Discover small sheltered beaches
around the ramparts.
Saint-Malo is the jewel in the Emerald Coast’s
crown. Often the sea is a deep emerald green
shimmering around the stone walls
that make the port one of the most picturesque
towns in Brittany.
This guide is edited by Quadrat and Bretagne Régie Médias, with the collaboration of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Saint-Malo /
Fougères and the tourist office of Saint-Malo. Graphic design : QUADRAT (St-Malo). Photos : © Françoise & Patrick Gauthier - GAUTHIER MARINES (St-Malo),

Hotels and restaurants
in Place Chateaubriand.
By the 17 th century,
the town was famous
for its privateers. From Cartier
to Surcouf, the city still
carries the imprint of the famous
men who made its history.
Fortification of the walled city
began in the 12 th century.
The most imposing military
architecture dates from
the 17 th -18 th century,
following the blueprints
of the king’s engineer Vauban.
It takes up to forty-five
minutes to walk around
the ramparts and get the real
flavour of Saint-Malo.
The unique cobbled streets

The historic "Hôtel de Ville"
…a city of discoveries…
Across the bay
stands Fort National

Garangeau in 1689
and accessible
on foot at low tide.
Firmly set up on the open sea,
the city had to protect itself
from its most famous enemies
of the period : the English
and the Dutch.
The panoramic view from
the ramparts of the "Grand Bé"
and "Petit Bé" islets is spectacular.
Saint-Malo’s heart beats
to the rythm of the tides.
The highest and the lowest tides
in Europe uncover the bay twice
a day. Saint Malo is a major working
freight and fishing port,
ferry terminal and resort.

Stones, rocks, sea :
a wild landscape.
The horizon seems
to go on forever.
Heavily bombed in 1944 and 80% destroyed,
Saint-Malo was lovingly restored
stone by stone.
With its seafaring spirit, the City is proud
to welcome international sailing competitions,
such as “ la Ro ut e du Rhum ” ,
“ t he Ta ll Ship s Ra c e ” and cultural events
such as “ Fe st iva l Et o nna nt s Vo ya ge ur s”
and “ Qua i de s Bulle s” .

An invitation to go walking
From the sea or from the top of
the ramparts, the view also takes
in the two towns which merged with
Saint-Malo in 1967 : Saint-Servan
and Paramé.
In one hour or one and a half hours
at the most, on foot or by bicycle,
discover the essence of these
treasures.

Saint-Servan,
the first town…
Lively, authentic and great for shopping, Saint-Servan offers the visitor many attractions.
The walk begins in Rue Dauphine : the cobblestoned streets and old houses mostly date
from the 17th and 18th centuries… Number 6 was the address of the Union Hotel, with
its direct access to the beach (an innovation in 183O) and at number 31 stands a strange
antique shop.
Rue des Bas-Sablons, Place Mgr Duchesne dominated by the imposing Manor Hotel,
Rue des Hauts-Sablons, where there was once just a narrow strip of sand!
Today, old houses and viewpoints overlook the promenade, bars and terraces with views
of the marina.
Let’s head for the Rue d’Alet, then the Cité and its unique panorama !
Saint-Malo was surely born on this vast, rocky and very green promontory during the Bronze
age then though the ages of the Vikings and the Gallo-Romans, the first diocese, until the
years of German occupation which saw the construction of formidable military defences.
11
Taking the Corniche d’Alet, let’s follow
the cliff path GR 34 with its magnificent
views, notably of the port and Solidor Tower
(today the home of the International
Museum of Cape-Horners)…
Returning via the Rue des Bas-Sablons,
taking a short cut down the Rue Amiral Magon :
here we are in Bouvet Square where you
will find the theatre, the covered market
and the open-air market every Tuesday and
Friday. On the right the Rue Ville-Pépin,
on the left the Rue Clémenceau :
These splendid streets for window-shopping
also invite you to admire their architectural
heritage. You will discover
medallions of famous men,
the modest Saint-Louis
Chapel, ornate façades,
memorial plaques, carved doors and finely
wrought gates, stucco decoration
Saint-Servan will steal your heart !

Paramé, SaintMalo
village-style
Enjoyable to both live in and visit,
Paramé is the discreet centre in the privateer’s town.
Discover it by walking along the Sillon promenade,
formerly just a strip of sand connecting Saint-Malo
Notimart
Island and the rest of the town.
Leave the National Fort port-side and take to the seas,
breathe in the iodine and the centuries gone-by.
In the same place where the famous « Terre Neuve »
sailing boats waited for the Great Departure the kite
surfs wait for the wind before gliding and flying in
front of the windows of the beautiful grand villas :
Ker Malo at number 1, Les Lutins, Ellerslie,
La Suédoise, the Grand Hôtel des Thermes…
After the Grande Plage, the Boulevard de Rochebonne
takes you past the picturesque Briantais Park and
the beautiful gates of L’Ormerie, home to the poet
Tiercelin…
We are now in the heart of this « village in the town »
which distinguishes Paramé from the rest of SaintMalo. Take time to browse in the open-air market
held around the town hall (former church)
and in the covered market…
Stroll along the shopping
streets until you reach
the church…Take time to visit
the Parc des Chênes, further
along, and appreciate the
peace and quiet of its paths.

Le beurre Bordier
THE SPIRIT OF BUTTER
Jean-Yves Bordier is the last artisan to knead in a wooden mixing bowl, he is also today the only one
to salt the butter on request. During the kneading and salting processes,
the butter "cries", it develops gustatory properties and a great complexity
of aromas along with a smooth, silky texture... The butter is hand shaped and hit
with box tree paddles in order to form large of smaller "tailor made" packs for the
greatest chefs. They can choose the recipe, shape, weight and saltiness according to
their own needs and creativity. You are welcome to the “Bistro Autour du Beurre”,
where you will discover an instinctive cuisine that lets the Bordier butters bloom
and express all their flavour with quality seasonable products.
