T’FILOT
A MESSAGE FROM RABBI ROSENBAUM
Tom Cruise and the
Passover Seder
In one of the most memorable scenes
in movie history, Tom Cruise rallies a bar
room full of fighter pilots to get down on
one knee and sing “You’re my soul and
heart’s inspiration” to Kelley McGillis. As
anyone who has ever sent a loved one a
playlist on Valentine’s Day knows, we don’t need to use our own
words to express heartfelt emotions. We can find ourselves in the
words and music of great artists.
This is the theory behind the Passover Seder. We recite words
that we didn’t write and we tell a story that we didn’t experience
ourselves. Yet the Haggadah tells us: “In every generation each
of us should try to feel as if (in Hebrew k’ilu) we personally left
Egyptian slavery.” The ‘as if’ of Passover is a key to understand
everything we do Jewishly. All of Jewish practice is a game of
pretend. Here are just a few examples:
•
•
•
•
When we turn off all the lights at Havdalah, we are imagining the world before Creation, and then we are re-enacting God’s first creative act, the making of light.
When we stand up straight for the first time in the morning, we are acting out the experience of moving from feeling low to being uplifted, in the hope that we will lift someone’s spirits today.
When we sit in a sukkah, we are acting out the experience of being homeless in the hope that it will spur us to help people who live in a sukkah all year round.
On Shabbat, we pretend that we, our friends and family are perfect just as we are.
The goal of Jewish practice is to induce an emotion in a way
that will change us in some small way. The emotion could be
anger, fear, or joy. You might ask: but, how can we just produce
an emotion? The answer: actors do it all the time. And, so do
we when we watch them. We feel sadness and excitement for
people who are not real. And, we believe the experience makes
us better.
Why? Perhaps because empathy is at root a game of pretend.
The Torah says “You know the heart of the stranger, because
you were strangers in Egypt.” We’re more likely to be kind to
someone if we can imagine ourselves in their shoes.
So, this Passover, let’s work on perfecting our ‘as if’ skills. When it
comes to Jewish practice, all the world is a stage, and we are
the actors.

A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION, ED. D. CANDIDATE, ELIYAHU KRIGEL
JEA HOLDS 64th ANNUAL
CONFERENCE IN NEW JERSEY
When I first became a director of
education in 2000, I immediately joined
the Jewish Educators Assembly (JEA).
The JEA is the professional organization
that supports the educators of the
Conservative movement. I am so appreciative that the HNT
board and community encouraged my involvement and
participation in the JEA conference in January. The four-day
gathering brought together congregational school principals,
heads of Solomon Schechter Day Schools, early childhood
directors, bureau and agency personnel and family and
informal educators from all across North America and Israel.
I joined the JEA board of directors last year because the JEA
has its collective finger on the pulse of Jewish education.
Being on the board exposes me to all the religious schools
across the country in a very informative and positive way.
as a mark of honor and distinction. Earning the CJE is
based on educational experience, academic study, and a
demonstration of commitment to the goals of the JEA. The
conference provided a rich opportunity for professional
growth, exploration of new trends and ideas, and acquisition
of concrete programs and materials to bring home to each
school and synagogue. Additional information about the JEA
can be found at www.jewisheducators.org.
GARINIM - YOUNG FAMILIES
Garinim families had a blast at the "How I Became a Pirate"
play in Redmond in honor of Purim in March. We will be getting
together on April 3 for some Passover fun at a site TBD. For
info about the Garinim program, please contact our chair Karen
Langman at [email protected].
Tot Shabbat
Fridays April 1, 8, 15 & 22 • 9:45 AM – 10:30 AM • SJCC
Join Moreh Eliyahu and Morah Chava at the SJCC for an
opportunity to sing, dance, move our bodies, and participate
together in welcoming Shabbat with joy and happiness. Babies
and parents are welcome to participate.
Shabbat for Kids
Saturday, April 30, May 7, and May 21• 10:30 AM – 12:15 PM
Join us for this special time of putting the theory of Shabbat to
practice with a full heart! Open to 5th grade and below.
The theme of this year’s conference was “Back to the Future
– Integrating Basic Skills with the New Models of Jewish
Education.” Torah Lishma study sessions were led by Dr. Saul
Wachs. Dr. Wachs is also my professor in the Ed.D. program
at Gratz College. Among many other insights, Dr. Wachs
spoke about the contrast distinguishing the job of a barber
and the job of a teacher. A barber knows immediately if
they have done a great job. After the barber is finished
cutting the hair, the outcome is measurable and very visual.
Someone either likes their hair after a haircut or doesn’t
like it. Teachers who work in our Jewish schools however
don’t always see the difference they make in the lives of
their students. We give it our all and hope for the best but
the outcomes are often vague and illusive. As a school that
sets standards and sticks to goals, we monitor and assess
progress by looking at the student and family as a whole
unit. At FRS we work with parents as partners in raising selfreliant Jews who are critical thinkers because they ask good
questions.
During the conference, I was also honored to become a
Conservative Jewish Educator. The title of CJE is intended
to recognize attaining a standard of achievement in
the field of Conservative Jewish education and stands

ADULT EDUCATION
Jewish Spirituality guest speaker: Rabbi Rachel Nussbaum
Sunday, May 1, 10:00 AM - 11:15 AM
Join Rabbi Rachel Nussbaum for an exploration of the why,
what and how around Jewish blessings after meals. We'll do
a quick survey of the source-basis for birkat ha-mazon, its
structure, and some alternative options for shorter brachot
we can say after we eat. Then we'll do some singing together
(maybe you'll learn a new melody or two!), and conclude with
concrete ideas for how we can incorporate a higher level of
consciousness around food into our busy daily routines. 6
In our rich, diverse Jewish tradition, there are many things we
can’t yet “know.” We haven’t figured out if we believe there
truly will be an End of Days, and if so, what it could look like.
Some await a messianic figure who will arrive to usher it in, and
there is intense speculation as to who or what that messiah
is, and, even more importantly, whether the dead will be
resurrected. Come and explore some tasty ancient and modern
Jewish braaaaaaiiiiins on this matter…
We keep this event free and collaborative by contributing a
dessert, snack, or drink!

KASHERING FOR PASSOVER - RABBINICAL ASSEMBLY PESACH GUIDE

understanding of Jewish Law. With significant changes in the nature and manufacture of kitchen products and foodstuffs, new
policies are required to maintain a Kosher-for-Pesach kitchen. The full guide is available at rabbinicalassembly.org/pesah-guide

SPRING 2016 DAYTIMERS FILM SERIES
April 13 (NOTE THE UPDATED DATE):
Fill the Void - A 2012 Israeli film with English
subtitles
After a young Hasidic woman dies in childbirth,
her 18-year-old sister is asked to cancel her
upcoming marriage to a promising young
man and marry her widowed brother-in-law
instead. She must choose between her heart’s
wish and her family duty.
May 18: My Knees Were Jumping - A 1996
American documentary
In the nine months just prior to World War II
nearly 10,000 children were sent, without their
parents, to Great Britain from Nazi Germany,
Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland. These
children were rescued by the Kindertransport
movement. Most of the children never saw their
parents again. The story of the Kindertransports
is an extraordinary piece of history-- unknown
far too long.
June 15: The Nasty Girl - A 1990 German film
with English subtitles
Loosely based on a true story, this film follows
Sonja, a small-town teen, as she enters an
essay contest and ends up researching her
city's involvement with the Third Reich. While
the town has a reputation for resisting Nazi
influence, Sonja discovers that many locals
actually collaborated with the Gestapo and had deep roots
within the Third Reich. Eventually, Sonja's investigation leads
some citizens to try to block her efforts to uncover the truth.
