Transformation...
Our New Look
MESSAGE
FROM CHARLES & SUE...
It is with warm
thoughts that we
greet you during this
cold season!
Recently, I traveled to
Washington DC to attend the National Prayer
Breakfast on behalf of the Grosse Pointe War
Memorial. After meeting with our congressional
and senatorial leadership, I was privileged to
be in the room as President Obama spoke of
the importance of humility in our work as
families, as a community, and stewards of
our country. It was a reassuring message that
underscored the need for community-focused
institutions such as the Grosse Pointe War
Memorial to lead as servants, always filled
with humility and grace.
It is from this mindset that Sue and I have
been actively spreading the word of the
Grosse Pointe War Memorial. Whether it is
our Arts at the Alger series featuring
innovative programming, or our new Summer
Camp program called Campville USA 2015, or
our exciting Summer Festival (coming in July!)
– Everything is driven with a culture of
service and excellence while providing a
valuable resource for our entire community.
Each day we continue to work hard to earn
your patronage at the Grosse Pointe War
Memorial. Come and join us for all of the
wonderful experiences in the pages ahead –
we are confident that you will find something
that excites you and drives you. We invite you
to take part! Thanks and enjoy Spring!
Warmly,
Charles Burke
President and CEO
Susan Davies
Chairman of the Board
The new Arts at the Alger series offers an
exciting program of live music, theatre and film
in the splendor of the War Memorial’s beautiful
venue. Programs include classical music,
chamber soloists, dinner theatre and family
holiday movies. Many of the events offer drinks,
dinner, brunch or light fare to make for an
exceptional entertainment experience.

GP War Memorial Provides Lunch to Vets at REBOOT Workshop
It was icy cold and snowy outside, but inside Detroit’s Piquette Square support
center and apartment project for homeless veterans, a hot lunch prepared in the
Grosse Pointe War Memorial kitchen warmed the souls of 15 residents taking part
in a special workshop. REBOOT, a three-week program offered through the
Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA), addressed the personal, social and
professional issues surrounding the often difficult transition to civilian life. And for
those three weeks, Executive Chef Angelo Loria and his staff personally prepared
and delivered fantastic lunches to Piquette Square.
“It was humbling to see these men and
women who served this country and are
now struggling,” said Loria. “It really felt good to be able to do something.
“I got to know some of them personally and their stories are touching. It was a tremendous
honor to help them in some way with life after the military.”
War Memorial Board of Directors member and Veteran’s Committee chair Ed Lazar
learned of the program through a contact in the MVAA and immediately wanted to help.
“We do a great job of honoring vets at our many events, so providing practical service is
the next step in our mission,” he said. “We wanted to feed them. To help them heal and get
on their feet again.”
Angelo and his staff prepared everything from braised short ribs and mashed potatoes
to spaghetti and meatballs. The vets were overflowing with gratitude. At the graduation
ceremony held on the last day of the workshop, each participant got a chance to speak and
almost every one of them acknowledged the War Memorial’s lunch as an important part of
the program.
“The meals were delivered with heart and soul,” said Janine Woodard, a US Army Vet who served
in Dessert Storm. “And each meal was gourmet.”
Dr. Mary Sue Stonisch has been making people
smile in the Grosse Pointe area for two decades
as the owner of Faircourt Dental Smile
Enhancement Studio. Recognized as a leader in
the field of cosmetic dentistry in Grosse Pointe,
Dr. Stonisch is one of a small group of women in
the world to be certified by the American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. An innovative
and accomplished professional, she is also
accredited by the International Academy of
Dental Facial Esthetics and is Fellowed in
Implant Dentistry.
Community members may not realize that her
generosity has also been helping organizations
like the Grosse Pointe War Memorial smile. A
former board member, Dr. Stonisch established
the Stonisch Foundation Endowment Fund at the
War Memorial in 2011. The fund supports the
Champions for Children program which focuses
on youth and their healthy development. She
has also been a generous donor to our various
events and initiatives and her guidance has led
to the development of our new summer youth
program, Campville USA (see pg. 21).
NEW BALLROOM DESIGN
SPARKL
Tamara Kessler and Associates, Inc. Frames Lakefront View
Special occasions will be even more spectacular at the
Grosse Pointe War Memorial after a dazzling redesign of the
lakefront ballroom.
The War Memorial brought in renowned interior designer
Tami Kessler to refine the space, which features parquet
wood floors, accent columns, crystal chandeliers hanging
from recessed domes, and a dramatic view of Lake St. Clair
and the Alger House grounds and gardens.
“This is a magnificent venue,” said Kessler, a native of Grosse
Pointe and daughter of noted architect William Kessler. “It is
beautifully appointed with wonderful details. We upgraded
the interior design to give it that ‘wow’ factor.”
A rich, dark stain was applied to the floors which enhances
the pattern of the parquet. The columns were painted a warm
grey, “to bring out the architectural elements that had been
hidden before,” Kessler said.
A metallic finish was applied to the ceiling domes with a
silver leaf effect adding extra sparkle to the chandeliers.
Striated wallpaper adds texture and interest to the walls.
Padded valances top the windows and modern, mesh blinds
can be brought down to darken the room for presentations.
“Accents and contrast are so important in interior design,”
Kessler said. “They make the space come alive. We were
fortunate that the ballroom has such good bones to start
with.”
“We are thrilled with Tami’s redesign of the ballroom,” said
Charles Burke, President and CEO of the War Memorial. “Her
design has transformed it into a modern, yet elegant space
that frames the magnificent vista outside our windows.”
The new design is refined and tailored, but not stuffy. The
palette is sophisticated, but neutral—the perfect backdrop
for a corporate function or an elegant social occasion.
