LUND – A thousand years of history, all in
walking distance
Lund is a vibrant city of contrasts. Here, among cobblestones and half-timbered houses, you meet people
from all over the world and there is always something going on. The University and its close on 40,000
students make a clear impact on the city, with student burlesques, student bars and lively cafes.
The Middle Ages is ever present in Lund's beautiful city centre, but the future is being created just a
stone's throw away.
Historic Lund
On the outskirts of Lund
Lund is one of the oldest cities in Sweden, founded by
the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard around 990 AD. At
that time Skåne belonged to Denmark and remained
so for over 600 years.
Flyinge, on the outskirts of Lund, is one of the world's
oldest operational stud farms. It is a unique equestrian
centre frequented by both horse enthusiasts and people
interested in history. Dalby, just 15 minutes to the east
by bus, boasts the oldest stone church in the Nordics.
The Holy Cross Church is beautifully situated on the hill
overlooking the plain and the sea in the
distance.
When you approach the city you see the cathedral
towers – locally called "Lunna pågar" from a distance.
Lund Cathedral is attracting around 700,000 visitors
per year. This magnifient cathedral is the best example of Romanesque architecture in Scandinavia, with
beautiful sacred stained glass windows and an outstanding pulpit from the late 16th Century.
The Future
Two of the world’s leading materials research facilities
are currently under construction in Lund. The two facilities will be of decisive importance for future scientific
and industrial development in both material science and
life science.
Just a stone's throw from the cathedral is the world's
second oldest open-air museum, Kulturen. The museum consists of two exciting areas with historic buildings and gardens. Step into the houses and experience life in the city and in the countryside, from the
Middle Ages to the 1930s
