the cheyenne village
recreation/socialization program
A core value of Cheyenne Village is to support local families who have loved one with disabilities. Some families
who are the primary caregivers are significantly changing their lifestyles to support their sons and daughters who
have graduated from high school. Other families are aging and have been the primary caregiver for many years.
Some families are unable to care for their loved one; and that loved one is at risk of being put into inappropriate
settings like nursing homes, state-run institutions or even becoming homeless.
Due to this need in our community, we developed a Recreation/Socialization program with 100% private funding to
serve people with disabilities starting at age 18. The program addresses two needs: respite for caregivers and to
bring people with developmental disabilities together for socialization, education, community integration, and just to
have fun.
Last year Cheyenne Village provided 8,184 hours of respite which was an increase of 16% from the previous year.
This group meets two Saturdays per month from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, but Cheyenne Village will be increasing the
frequency of this program to every weekend starting July, 2013, which will require additional staff and volunteers.
Examples of outings and activities are Disney on Ice, Florissant Fossil Beds, Serenity Springs Big Cat Sanctuary,
swimming, hiking, and ice skating. Winter activities include arts and crafts, movies and bowling.
We rely on donations to continue this program and appreciate your consideration of financial or volunteer support,
so we may serve families for years to come.
“My daughter Ellura LOVES the Recreation/Socialization Program, its personnel and the activities. She looks forward
to each time she gets together with Connie, her supporters, and others in the program.”

Chuck Murphy Ridiculed by Governor, Family & Friends
Cheyenne Village Fundraising Roast
Chuck Murphy, founder and
owner of Murphy Constructors,
was the good-natured Roastee of
the second annual Cheyenne
Village fundraising roast, held at
the Antlers Hilton Colorado
Springs in February of 2012.
Chuck allowed himself to be
insulted by an impressive cadre
of people whose humor rivaled
any of the stars appearing on the
Dean Martin Roasts. (Google it if
you’re too young to remember.)

The roast was a resounding
success! $165,000 was raised
to support Cheyenne Village
programs that serve over 300
individuals living in our community with developmental disabilities and their families.
Rich Tosches, Colorado Springs
Independent’s humor columnist,
had everyone doubled over from
the second he got behind the
microphone. Guest roasters
were Colorado Governor John
Hickenlooper, former Colorado
Springs Mayor Mary Lou Makepeace, Marvin Strait, Gary Feffer,
Murray Weiner, Steven Mullens,
and Kevin Murphy. For those of
you who know the Murphy family
and missed the roast, ask them
about Chuck’s “Murphyisms.”
