With strategic thought and strong community support, we launched 50th Anniversary plans, designed our new Live and Give Donor Campaign, reached out to neighbouring Westman Foundations, modernized donor relations, fine-tuned our investment management strategies, launched an ongoing policy and program review, refreshed our Board of Directors, strengthened our 10 year YIP program, listened to comedians and country music stars and heard many rewarding testimonials from grant recipients over the year. How did we do it? Vision, passionate people and discipline. Our vision is better with respect to where we want to go, but great vision without great people is irrelevant. We have engaged a variety pack of volunteer Directors inside BACF and other volunteers in our growing community. Our mottos are “who before what”…”why before how”. It's not easy but it's working. Our future philanthropic challenges as we move forward are simple and revolve around discipline in what we do. “Disciplined action without self-disciplined people is impossible to sustain and disciplined action without disciplined thought is a recipe for disaster”….Jim Collins, Good to Great. This quote is relevant to our upcoming commitment to prepare Vital Signs next year. We are getting better at pulling together as a community team and resisting the curse of complacency. We believe in always finding a better way to put the community first and best. Our “True North” at BACF is staff Laura and Barb, who, as expected, has met and exceeded expectations in their abilities to coordinate and deliver what we need to do best. Thank you to our corporate and business partners, caring community, generous donors, dedicated Directors and great staff. Respectfully submitted Phil Weiss ways to give | page 3 ways to give Establishing a Fund When you decide to establish your own fund or support one of the Foundation's existing funds, you will join with people from all walks of life with one thing in common: the desire to make a difference in your community — forever. Mr. McDonald was a driving force behind the establishment of the Green Acres Lodge Fund. The Green Acres Lodge was a facility constructed in the east end of Brandon in 1967 to provide an affordable housing option for returning First and Second World War Veterans. The last veteran resident vacated the lodge in 2011. The foresight of Dick and a group of community minded philanthropic people has turned this site into a legacy that will benefit a wide variety of very worthwhile organizations in Brandon and the Southwestern MB Region. Dick McDonald continued to be a tireless fundraiser and supporter of the Brandon University Foundation and the Brandon Area Community Foundation. Clair Murray beloved husband of Mildred and a devoted father, was a well-known and well-respected businessman throughout many communities. Remembered as a kind and compassionate man, Clair began his career in the auto industry when he returned from the Second World War where he served in the Royal Navy. In 1945, he and his brother Ewart took over the family car dealership in Souris. This was the beginning to his lifelong love of buying and selling cars. In 1954, Clair met and married the local home economist, Mildred Clark. Clair and Millie have four sons – Doug, Paul, Dan and Chris. Clair was very proud that all four of his sons followed in his footsteps. Clair leaves a legacy of 12 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Clair was an outstanding mentor to his sons as well as employees and partners. He touched many people in his business dealings. Clair effortlessly cultivated respect and enjoyed valued friendships throughout his life; he had a huge interest in people, their families and history. It was not the many awards that defined Clair's success but rather his genuine interest in people's lives that provided the example of his modest nature. Brandon Area Community Foundation is very grateful to Clair and Millie for their support of the Foundation and to the many other community projects that have benefited from their generosity. Giving to a cause is most commonly linked to a personal connection or cause in a community that fosters the values of the giver... Evelyn Ruth Turnbull generously named the Brandon Area Community Foundation as one of the beneficiaries of her Estate with a significant gift that will help support future education and community projects. Ruth was born and educated in Winnipeg. Ruth took violin and art lessons and enjoyed canoeing on Manitoba's rivers and lakes. Through mutual friends, Ruth met Mel Turnbull from Hartney, MB. They married in 1955 and lived on the family farm near Hartney until they retired to Brandon in the 1980's. Ruth and Mel travelled extensively and spent winters in Florida but they remained active in the Hartney community with church activities, golfing, curling, square dancing and visiting lifelong friends. Ruth and Mel had great appreciation and respect for education. During some years that funds for further education were not readily available; the Turnbull's decided to provide funding for bursaries and scholarships to assist students from Hartney and area. Ruth's endowment gift to the Foundation is her way of giving back to the communities where they both had lived. Dr. Frank Purdie was a loyal supporter and friend of the Brandon Area Community Foundation. Dr. Purdie spoke passionately of his life experiences growing up as the son of a country doctor in Griswold, MB. It is clear to see that Dr. Purdie's sense of philanthropy was nurtured through being raised by hard working parents who did what they could to make life better for others and for the community. In 2006, Dr. Purdie established two funds with BACF in memory of his late wife, Gwyneth Purdie, the YMCA Youth Endowment Fund in support of “at risk” youth and The Gwyneth and Frank Purdie Family Fund in support of King George School early years literacy. A third fund, The Gwyneth and Frank Purdie Adult Literacy Fund in support of Samaritan House adult programs was established in 2008. Dr. Purdie felt it was important to give back to the community where one made one's living. The gifts of Frank and Gwyneth Purdie will continue to make a difference in our community for generations to come. Muriel and Harry “Hap” Fraser generously named the Brandon Area Community Foundation as one of the beneficiaries from their final Estate with a significant gift on the passing of Muriel. “Hap” Fraser from Brandon married Muriel Coleman in 1945. Mr. Fraser served in the RCAF during World War II, returning to Brandon in 1946. Following a brief stint as manager of the North Hill IGA, Hap and Muriel built their own IGA grocery store on Victoria Avenue west, where they operated until their retirement in 1972. Hap Fraser served a term on the Brandon City Council and was a member of the Brandon Lion's Club from 1952 until his passing in 1991. Muriel volunteered at the RCAF, worked in retail, and once the IGA store opened, worked beside her husband until retirement. Muriel was also an avid golfer. Executor and close friend, Don Elkington states: “It was an honor to have known these two very special people since the day I was born. Their final wish was to help in some small way with this gift, strengthening and improving the quality of life in the community, for the City of Brandon and region. That is special.” 2014 grant recipients | page 5 2014 grant recipients THE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP $2,500 $500 $2,000 $1,000 $500 $5,000 $10,000 $10,000 $3,175 $144 $5,000 $1,500 $10,000 $7,500 $2,000 $25,000 $1,500 $732 $500 $200 $1,335 $400 $500 $3,000 $1,000 $500 60 Royal Canadian Sea Cadets SWIFTSURE Alzheimer's Society Artist in Healthcare Bdn.& District Chapter Learning Disabilities Assoc.of MB, Inc. The group meets in the evenings hence the name Brandon Hills Fireflies came to be, as they would “light up the night”. One of the main goals for the Brandon Hills Fireflies group is to keep their community members connected through community activities. Such activities that take place are tours of local businesses and other interesting venues, presentation given by different guest speakers at their monthly meetings and organizing special community events. Through Your Local Community Foundation Bringing People and Causes Together. One such special community event has been hosting a beef pit BBQ since August of 1970, feeding up to 450 people. Presently, the Brandon Hills Fireflies have 12 members and rely on a large number of other community members to help with food preparation and serving. This annual BBQ engages individuals of all ages, and with hope that events like this, the value of community service and fellowship is instilled within everyone who participates. With the success of this annual event they are able to make financial donations to various charities, one of which is the Brandon Area Community Foundation. The group always strive to have their donations remain within the Westman area. Spokesperson Darlene McPherson comments: “With the decline in rural families, we certainly have experienced a decline in our membership. For those of us who remain active with the Fireflies, we feel we are fulfilling a need in our community. We are keeping our rural friends and neighbours informed and connected but at the same time we hope we are helping organizations with our donations”. The Fireflies are definitely a shining light of community spirit! fund reporting | page 7 fund reporting Your Community Makes You Community Family Funds: $1,466,996 Secter, Joseph & Gwen, Founders Initial Gift Allen, John & Shirley Associated Canadian Travellers (ACT) No. 1037 Bailey, Doug & Lynne Baker, Estate of Anne & Carl Bidinosti, Rudy & Rosemarie Binkley, Manse & Anna Hunt Blythe, Estate of Leonard Bowslaugh, Pat Bradley, Walter & Jan Brandon Senior Citizens Brandon Sun Brown, Randy & Elaine Campbell, Jim & Eva Campbell, Mrs. Duncan Cancade, Estate of Suzanne Cargill Limited Chapman, Ann Christies Office Supply Clark, Murray & June Clear Lake Ladies Golf Club Clement, Robert & Mary Coleman, J.
