We have had some fantastic developments within the company and some great new
labels come on board. As well as letting you know what's happening we wanted to
give you an insight in to some of the people and labels behind the music. We hope
you enjoy the newsletter and would like to thank you for your continued support and
being part of the Cygnus Music family.
Lewis Sinclair - Managing Director
Kmag Recommends Cygnus
One of the leading online dance magazine’s ‘Kmag’, recently published an
excellent article on ‘How to Run a Digital Label. Writer John Methodus provides
the perfect insight in to what's involved, what a label should do and how they
should do it. The article also covers Distribution and Cygnus Music was
recommended as a distributor of choice.

Leading Advice on PR
Did you know that if you supply a Press Release with your music, you massively increase the chance
of it being picked up by the stores for special features? We contacted a number of the major
magazines who feature music to find out why a press release is so
important. Here’s what the PR boss at Out of Hand magazine said.
From Nigel at Out of Hand Magazine
“Press releases are important to highlight the key points about the
release they go alongside. Us journo’s are under huge time pressures on a
daily basis, so anything that can make our life easier is likely to be
appreciated and be more likely to get editorial space.
We get loads and loads of things sent to us on a daily basis and we haven’t got the physical time or will to
listen to everything that comes our way, hence press releases work well to give us an idea of whether
something is suitable for us and our readership and worth following up or not. People taking short cuts and
assuming journo’s don’t need press releases are only cheating themselves and selling themselves short – it’s
like getting something from Ikea without the instructions – you can figure it out yourself given time, but it’s
much quicker and easier to follow the instructions!”
ODT drops Run Away
This month saw the new imprint ODT Muzik release their
incredible single ‘Run Away’ featuring Navigator, Dappamann, Jah
Lingua and Soultrain. This release marks the start of ODT’s
journey here at Cygnus Music along with an exciting and diverse
release catalogue soon to be unleashed into the music industry.

Stepback...
in time with Randall
Jungle & DnB legend Randall currently runs his 2
labels right here at Cygnus Music, the legendary
‘Mac II’, and one of the biggest remix labels in the
industry ‘Stepback Sessions’. The long awaited
Volume 4 has just arrived in the Cygnus office
and offers some huge remixes.
COOL HAND FLEX - MELODY MADNESS ( DJ VAPOUR RMX) / D FORCE - ORIGINAL BADBOY ( C.A.B.L.E RMX)
DOC SCOTT - PAPRADISE LOST ( SOUL INTENT RMX) / LUKE SLATER - KRISPY KRUTON (TANGO RMX)
So we had a chat with the main man to find out the low down on this exciting project!
Q: How did Stepback Sessions come about?
Randall: The project came about when I was given a remix of Dj Stretch's track "Papa Lover. Serum had
previously done a remix of Coolhand Flex's track “Must feel” on Mac II. I had also been sent a remix of Omni
Trio's Renegade Snares in the same week but couldn't get the go ahead for that track. At the time was back
in touch with Lenni De Ice and working on a collaboration with Modular & Outrage (J-tek), and then Sound
Control was sent to me. I thought these tunes need to be out there...so Stepback Sessions was formed. It
was just for a single release but the buzz about the tunes has made us put more release's out to the public!
What's the biggest remix you’ve had done for the project? I think Stretch's Papa Lover was the one I
was getting calls for the most from all dj's.
How do you manage to get the remixes in the first place? Actually from after the 1st release I was
getting a lot of tune's sent to me, remixing tunes from the early 90's jungle drum & bass era!
Are we seeing a revival of Rave Music right now? Yeah I think so even in the Dubstep and Bass Music
scene, a lot of artists are touching that rave style and some are working in the clubs.
What’s your favourite beverage? A bit of brandy. But a sucker for a Guinness Punch!
What’s good about Cygnus Music?
They're a good set of guys Dan, Lewis and the rest of the staff @ Cygnus. I see that there passionate about
the music and do their hardest to provide a service that your happy with and are always there at the end of
the phone if you have any questions! Keep up the good work guys!

4:20 joins Cygnus
Last month we welcomed the mighty 4:20 Records to Cygnus
Music. 4:20 has been as the forefront of Dubstep music since its
first release back in 2009, with releases from the likes of
Funtcase, Roksonix, Statelapse, Hoax (Genetix) and more. The
label has featured heavily over the airwaves of Radio 1 and
1Xtra along with several high profile features on compilation
albums such as Ministry of Sound and UKF....Superb.
Staff Focus Luke - Head Mastering Eng
In this issue, we focus on our Head Mastering Engineer Luke
Fletcher. Luke has mastered hundreds of releases at Cygnus Music
for pretty much every genre in the Dance and Urban Music scene.
Q: What’s your musical background? Luke: Its starts when I was 4
and was made to take piano lessons which led me to play the violin and
then the drums. Only when I turned 16 did I pick up a guitar and taught
myself to play it. 5 years later after a lot of experimenting, I found myself
playing to 15 thousand people in a band called No Exit. Years later and
many bands on, I got signed with BMG in the band “Saturn 3”. I’ve
worked on and off for Bark Studios and Richard Knowles Sound and
learnt how to make brilliant tea as well as recording skills. I got to make
tea for lots of acts from Creation Records i.e. Primal Scream, Ride, etc. I
have owned and run my own studios since 1994. Using 24-track tape and
all of the outboard goodies you’d expect in a professional studio. The last
thing I could mention is the write-ups I have done for Sound on Sound
....it was a dream realized.
What’s the biggest project you’ve ever worked on? I got the chance to record a sound track for a short
film that went to the Carnes Film Festival. As for artists Primal Scream.
How has the mastering process changed over the years? The mastering process is basically still the

same. The difference being in what is expected from a mastering house. People today in the club/dance world
tend to like maximising their music to be as loud as possible. If it sounds louder then other tracks then the
person tends to think this is better when it’s not sonically. What happened to people just turning the volume
up? Another thing is the software companies selling mastering software which really doesn’t do the job, it’s
basically just a gimmick, which anyone who knows the process, knows the difference.
What’s your favourite piece of hardware?
That’s a hard one. I love my Neve 1080’s, but I also love my Sony BC
desk. I have got a stereo Neumann from the 70’s that I sleep with!
What do you most enjoy about working at Cygnus Music?
Each day I smile to myself knowing how Cygnus started, with me and
Lewis sitting in “The Dog” having a pint n’ chaser, trying to come up
with a name and logo for company over 4 years ago. The company
was Lewis’s dream and I’m just glad that he asked me to join him and
help build the company.

Outlet Focus
One of our recent additions to our repertoire of outlets is the highly
respected record store RedEye Records. After being one of the most
successful vinyl outlets for many years, RedEye have now added
digital content to their site. Its great to see digital media being
offered alongside the traditional platforms of music media, and
offering a specialist service for a number of genres of dance music.
Label Focus
We speak to Basher, Ram Records artist and label
owner of Proximity, about the label that is leading the
way with the modern sound of Deeper DnB.
Q: How did Proximity Recordings come about?
Basher: I formed proximity almost overnight in 2010, the label was
originally intended as an outlet for my close friends who were all making
great beats but couldn't get there break into the scene.
How would you describe the sound of Proximity?
We are defiantly at the deeper end of the spectrum, very minimal with a
techy edge.
What plans to you have for the label over 2013? We have some great artists on board at Proximity, our
main focus is them, we are working on artist albums and more label nights round the world.
After the huge success of your album on Ram Records, what’s next for
Basher? I'm currently working on a follow up album to transmission as well as
some other projects but I can't say much about it yet.
Tell us something about you that we won’t know. Henry VIII is my idol.
How have you found working with Cygnus Music? So far so good!
I couldn't be happier :)

An introduction to BASS Music
The term Bass Music is being used more and more
as the newest sound in Electronic Dance Music, so
we thought what better way to introduce it, than
ask a man at the forefront of this new genre.
Touring the world with the chart topper Redlight
we ask Cygnus Music PR Executive Mikel aka Dread
MC to give us the run down...
Many of you may have heard of the term Bass Music. This
is the current term now hugely used for the multi genre
space of 110 -140bpm of music that has the fusion of
House, Techno, Dubstep, Garage, Rave, Electronic Dance Music, and more.
The term seems to be regularly used for a lot of music that is influenced by a huge variety of sounds that can
be affiliated with different genres, but not be of one specific genre. It is becoming more and more
recognised as a term for the new breed of multi genre production of underground music. Is there an
actual time when Bass Music came about? Some may claim to be from the early Miami bass scene in the
80’s, or did it occur after the huge explosion of Dubstep and the vast
definition of mix forum debates on Dubstep of being, dark, minimal
bass material or tare out chainsaw sounds.
Whether it is dance driven or not, but has the element of bass or
sub within it, and a producer does not want it tagged under one
genre, Bass music or UK bass music is a term that can a recognisable
way to describe it. How ever the term EDM, Electronic dance music
is also the widely used term similar to it, which is more used in the
States.
What ever the case, the music scene is forever evolving and a range of producers are expanding in depth
with production that it is hard to label them under one type of genre. One artist who has had years of
experience and has been at the forefront of the ever changing development in underground music is UK
legend Zed Bias.

A sad day in the music industry
Last month saw the closure of one of the leading distributors, Nu Urban Music.
As well as distribution, NUM were also one of the outlets we have supplied our
content to for many years. We enjoyed a great business relationship with them
and Cygnus Music is sorry to see the end of such an influential company in the
Dance Music scene. There were some fantastic people that worked there and
we wish every one that was involved in NUM all the best for the future.
Daddy Freddy on
Saysell Music
A few weeks ago we were honoured by Reggae legend Daddy
Freddy who popped in to the office with Saysell Music boss
Jamie Irie and none other than the mighty Troy Ellis. Daddy
Freddy is currently working on a hot new single with Jamie for
Saysell Music following the huge success of the first release
which saw remixes by Serial Killaz, J Bostron and IDavid.

A New Dawn
in Music
Q: How did Dawn Raid come together?
Dawn Raid: We initially got together through mixing in the same raving
social circles in Manchester, & realising we had a specific love for the
same type of music. In 2007 we decided to channel our efforts into
working together and honing our skills in the studio... which has led us
to where we are today.
Q: Tell us a bit about your new imprint Hocus Pocus is the name of
our new imprint. We now feel that we have enough of an arsenal of
tracks that will do us justice & represent Drum & Bass properly in the
public domain. Hocus Pocus has been setup to obviously represent us, our close production peoples & the
core musical aspects of DnB & Jungle, paying specific attention to the vibe, creativity & feeling of the music
in its formative years...whilst trying help push the music forward & tie it in with the energy that is clearly
apparent in contemporary Drum & Bass .
Q: Who’s involved with the label? In a production sense, we have already
managed to get current DnB/Jungle don Bladerunner on board for the first
release (Hocus Pocus 001). We also have close links to untold talented
northern & midlands artists who make quality music across many genres whom
we are due to work with over the coming months, which is exciting!
Q: What influences the music you make? A wide range of things from
hearing another piece of music which inspires us to get in the studio &
re-create a vibe, to early hardcore & jungle, to golden age hip hop, to the
weather (it rains a lot in Manny) lol! to life experiences, to hearing a sample &
thinking 'yeah, we can work with that'... it really can be anything that flicks our creative switch at that time.
Big up all at Cygnus & keep a look out for our website www.hpocus.co.uk which is due to drop before the year
is out & will feature many freebies!

Audio Rejectz switch
things up....
Formally known for its earth shattering Dubstep releases, the
mighty Audio Rejects look to switch things up as they move in to
new areas of the EDM scene.
Q: How would you describe the sound of your label?
Bass Music, though we like a bit of Melodic Future Garage too.
Q: What’s been your biggest release?
Dubstep Rejectz Vol 1 - We had plays on Ministry of Sound and BBC Radio 1 with that release.
Q: What projects to you have lined up? We are currently in the process of starting our very own Bass
music event in Leeds, with the goal to make that a success and take the event to other locations in the UK.
Music wise, we are also starting to move more towards Bass Music and
Future Garage.
Q: What do you most enjoy about being with Cygnus Music?
Their team, it's that simple. If I have ever had any issues, needed help or
even just some advice. There has always been someone at Cygnus who has
made time to have a chat with me, either via emails or on the phone. I have
found that it is one distribution company who you can tell, care about
the labels and want them to succeed. For me, what else could a label ask
for?

Q&A with MNP
Q: Describe the sound of MNP Productions
MNP: My sound as a Producer has evolved over time and I have
really embraced bringing live music into my productions, it is hard
to pin point an actual name or sound for my music I just let the
audience decide what they feel from it. I have elements of Hip
Hop, Reggae, Soul, Electronica and House in all my music, which
speaks for itself as being quite broad. I also worked in
collaboration with various bands in a Producer/Engineer role which continuously influences my sounds.
Q: What success have you had with the label?
I originally started the Label because I found myself increasingly becoming
more into an Artist Management role rather than just a Producer, this alone
has been a success because it has given me the opportunity to work with
other Producers and Artists as part of the Label. My first Artist 'Chloe Foy' a
Singer-Songwriter, has already gained a lot of exposure within the first year of
her debut release and has already sparked up interest from Major Labels. I
have a few other Artists and Bands joining the Label within the next few
months and hopefully can build on a strong Artist and Producer Roster.
Q: Who have you worked with in the past? I have worked with the likes of Chloe Foy, Black Canvas
(Rider Shafique & Mr.Melody), Jahdan Blakkamore, Dread, Arianna, Jaimar, Rufio Summers and much more.
Q: What’s next for you as a producer and who are you
working with? I will not be Producing as much material as I have
done before, I will be taking much more of a back seat and working
with different up and coming Producers, putting myself in more of an
Executive Producer role. Currently I am working with Artists 'Chloe
Foy', 'Jaimar' and Production team 'Tier 5', I have other Artists that
will be joining the Label in the next few months so please keep an
eye out for our upcoming releases. Our studio is in a lot of use lately
and we have other collaborations with different Labels/Artists that
will be released in the near future.
Q: How’s things at Cygnus Music?
I have been working with Cygnus for just under a year and things have been going really well. As a new
Record Label starter, Cygnus has helped out us with a lot of problems we encountered within the first few
months of setting up the Label and our past releases. I am looking forward too the relationship we continue
to build with them.

Protect Your Music
New enemy in Music Piracy, the Cyber Locker...
Piracy continues to grow across digital media as the internet provides ever easier ways to search and
download content. The advent of cyber locker services such as Rapidshare, Hotfile, Filesonic and the like
have made accessing your content easier than ever before, one click is all it takes to begin your download.
Uploaders are earning money from giving your content away for free. Each cyber locker platform offers
various schemes to pay uploaders either based on the amount of downloads or by offering profit share on
new subscriptions to their premium service.
This is one of the key reasons why Cyber Lockers are the biggest frontier in piracy right now. Uploading the
latest movie, video game or music album can attract tens of thousands of downloads earning substantial
amounts for the uploader. With this new simplicity, Torrents and P2P piracy are no longer the prime enemy
as both require specialist software and technical know-how.
At Cygnus Music we have set up discounted rates with one of the industries leading companies that target
and eliminate Music Piracy. We use and recommend TID Protect. TID:Protect works differently to other anti
piracy services, their searches are conducted by Human Beings not automated systems. Send a thief to catch
a thief is their mentality - they follow the steps that a would be downloader would follow to locate and
download your content.
They have developed relationships with the most used Cyber Locker sites and have negotiated
Administration rights with their services. This means that they are able to instantly delete source files from
their services without having to wait for them to action DMCA notifications. Approximately 70% of all
content they find is currently removed instantly. In September 2011 they protected no less than three tracks
which went on to make it to the No. 1 spot of the official UK Top 40.

The Legend Returns
Marvellous Cain relaunches RIQ YardRock
at Cygnus Music
Q: A true legend in the scene, but where have you
been for the last 10 years? Marvellous Cain: Well I’ve
been promoting parties, Djing Reggae, R&B, Garage,
Jungle, a bit of Graphic design and just sitting back
watching what's been going on really.
So you’re just about to relaunch RIQ Yardrock, how did this come about?
For the last year or so I’ve been playing at a lot of Old Skool Jungle parties and people started sending me
tunes. A lot of them were good and when I asked them what label they were on a lot of them said they were
unsigned. I heard a lot of stories about people getting disheartened with the scene so I thought hold on I’ve
still got the label. I thought, I can help do something to keep jungle alive and let the new artists get the
respect they should, coz the music about them so I started YARDROCK.
Who’s involved with the project? Me, Rude Bwoy Monty, Mighty Moe,
Kenny Ken, Devious D, Jamie Irie, J Bostron, Jay Jay, Daddy Riff Jnr & Mark C and
many more.
What’s the craziest gig you’ve ever played at? Copenhagen Denmark I
played at this hippy commune and I met Count Dracula... thats what the guys
name was, jokes.
How did you hear about Cygnus Music? Like Marvin Gaye said “I heard it

House Music
Manuscript Records Ukraine is an underground deep, disco, funky, jazzy
house independent label here at Cygnus Music. We spoke with label
boss Vincent Inc’ to get the low down on this hugely popular and groundbreaking imprint.
Q: How would you describe the sound of your label in 3 words?
Deniz Gocmen
Deeper than DEEP!
Q: Which has been your biggest release so far? Oh, it's impossible too
choose one record. I love each release. Manuscript is a label with many tracks
which are classics of electronic music now. We always think at first about quality
of music. Quality=Deep! No matter which style: house, techno, down tempo.
Q: What artists have you worked with?
Pimpzstress Rah
We’ve worked with almost 200 artists only on Manuscript records. Not
including Manuscript’s sub labels: Big mama, Toto & Kotangens records. I’m
proud to say we’ve worked with legendary Tom Moulton (He is the originator of
the Remix, the breakdown section "Disco Break"), and the 12-inch single vinyl
format. His career started in the late 1960s with a self-made tape. He was
responsible for the first continuous-mix
album side ever, on Gloria Gaynor seminal disco album "Never Can Say
Goodbye", earning him the title the "father of the Disco Mix". Among some
of his other success in mixing songs are MFSB "Love Is The Message",
Trammps "Disco Inferno", Grace Jones "La Vie en rose".
Q: What’s hot in the Deep House scene right now and who should
we look out for? If we talk about renditions In Deep House scene, then
right now we can see a return to the sound of the 1997-2001 years. Fat
basslines, dubby, jazzy & disco fluids & of course many vocal works. Manuscript has always been the label which helped the return of the long time
unreleased deep house heads & young talents.
