Women Build Week - Avery County Habitat for Humanity
Simple, decent, affordable housing
Spring 2015
Our Mission:
Seeking to put God’s love in action, Habitat for
Humanity brings people together to build
homes, communities, and hope.
Women Build Week
Dear friends,
Ordinarily this is where you find a letter from Terry
Woodruff. Sadly for us, Terry has recently resigned
his position as Executive Director of Avery County
Habitat for Humanity. Terry has been an integral part
of our organization for 8 years and his tenure has included such achievements as overseeing the development of the Milford Meadows community and increasing our annual builds from one house per year
to three houses per year. While many people will
miss Terry, we the members of the Board are confident that ACHFH will continue to grow and build…in
more ways than one.
This winter we completed two homes — one for Jennie Jordan and her daughter in the Beech Mountain
Community and one for the Hanick family in our Milford Meadows development. And perhaps by the
time the trees start to show their leaves the Clark
family will be settled in their new home in Milford
Meadows, too. And speaking of new homes, we are
excited to begin work on a new administrative HQ
this spring. Our new location in Newland will be near
our ReStore, more easily accessible, and will be situated in more of a central location in the county.
We wish Terry the best and thank him for his service
to our organization and our community. And, we
thank you for your support of Habitat as well. Together we are changing lives in Avery County.
Tom Allison, Board President
Now in its
eighth
year,
National
Women Build
Week
challenges women
to devote at
least one day
to help build
affordable
housing in their local communities. The week also spotlights the homeownership challenges faced by women.
In recognition of National Women Build Week, Banner
Elk Lowe’s employees will join with Avery County Habitat’s approximately 40 women volunteers on May 7th
and 9th to work on the Farmer Family’s house.
Lowe’s Home Improvement helped launch National
Women Build Week in 2008 and each year provides the
support of Lowe’s Heroes, a corporate volunteer initiative, and conducts how-to clinics in stores to teach volunteers some of the construction skills needed onsite. This
year Lowe’s donated $1.75 million to National Women
Build Week, including a $5,000 store gift card for Avery
County Habitat for Humanity. This is part of a new fiveyear partnership with Habitat that will bring Lowe’s total
contributions to more than $63 million since 2003.

Collegiate Challenge
During the month of March, Avery County Habitat for Humanity hosts
students from multiple colleges and universities during their Spring
Breaks to help build homes for families in need of affordable housing.
Collegiate Challenge, Habitat for Humanity’s National Alternative
Spring Break program, invites students to spend one week working
with Habitat affiliates to build homes and improve communities. Since
it began in 1989, more than 230,000 college and high school students
have volunteered during their Spring Break to help build or rehabilitate homes, donating nearly $24 million to Habitat affiliates nationwide.
Typically, about 45 students come to Avery County Habitat each year
to participate in Collegiate Challenge. In 2014 Avery County HfH hosted students from Boston College, Suffolk University,
and The University of Maryland. This year we look forward to welcoming our fourth group from Suffolk University as well
as new friends from the University of Connecticut. While they are here, the students work on different projects to help
out including framing, insulating walls, installing floors, painting and even installing roof trusses! But it’s not all work:
during their free time, the students take full advantage of the fun things our area has to offer such as visiting Grandfather
Mountain, exploring Elk River Falls, and hiking to Wiseman’s View.
“We are grateful to all of the students who have so graciously dedicated their Spring Break to helping others over the last
25 years,” said Mark Andrews, Habitat for Humanity International’s Vice President of Volunteer and Institutional Engagement. “Many families have been able to realize their dream of home ownership thanks to the Collegiate Challenge program.”
The Collegiate Challenge program is one of the many programs Habitat has to engage the next generation of leaders in
Habitat’s work. In addition to the ongoing support State Farm® offices provide to local Habitat affiliates across the United
States, State Farm has served as the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity’s youth programs since 2007.
If you wish to see additional photos of the students’ work or learn how you can be involved with future projects, please
visit our Facebook page, email us at [email protected], or call us at (828) 733-1909.
Recycle
Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day. There are lots of ways to help our environment and
promote sustainability, but the most visible method is always recycling. It’s pretty obvious
that the Habitat ReStore is a great way to give old items new life. In fact, we estimate that
in 2014, our ReStore kept 207,241 pounds of material out of the landfill. That’s amazing!
But did you ever think about recycling a whole house? During this past year we have had 3
homes become vacant in our Milford Meadows Community. To most people this could
seem like a sticky situation, but for Avery County Habitat, it was just what we needed. Normally when we receive new partner families we work with them to plan for new construction of their home. But this year was a
little different. When these 3 homes became vacant and available, we started receiving partner families that
wanted existing homes that they could move into more quickly…what a great coincidence!
The Clark family is staying in one of the homes while their new home is being built. When they move into their
new home next month, another family wants to move into their current home in order to rent it until they are
able to purchase it outright. The Clawson family is also renting an existing home until they are also able to purchase it themselves. And the third house? Roxanne Follensbee is renting to own as well. How’s THAT for recycling?
New Partner Families
The Brown Family: Richard and Teresa Brown were
approved as a Habitat Partner Family last fall. They are
currently living in a trailer with no running water, mold
on the walls and walls that continue to buckle. Their
new home will be a much safer place, with air quality
no longer being a detriment to their health. Richard
has worked at Avery Middle School for 4 years now.
We welcome the Brown family to the Milford Meadows community!
The Farmer Family: Bill Farmer and his thirteen–
year-old daughter, Alexis, also have been recently approved as a Habitat Partner Family. Bill, who has
worked at Sugar Top for almost two years, and Alexis
currently live on his father’s land in two trailers put together where the roof leaks, the flooring is bad, and
their electric bill is over $300 a month in the winter.
The Farmers’ new home will drastically reduce these
environmental concerns, being both System Vision and
Energy Star certified. The home will be located in Newland on Squirrel Creek Road.
NC State Support
Organization
State Employees
Credit Union
Habitat for Humanity of North Carolina is the state
support organization for the 80 Habitat affiliates within
“The Old North State.” Habitat’s state support offices
serve affiliates through shared services, advocacy,
fundraising, training, and operational support. North
Carolina is one of the top three states for housing production in the U.S. Habitat for Humanity builds over
450 homes a year in NC! In North Carolina, at least half
of our affiliates build System Vision energy-efficient
certified homes. Assuring that the homes are energy
efficient keeps utility expenses low for homeowners. In
addition, one of the North Carolina affiliates recently
built a home using as many "Made in the USA" products as possible, and we expect to see this as a trend
across the state!
On February 25, officials from the SECU Foundation and HfH
NC signed an agreement structured to assist Habitat affiliates with the SECU Foundation challenge (“SECU Habitat
Challenge”) of building and selling a home in each county of
North Carolina over the next three years.
“The SECU Habitat Challenge is a magnificent opportunity
for Habitat affiliates across North Carolina and will be a catalyst for increasing their support for one another, and expanding our reach to unserved areas,” said HHNC Board
Chair Bill Cooke. “We are excited, honored and humbled to
partner with State Employees’ Credit Union members via
their Foundation to provide homes for deserving families in
all 100 counties of the State.”
SECU Foundation Chair McKinley Wooten remarked, “SECU
members are proud and excited to join Habitat for Humanity of North Carolina in their mission to create affordable
homeownership opportunities for the citizens of our state.
The SECU Habitat Challenge will provide a major boost to
the efforts of Habitat supporters and volunteers, increasing
HHNC’s capacity to help additional families obtain homes in
many areas of North Carolina without current Habitat services.”

Grandfather Golf & Country
Club
Linville, NC
On Tuesday, October 13, 2015, Grandfather Golf &
Country Club of Linville, NC will once again host the
Autumn Mountain Classic, a charity golf tournament
benefitting ACHFH. Grandfather Golf & Country Club is
nestled within the Blue Ridge Mountains and provides
a unique and picturesque tournament setting. Beneath
its colorful tree line lies Grandfather’s 18-hole course,
recently named one of America’s 100 Greatest Courses for 2013/2014 by Golf Digest. Since Grandfather is a
private club, the charity tournament creates an opportunity for non-members from all over Southeastern
U.S. to play the pristine course. Keep an eye on our
website for more details or email us at
