Volume 29, Issue 4 April 2014 Upcoming Events Thu., Apr. 3rd—Golfweek Sr Am 3 p.m. course open Sat., Apr. 5th— 4 p.m.—Meet the Candidates 5 p.m.—NCAA Final Four The monthly newsletter for country club members Presidents Message – Bill Wiebking Sun., Apr. 6th—Barn Dinner Theater Spring seems to be having a difficult time springing into full swing. We continue to experience the wrath of Mother Nature and her cruel treatment of the weather. But, in spite of the weather, we managed to host the one day CGA Amateur Tournament on March 23rd. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the club’s St. Patrick’s Day Tournament earlier in the month. Hopefully, if the weather cooperates, we will be able to enjoy the busy April schedule of golf and social events to kick off the new season. Fri., Apr. 11th—Casual Friday It’s April 2014 and its time to close the books on another year. The last two years have seen many changes with ups and downs in the process for changing the clubs business model. It has not been easy for many of our members who didn’t want to see or embrace change. We understand those feelings totally. However, the alternatives to ensure our future success were rapidly becoming limited. Sat., May 3rd—Kentucky Derby golf tournament Starting off the new year there are still issues to be resolved, to include our cart paths, building maintenance, F&B and the most pressing issue of all facing the club is the under paid sales tax issue. As a club we have to address how we are going to pay this additional unexpected debt. First and foremost, as we wind down the year and my second term as your President, I cannot begin to express my feelings for, and the total support I have received from, my wife, Darlene. She is truly my rock and a saint for putting up with me. And, I absolutely want to express my deepest respect and admiration to every board member who has served over the past two years for standing by their convictions to help bring about the changes that the club needs to be successful in the future. ―Thank You‖ all. Member support is crucial if our club is going to succeed. And, last but certainly not least, I’d like to thank our staff for their dedication and hard work to help get us on the right path and keeping our club going strong. In closing, please be sure to attend the candidate’s night on Saturday, April 5th at 4 p.m. Meet the candidates and learn firsthand what their ideas are to help the club moving forward in 2014. I hope to see everyone at our Annual meeting on April 27th. Thanks for your continued support Bill MEET THE CANDIDATES Members will have an opportunity to ―Meet the Candidates‖ for SLCC Board of Directors on April 5, 2014. Ed Dunn, Chairman of the 2014 Nominating Committee Congratulations to Diane Boston. Diane won the low net score on Sunday, March 23rd in the CGA one-day tournament at Seven Lakes Country Club. The weather was miserable, and the competition was fierce, including playing against a lady golfer who is a +1 handicap. Diane won 2nd low gross with a 92. The +1 handicap golfer shot an 88. Low net qualifies her for the Championship round in December. Congratulations Diane and go get them in December. 2 Mike’s Monthly Memo (MMM) Golf · · Another negative month in Feb against budget…mostly weather related March has had several good weekends…excluding St Patty Day and this past week. We always appreciate your continued support 3 TREASURER’S REPORT FINANCIAL COMMENTARY As expected the Club suffered a loss in February. The loss was greater than anticipated due to the lousy weather here in paradise. The weather had a negative impact on all areas of revenues. Snow, rain, and cold make it tough to sign up new members, sell premier plans, and it suppresses course revenues, restaurant and pro shop sales. If there was any good news, it was management’s ability to hold labor and departmental expenses below budget. This includes about $3,000 in repairs to the awning. Employees are sent home if there is no work and we keep scrutinizing all costs. Last year I told the Board that the first six months of 2014 would be critical to our well being and we would have a better idea of our future after that period. The weather has been devastating to our revenues. For the first two months our revenues are some $27k under budget. Golf courses in our area don’t expect January and February to be good months but they are normally better than what we experienced. Additionally, normal expectations are that revenues start an uptrend in March. You know how bad March weather has been. Because of the poor first two months and March not looking all that good, we have further tightened our spending. Spending that is necessary to keep our course in top shape will go on as well as needed repairs to keep operations going. Most other spending will be placed on hold until we see how revenues shape up in April, May, and June. Mike has been working hard to market SLCC and we feel confident his work will increase our revenues but becoming an unhidden gem won’t happen overnight. Members were advised of our sales tax situation. We are still working on the purchase side (use tax) of the calculations. Although the final number won’t be known until the NC Department of Revenue concludes their review, I expect there will be a significant impact to our cash balance. This is another reason we must take actions to conserve our cash. Following is a summary of financial results. Financial statements are available for member review in the office and you can always ask questions. 4 SUMMARY FINANCIAL RE- February Actual TOTAL GROSS REVENUES TOTAL EXPENSES LEASE COST & MGT FEES OTHER INCOME EARNINGS B/4 INT, TAX & DEPREC INTEREST, DEPREC & TAXES NET INCOME (LOSS) FOOD & BEVERAGE REVENUES FOOD & BEVERAGE OPERATING INCOME FOOD & BEVERAGE GROSS MARGIN $ 52,240 February Budget $ 68,844 TYD Actual $ 96,580 YTD Budget $ 123,392 67,214 77,319 132,852 151,969 8,991 8,679 18,591 17,358 215 222 346 512 ((23,751) (16,932) (54,518) (45,423) 12,384 13,046 25,457 25,772 (79,974) $ (71,195) 16,976 22,825 $ (36,135) $ (29,978) $ 9,793 15,025 (1,161) 678 (6,107) (2,448) 60.4% 64.8% 57.5% 64.9% GREENS FEES & CART FEES 17,642 22,534 25,896 34,997 MEMBER DUES 23,255 26,885 46,913 53,770 1,062 2,500 $ 2,379 $ 5,000 547 750 $ 1,274 $ 1,500 TOTAL LABOR 35,355 39,566 76,596 79,132 TOTAL DEPARTMENTAL EXPENSES 36,740 39,400 66,853 78,686 PRO SHOP SALES PRO SHOP GROSS MARGIN 5 Pinetop Results The SLCC ladies played at Pinehurst #3 on Monday, March 24. It was a cold day, greens were tricky with false fronts, slow putting. Seven Lakes Ladies started off the season tied for fifth place with a total of nine points. Winning points for SLCC were: Diane Boston 2 points Kristen Foster 2 points Edna Oliver 2 points Darlene Weibking 2 points Linda Strohmenger 1 point Game Night—March 28th The second ―Game Night‖ on March 28 was attended by 42 enthusiastic game players. This function gives friends, neighbors, members and guests the opportunity to get together and play their favorite games without having to clean their homes or prepare snacks. However, if this event is going to continue we need more people to come and enjoy the evening. We are evaluating the 2 Game Nights we’ve had so far and will be announcing another on April 25 if it is determined to be feasible. The Polish Country Club Championship Zig and Stosh are standing on the 18th tee at their Polish Country Club. They are the final twosome in the Club Championship and are tied for the lead. The 18th hole is a beautiful par four with a deep valley descending to a dogleg right. Bot Zig and Stosh hit long, straight tee shots which disappear down in the valley. A short time later, the fore caddie appears at the top of the hill and announces that both balls are within 6 inches of each other, but there’s a problem. Both of the golf balls are Titleist #4’s. Zig and Stosh look at each other and realize that they had not informed each other as to what kind of ball they were playing, nor its number. They quickly descend into the valley and, sure enough, their two Titleist golf balls are right next to each other at the bottom of the valley in the middle of the fairway. Stosh looks at Zig and says, ―We’d better get a ruling from a tournament official to straighten this out. We don’t want to be disqualified for making a mistake and hitting the wrong ball, and we are tied for the lead. A rules official appears and examines the two balls. He then looks up at Zig and Stosh and asks, ―Which one of you is playing the orange ball?‖ 6 Social Committee Report The combined Nine and Dine and Casual Friday had a total of 86 people in attendance. The fried chicken was enjoyed by all. Unfortunately the Saint Patrick’s Day tournament and dinner were cancelled due to terrible weather for golf and lack of participation for dinner. The meal less Game Night on Feb. 28 had 47 people in attendance. While everyone had a good time, there were enough people who did not buy anything from the bar that the evening was a losing proposition for the F & B department and cannot be an ongoing event if that trend continues. Events scheduled for April are: The Final Four BB Tournament in the Tufts Grill on April 5 with a Bar Menu; The Barn Dinner Theater trip on April 6; Casual Friday with a meatless pasta (for Lent) main course on April 11; and if the Game Night in March has a better bottom line another Game Night on April 25. Looking forward to May the Casual Friday on May 2nd will have a Mexican Theme for Cinco De Mayo with a Taco Bar and Margarita specials. May 3rd in honor of the Kentucky Derby there will be a ―Derby‖ golf tournament followed by Mint Juleps in the Tufts Grill. On Mothers’ Day, May 11th there will be a delicious dinner in the dining room. And the month will end with the Memorial Day Golf Scramble and picnic. Watch for email blasts and fliers for all of these activities. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND THE RECYLCING AREA FOR ALUMINUM CANS HAS BEEN MOVED FROM THE MAINTENANCE AREA TO THE CART BARN.
