WITH RECESSION COMES CHANGE
Regular readers to the Scrumpy will have
seen since January’s issue a shrinkage of
size in the printed magazine. This is down
to costs, and this is paid for by our advertisers who many have stopped advertising
completely or cut back. Back in April 2008
we set up our web site www.mag4livemusic.co.uk
The Scrumpy is downloadable as a PDF
and now over the months the readership
on-line has been growing, and the size has
remained at 28 - 30 pages. Why? it’s
cheaper plus we have no one out selling
advertising, so this has also caused a set
back, but we are on the case!! As one of
our past advertisers said ‘So the
Scrumpy’s finally been hit by the
recession!’ So for the time being we are at
20 pages printed and 30 pages on-line,
which is easy to access and download, if
you have a problem I am sure you have a
friend or a relation who will show you how.
So, the Scrumpy took to the Internet at the
right
JULY ‘09
3
time and doing it this way we can display
more photo’s and the Scrumpy is in colour
on-line as well. Sadly over the past year we
have seen more pubs that have been staging live music events close down. When I
recently distributed the Scrumpy into
Reading town centre The Rising Sun, great
old rock venue was completely boarded
up, and two other pubs closed completely!!
Then there is the local councils over sound
levels and noise of people leaving venues
late at night. ‘Mama Stones’ in Wellington
closed in March and The Rock Gardens,
Weston-Super-Mare early June for that
very reason. Sad but real!
In this month’s Scrumpy on-line is Rock ‘n’
Roll with Boppin Darrin, Part 2 of Did You
Know About Stings , A Pop Quiz, and more
news about what we are all about ‘LIVE
MUSIC’. So it’s not all doom and gloom,
the owners of both Mama Stones and The
Rock Gardens are looking for new premises, and there are still some great venues
still open putting on some really good music, go and enjoy some, have a good month.

AND THE WINNERS ARE Of the Battle of the Bands Final Heat on
the 28th May at The Pier Tavern, Burnham
on Sea ‘Panic Office’ .
An early form of ‘Panic Office’ began jamming and performing a very few shows in
mid 2005 with Samuel Jones on guitar and
vocals, Jack Cantwell on guitar, Pete
Jenkins on synth/bass and Ben Redmond
on drums. However the band did not begin
seriously in any way until Jack left to be
replaced by Phil Shelly on guitar also bring
a new voice to the band, George Banwell
replaced Ben on drums and Sam Large
took over bass duties leaving Pete to work
on synthesis. Though out 2007 the band
wrote and recorded the debut self-released
album “Ghost Music” which received positive review and went on to receive 3rd
place in the BCFM Rock Show’s album of
the year. The band gigged through out
2007, at the end of ‘07 however the band
almost split up which eventually led to the
departure of Sam Large with Pete returning
to bass duties. During the first half of 2008
the band played no gigs in the view to write
new songs and return to live performance
once the new material was ready. After this
lull ‘Panic Office’ returned to playing live
through out the second half of 2008 experimenting with new material and continuing
to write new songs. Currently the band
have just completed recording the first half
of their second release which has been
named as “Blue Hour”. The current line-up
is Samuel Jones - guitar / vocals; Phil
Shelly - guitar / vocals; George Banwell drums / vocals; Peter Jewkes - synthesisers / bass. We have always strived to write
music that is interesting and different with
experimental twists without alienating the
listener. We’re extremely happy about
winning the Burnham BOTB, for us it’s an
excellent achievement as we often loose
out to the popular bands we play against in
competitions. We are looking forward to
recording at Horizontal Studios and the
opportunities that this may well provide.

new fans and friends wherever they play.
They have for a number of years made
frequent visits to Somerset, Devon and
down to Cornwall to play gigs to their ever
increasing fan base in the West Country.
They have recently returned from a very
busy and successful tour of Europe, comprising shows in Italy, Austria, Belgium and
Holland where their debut mini album has
been well received. Recently voted ‘Best

Back in August ‘08 The Scrumpy did a
review of an E P sent in by ‘The Creek’ ,
and suitably impressed by the complete
style and sound of this band, excellent.
They recently sent in their new album recorded at ‘Audio Shelter’, Kingswood, Bristol, produced by Nick ‘Shaggy’ Atkins
between October 2007 and October 2008,
mixed by Dave Colebrook, which proves
you cannot rush good music!
The album starts off with the title track ‘It
Doesn’t Matter’ followed by ‘Flaming Fire’
the concept is based on the American Indian and the album has managed to create a
spiritual feel, very relaxing, but this is more
than a relaxing album, really well written
songs, just that, close your eyes, it take’s
you off, to far far distance, a way from the
hustle and bustle of our modern noise and
pushy lives. The four tracks from the E P
are on the album ‘Yosemite Jim’, ‘Chief’,

feel, nice harmony’s, good all round. The

acoustic guitars; Geronimo Peru - vocals,
acoustic guitar; Juliella Fitzcollins - vocals;

ROCK ‘n’ ROLL with
Boppin Darrin
Hi all and welcome to July on the 1st 1930
its Bobby Days birthday, with classic hits,
‘Over and Over’, ‘Rockin Robin’. On the 6th
1925 its Bill Haley with that great hit ‘Rock
Around The Clock’, ‘Shake Rattle and Roll’.
The 18th its Dion Dimucci with ‘Ruby’,
‘Wanderer’ and then on the 30th 1941 is
Paul Anka who sang ‘Donna’ and ‘Puppy
Love’. William John Clifton Haley known to
everyone as Bill Haley, Born in Michigan,
USA. He spent his time playing a guitar
from the age of 7, when he hit his teenage
years he was playing country with his
friends and cousin at local parks and functions. By 1947 he became a DJ at his local
radio station in Chester, where he married
his childhood sweet heart Dorothy Crowe.
Bill now itching to play live music, worked
on getting a band together, a new sound
was being formed and the local kids loved
it, so much was the attention a talent scout
got him to record a few tracks as demo’s,
so good that the record company released
them straight away, the tracks ‘Rock This
Joint’, ‘Crazy Man Crazy’ went straight to
the top ten US charts and gained him national success, his next release ‘Rock
Around The Clock’ made him known world
wide, selling over 100 million copies!!
Wow. This track was also used in the film
‘Black Board Jungle’ and was also used in
the film ‘American Graffiti’, ‘Lemon Popsicle’ and the TV series ‘Happy Days’, they
even made a film ‘Rock Around The Clock’
with Bill Hayley and The Comets, the track
was also re-released 8 times in Britain,
entering the charts each time. Even today
at R ‘n’ R clubs when played it still fills the
dance floor, it’s become the R ‘n’ R anthem
and enjoyed by all. Other hits for Bill Hayley followed of course, ‘Shake, Rattle and
Roll’, ‘See You Later Alligator’ the list is
endless. He toured the USA, Britain, Europe and was a huge success everywhere.
When asked in his seventies if he would
ever change his style he answered “I like
what I play and people are always wanting
JULY ‘09

me to play”. Even though Bill wasn’t hitting
the charts, he toured regular across the
USA, UK and Europe until he past away, at
his home in Texas....
On the 3rd @The Jive Inn, Bridgwater Bill
has got ‘Memphis 56’, then on the 31st

“SO MUCH FOR SUPERMAN”
www.barbarajhunt.com
Is the title of the album from Bristol based
singer/songwriter ‘Mireille Mathlener’ who
originally come’s from the Netherlands,
Mireille moved to the UK in the mid 1990’s.
The 10 tracks on the album are all written
by Mireille starting with ‘Never Meant to be
Friends’, with some good titles like ‘Big
Fish, Small Town’, ‘Man Who Looks Like
Lennon’, ‘Robin Hood (a second look),
‘Stealing Horses’, yes some good ideas,
not too quirky (as implied by one reviewer!)
over all a good album, well recorded and
presented, I enjoyed the lyric’s, I should
think that this young lady could well hold
her own playing live. Look out for her at
The Burnham Folk Festival, Somerset on
the 5th September. The album has been
recorded with some of Bristol’s top
musician’s in attendance, is available
through her Myspace and on download
through e-music, iTunes and Napster.

Reissued “PLAY MY HEART”
Singer/songwriter ‘Barbara J Hunt from
Bristol has “King Of My Heart” and the
album title “Play My Heart” featured in the
hit comedy movie “Confetti”, which has
prompted the reissue of her excellent album. I have seen Barbara live and she is
very busy in and around Bristol, plus further afield. The album was originally released to critical acclaim back in 2006, is a
deft expression of the complexities of the
human heart, with the arrangements
across this album anchored by Barbara’s
idiosyncratic guitar style, making this a well
produced and crafted album, 14 tracks.
Well worth checking out, nice work from a
very talented lady, nice the way the art
works done on the sleeve insert.

YOU NOISY LOT!
Sad but The Rock Gardens in Orchard
Street, Weston-Super-Mare has been
forced to close by the council due to un
resolvable issues regarding the noise (
sound levels of the bands playing in the
venue) The Rock Gardens is ‘A victim of
it’s own success’, doubly in that its
reputation has spread, with national
touring rock bands who have been including it in their tours, making it one of
the busiest music venues in the South
West and having recently confirmed
bands such as ‘Bring Me To The Horizon’, ‘Enter Shikari’, and ‘Attack! Attack!’ Bands that would travel from far
and wide to see. The management are
currently seeking an alternative venue
with a capacity of between 1000 - 2000
people. The last night for the venue
after 18 months in Orchard Street was
Sunday 7th June, it was a nice size for
modern music and will be missed by
many.

SINGER / SONGWRITER
MIDNIGHT MANGO
‘Rob Phillips’ is a well-respected
PRODUCTIONS
singer/songwriter based in Bristol, who is
about to release his first studio album
“Searching for Trolls” this month. Rob was
classically trained and wrote his first symphony at 17. He has toured in America,
playing Saxophone in a band, at the likes
of Disney World Epcot Centre, Atlanta and
Tennessee. But then realised it’s hard to
sing and play saxophone at the same time,
so started learning the acoustic guitar. Now
you will find him usually playing solo
acoustic sets, his previous gig experience
includes Carling Academy, Aston Court
Festival, The Harbour Festival, The Fleece
and Firkin, Bunch of Grapes, The Piano
Bar, The Bedford, London Halo Bar, Mr
Wolfs and The Cavern Club. The majority
of songs are original with the occasional
covers such as Nirvana, Johnny Cash and
Damien Rice. Like many dedicated musicians Rob has funded the album himself
with the aim now of creating further opportunities to progress his music career, in the
hope of becoming a full time professional
musician. All tracks on the new album are
writen by Rob and co produced with Chris
Ryan @ Ascape Studios, Jeramy Alom
mixed the tracks @ Sonique Studios
(Jeremy used to work at Air Studios and
has helped the likes of Massive Attack,
Pual McCartney, Elton John, and Incognito). Essentially, “Searching For Trolls” is an
acoustic-based album, but it is enhanced
with a good selection of capable musicians, strong female backing vocals and
strings by Geoff Gascogne (previously in
Jamie Cullum’s Band). All of which provide
the album with fluidity and strength. There
are 10 tracks on the album with a bonus
track, essentially covering relationships
from first date, to love, heartache, to marriage and children (Life) With the album
available from iTunes, Amazon, Napster,
eMusic and Robs web site.

every players reaction is probably “This
STRINGS - DO YOU KNOW?
can’t possibly be string enough”, it’s
Part 2 worked fine for several centuries.
Some players reckon that the best way to
get some life back into strings is to boil
them. The technique works on wound
strings to an extent, because it removes
some of the grunge put there by the players fingers. What it won’t do ,of course, is
reverse the mechanical wear and tear
where the strings touch the frets, bridge
and nut. A better way is to reduce the build
up of corrosion after playing by wiping
down the strings between the strings and
fingerboard, as well as on top.
One way to ‘lock’ your strings if you find
them going out of tune is to feed them
through the hole in the string-post twice
before you bring them to tension. This is
most effective with unwound strings and
many wound strings are too thick to go
through twice anyway.
We reckon the Piano has more strings than
any other instrument. Not only does it have
88 notes, perhaps more, but the higher
notes have two or three strings each to
increase the volume. That’s typically more
than 150 strings in total. Fortunately, Piano
strings last a very long time as they are
only struck by felt-lined wooden hammers
activated by the keys. The combined pull of
all the strings on a Grand Piano is about 30
tons, which is why they’re held in an iron
frame. Speaking of which, the total tension
exerted by the strings of an electric guitar
is around 47kg, depending on the string
gauges selected and the scale length. On
an acoustic guitar, this is likely to increase
to more like 80 - 90kg, mainly due to the
heavier strings used.
The lower on a piano are similar to the
round wound strings used on bass guitars.
When the young Paul McCartney found
himself broke and with The Beatles in
Hamburg, he would sometimes steal
strings from Pianos, using a set of wire
cutters and guessing the correct gauge for
his bass by eye.
Classical strings have bare ends and have
to be anchored by tying them. Although
JULY ‘09
Electric and bass strings are normally held
in place by a small metal ball or bobbin,
which is tied to the string during the manufacturing process by looping it around the
bobbin and then winding the string tightly
around itself several times. Most players
find this to be fine, but some strings are
offered with a ‘wielded’ ball end, designed
to withstand heavy whammy action without
breaking.
Blues legend BB King still winds most of
the length of a new string around the tuning
post, rather than cut it off. The reason is
that when a string breaks, it normally
breaks where it sits on the bridge saddle.
As a poor young man, BB would simply
unwind the string until there was enough to
go past the tail piece, put a knot in the end,
and re tune it.
The greater the mass of a string the lower
the pitch at which it will reach a given
tension. This why the strings for musical
instruments are gauged, with the thickness
of the strings increasing progressively as
the notes they are designed to be tuned to
gets lower. In other words, the strings get
thicker from the treble side to the bass side
of the neck. Most players feel comfortable
with a similar tension string on each string,
although many guitarists find the higher
strings to bend if they are lighter than the
rest of the set. Of course, if you are using
a tuning that is very different from standard, the assumptions string makers use
when they put together gauged sets go
right out of the window. Creating your own
string sets can be hit and miss unless you
calculate the string tensions based on the
pitches you intend. The maths involved can
be a bit scary but there are special calculations on-line.
If you listen to guitar breaks on homegrown
records from the 1950’s and early 60’s, you
can hear that finger bends were difficult.
This was because most British guitarists
were using heavy strings Continued on page 28

STRINGS continued from page 26
Often with a wound third. There were no
‘ultra light’ string sets at the time, but some
British guitarists learned a trick from players in America and bought a high string for
a Banjo as well as a set of guitar strings.
The Banjo string was the thinnest, so that
became the first string. The guitar string
marked 1st on the pack became the second string and so on. By the time of the
British ‘Blues Boom’ in the mid 1960’s,
string bends had become much more important, and string manufactures offered
sets in a variety of gauges.
Gut strings are still alive and well in the
Violin world, although there are other
choices. A lot of players still prefer gut
strings and consider the synthetic alternatives to be getting better, but not quite there
yet.
Steel core strings, are particularly popular
with non classical players. They have a
direct, clear sound, very good tuning stability and last a long time. These steel also
come in wound and unwound varieties.
There is a similar range of choice for Cello
players, who will mix and match strings to
an incredible degree to get exactly the
sound and response they are looking for on
a particular instrument. So you can find top
players with two, or even three brands of
strings on one Cello. We hope this article
has been helpful on your learning curve.
