A letter from our CEO
Hello to our West Ohio Food Bank family from your new CEO. I have to honestly say that it has been a challenge
trying to fill the shoes of your previous CEO, Bambi Markham. What she has built here, with all of your support, is
truly amazing and humbling. So, fortunately, I have a financially sound, well functioning base to work from. My
challenge now will be building on this firm foundation to meet the ever-increasing need.
Many of us know intuitively that people can’t thrive and kids can’t learn on an empty stomach, but far too many in
our region know this because it is a reality of their everyday life. The face of hunger could easily be yours or mine
with just one job loss or major health care crisis, however, the encouraging news is that together we can solve
hunger. Congressman McGovern recently said that “...we can end hunger now, if we make a commitment to do so.
We have the resources. We know what it takes. We just have to muster will to end hunger once and for all.” This
will be our on-going vision at YOUR West Ohio Food Bank (WOFB) until it becomes a reality: A hunger-free West
Central Ohio.
We currently have approximately 78,000 individuals across our 11 county service area who are considered “food
insecure”, defined as “a lack of a consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life.” In order to bring this
group to a place where they are food secure, with your help, we will need to find a way to distribute over 13,000,000
meals in our region. (Map The Meal Gap 2012 from www.feedingamerica.org) In 2012, WOFB distributed just over
5 million meals, an increase from 2011, when we distributed just under 5 million meals, meaning that we helped to
fill roughly 44% of the gap.
Fortunately, we can still make a donated dollar stretch a long way, so that almost everyone in our region has the
ability to make an impact. We have even seen groups of elementary school children conduct fund raisers. For a
donated dollar, we can bring 25 pounds of donated food (20 meals) to our docks. This pays our transportation costs
for bringing the food to our warehouse. Once the food is here, like with a retail grocery distribution center, there are
many costs involved in managing, storing (some in our 7,500 sq. ft. freezer/cooler), and distributing the inventory to
a member charity. Once the food reaches a pantry or meal site, a donated dollar is still providing 8 meals (just under
10 pounds) of food.
So, anyone in our region who has the capacity to give even a dollar a month, can ensure that we are able to give
pantries and meal sites in their area 8 meals each month for one of their neighbors in need. Currently, we must ask
that our member charities help to share some of our distribution costs based on how much food we provide to them.
However, my goal is that, with increased awareness across our region, and increased participation by all of you in
our fundraising efforts, we will be able to decrease the modest fees we must charge our agencies, which means more

West OHIO FOOD BANK
Programs
During the ‘11-’12 fiscal year, the West Ohio Food Bank provided 6,824,175 through a network of over 170+ smaller member
charities directly feeding 681,842 people annually throughout 11 counties. Our service area includes Allen, Auglaize, Hancock,
Hardin, Mercer, Paulding, Putnam, Seneca, Shelby, Van Wert, and Wyandot counties.
The Food Bank must take advantage and consistently search out food and household items [accomplished through affiliation and
membership within the West OHIO FOOD BANK - Network]. The following programs are provided:
Feeding America (F.A.) Donated Program – Offers donated foods from national companies (and national companies with
local presence), which may carry a service maintenance charge of up to 18¢ per pound.
Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks and State Legislative monies we are able to provide:
Fresh Produce Initiative Program - Offers unprecedented donations of fresh fruits and vegetables, chickens & eggs from
small family farmers throughout Ohio. WOFB distributed over 1.7 million pounds of produce.
Ohio Food Program – Nutritious shelf-stable food includes high protein items such as peanut butter, ground meats, tuna
fish, received throughout the year for emergency pantries/emergency meal sites. WOFB distributed 272,638 pounds of
food through this program.
USDA – Federal Commodities Program – Nutritious variety of food items to supplement agencies’ “food mix” in meals
‘bagged up’ by emergency providers or ‘served hot’ at meals sites provided monthly during the year. WOFB distributed
over 1.3 million pounds of USDA foods.
Reclamation and Recovery Program - Currently operated in a room dedicated to sorting, cleaning, repackaging food into
boxes. Grocery store items are received from Meijer, Wal-Mart, Kroger and other food outlets [through membership with
F.A.] as well as all food/grocery items received through local food drives. All items received as a result of food drives by
schools, organizations and businesses throughout the year are processed through this program.
Food Rescue Program - Currently WOFB picks up unsalable donated products from 2 Meijer, 1 Aldi, 12 Wal-Mart, 4 Kroger
and 1 Marsh Store 3 days a week. WOFB also periodically picks up food rescue items from other grocery retail outlets in
our service area.
Mobile Food Pantry - Started 10 years ago to deliver quantities of food (as much as 10,000 lbs.) to designated
distribution sites [so that a church or other qualifying non-profit organization can distribute those goods to needy families]
in a farmers market-like atmosphere from folding tables set up in their parking lot for the occasion. This enables willing
groups become significant players in meeting their area’s need without burdening them with the need for a permanent food
storage/distribution facility, or the need for volunteers to drive to Lima to pick up food. [The fee charged for this service
is only pennies on the dollar compared to the value of the food.]
Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) Senior Citizens Food Box –- CSFP is a federal funded program for people
who are 60+ years of age and whose household income is 130% or less of the federal poverty guidelines. Each month we
provide a 32-40 lb box of nutritious food to 1,400 seniors throughout WOFB’s 11 county service area.
WOFB Senior Citizens Food Box - WOFB has been providing seniors in Lima/Allen County with food boxes the past 10
years. We currently provided 200 seniors (50+ years old at 200% of poverty), living independently, and in eleven senior
housing complexes with nutritious food items each month to supplement their pantries. Limited funding restricts the
expansion outside of Allen County. Currently United Way of Greater Lima (UWGL) helps fund this program.
Weekend Back-Pack -During ’11-’12 academic year, WOFB provided approximately 1,800 elementary students in 5 schools
in the Lima City Area, 4 elementary schools in the Allen County area, 2 schools in the Findlay (Hancock County), 2 schools in
Kenton, Ridgemont (Hardin County). 1 school in Fostoria (Seneca County), 2 schools in the Cridersville, Wapakoneta
(Auglaize County), a back-pack on Fridays to take home nutritious food. These students are on free/reduced lunch &/or
breakfasts. Without the Pack-Pack Program most of children may not eat from lunch on Friday until they arrive at school
on Monday morning. Due to the success, WOFB provides summer bags (10 wks) to 500 students in the Lima City area.
Disaster Relief – As a partner of F.A., when a disaster happens in one of our service areas, WOFB is able to acquire needed
supplies to provide to those who are affected by the disaster. This not only includes food items but cleaning, water, and
other miscellaneous items that may be needed.
