Fall Schedule
Fall is in the air and as much as I have enjoyed
summer, I am excited. Fall is my favorite season. I
love the crisp mornings, the beautiful vibrant colors
and the sports!
World Cup of Hockey
The World Cup of Hockey takes place this September
and there is something special about watching
athletes play for their country. I, of course, am
cheering for Team Canada. They are, on paper, the best team and should be the odds on favorite to
win. I am also really curious about how well Team North America will do. Many pundits cited Team
North America’s weakness as their goaltending. With Matt Murray being an integral part of the
Pittsburg Penguins winning the Stanley Cup this year, the goaltending question may have been
answered. I think they may do better than many anticipate. Another team I will watch closely is
Finland. As a HUGE Jari Kurri fan from back in the day, I have always had a soft spot for the
Finns. Defensively, they will struggle but I would like to see them do well.
MLB Playoffs
It looks like the Toronto Blue Jays may be on their way to another playoff run. Who can forget the epic
Jose Batista bat toss, aggressive passion emanating from every part of his being as he threw the bat in
the air. Or “THE” Joe Carter 1993 home run to win the World Series. It actually gives me chills to think
about it. Will there be another defining moment for the Blue Jays this year? I certainly hope so.
Tennis: US Open
I have been closely watching Milos Raonic rise to become the number 6 ranked tennis player in the
world. He has gone from a one dimensional tennis player with an amazing serve to a player with a
much more complete game. He has specifically worked on his weaknesses (i.e. at net play) and has
carefully chosen to work with professionals who can further his cause. Raonic has publicly announced
that it is his goal to win a Grand Slam tournament. He is holding himself accountable, I admire that
immensely. I don’t think he is quite ready to win the US Open this year but I definitely see a Gram Slam
win in his future.
NHL Regular Season
Last but not least, in October, the Edmonton Oilers will open their inaugural season in Rogers Place. As
a long time suffering Oilers fan, all I hope for this year is to be able to watch games in March that
matter. I want to feel the rush when an Oiler scores a game winning goal that has playoff
implications. I will even take the pain of a crushing defeat that has playoff implications. I am not
expecting playoffs but I don’t want to go through another season of watching Oiler hockey because I
feel it is an obligation as a fan. I want to watch because it is fun to watch the Oilers play again. I want
to watch because it feels like on any given night they will win. Please hockey gods, grant me this
wish. And in return, I promise I will always put my right sock on before my left.
