MAHNKEN “Interventional Radiology (IR) is one of the youngest and most innovative specialties in medicine. Unfortunately the acceptance and use of interventional procedures is often based on an individual interventionalist’s assertiveness instead of clinical data. With clinical decision making being more and more linked with evidence from clinical trials, the generation of high level evidence is of utmost importance. Designing and funding of major trials is beyond the scope of an individual interventionalist. Therefore, it is essential to promote an infrastructure that fosters multinational research in IR. Advancing this process is a key to guarantee a bright future success of IR.” Brief Curriculum Vitae: *1971 Dortmund; 1997 medical degree at the University of Bonn (Germany); 1998 residency in surgery (Hegau-Hospital, Singen, G); 1999 residency in urology (Robert-Koch-Hospital, Gehrden, G); since 05/1999 Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, RWTH-Aachen University (Germany); 06/2004 assistant professor in radiology; 01/2006 head of interventional therapy at the chair of applied medical engineering (Helmholtz Institute, RWTH Aachen, G); 07/2006 graduation in Health Care Management (MBA); 04/2008 associate professor in radiology; 06/2011 graduation in Medical Education (MME); 11/2012 Head of Diagnostic of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Marburg University Hospital and chair of Radiology, Philipps-University Marburg. I believe that pre-clinical and clinical research are the essential starting points for developing innovative interventional radiology techniques, therefore we must focus on research.
