Council and fixed August 8 as
the date to conduct the elections for the Uva PC.
The SPC is the only PC to conclude it's four year
term of office and all other PCs were dissolved
before their term expired. The Government has
already conducted elections to six Provincial
Councils. The Eastern PC election was held in May
last year followed by the Sabaragamuwa PC polls
while the North Central Provincial Council election
was held in August of the same year. The Central
and Wayamba PC elections were held earlier this
year while the Western Provincial Council election
was held in April this year.
According to the 2001 census, the total population
of the province is 2,278,271.

NEDIYAVAN
Castro’s nominee was a 33 year old
named Perinpanayagam Sivaparan.
He bore the nom de guerre
“Nediyavan” meaning Tall man.
Nediyavan had joined the LTTE when
he was 18. He was sent to Russia for
higher education by the LTTE but
apparently Sivaparan did not complete
his degree there.
Nediyavan functioned in the LTTE’s
political wing and accompanied SP
Thamilselvan for the 4th round of
peace talks in Thailand. Thereafter he
re-located to Europe.
The LTTE during the peace talks
period from 2002-2005 had sent a
number of operatives abroad. Most of
these cadres were from the political
and intelligence wings. Nediyavan took
up residence in Norway.
Sivaparan alias Nediyavan married
Sivagowri Shanthamohan. Her father’s
brother was Gnanendramohan alias
Ranjan Lala. Gnanendramohan was
one of the pioneering members of the
LTTE and a trusted confidante of
Prabhakaran. Ranjan Lala was shot in
Jaffna by the Army when riding a motor
cycle.
This matrimonial alliance strengthened
Nediyavan’s clout within the LTTE.With
Castroâ€™s authority he spearheaded
resistance to KP taking over as global
tiger chief. The cold war erupted
openly abroad after the LTTEâ€™s
military debacle. Castro himself
committed suicide in Mullivaaikkaal.
LEADERSHIP
Realistically all that was left of an
“active” LTTE was its overseas
structure. Thus the overseas chief
would in practical terms be the head of
a post-Prabhakaran LTTE. When KP
tried to don the leadership mantle,
Nediyavan opposed it. He was
supported by an assortment of
Diasporic tigers united in being against
KP.
The anti-KP sections launched a
vicious campaign maligning and
vilifying KP.
He was charged of betraying
Prabhakaran to the armed forces on
the one hand and on the other, of
hiding the truth that Prabhakaran was
alive. KP was accused of being in the
pay of various international espionage
agencies. A story was also spread that
KP had passed information about tiger
“cargo” vessels to the Lankan navy.
Though KP and his bona fides was
well-known to informed circles of an
older generation the younger elements
of the LTTE abroad and most Diaspora
supporters knew very little about him.
So it was easy for his opponents to
attack KP.
Besides with the LTTE overseas
offices and institutions being controlled
by Nediyavan it was virtually
impossible for KP to put his point of
view across. Most tiger media organs
blacked out KP while several websites
kept on attacking him. KP was even
compelled to start his own website and
express his opinion.

I am going to be very frank with you. You can
quote me on this. When 300,000 people came
to our side, in the middle of the fighting, our
first priority was to look after them. What did
we do? We built these huts, very quickly, within
a period of three weeks. Then we built the
perimeter fence. The fence was put in for a
number of reasons. One is that amongst those
who came out, there were literally thousands of
former combatants and we had to ensure that
they did not slip back into the jungle. And of
course, you know, when the LTTE pulled back,
in addition to laying down mines, they also
buried hundreds, maybe thousands, of
weapons. We are discovering them on a daily
basis. Having gone through the agony of this
insurrection for 27 years, we were not going to
run the risk of it being reignited due to lack of
care on our part. So we had to keep these
people in enclosed spaces to stop that from
happening. There is no guarantee that we will
be able to recover all the weapons in the next
180 days, but we will make every effort to
locate and recover those weapons. We are
doing that on a daily basis. Literally thousands
of guns have been recovered, which had been
buried perhaps with the intention of restarting
the insurrection.
After putting the people in the camps, we are
also in the process of separating the
combatants from the normal civilians. Another
thing to remember is that when we had camps
in the Eastern Province in 1987, the UN itself
asked us to put barbed wire around the camps
for two reasons. First, children were being
dragged into the jungle by the armed groups to
be inducted into their units. The UN wanted us
to stop that. The only way to do that was to put
a security fence around the camps. Then, the
other thing was, the locals were looting the UN
supplies. They were coming in and walking
away with water pumps, roofing material etc.
So the UN asked us to put those fences. Now
when we put in the fences on our own,
everybody is complaining that we are putting
people into “internment” camps. I think that is
a little cynical and unfair. And then of course, I
think it is highly exaggerated to say these are
internment camps. This must be the only
internment camps the world has ever seen
which have post offices and schools – 40,000
children go to school there. There are 232
doctors looking after the welfare of these
people.
Where do you see the criticism coming from?
Which arena does it emanate from, including the
term ‘internment camps”?
It originated in The London Times, which was
quite bitter that its reporter in New Delhi was
not allowed into Sri Lanka. He is the one who
coined this expression. He called them
internment camps, concentration camps, in
fact, and that there was barbed wire. And he
took pictures when Sir John Holmes (UN
Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian
Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator) had
visited the camps. And of course, anywhere in
the world, when a helicopter lands, children
rush towards it. In this case, they were all
standing against the barbed wire fence…and
this was photographed and scattered all over
the world as evidence of people being in an
internment camp.

display at the gallery. The gallery is an

hope to be a source of education
especially for the children, there is a
plane on display and they can get on to

Court freezes assets of
Ceylinco PDL

(DM - 04/08/09) The CID was yesterday
ordered to freeze the assets of the
Ceylinco Property Developers (Private)
Ltd., and its directors. The assets are
known to be held at several state and
private banks and in other financial
institutions.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Nishantha
Hapuarachchi also ordered the CID to
serve notice on 12 public and private
banks and on two financial institutions
directing them to refrain from releasing,
transferring or transacting any business
on savings accounts, current accounts,
fixed deposits, treasury bills and bonds
maintained by the Company and its
directors without prior approval of Court.
The court order covers share transactions
and belongings in bank safety boxes and
ordered the Seylan Bank, Bank of
Ceylon, Peoples Bank, Union Bank,
Hatton National Bank, DFCC Bank, Pan
Asia Bank, National Savings Bank,
Standard Chartered Bank, Hongkong
Bank, Commercial Bank, Merchant Bank
and The Finance Company to submit a
list of assets maintained by the company
and its directors.
The Magistrate restrained the company
directors from transacting any business
involving movable and immovable
properties belonging to them.

Investor confidence has surged since the
International Monetary Fund approved a
$2.6 billion loan on July 27.
In June, a month after the country's 25year civil war ended, the central bank
sold $115.8 million worth of two-year U.S.
dollar-denominated bonds with a yield of
six-month LIBOR plus 4.97 percent after
seeking for $50 million for a rollover.
The central bank raised $184.3 million
the same way in March.
So far, the central bank has not decided
whether to roll over $35 million in
development bonds later this year,
Siriwardena said.

Charmaine Jayetilleke MBE organised and
presented for the English Speaking Union on
23rd July 2009 at the residence of the High
Commissioner for Sri Lanka, Justice Nihal
Jayasinghe and Mrs Indira Jayasinghe.
As the words of the song 'We are the World'
says, we have to make this world a better
place for all the children, the funds raised at
this event will be used for that purpose.
The English Speaking Union is a prestigious
British organisation with Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth II as their patron. This event was a
showcase for Sri Lanka with the clothes of
the World portrayed.
The Clothes Show commenced with a typical
Sri Lankan Kandyan ensemble modelled by
Ruvini and her two little maids, Mariah and
Sanjuni, wearing Kandyan half saree. The
Sri Lankan low-country saree were modelled

SPECIAL BIRTH DAY FOR LEELARATHNA

A very special Birth Day celebration was organised by
friends of Leelaratna Kariyawasam, affectanatly kown
as kapumahaththaya, at the kingsbury Temple.
Leelarathna is a well known personality among the Sri
Lankans living in North London. As a helper at the
Kingsbury Temple he always welcome the devotees
with a bright smile and look after their needs. Although
many a time he is working under tremendous pressure
with urgent demands of the devotees, he never shows
it. Instead he always keep his cool and serve every
one’s need without failing. No one has ever seen
Leelarathna losing his patience. As the chief organicer
or the Kapumahaththaya at the Devale he is offering a
unique service to the needy. He is also helping in
conducting the "Traditional Poruwa ceremony" at Sri
Lankan Weddings. It was a fitting tribute his unpaid
services to the community that his friends have
organised a puja to bless him on his birth day.
All the resident monks at the Sri Saddatissa
International Buddhist Centre headed by Ven.
Galayaye Piyadassi Nayaka Thera and more than
hundred friends of Leelarathna attended the evening
puja.

GEEVAKA SILVA WINS SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP

Sri Lankan Golfing Society's annual spring
championship saw the emergence of a new
champion. Geevaka Silva of Wembley who had
been knocking on the door had a fierce struggle
with Lasitha Fernando of Hastings to annex the
championship. Only a count back separated the
winner.
On a day blessed with good weather, 27 golfers
set out led by Captain Wimal de Silva of
Wimbledon for a stake in the 14th Spring
Championship and to win the Dukes Court
Challenge Shield. Playing at Birchwood Park golf
course was a true test of determination of skill. A
number of competitors were playing at their best to
beat the course, yet patience and steady nerves
were to come to the fore in a major way.
Earlier in the day, a friendly Texas Scramble
competition gave the participants to get to know
the vagaries of the course and to enjoy each
others company. After the dinner and the prize
giving, it was the turn of the present captain to
make an announcement regarding the captaincy
for 2009/10. Geevaka Silva who had earlier in the
day won the championship was in the time
honoured way invited to be the next captain. In his
address, Geevaka thanked everyone for the
honour bestowed on him and promised to work
hard during his term and to recruit new members.
There were strong appeals for the members to
participate in the forthcoming autumn
championship to be held at Tudor Park Marriots
Hotel course at Maidstone on the 5th/6th
September. The competitors and their partners will
be staying at the 4 Star Marriots Hotel during the 2
days of the competition.

Sri Lanka clinch series after Jayawardene ton
(DN - 04/08/09) Mahela Jayawardene scored a
brilliant hundred to guide Sri Lanka to a seriesclinching six-wicket victory in the third one-day
international against Pakistan on Monday.
The former Sri Lanka captain, who opened the
innings after Sanath Jayasuriya fell sick, scored a
sublime 123 as the hosts overhauled Pakistan’s 288
for eight with 21 balls to spare.
Jayawardene compiled 202-run partnership for the
first wicket with Upul Tharanga, who scored 76.
Victory gave Sri Lanka an unassailable 3-0 lead in
the five-match series, their first ODI series win
against Pakistan on home soil. Jayawardene’s
century, an innings that was hampered at the end by
painful leg cramps, was the 11th of his career and his

minutes then add onion, green chili, curry leaves, garlic

then reduce heat and add vinegar stir fry for 5-10
minutes.

but moist. Boil the noodles - just the amount equal to the
rice. Drain any excess water, put the noodles on a
chopping board and chop them until noodles are turned
into short sticks. Mix and churn rice and noodles. Put it
away after salt, adequate pepper,
and chicken seasonings are added. Taste and see how it
is. Then chop onion [1/2 the onion], 3-4 green chilies,
leaks, few carrots and tomato. Put these chopped items
in a blender and smash them

Sri Lankan Crab in Red Sauce
Ingredients:
4 crabs shelled, cleaned and well washed, cut in half with
claws attached
2 tbsp Oil
4 cloves garlic crushed
6 spring onions shredded
1 inch ginger finely chopped
3 small red chillies finely cut
1 tbsp Oyster sauce
2 tbsp light Soya sauce
1 tbsp coriander leaves chopped
1 tbsp sugar
salt
3 tbsp tomato puree
½ cup chicken stock or water
2 tesp corn flour
Method:
In a large pan heat oil, fry ginger garlic, add the crabs
and cook for 10 minutes, turning it to cook evenly. Next
add the sauces, stock, tomato puree and rest of the
ingredients and cook for further 5 minutes. Dissolve the
corn flour in a table spoon of cold water and add to the
sauce to thicken it. Finally add the spring onions and
coriander leaves.

Third in ICC Test rankings
(BL - 05/08/09) Sri Lanka has moved to third place
in the ICC Test rankings displacing India after their
2-0 drubbing of Pakistan in the recently concluded
three-Test series.
The progress of Kumar Sangakkara’s team in the
team rankings is due to a consistently high
performance during the period of the rankings. In
that time, the team has played 10 series, winning
six, drawing three and losing just one (in Australia).
Speaking of India, the annual update has not
benefited Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team as it slips
down one position to fourth position albeit by the
narrowest possible margin – 0.01 of a ratings point
– behind Sri Lanka. However, with New Zealand
heading to Sri Lanka this month for a two-Test
series, there is potential for imminent change.
Australia has retained number-one spot on the
Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship table after
the annual update but is now just two ratings points
clear of South Africa. The result of the ongoing
Ashes series will only reflect on the table at the end
of the final Test in September as the Test
Championship can only be updated at the end of
each series. As such Ricky Ponting’s team needs
to win the fourth Ashes Test at Headingley and the
final one at The Oval if it is to stay at the top of the
table – otherwise it will be Graeme Smith’s turn to
lead the number-one Test team in the world.

national billiards title by defeating Abdul
Sattar of Moors SC in the final of the 57th
National Billiards Championship final
played at the Billiards and Snooker
Association billiards table in Reid Avenue
yesterday.
Sirisoma who was the hot favorite since
the national billiards championship got
underway two weeks ago, did not have
things easy in the final as Sattar put up
stiff resistance before going down in the
last stages of the final with the final score
reading 832/640.
Sattar gave the defending champion
some anxious moments in the four hour
final which was played in two sessions of
two hours each. He surprised the
defending champion by taking the lead at
the end of the first session with scores of
376-347.
The resumption saw Sirisoma getting into
his best. He used his experience to the
hilt and put up a break of 81 which was
too much for Sattar. Incidentally this was
the highest break of the championship.
Sattar’s form wilted under pressure while
Sirisoma tightened the screws.

lead. I never take things easy and today,
fought till the end” said champion
Sirisoma.

place defeating Zuraish Hashim of OAC
in the two hour encounter which was also

The anticipation and excitement is all

encounter, and this year's 'Battle of the Blues
UK' was no different.

epitomises what team spirit is all about and on
the back of a great showing at the FOC 2009
by winning the Challenge trophy, they did it
again against the arch rivals the Thomians.

Annual Royal-Thomian Cricket Encounter
dubbed the 'Battle of the Blues UK' at the John
Lyon Cricket Grounds in Harrow on the 25th of

were asked to bat first in conditions very
conducive to swing bowling. With excellent

contributions from Samira Perera, Mathisha
Dharmasiri and Nirosha Wijenayake. In reply

and eventually lost the match by 26 runs.
