A – Principal of Operation
EasySlack
Function
When braking occurs with excessive clearance between the brake linings
and the brake drum, the angular travel of the slack adjuster can be
divided into the following components:
Clearance angle (C1) – corresponding to normal clearance
(C1=C2)
Elastic angle (E) – accounted for by the elasticity of the
drum, linings and in force transmission components.
Return Angle (R) – corresponding to the slack adjuster’s
angular travel of return to starting point.
B - Working Cycle of Slack Adjuster Can Be Divided into Five Stages
1-Starting Position
Reference holder (H) locks the reference wheel (7) in position, which meshes
with the adjustment screw (9) and is in contact with the housing. Clearance
A (clearance angle C1) between the adjustment screw and the cover (25),
provides a calculated clearance between the brake linings and the drum.
2-Application of Brake with Excessive Clearance
Slack adjuster moves through angle C, which corresponds to measurement A.
Reference wheel (7) turns the adjustment screw (9), which is placed against
the cover (25), counterclockwise. The brake shoes expand but not enough to
touch the drum.
3-Slack Adjuster Moves through Angle Ce
Reference wheel (7) continues to turn the adjustment screw (9), since both the
one-way clutch (33,18) and the friction clutch (18) are now locked, the worm
screw (6) turns the worm wheel (1) and subsequently the camshaft. The
linings are now in contact with the brake drum.
4-SlackAdjuster Moves through Angle E
Adjustment screw (9) continues to turn the one-way clutch (33) while slippage
now occurs in the friction clutch (33,18), the worm screw (6). The worm
wheel (1) stops turning as the worm screw is passed against the rear section.
The linings are pressed with force against the drum.
5-Slack Adjuster Moves through Angle C2 and R
Adjustment screw (9) is now turned clockwise by the reference wheel (7). At
the same time as it is displaced axially towards the housing, it passes angle E.
After passing angle C2, the adjustment screw (9) is then in contact only with
the housing. During the continued angular travel R, the adjustment screw (9)
turns only the gear wheel (15) inside the one-way clutch, which now rotates
in the direction of release. The friction brake (18,20) prevents
the worm screw (6) from rotating backward.

Installation
Before Installation, carry out the following operations:
1) Make sure the brake chamber push rod is at its initial starting (brake released) point.
2) Identify whether the system is long stroke or standard.

3) Grease the camshaft splines before installation.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
4) Install the reference washer. (see reference washer installation
chart)
5) Position the slack adjuster on the camshaft with slack arm
approximately 4 inches in front of the clevis yoke. (figure 1)
6) Turn adjusting nut clockwise until the slack adjuster studs line
up with the notches on the reference washer (see illustration).
7) Lock the slack adjuster to the camshaft taking care no to cause
pinching. Maximum end play is 0.040”.
8) Continue turning the adjusting nut clockwise until the hole
on the clevis and the hole on the slack adjuster line up.
9) Install the clevis and cotter pins.
10) Turn the adjusting nut clockwise until the brake linings are
in full contact with the brake drum and then turn the adjusting
o
nut counterclockwise 120 (1/3-turn).
11) Perform a function test by applying the brakes a few times.

Installation Tips and Tricks: (Figure 1)
1. To install this reference washer you must first loosen the existing reference strap (G)
attached to the chamber bracket.
2. Join reference washer (A) and slack adjuster as a single unit and slide onto the
camshaft.
3. Line up holes on reference washer (A) and existing reference strap (G), slide carriage
bolt (B) into hole and loosely tighten nut (C).
4. Tighten reference strap (G) nut.
5. Tighten carriage bolt (B). MAKING SURE THAT REFERENCE WASHER (A)
REMAINS PARALLEL WITH THE SLACK ADJUSTER BODY SURFACE
GUARANTYING THE REFERENCE WASHER DOES NOT BIND WITH THE
SLACK ADJUSTER.
6. Finish by installing slack adjuster attaching hardware. Capscrew (F), lockwasher,
camwasher. Spacing washer (E) is used only in the event that upon capscrew
installation the slack adjuster has no end play. YOU MUST HAVE AT MINIMUM
OF 0.015” OF END PLAY.
Note:
For front axle installation, spacing washer (E) is not used. Finish by installing snap
ring on camshaft.

1. Remove existing chamber support bracket bolt from unit. (Bottom position) To make sure the
correct bolt is removed slide reference washer (A) onto camshaft and line up with support
bracket. Bolt to be removed is inline with the reference washer (A).
3. Line up hole on reference washer (A) with hole on chamber support bracket.
4. Insert support bolt (B), with washer (C) (if needed, to maintain a parallel alignment of reference
