A Year of Firsts
Annual Report 2006-2007
Louis J. Koch Family Children’s Museum of Evansville
Dear Friends:
Childhood is full of many exciting “firsts” – first words, first
day of school, first ride on a bicycle. Such milestones are
central to our development and growth.
cMoe experienced many great firsts this past fiscal year as we
began a new chapter in our ongoing commitment to inspire a
community of lifelong learners. The Museum introduced a number of
new exhibits, engaging programs and innovative partnerships after opening
its doors September 29, 2006.
We welcomed children and their families from throughout the Tri-State
region and connected with underserved families from various backgrounds.
Attendance exceeded expectations, and the demand for field trips and other
programs has proven the critical need within the Tri-State for cMoe’s engaging
and informal learning environment.
This first year has allowed cMoe to become an integral part of many households and schools. We consider it a
great honor and privilege to share in the lives of each and every family and classroom. Each day we look
forward to welcoming new guests and greeting new friends, as well as seeing the familiar faces of our return
visitors.
We wish to offer our most heartfelt thanks to our donors who understand the importance of childhood
and ensure the Museum’s continued work. By investing in cMoe’s exhibits, programs and initiatives, you are
impacting the lives of children while strengthening family and community bonds. This report highlights the
Museum’s growth and impact in the first year of new life. Please join us in looking back on the fiscal year with
pride and looking forward to our future of deepened impact for children and families in our community and
beyond.
Sincerely,
Amy Kolleck

Our History
In 1990, the Junior League of
Evansville, under the leadership of
Karen Donovan Magan, envisioned
a signature project where children
could learn through interactive
educational experiences. Their
dreams became reality when the
Hands On Discovery Children’s
Museum opened in 1994. The
Museum quickly established itself
as a sought-after destination for
families, field trips and birthday
parties. However, the need for a
larger and professionally-developed
children’s museum became clear
when over 3,000 students had to be
turned down during the 2003-2004
school year due to a lack of space.
The Tri-State community expressed
interest and support for a new
museum. In November 2004,
Hands On Discovery permanently
closed in order to focus on an
intense Capital Campaign and
renovations for the new museum.
The community confirmed
their expressed interest through
unprecedented support, generous
grants, donations and gifting of the
former Central Library.
Multiple forums were held during
the two years of construction to
allow teachers, parents and children
to contribute ideas regarding the
new museum, making it a true
community organization. The
Capital Campaign concluded with
a tally exceeding $6.2 million. On
September 29, 2006, after hard
work and careful planning, the
Louis J. Koch Children’s Museum
of Evansville, fondly referred to
as cMoe, opened its doors to the
public!
Our Mission Statement
To spark the curious minds and imaginations of children
and their families through dynamic exhibits, programs
and activities.
Our Core Values
• We believe in children.
We promote and contribute to a network of resources that
support the development of children, youth and families. We
strive to inspire our youth to become leaders and productive
citizens.
• We value learning through play.
We believe in education for ourselves and for all whom we
serve. We aim to inspire children to develop and embrace
the lifelong habits of creative expression, critical thinking,
innovative problem-solving and solid decision making.
• We value family.
We believe in the power of family learning. We provide a rich
set of playful exhibits and collaborative experiences in a safe
and welcoming museum space. We foster dynamic family
learning experiences.
• We are professional.
We strive to learn and meet the highest standards of
excellence. We are intentional and disciplined in our actions.
• We are obligated to be good stewards of our resources.
We are and continue to be an organization that is fiscally
responsible and nurtures talent and passion for children’s
learning and development.
“It was the best day
of my life!”

Exhibit Highlights
cMoe opened in Fall 2006 in the renovated former Downtown Central Library building with 18,000 square feet of
exhibits. The Museum hosts four main galleries plus a multimedia space entitled the Freedom Gallery. Exhibits
were designed in response to the state curriculum and educational standards for Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois.
In addition to the distinct galleries, cMoe has a number of exhibits and experiences throughout the Museum
including a playable laser harp near our gift shop, a historic dollhouse and a unique, interactive introduction to
the statements and legacy of Mark Twain. Highlights of the dynamic galleries can be found below.
Freedom Gallery
The focus of the Freedom Gallery is freedom of expression. It is a multimedia space which includes a performance stage for storytellers, small
musical groups and other performance artists.
Work Smart
The Work Smart Gallery focuses on engineering skill development
and the freedom to build and create. The exhibits in this gallery give
children an inside view into the technical and mechanical side of our
world. In this gallery, children have the opportunity to estimate their
weight and construct a bridge. In addition, the deconstruction tables offer
a variety of activities that focus on problem solving.
Live Big
In the Live Big Gallery, children explore the human body in a space that promotes the freedom to make choices.
Activities in this gallery include opportunities to explore the senses, test reaction time, get a true perspective on
the phenomenal length of the small intestine and much more.
Speak Loud
Children naturally gravitate toward the creative arts in their everyday play. The Speak Loud Gallery encourages
children to dramatize a familiar story, play instruments from around the world (and their own backyard) and
express their feelings through the creative arts.
Quack Factory
Water play, development of gross and fine motor skills and working toward
a common goal are all found in the Quack Factory. This exhibit, spanning
2 1/2 floors in the Museum, allows children the opportunity to investigate
water movement, force and motion, as well as how pulleys and other simple
machines help make work easier.
cMoe’s First Temporary Exhibit
cMoe welcomed its first temporary exhibit Memorial
Day weekend 2006. Bones: An Exhibit Inside You,
developed by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis,
demonstrated to children what bones in animals look like.
Similar in nature to cMoe’s other hands-on exhibits, Bones transformed the lobby
and Freedom Gallery through September 16, 2007. Signs for Bones were in both
Spanish and English. Mesker Park Zoo & Botanical Gardens and cMoe partnered
to present scavenger hunts at both locations for children to learn new facts about
animals and their bones.

Children are Born Learning
cMoe’s programs serve as an educational and cultural resource for families, schools, educators and local
communities in a variety of fun and innovative ways. From our daily field trips to our seasonal camps, the
Museum’s programs offer a number of opportunities to advance a child’s natural curiosity and love for learning.
Field Trips
cMoe field trips provide informal learning experiences that complement classroom instruction. Educational
experiences at cMoe include programming in science, math, health, fine arts and language arts, as well as a
strong emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking. Two types of field trips are available to groups from
schools, organizations, preschools and day care facilities. The first is an Explorer Field Trip that enables children
to explore the Museum on their own and interact with the hands-on exhibits. The second is a Focused Field
Trip, which adds an experiential learning workshop that expands on concepts integrated in the Museum exhibit
environments. Due to generous gifts from our community, cMoe is able to offer scholarships to schools and
organizations that serve children in need.
Camps
cMoe offers a full range of camps during the summer and one week of camp during
spring break. Weekly themes in the summer for children aged 6-11 included Mad
Scientist Lab, Art Extravaganza, World Traveler, Gadgets and Gizmos, cMoe Inventor and
On the Air. Half-day summer camps for children aged 4-6 included Let’s Pretend and
Creature Features. Scholarships for local agencies that serve children in need provided
camp opportunities for children who otherwise would not be able to attend.
Toddler Classes
Toddlers have a special place at cMoe, and two areas in the Museum are dedicated
to our youngest visitors and their special adults. The Work Smart Gallery hosts
an area where children aged 5 and under can build Lego structures, participate
in dump and fill activities at the sand table and construct the walls to their very
own house! In Drip Drop Spot, located in the Speak Loud Gallery, children
aged 3 and under practice gross motor skills or snuggle up on the couch for
a story. Special programs during the fiscal year included Toddler Tunes, Read to
Me and Move It! Each weekly program during the school year emphasized the
importance of parents and children learning together. Toddler Tunes presented
activities to nurture the development of the very young child through music. Read to
Me introduced age-specific literature. Move It! gave young children the opportunity to practice valuable
movement activities in a safe environment.
Weekend Programs
Weekends at cMoe were filled with special events and activities! The first Saturday of the month introduced
Weather Wonders by the 14WFIE Storm Team and Past Times, Past Tunes with MaryAnne Mathews. Area artists
were showcased on the second Saturday of the month, and children were invited to try the new art medium
as well. On the third Saturday of the month, area scientists visited to present hands-on science activities and
experiments. Community health partners presented healthy habits and living on the fourth Saturday of the
month. Every Sunday spotlighted a performing artist—either by kids or for kids.
Free Family Fun Night
The first Thursday of each month presented a fun-filled evening with Free Family Fun Night from 5-8 p.m., made
possible by St. Mary’s Medical Center. Not only was the Museum open late (and for free!), partners from St. Mary’s
also presented fun health activities and programs throughout the evening. cMoe and St. Mary’s are proud to
continue this program this fiscal year.
