Wim Wenders’ mastery of the documentary form is again on display in this stunning
visual ode to the photographer Sebastiao Salgado, co-directed by the shutterbug’s son
Juliano Ribeiro Salgado. Long recognized as one of the camera’s great artists, Sebastiao’s
sculptural use of light and space is combined with a deep empathy for the human condition, resulting in images that capture the dignity within every subject. —Variety

MERCHANTS OF DOUBT
Director: Robert Kenner; USA, 2014, 94 min; PG
From the director of FOOD INC. and inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes
and Erik Conway, MERCHANTS OF DOUBT takes audiences on a satirically comedic, yet
illuminating ride into the heart of American spin. It lifts the curtain on a secretive group of
silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities – yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about public threats
ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change.—Mongrel Media
This doc is a quirky and uplifting character study of a cycling legend, 75-year old
Giuseppe Marinoni. —The New York Times
“AN IMPORTANT FILM. IT’S A RIVETING FILM, A NECESSARY FILM!” – Portland Oregonian “INCREDIBLY ENTERTAINING!” – Pedal
As the 19th-century British painter J.M.W.
Turner, Timothy Spall bellows and grunts
his way through a galvanic portrayal of
a genius at work. Director Mike Leigh
grounds Turner’s work in the material life
of his times. The cinematography uncannily captures the world as Turner saw and
painted it. —San Francisco Chronicle

june 3 & 4 (9:00) UVIC UNDERGRADS:
Director: John Madden; UK, 2015, 123 min; rated G
Cast: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Richard Gere
A sequel, also directed by John Madden. And if the harsh truth is that this follow-up is second best, it’s still not half bad. The original
cast has returned and now most of those residents have settled in to the wobbly-wonderful groove of life at the hotel, and life in India.
It doesn’t hurt that it looks as good as the first: a riot of reddish oranges, deep-sky blues, and pomegranate reds. I throw up my hands
I just had fun, mostly because watching these actors brings so much joy. —The Village Voice

“PACINO IS IRRESISTIBLE…..THIS HILARIOUS AND
HEARTFELT MOVIE IS AN EXUBERANT GIFT.”
– Rolling Stone
“Danny Collins,” about an old pop star discovering the true meaning of life, is an appealing comedy with an unabashed streak of melodrama, sharp dialogue, and a superb
ensemble cast, anchored by Al Pacino. Its excitement comes from watching its raspyvoiced star play a Neil Diamond-ish soft rock icon reconnecting with the family he’s
neglected for decades while wooing a Hilton manager (Annette Bening} and trying to
write something new and good. —RogerEbert.com
I don’t think I have ever had a nightmare quite as scary as
this film – a modern classic of fear. Jay (Maika Monroe)
finds out that she has been inducted into a supernatural
death cult and will be followed by a demon that only she
can see, and which will kill her... —The Guardian

PHOENIX
Director: Christian Petzold; Germany, 2014, 99 min; German with subtitles; rated G
–Toronto Film Scene
Both a powerful allegory for post-war regeneration and a rich Hitchcockian tale of mistaken identity, PHOENIX’s setting is WWII and
the heroine is a concentration camp survivor returning to Berlin in search of her lost husband. Disfigured by a gunshot wound as she
made her way out of Auschwitz, former nightclub singer, Nelly (Nina Hoss), has inherited enough money to pay for an expensive plastic
surgery operation. Nelly finds her husband, the pianist Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld); that he doesn’t recognize her, is one of several twists
that subtly moves the story into thriller territory. —The Hollywood Reporter

With Lily James of ‘Downton Abbey’ as our heroine and Cate Blanchett as the stepmother, this

MATT SHEPARD IS A FRIEND OF MINE
WOMAN IN GOLD
An intimate perspective on a public atrocity, this is director Michele Josue’s account of
her youthful friendship with Matthew Shepard, the 21-year-old gay university student
whose brutal 1998 torture and murder in Wyoming became a turning point in raising
awareness of hate crimes against the LGBT community. Through her voice-over and
intimate interviews with Shepard’s parents, a teacher and friends, we see Shepard as a
gregarious, politically minded but vulnerable young man. —The Globe and Mail
The film recalls the legal battle, in the late 1990s, between a Los Angeles dress-shop
owner named Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) and the Austrian government for custody of
a Gustav Klimt painting the Nazis stole from her family while excising the Jews of Vienna.
This is a good, juicy, infuriating story withT a well-documented but extremely satisfying
moral outcome. —Grantland
Director: Michele Josue; USA, 2014, 89 minutes
IRIS pairs the late, legendary documentarian Albert Maysles (‘Grey Gardens’) with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed
93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film,
the documentary is a story about creativity and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose
enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life’s sustenance and reminds us that life is nothing but an experiment. —Magnolia Pictures

DOUBLE INDEMNITY SOME KIND OF LOVE
WHILE WE’RE YOUNG
This shrewd, tawdry thriller is one of
the high points of 40s films. Barbara
Stanwyck’s platinum blonde is perhaps the
best acted of all the slutty, cold-blooded
femme fatales of the film noir genre. Fred
MacMurray is the patsy she ensnares in a
plot to kill her husband. —Pauline Kael
Two New York couples, one middle-aged and the other millennial and carefree, are in for
a satirical skewering, but also something close to a hug. Josh and Cornelia (Ben Stiller
and Naomi Watts) are in their 40s but not yet comfortable with adulthood. They’re
befriended by twenty-something hipsters (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried), who
seem to be completely fulfilled. —Toronto Star

SUNSHINE ON LEITH
This compelling investigative doc exposes the US sugar industry’s systematic hijacking
of scientific study to bury evidence that sugar is, in fact, toxic. For 40 years, Big Sugar
deflected threats to its multibillion-dollar empire through creative PR and tactics
strikingly similar to the tobacco industry. As obesity rates skyrocket, the sugar industry
has come under increasing scrutiny from emerging scientific and medical studies. Sugar
Coated warns that we are sitting on a dietary time bomb. —Hot Docs 2015
Billy Wilder’s noir-comic classic. William
Holden is the screenwriter who pulls into
the driveway of a seedy mansion belonging
to Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), a
forgotten silent movie star. One of the
great movies--but it’s no relic. Wow, does
it ever hold up. —Amazon
In this playful and charming ode to Canadiana, Calgarian-turned-Hollywood comedy
writing guru Robert Cohen (‘The Big Bang Theory’) comes home on an epic quest to
rediscover Canada’s national identity. Shocked by how little his American friends know,
Cohen’s mission is to dispel the stereotypes, misconceptions and absurd inaccuracies.
Cohen crosses paths with Canadian comics Mike Myers, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Rick
Mercer and Martin Short, musicians Rush and the Barenaked Ladies. A hilarious journey
full of true patriot love. —Hot Docs 2015
A sprightly and unabashed adaptation of the much-loved stage show, spinning a
MAMMA MIA!-style narrative around the songs of the Proclaimers. We open in an
armoured vehicle travelling through Afghanistan in which the assembled sing Sky Takes
the Soul. From here we move to Edinburgh where our battle-worn heroes (George
MacKay and Kevin Guthrie) attempt to rebuild their lives and loves…. I shed a tear within
the first 10 minutes, and spent the rest of the movie beaming like a gibbering, love-struck
fool. —The Guardian

Marilyn Monroe moves in upstairs! That’s
the sweaty premise of this droll sex farce.
Italian director Alice Rohrwacher’s gripping coming-of-age drama set amidst the bees and beauty of the Tuscan countryside one
hot summer. In an old ramshackle house, Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu) lives with her three sisters, her father Wolfgang (Sam

whilst also being a working farm and a magical kingdom for the children. The family keeps bees and makes delicious honey. Gelsomina

There have been many film versions of Gustave Flaubert’s 1856 novel, but this is the first
one directed by a woman, Sophie Barthes. Mia Wasikowska (“Tracks”) plays the tragic
heroine, the listless wife of country doctor in provincial France. She amuses herself with
fashion, and eventually with extramarital affairs with a dandy law clerk (Ezra Miller) and
a dashing marquis (Logan Marshall-Green). It’s a handsome production. —Vanity Fair
