October 2014 - Westbourne Academy
Newsletter October 2014 Together we learn to make a difference INSIDE THIS EDITION: • AWARDS EVENING • VIVO REWARDS • KEY DATES Open Evening 2014 During the week of the 6th October, the academy held its open week, culminating with Open Evening on the 9th. Tour week comprised of senior leaders proudly touring round groups of prospective parents, showing them what learning looks like at Westbourne Academy. Feedback was extremely positive, as the hour long tours demonstrated to our guests just what a calm, focused and happy environment Westbourne provides. Open Evening shows the very best of our academy and involves hours of preparation and planning. As guests arrived, eager student guides presented them with a prospectus and special edition newsletter and then showed them around the entire site. Subject areas provided a huge range of activities for our guests to sample and experience and seeing the whole event unfold, made those of us who work here extremely proud. The evening concluded with Mr Trott outlining his beliefs and educational vision to parents. Two of our Year 7 students, Owen Garwood and Gesta Elezi, explained to prospective parents how they have found the process of joining Westbourne Academy this year. As parents left the building many provided feedback via our iPad survey, the results being exceptionally positive. As with last year, we are having a professional short video made so that anyone who could not attend on the night will be able watch the film on our website, to gain a sense of what an amazing place Westbourne is. Whilst the film will be of high quality, nothing beats seeing us in person. If you would like to visit the academy, please contact our main office and we will be delighted to meet you. Record GCSE Results I am delighted for the students and staff of Westbourne, who have worked unbelievably hard to achieve these record results. The scale of the improvement is exceptional. More students than ever before leave Westbourne with a fantastic set of qualifications, achieved at a time when GCSEs are the most demanding they have ever been. The percentage of students achieving 5 GCSE passes between A*-C including English and mathematics rose from 31 to 52% this year. That breaks the school record by 10%. The rate of progress our students have made, from the day they arrived to the day they left us has risen massively; expected progress in English is up from 37 to 68 and maths from 59 to 64. In our first full year of being an Academy we are delighted to see such positive outcomes. We talk here about learning to make a difference. I hope that these students now go onto the next stage of their lives armed with the confidence and the qualifications to go ahead and make that positive difference in society. Mr D Lee-Allan Vice Principal A Message from the Principal It is with a great sense of excitement and pride that I become the new Principal of Westbourne Academy. I look forward to building on the record breaking 2014 GCSE exam results to ensure that our young people can meet their personal and academic potential. Our motto is that: ‘Together we learn to make a difference’ and I am determined to work alongside our students, parents, staff, governors and our academy sponsor to ensure that all our young people are given every opportunity to succeed. As a parent myself, I know how important your child’s secondary schooling is and, quite rightly, you will want a school that is aspirational for your child; ensuring they develop academically, personally and emotionally. As the new Principal of Westbourne Academy, I believe that we are building a very special learning community here in Ipswich. For me, the quality of what happens in the classroom is paramount. I expect all our staff to be passionate about what they do and to know that each and every one of them can make a difference to every child. As we continue on our journey towards becoming an outstanding academy, we will actively involve our students and parents to ensure that they can be a part of our aspiration to be the best. I look forward to meeting you and your child in the near future. Mr G Trott Principal Basketball Club will be starting this term on Wednesdays in the sports hall, at 3.00pm until 5.00pm for students in Years 7 to 10. We are delighted to confirm that these coaching sessions will be delivered by Christina Stancicuca from Ipswich Basketball Club. This club is offered free to Westbourne students and has proved to be very popular indeed. Handball Club returns this term on Thursdays at 3.00pm in the sports hall, for students in Years 7 to 10. This year, as part of the School Games programme, there will be handball competitions for U13 boys and U13 girl for the first time ever. Mrs A Furlong Ipswich & South Suffolk School Games Organiser For a complete list of all the extra-curricular clubs and activities on offer this term, go to page 6 The new rewards system vivo vivo edge edge Coming soon to Westbourne Academy, is a new award-winning rewards system for schools that is used by 1.4 million student’s world wide. VIVO Miles is a system which allows teachers to award students electronic points called “VIVOs” which are redeemable on a wide selection of rewards from a customisable catalogue. Why are we doing this? Our aim for this system is to: Further enhance our drive for improved academic performance, attendance, punctuality and behaviour. Promote our positive behaviour policy and engage all of our students. Increase student motivation. Engage parents, involving them further with our tracking systems. Develop the economic well being of our students. How will students be awarded points at Westbourne Academy? Teachers will reward students with VIVO points for the following reasons: Good participation in lessons or tutor group. Home learning. Excellent progress/beating targets. Extra-curricular activities. Attendance and punctuality. Nominations for awards. Additionally, there will be extra point scoring opportunities such as attending revision or homework clubs, or for service to the school or wider community. How will students be able to track their points? Students will be issued with a login enabling them to track and save their points in their online account. Students may then access their account through a smartphone app, computer, laptop or tablet and can even receive a free monthly text update. Can parents track points? Parents can be given their own log-on so that they can see how their child is working in lessons. What types of things can the points be used for? Students can redeem their points on exciting products, games, experiences and school related items. VIVO points can even be donated to charities. Where can I find out more? Students and parents will shortly receive a letter home explaining the new rewards system. You can also find out more about the system by visiting: www.vivomiles.com/#!home Mr R Hawkes Assistant Principal Y10 Business Studies Trade Fair Last term Y10 Business Studies students set up 15 different businesses based on ideas they had researched and created. They presented their business ideas in groups to some visiting business people in a Dragons Den style set up. They also set up stands in the Main Hall displaying their business ideas and other students and teachers were invited to come and see the range of products and services on offer. The Dragons were very impressed with the pride they put into their work and their business knowledge. They decided on the winners based on their trade stand and the customer service received. They also assessed their professionalism when presenting and the creativity of their business idea. RUNNERS UP WINNERS There were TWO joint winners receiving the Best Business Enterprise Award and two runners up: Animaux is a brand new business for pet lovers of cats and dogs. We sell food and toys and they will be in a surprise bag. This is different from our competitors because we keep it a surprise and each bag contains a range of different items. Our logo has Animaux in animal colours, this relates to the business idea. Our slogan is “Every Animaux has a story” this means every toy and treat will give memories to the owner. Our business will be successful because we decided upon a unique idea. We have a Spray Bomb are a personalised mobile phone case business. We can spray paint your phone case in a range of colours and styles to suit your needs. We are different to other phone case companies as our designs are unique. range of different items also on sale for customers and have chosen products that customers and their pets will both like. We have learnt that there is more than just thinking of an idea, you have to think differently in order to succeed. Company Directors: Tea Addison, Gemma Addison, Luke Addison & Adam Goddard Company Directors: Harrison Brown, Lewis Miller, Dray Cann, Elliot Jerome, Kiran Singh & Jacob Halls “What a success the business exhibition was. To see the students take such pride in their work and see the culmination of months of hard work was very impressive. Looking forward to next year.” Jenna Bryenton, Dip RLM FARLA Parent Governor Magic Media is a website in which users can donate to the charity that we have chosen by uploading a selfie to the site. To be more specific, the user can donate £2 for example and then send in the photo they wish to upload. The more money the user donates, the larger the photo will appear on the website. For example if someone pays £10 the image will be displayed 10x larger than someone who’s paid £1. We think there’s a gap in the market for a business such as ours. We think that this is due to the fact that people like taking photos and donating to charity but there isn’t a site which combines them both. Company Directors: Arthur Ali, Kai Brame, Callum Marshall, Ivan Trewern & Harry Woodley MultiDream Our brand new business offers dream catchers for everyone. Our business is unique because we can personalise our products and we offer a variety to satisfy every customer particularly with our affordable prices. Unlike other businesses, we have highlighted our strengths and weakness’s to become the most successful on the market. Also we have dream learnt setting up a successful business takes preparation, time and creativity. Company Directors: Yolande Ayandeji, Lucy Brightly & Melinder Kaur multi Annual Awards Evening 25th September 2014 On Thursday 25th September, the academy hosted its Annual Awards Evening. This was a great opportunity for those students who did not get a chance at a lead role in the whole school production. The experience helped to build their confidence and gave them the chance to shine. It was also fantastic to see students from Years 7, 8 and 9 getting along so well and supporting each other throughout the process. Over the space of five months, students committed their time and energy to two after school rehearsals a week as well as busying themselves learning lines and developing characters. In July, the atmosphere backstage pre-show was a mix of nerves and excitement - this was a debut stage performance for many of the cast, to an audience nearly 150 strong. Students were enthusiastically getting into costume, putting on make-up, running lines and getting into character. The buzz was fantastic! Even with all the nerves, the students did not disappoint and put on a fantastically professional and polished STUDENTS of the MONTH ART Hope Ella Sadler Alex Dam Ryan Woolnough Adam Chambers Phoebe Logan Myah Halls Lewis Smith Ignas Grinevicius Erin Chaplin George Fields-Talbot Kalib Muller Cameron Couszins Taylor Thomas PHOTOGRAPHY Tabitha Biggs Becky Skene DRAMA Christopher Allen Ellie Bultitude Abbie Aleksic Erin Jackaman Jessica Welham Tyen Muller Abbey Cowles 7L 7R 7T 8D 8L 8R 9H 9K 9L 10R 10R 11H 11K 10R 11T 7H 7K 7T 7T 8D 8K 8N Kyle Gardiner Mafalda Leite Samuel Last Cara Storer Mariana Abegao Cara Hunt Emily Berry Reece Jones Luke Richardson Ewan Milne Taylor Thomas Zoe Ablitt ENGLISH Hannah Ross Ellie Bultitude Siobhan Kemp Sydney Corbin Giedrius Banys Matthew King Megan Brett Luke Addison Chloe Grant Caitlin Chatfield show, full of energy and engagement. As a relatively new teacher to Westbourne Academy, I felt very proud of the young people I had been working with over the last few months. It was a great opportunity to get to know many of them better and see how much hard work and commitment they were prepared to put into projects like these. I felt very honoured to share their success with them. Auditions and casting took place in July for our whole school production of The Wizard of Oz which takes place in December. The cast and crew are now busy rehearsing and for my part, I cannot wait! Starting this academic year, students will no longer be learning PSHE and Citizenship through timetabled PAL/ PSD lessons, instead topics will be delivered through a variety of exciting new opportunities. We hope that students will develop their spiritual, moral, social and cultural qualities through experiencing these topics in a wider scope. The aim is that students will be included more in the Westbourne Academy community and have regular focussed opportunities with their form tutors, collaborate with others in their year group and gain insight from students in other year groups. PSHE and Citizenship will now be covered in: • specific subject areas • themed assemblies • form tutor sessions • off-timetable specialised days YEAR 8 What is SMSC? It is the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our students. As explained to students in assembly last Summer, SMSC is everything that ‘isn’t the grades they leave with in Year 11’. Students consider the values that would help them succeed in all aspects of life, the skills and values that make them ‘SUPER’. YEAR 9 Throughout the year, students will discuss a wide variety of topics during tutor time, including: YEAR 10 SELF IMAGE YEAR 11 SMOKING ROAD SAFETY EID & Ramadan REMEMBRANCE SELF IMAGE For up to date news of what is going on in SMSC, please visit our website www.westbourne.attrust.org.uk/AboutUs/SMSC Autumn Half Term Begins Mon 27th October 2014 Ends Fri 31th October 2014 Fri 24th October 2014 Christmas Holiday Begins Mon 22nd December 2014 Ends Fri 2nd January 2015 Mon 5th January 2015 Spring Term 2015 Begins Mon 5th January 2015 Ends Fri 27th March 2015 TERM DATES 2015/2016 Summer Term 2016 Begins Mon 11th April 2016 Ends Thu 21st July 2016 Autumn Term 2015 Begins Wed 2nd September 2015 Ends Fri 18th December 2015 Autumn Half Term Begins Mon 26th October 2015 Ends Fri 30th October 2015 Year 7 & 8 Mr Lee, Student Manager: 01473-466172 or 07789-926274 Mr Hailstone, Assistant Head of Phase or Ms Salter, Head of Phase: 01473-466104 Year 9 Mrs Anderson, Student Manager: 01473-466169 or 07850-922643 Miss Stringer, Head of Phase: 01473-466168 Year 10 & 11 Mrs Clarke, Student Manager: 01473-466170 or 07850-922577 Mr Payne, Head of Phase: 01473-466168 Absence from School In the event of your child’s sudden absence from school, please let us know by calling our Website www.westbourne.attrust.org.uk Email [email protected] Spring Term 2016 Begins Mon 4th January 2016 Ends Thu 24 March 2016 Dates for your 2014 Weds 3rd September 2014 Christmas Holiday Begins Mon 21st December 2015 Ends Fri 1st January 2016 Spring Half Term Begins Mon 15th February 2016 Ends Fri 19th February 2016 Spring Break Begins Fri 25th March 2016 Ends Fri 8th April 2016 Summer Half Term Begins Mon 30th May 2016 Ends Fri 3rd June 2016 Attendance office on 01473-466145.
