We e n c o u n t e r C h r i s t i n Wo r d , Wo r s h i p , S e r v i c e a n d C o m m u n i t y . 27 MARCH 2016 Reverend Thomas J. Major PASTOR St. Ann’s Parish Reverend John P. Ryan St. John Neumann’s Parish SENIOR PRIEST TREASURES DRAWN INTO THE STORY "We are witnesses!" The scripture readings for Easter Sunday concentrate on details reported by eyewitnesses. Listen carefully and you will be drawn into the stories yourself. Peter reports the good works Jesus did, his death on the cross, and his resurrection. The passage from John's Gospel has us running to the empty tomb with Peter and John and peering inside to see the cloths used to cover Jesus' body. Psalm 118 sums up our response: "It is wonderful in our eyes!" What resurrection details do we see in our lives today? How have we died to our old lives and been raised up again with Jesus? Let us pay attention to the new life around us. It is wonderful in our eyes. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. In most places, we hardly attain the goal of gathering all who are in Christ by baptism. Look around today and see what a Big Sunday looks like! Our tradition speaks of remembering, anamnesis, as the antidote to “amnesia,” the tragic forgetting of who God is and who we are as God’s most beloved creation. On this Easter day, we are at our very best. We remember who God is, and we remember who we are in God’s eyes: beloved sons and daughters, reborn to eternal life in baptismal waters. We rekindle our candles and reclaim our baptismal promises. As a “Big Sunday,” today also reflects the character of festivity and leisure that should mark every Lord’s Day. We wear “Sunday best” today, and we may take some time, especially in the northern states, to stroll through a budding garden. It is truly a “Big Sunday,” and how different our lives would be if we took its values and traditions forward into all the Sundays of our lives. -James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. WE BEGINNING AND END Faith is the beginning and the end is love. REMEMBER YOU, O RISEN LORD -St. Ambrose We remember you, O risen Lord, New Covenant at the feast of the cross. Your resurrection dresses the table for the bread of heaven and the cup of salvation. Blessed are you! ~From Come, Lord Jesus by Lucien Deiss, CSSp, copyright © 1976, 1981, Lucien Deiss. Alleluia! Easter is always, but especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the victory of God’s gentle but invincible mercy raising up Jesus, “faithful witness, the first-born of the dead” (Revelation 1:5), “first-born among many brothers [and sisters]” (Romans 8:29), conquering death in all its forms, in all of us in the human Family. In Luke’s Vigil Gospel, heavenly messengers send the women forth: “Remember what [Jesus] said to you” (Luke 24:6). In John’s Gospel, the empty tomb likewise “sends forth” Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the Beloved Disciple, who believe though they do not fully understand. Finally, Luke’s evening “Emmaus” Gospel sends us forth, as “missionaries of mercy,” assuring us that we will encounter the Risen Lord, today and every day, in “the stranger” we meet along life’s journey, in “the Word that makes our hearts burn within us,” and “in the breaking of bread”. In John’s Easter morning Gospel, the Church proclaims a heartfelt welcome for all of us, whoever we are and however we’ve arrived here. For in John’s characters, all of us, believers and doubters, are present at the empty tomb. Consider Mary Magdalen. Renowned for loving Jesus, the empty tomb doesn’t “prove” to Mary that Jesus is risen, only missing. So we, with many contemporaries, even fellow believers, sometimes may have experienced as Mary did the world “still dark” and Jesus absent, admitting with Mary, “We don’t know where Jesus is!” Or, like Peter and “the disciple whom Jesus loved” and who “both ran,” we may be eager to believe. But Peter once “ran” in the opposite direction, three times denying Jesus—another failure some of us can relate to. Even “the beloved disciple,” loyal to the very foot of the cross, who “saw and believed,” cannot yet clearly define that belief, for this Easter Gospel concludes, “They did not yet understand.” The Gospel for Easter this year reminds me of little children. Mary of Magdala runs from the tomb when she sees it has been opened. Then Peter and the other disciple race each other to the tomb. The other one wins the race but Peter goes in first (John 20:1–5). I can picture the disciple stopping suddenly and Peter running into him, tripping and ending up in the tomb. But putting slapstick aside, there is another way they are like children. Remember the Gospel about St. Thomas, who would not believe Jesus’ resurrection until he could see him? Compare that to the disciple in today’s reading, who “saw [the empty tomb] and believed” (John 20:9). That is real faith. For all he knew, someone could have taken Jesus’ body and left the cloths behind. But he must have remembered Jesus saying that he would rise again. That is the kind of faith we find in a little child. Children will believe in things they cannot see, especially if there is a good reason. We “bribe” them into believing in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy by giving them Christmas presents or money under the pillow. They will also believe in Someone real who they cannot see. If we teach them that God made them and loves them, if we love them ourselves and teach them to love others, they will have good reasons to believe in God. As they get older, we can teach them how to pray, save money for the poor, visit the sick, or volunteer to help the homeless. We can reinforce what they learn in religion class and encourage them as they prepare for First Communion or confirmation. Jesus didn’t say that only children could enter the Kingdom. He said we must become like children if we want to enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3). What he means is that not only can we help teach children how to have faith, we can also learn from them about faith. Becoming like children does not mean being selfish or stubborn, throwing tantrums when we don’t get our way. Those are childish behaviors that we put aside. Instead, we can keep a child-like faith and trust in God. Teaching them about God is a great way to help our own faith to grow. By giving them real examples of God’s love for them, they will continue to believe long after they have given up the fairy tales of childhood. Walk for Hunger The is an annual tradition at St. Ann’s! Join caring friends and neighbors while raising money for those struggling to make ends meet in our parishes. This 5 mile walk each Spring is a community response to hunger in the Delaware River Valley. Walkers from local churches and the community collect pledges to support the fight against hunger. The walk begins at Peck’s Market in Eldred and proceeds down Route 55 and across the river into Shohola. The “finish line” is St. Ann’s Church, where walkers share an after-walk celebration. The Walk for Hunger has collected thousands of dollars for local food pantries. This year’s Walk in on Saturday, April 16th. The walk begins at 9:00am. Contact the Parish Office at 570832-4275 for more information about the Walk for Hunger.
