FALL 2016 CATALOG SPRING 2017 More information at www.brightskypress.com where Texas meets books BRIGHT SKY PRESS CATALOG New Releases FROM MATRIARCH TO MAYOR Eliza Kempner to Lyda Ann Thomas, Four Generations of Galveston’s Kempner Women Make Their Mark Elise Hopkins Stephens $24.95 HARDCOVER 978-1-942945-22-2 432 pages 6" x 9" Black & White MEMOIR Much has been written about the Kempner family of Galveston, Texas, and their business, civic and philanthropic accomplishments, but these histories have focused on the accomplishments of the men. Now, “From Matriarch to Mayor: Eliza Kempner to Lyda Ann Thomas, Four Generations of Galveston’s Kempner Women Make their Mark” brings the strong Kempner women into the light and shows their role in the family’s impact. Author Elise H. Stephens provides the individual stories of four generations of Kempner women whose strength and commitment transformed their community as their men were building the Imperial Sugar Company and the Kempner Fund. From philanthropy to volunteer work, each of these women was eager to use her talents in service to city, state and country. Anecdotes, letters, journal entries and personal photographs illustrate the importance of the women and provide insight into the Kempners’ traditions and beliefs, their way of life and the often-dramatic times in which they lived. Stephens presents over a dozen of the women—some calm and collected, some bold and brash, all fascinating. As new generations of this strong family emerge as mainstays of Galveston, Texas and beyond, this wellresearched and engaging history creates a window into both the formation and the perpetuation of a significant dynasty. www.brightskypress.com A historian by training, humanist by persuasion, activist by experience, and optimist in the face of adversity, ELISE HOPKINS STEPHENS brings to the telling of the Kempner Women’s story a rare combination of candor and compassion supported by thorough scholarship and research into her subjects. A native Galvestonian, with a B.A. in history from Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University, she graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa with a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to Yale. Taking her M.A. in history at Yale, she returned to Tulane to continue study toward a Ph.D. which she jettisoned for marriage to an aspiring Ph.D. in Physics, resulting in a thirty-year tenure in Huntsville, Alabama, after which Ms. Stephens decided it was time to return to the city she loved most in the world, her hometown, Galveston, Texas. 713.533.9300 FALL 2016 SPRING 2017 New Releases CROSS-EXAMINING HISTORY A Lawyer Gets Answers from the Experts About Our Presidents Talmage Boston | Foreword by Ken Burns $29.95 HARDCOVER 978-1-942945-20-8 500 pages 7" x 10" Black & White HISTORY For over 38 years, Talmage Boston’s vocation has been getting to the heart of his cases by asking the right questions—and not stopping until he gets them answered. Three years ago, he had an epiphany: What if he used his examination skills to go deeper into his lifelong avocation—the study of presidential history? He’s now followed through on that epiphany with his new book, Cross-Examining History: A Lawyer Gets Answers From the Experts About Our Presidents (Foreword by Ken Burns). The final product contains thirty-one edited transcripts of his onstage interviews from all over the country with some of America’s leading presidential historians and presidential insiders. The response to Talmage’s project in the history community has been amazing. Major recognition of his work has come from the likes of former Secretary of State James A. Baker, III; Pulitzer Prize winners David McCullough and Jon Meacham; New York Times best-selling historians Douglas Brinkley and H.W. Brands; and Emmy Award winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. The country’s leading Abraham Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer may have said it best about the experience of having a seasoned trial lawyer, who knows presidential history inside and out, get answers from the experts in response to the most important questions Americans should have about our leading commanders-in-chief. TALMAGE BOSTON has been a commercial litigator in Dallas, Texas, since 1978 and a shareholder at the Winstead PC law firm since 1997. He’s been recognized in Texas Monthly magazine as a “Texas Super Lawyer” every year since 2003 and named among the “Best Lawyers in America” since 2013. In addition to maintaining his full-time law practice, Talmage has written Raising the Bar: The Crucial Role of the Lawyer in Society (TexasBarBooks 2012, foreword by former US Attorney General Dick Thornburgh); 1939: Baseball’s Tipping Point (Bright Sky Press 2005, foreword by John Grisham); and Baseball and the Baby Boomer (Bright Sky Press 2009, foreword by Frank DeFord). He and his wife Claire live in Dallas and have a son and a daughter. www.brightskypress.com BRIGHT SKY PRESS CATALOG New Releases HEALING ART Don’t Let Anything Ruin Your Day Robert Flatt $34.95 HARDCOVER 978-1-942945-25-3 128 pages 11" x 11" Four Color PHOTOGRAPHY Robert Flatt always held the belief that life is good. When he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, he refused to let the news alter his fundamental perspective. Robert viewed this unexpected hurdle as an opportunity: the gift of time to pursue his artistic interests. Taking vivid photographs of the wonders he had previously overlooked helped him cope, and he realized the power of the beauty he observed could help others, too. Coupled with Robert’s candid, empowering reflections on existence and his illness, the vision of the world revealed in Healing Art urges readers to live in the present, relax and remember that life is good. Despite the nature of our burdens, if we can focus on an image of beauty today, we have not let our challenges define us. And for another day, we have been fully alive and open to the presence of joy. Could we really ask for more? www.brightskypress.com ROBERT FLATT earned his bachelor of arts and masters of science in electrical engineering from Rice University and his MBA from Harvard University. He spent thirty-one years in the oil service industry as an engineer and businessman before he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1999. In the wake of his diagnosis, he left Cameron International Corporation and enrolled in photography courses at Rice University to pursue his passion for photography. His photographs appear in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and have been on permanent display at Rice University, the Katy Prairie Conservancy and many hospitals throughout Houston, including the Neurology Department of the Baylor College of Medicine and Memorial Hermann Hospital. His photography has been selected for exhibition at FotoFest five times since 2008 and for the Houston Center for Photography 32nd Annual Membership Competition. He has self-published two photography books, West Boulevard Night-Herons and Rice’s Owls, which garnered multiple awards. Robert and his wife, Nancy, live in Houston, Texas. They have two children and five grandchildren. 713.533.9300 FALL 2016 SPRING 2017 New Releases ZEN MOMENTS Venerable Master Miao Tsan $24.95 HARDCOVER 978-1-939055-43-9 234 pages 6" x 6" Four Color INSPIRATION In this accessible volume of Zen wisdom, Venerable Master Miao Tsan guides us on a daily pilgrimage toward enlightenment. Religion is the container of ancient knowledge; it constitutes the understanding of life’s fulfillment. However, as this knowledge was been passed down through generations, its essence and value have been contaminated across a spectrum ranging from prejudiced disbelief to blind faith. Understanding our beliefs is an important step towards enlightenment, because what we believe determines what we will do and create, and the situations we will inevitably encounter. Amid the eternally unfolding process of life, a most important lesson is to discover which kind of belief will lead us to light. To complete this lesson, we must first understand the meaning of life. This is not a meaning we define for ourselves, however. The meaning of life is truth. Venerable Master Miao Tsan attempts to guide each seeker toward a deeper understanding of the source and essential nature of our present situation, so that inner change can occur at the fundamental level, we can overcome our selfimposed limitations and create a better life. VENERABLE MASTER MIAO TSAN is the author of Just Use This Mind, The Origin Is Pure, Intrinsic Awakened Nature, and Living Truth: The Path of Light, all originally published in traditional Chinese. The founder and abbot of Vairocana Zen Monastery in Garden Grove, California, he possesses profound insight into the essence of Zen and has dedicated himself to its propagation and practice.
