THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Benjamin T. Rome School of Music 2016/2017 SEASON music.cua.edu FALL MUSICAL City of Angels Book by Larry Gelbart • Music by Cy Coleman • Lyrics by David Zippel OCT. 28 AND 29, 2016 • 7:30 P.M. OCT. 30, 2016 • 2 P.M. HARTKE THEATRE Tickets Required From Real to Reel When Hollywood offers New York novelist Stine the opportunity to adapt his books into a film, he packs up and moves to the home of perennial sunshine, palm trees, and stars. City of Angels moves between the beautiful Technicolor world of Hollywood and Stine’s glamorous film noir-in-progress of the same title. While Stine’s movie plays out in black and white, Stine finds the dangerous temptations of the world of Los Angeles — the distraction of women, the lure of fame, and the artistic compromises being made right and left — all too colorful. FALL OPERA THE OUTCASTS OF POKER FLAT A new American opera Music and Libretto by Andrew Earle Simpson Based on the short story by Bret Harte NOV. 17, 18, AND 19, 2016 • 7:30 P.M. NOV. 20, 2016 • 2 P.M. WARD RECITAL HALL Tickets Required PROVING THEIR METTLE! In the wilds of California’s snowy mountains, six characters from different worlds are thrown together and face a common danger. How they respond reveals their true natures. Having experienced rejection and betrayal, the members of this isolated band of travelers form friendships that provide love and acceptance. This is one of the classic tales that first brought national acclaim for author Bret Harte. It has been the basis of at least five films and one play. Andrew Earle Simpson’s contemporary classical score draws on American folk and country music as well as church and parlor songs. SPRING MUSICAL Little Women THE BROADWAY MUSICAL Book by Allan Knee • Music by Jason Howland • Lyrics by Mindi Dickstein Based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott FEB. 17 AND 18, 2017 • 7:30 P.M. FEB. 19, 2017 • 2 P.M. FEB. 24 AND 25, 2017 • 7:30 P.M. FEB. 26, 2017 • 2 P.M. WARD RECITAL HALL Tickets Required From Age to Age Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, the musical focuses on the four March sisters — brassy Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth — and their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts while the family patriarch is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Intercut with the vignettes in which their lives unfold are several recreations of the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio. At its core it is a musical about family and the love that binds them together against all odds. Lucia di Lammermoor SPRING OPERA Sung in Italian with English supertitles Music by Gaetano Donizetti Libretto by Salvadore Cammarano Based on Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor MARCH 23, 24, AND 25, 2017 • 7:30 P.M. MARCH 26, 2017 • 2 P.M. HARTKE THEATRE Tickets Required Proving Their Love! In Scotland’s Lammermuir Hills, a young couple, not unlike Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, fight fate and family to be together. After Lucia is tricked into marrying a man she doesn’t love, her wedding celebration quickly turns to tragedy. As with Shakespeare’s star-crossed pair, the surviving lover is left to join the other in the only possible way. Scott’s epic historical novel depicts a time when women were but pawns in dynastic chess games. Donizetti’s passionate, bel canto tour-de-force contains two of the operatic literature’s most memorable soprano arias. APRIL 9, 2017 • 3 P.M. HERITAGE HALL Tickets Required ANYTHING YOU CAN DO, WE CAN DO TOO! Join the Opera and Musical Theatre divisions as they switch roles and celebrate the great traditions in each other’s repertoire.
