Where’s the support
for small businesses?
Yet another budget has come
and gone - hours of analysis by
the pundits (all biased by their
own political preferences);
opportunistic back-biting by
opposition parties; and more
half-truths from the Government.
Plus a forecast by the Chancellor
for economic growth in 2011 that
even the most optimistic of
salesmen would be embarrassed
to table!
But letʼs be honest – has any
budget in the last 20 years really
made that much difference to the
majority of us in our daily lives?
A penny up here, a penny down there, and a little additional tax relief
on a savings plan that few of us ever take advantage of anyway?
If you are particularly rich and own a vast portfolio of investments
perhaps it will make a difference but even the new high threshold tax
band was only a political move to try and secure the working class
vote on the misguided basis of being seen to be ʻbashing the toffs.ʼ
The actual additional revenue that it will put into the Treasury coffers
will be relatively miniscule and will fall a long way short of easing the
burden of £175bn borrowing during 2009 and another £173bn in 2010!
No doubt those affected have already found smart ways of avoiding
the increased tax through fiscal creativity!
The truth is, it is the bigger picture and the greater political
philosophy that impacts on our lives, not the minor tweaks we see in
the budget each year.
Governments are driven by votes and tax revenue. The only
difference between the left and the right in this respect is where they
choose to place that burden – on the few or the many. What both
parties seem to miss is the fact that the tinkering rarely does anything
to help the backbone of the British economy –small- to medium-sized
enterprises which deliver the lions share of UK GDP and by default
tax revenue.
Machinery Update looks at what the 2009 Budget has to offer small
businesses on page 8, but in truth it is just lots of little tweaks and no
real action!
The real significance will be the negative impact on SMEʼs of yet
another 2p of duty on fuel costs, no reversal of the recent increase in
Corporation tax, the increase in the cost of statutory redundancy pay
and the continued lack of significant investment in education and
training for the engineering, science and technical disciplines. These
are things that really do make a difference to UK businesses!
When will the Government realise that it is industry and the SMEʼs
that are the engine room of the British economy – not legions of penpushing bureaucrats, trying to protect their own tails while thinking up
ever more devious ways of duping the voter.

Show reputation
attracts first-timers
More than 80 per cent of the
floor space has been booked at
this yearʼs PPMA Show with
some 23 new names lining up at
the event, which takes place at
the NEC Birmingham from
September 29 to October 1.
The dedicated machinery and
equipment focus of the
exhibition, the diversity of
markets served and the calibre
of visitors it attracts are key
reasons cited for exhibiting.
The strength of the PPMA
remains a major selling point for
new exhibitors. VC999,
manufacturers of vacuum
packaging machinery for
industries such as food and
medical, has recently joined the
association and sees exhibiting
at the PPMA Show as a natural
extension of membership.

Subject to regulatory approvals,
Domino Printing Sciences is
to acquire Labeljet S.A and its
subsidiary Marque TDI, a full
sales and service operation
selling a wide range of coding
and marking products in
Portugal.
Marque TDI, which is based
in Porto, has been Dominoʼs
distributor in the Portuguese
market since 2002.
Initial consideration is a fixed
sum of €4m plus an amount to
be agreed for net tangible
assets.
The total initial sum including
net tangible assets is expected
to be approximately €7m.
ROVEMA Global Packaging
Group has acquired HassiaRedatron and the packaging unit
of Piltz Verpackungstechnik. The
company names will be
amalgamated to form HassiaPiltz, and be based in Butzbach,
Hessen, Germany. Hassia-Piltz
Group produces single- and
multi-lane form/fill/seal machines
for 3- and 4-side sealed bags.

Growth in the Indian subcontinent has led PIAB, a global
vacuum technology specialist,
to open a subsidiary in Chennai,
India. The Chennai subsidiary
will service pharmaceutical,
chemical, food and automotive
companies, providing vacuum
conveying solutions.
PIAB will support existing
distribution networks and
provide training and technical
support for distributors and
customers.
UPM Conveyors has created a
specialist division for product
handling incorporating box
fillers; product counting by
weight; product conveying
controlled through bar code
reading; and complete systems
to transfer products through all
stages of manufacture.

Fishy projects
from Campden
A range of projects including
different aspects of fish
processing, preservation and
packing will be examined by
Campden BRIʼs new fish and
seafood research group.
A recently undertaken
project looks at High Pressure
Processing (HPP) for shelf-life
extension and meat
extraction. Fish specialist
Craig Leadley said: "Over half
a million tonnes of HPP
treated seafood are being
processed each year in North
America and New Zealand,
where the technology is a
commercial reality. But
European seafood processors
have yet to fully exploit the
technology.
“The research will help
provide independent guidance
for industry on the potential
applications, benefits and
economics of the technology.”
In a separate project
Campden BRI has explored
the use of a new approach to
modified atmosphere
packaging (MAP) of fish with
soluble gas stabilisation
(SGS).
The process is similar to
MAP except that carbon
dioxide is dissolved into the
product.

Some glad tidings
amid the gloom
This yearʼs Budget was greeted
with gloom and derision by most
commentators. However for both
large and small businesses the
Chancellor Alistair Darling did
offer some relief in three areas of
business which could help to
stimulate capital investment.
For multi-nationals, the news
that companies headquartered in
the UK will not pay tax on profits
generated by overseas
subsidiaries will be welcomed.
However, the jury is still out on
the overall impact of the measure
as it comes with penalties and a
tightening of the net in other
areas by HMRC to compensate
for loss of revenues.
For smaller companies the
extension, until November 2010,
of the scheme allowing them to
claim back tax on the previous
three yearsʼ profits by ʻcarrying
backʼ losses up to £50,000 is
likely to boost liquidity. It will
help to improve cashflow for up
to 140,000 small businesses at
a time when the squeeze on
credit and payment terms is
hitting hard.
But the British Chambers of
Commerce said the £50,000
carry back limit should have
been increased to make a real
impact. Late payments and
cashflow issues account for one
quarter of all business failures.
Of particular significance for
the engineering sector was the
doubling of capital allowances,
the tax relief for investment in
machinery and plants, to 40 per
cent. Taken in conjunction with
the VAT rate cut, a company
can save as much as £75,000

companies will see this as an
opportunity to invest in better
equipment to improve their
productivity and margins.
Some areas of processing and
packaging technology could also
benefit from the £750m the
Government is making available
via the new Strategic Investment
Fund, of which £10m is
earmarked for UK Trade and
Investment.
Overall representatives of
small business felt much more
could have been done to boost
manufacturing. Chris Buxton,
CEO, PPMA, said: “Small
businesses are essential to the
UK economy - increased fuel
duty and increased redundancy
payments are no help at all.”

The doors to the National
Centre for Food Manufacturing
at the University of Lincolnʼs
Holbeach campus have been
opened officially by Sir Stuart
Rose, executive chairman,
Marks & Spencer.
Located at the heart of the
UKʼs food manufacturing
industry in southern Lincolnshire,
the £3.5m centre is a state-ofthe-art food packaging and
processing training factory for
food sector employees .
The Centre will also support
the Universityʼs developing
agenda for research and
innovation in food packaging and
automation (MU Sept/Oct 2008).
It offers a range of training
opportunities, from bespoke
short courses to degree
programmes for food sector
employees.
Sir Stuart said: “Holbeach will
ensure a steady flow of trained
professionals into the food

Springvale Equipment has
become the UK agent for the
German made PACK-SAVER
range of Product Recovery
Machines from LEU-TRONIC.
The PACK-SAVER is designed
to allow clean separation of
product from its packaging
material. It operates without
knives using adjustable tear-off
rails to open the packages. An
air-stream blows the empty
wrapping material out of the
machine. The product is then
transported to a vibration
sieving device, where an
exhausting device separates
small wrapper particles from
the product, which can then be
re-processed.
Depending on product, a
capacity of up to 400kg/hour
can be achieved. Typical
products which are being
recovered are: coffee, tea,
sugar, confectionery, chewing
gum, chocolate bars, biscuits,
crisps, and detergent tablets.

X-ray entry
The new Ishida IX-EA-2161,
an entry-level version of its
X-ray inspection system, has
been designed to inspect
products such as wrapped
confectionery and small trays
and bags. The powerful X-ray,
is said to offer higher detection
levels than a standard metal
detector and for a much wider
range of foreign bodies.
Operating at belt speeds of
up to 60 metres/minute, the
IX-EA 2161 is able to detect a
0.7mm diameter metal piece,
plus other contaminants such
as glass, stone, rubber and
plastic.
The IX-EA is also claimed to
be able to concentrate
detection on the most relevant
or critical parts of a product, so
that peripheral areas of a
carton or the seal area of a
bag can be ʻmaskedʼ during
inspection.

Xact weigher
Xact Prepack has introduced a
range of weighers and vertical
ffs machines from China.
The weighers are made to
ISO 9001:2000 standards, are
CE certified and particularly

The HD10 10-bucket model

speeds bar wraps
Sigpack Systems, part of Bosch
Packaging Technology,
introduced the HSM pillow-pack
machine with integrated Pull
Pack module and its latest
feeding technology during the
IPACK-IMA exhibition in Milan
recently. This machine is
particularly suited to high-speed
handling of confectionery bars.
The new feeding wheel
technology allows feeding at up
to 800 bars/minute. Gentle
product handling is achieved by
simultaneous speeds of the
vacuum gripper and product
when picking up and depositing.
Quick-release couplings
facilitate gripper head
replacement so the grippers can
be adjusted to suit a variety of
products. The infeed technology
is suitable for handling primary
as well as secondary packaging
Feeding wheel from Sigpack Systems, for chocolate industry

operations. The HSM pillowpack machine is capable of
packaging up to 1,200 bars/
minute and produces hermetic,
loose or tight-fitting pillow packs.
The integrated Pull Pack

Carry bag for stands up trays
The Tray & Bag concept from
Sabalpack, represented in the
UK by Ilpra Systems, was
launched at IPACK-IMA.
Tray & Bag uses a vertical bag
former to make a Stabiloʼ style
stand-up bag around a tray or
punnet to present a convenient
and attractive pack style for the
display and carrying home of
fruit, vegetables, bakery or meat
products, says the company.
The machine uses a tube of film,
but seals around the bag on all
four edges to create the stand
up design.
After filling a special feeding
system allows trays to be
introduced to the forming tube,
prior to sealing.
A carry handle can be
incorporated into each bag.
According to Alessandro
Ferraresi, international sales
director of Sabalpack a major
advantage of using a vertical
machine, rather than the
conventional horizontal format,
is the number of bag variants
which can be accommodated.
The machine will make bags
of between 80mm x 50mm and
180mm x 120mm, and can
operated at speeds of up to 4050 packs/minute, depending on
bag size and product. All
machines can be fitted with
MAP facility.

All round versatility
VersaWrap™, a new continuous
wrap-around case and tray
packer for high-speed lines, has
been launched by Cermex.
This brings a faster machine
(65 cycles/minute) to its range of
case and tray packers. It can
handle a range of plastic and
glass bottles, beverage cans,
and jars.
It has been designed to meet
the companyʼs key criteria of
modularity, ergonomics and
competitive pricing.
To create a complete wrapping
line Cermex is also launching the
VersaCombi™ which includes
the VersaWrap integrated with
shrink wrapping and shrink
tunnel modules.
VersaWrapʼs case automation
system means it can handle
wrap-around blanks with either
joining or short flaps, while size
changeovers without change
parts can be completed in 15
minutes, claims the company. An
extended case magazine is fed
with stacks of cardboard blanks
while denesting and extraction is
done in two stages to ensure
safety of operation and to prevent
two blanks being extracted at the
same time, says Cermex.

additional sensors to determine

cooking product continuously
between two cooking belts,
whereby the direct contact
provides the most effective
method of transferring heat. It is
designed for boneless products

The belts run between
heating plates, transferring the
heat directly to the bacon – a
cooking method which allows it
to be cooked to specific

plastic film and packing

trays.
The TLM-T800 can process
all types of thermoformable
polymers and has a maximum
output of 20 cycles/minute at a
drawing depth of up to 80mm.
A unit has been installed at
GlaxoSmithKline in Ireland, for
ultrasonically-sealed
cardboard blisters for a
nicotine replacement product.
The machine has two
separate thermoforming areas,
automatic roll change facility
for the two 400mm film webs,
a quality mark imprinting
system and an ultrasound
sealing and punching device.
It is designed to be
integrated with a series of
Schubertʼs TLM-F44 robotic
packing stations and each unit
capable of packing up to 220
items/minute.
Schubert says the T800 has
a maximum filling output of
around 3,300 products/minute
with the highest upgrade

SAFEMAG and PROTECTOR
contamination detection and
removal systems to provide
maximum protection and
minimum material loss of
plastics feedstock, where
contamination is a constant risk

The SAFEMAG first stage
uses high force neodymium
permanent magnets to remove
ferrous and slightly magnetic
stainless steel from the
feedstock. The PROTECTOR
then removes non-magnetic
contamination to ensure that the
material fed into the production

weigher to Swedish food
manufacturer Dafgård which
needed to achieve gentle and
accurate weighing of meatballs
into bags at high speeds.
The integrity of the fragile
meatballs was vital at a target
speed of 100 bags/minute, said
Dafgård.
The Ishida CCW-M-214 can
achieve speeds of 120 bags/
minute and has been specifically
designed to handle food products
that require gentle and controlled
handling, says the company.
A low angle, reinforced
dispersion table with concealed
fixings; semi-flat radial feeder
troughs with waterfall end and
safe edges; and double opening
hoppers with cushioned, easy
down inserts; are said to ensure
that the product moves quickly
through the weigher without the
risk of damage.
In addition, the gentle slope
configuration of the discharge
chutes, with a set of metal
guides, reduces the fall speed
and prevents the meatballs from
colliding, allowing a quick
product transfer into the bag
maker. Target weights range
from 350g - 5kg for a variety of
retail packs.

McCain Foods has expanded
one of its key plants in South
Africa with the addition of three
new packing lines, each based
around an Ishida R-Series
multihead weigher.
The lines are designed to
work together to ensure
maximum productivity and to
meet varying levels of demand.
The weighers are integrated
into an infeed system that can
make use of just one line when
demand is low, or all three when
demand is high.
Currently, each machine is
operating well within its potential
speed, says Ishida, limited by
the downstream system
(bagmaker, hand packing into
cartons, checkweighing and
metal detection), delivering
500g plastic bags of fries at
90 bags/minute (bpm), 750g at
85bpm, 1kg at 70bpm, 1.75kg at
55bpm and 2.5kg at 50bpm.
Products produced include
french fries (ranging in length
from 6 to 12cm), potato wedges
(with or without skin) and batter
fries (breaded and spiced fries),
supplied to local customers
such as McDonalds, Mug ʻnʼ
Bean, Ocean Basket and the

Pumps to relish for Hawkshead
Hawkshead Relish, creators of
a range of traditional handmade
relishes, pickles and preserves,
has installed a Model 1000
depositor, transfer pump and
semi automatic capping device

Capable of pumping viscous
products as well as thinner
sauces, the pumps have
excellent suction capability. This
was vital for the product feed
required by Hawkshead which
needed to increase productivity,
speed and accuracy while
maintaining high standards of
production.
Transfer pumps, which are
not aggressive, draw the
product directly from a euro or
tote bin. The pumps are easy to
dismantle for cleaning.
Hawkshead is using the
equipment to deposit a range of
handmade jam, chutney, sauce
and mustard into varying sized
jars from 30g to 2.5kg at speeds
up to 60 pots/minute.

Better bagging
for bread seeds
A new BTH bread seed bag filling
process line has been installed at
the Berwick-on-Tweed mill of
Silvery Tweed Cereals as part of
a £5.5m investment.
The automated line includes
electronic nett weigher, automatic
bag placer, bag closing line,
metal detector, palletiser and
stretch wrapper.
The bag closure uses a special
double fold-over and gluing
system to seal the paper bags,
eliminating the need for stitching.
Other benefits include improved
hygiene, virtual elimination of
manual handling, better product
integrity, improved palletisation
and Atex zone 22 protection in
proximity to the bag filling spout,
says the company. Alongside
these improvements has come a
substantial increase in production
as well as energy savings.
“Traditionally, we have always
dealt with mini bulks - bags of 1
tonne and 500kg capacity - and
then much smaller bags of from
25kg down to 10kg,” comments
Bob Gladstone of Silvery Tweed.
“The bags were pre-stitched
which is not ideal for food
hygiene. Also the filling process
was labour-intensive and limited
throughput to 1,500 kg/hour. Now
we have potential to run at 3
tonnes/hour on one line and up to
9 tonnes/hour on the other,” says
Gladstone.
Incoming seeds, such as
poppy and sunflowers, are
screened, cleaned and blended
before pneumatic transfer to a
silo above the BTH packing line.
All material-contact components
are of stainless steel
construction. The blend enters a
gravity-dosing valve, with three
settings for coarse, medium and
fine dosing. This feeds into a fully
enclosed nett weigher,
suspended on load cells.
The bags are automatically
fed, positioned and opened
before the product is discharged
from the nett weigher. Once the
bag top is stretched and a deaerator plate presses out excess
air, the filled bag is supported at
the top until the next station.
Here, the bag top is trimmed
before passing to the double
fold-over and glue station. Filled
bags are then transferred on to a
conveyor and through a metal
detector.
Finally, the process is
completed by palletisation and
pallet wrapping. Automated filling
of the paper bags allows tight
presentation on the pallet.

Tomatoes get
PIP treatment
APS Salads, one of the UKʼs
leading tomato packers has
reduced packaging costs with
the installation of a MGS RPP
451 tray denester for its 6-pack
and 8-pack trays, says UK
supplier Partners in Packaging.
The tray denester has a
compact footprint and uses a
system of four rotating pick off
heads, which pick and place the
trays from a single magazine
into the continuously moving
infeed of the flowrapper. An
automatic tomato loader then
feeds tomatoes from both sides
of the infeed into the tray which
is then flowrapped at speeds of
up to 120 packs/minute.
“The required speed of 120
trays/minute is quite high.”
according to APS facilities
director David Pearson “But the
MGS RPP machine has made
major savings to our operation
by reliably denesting 125
micron thickness trays which
are much thinner than the
industry standard 200 micron.”
He added, “It has also led to
less down time on the line due
to misplaced trays. We can now

One of Franceʼs leading fruit
juice makers, Eckes-Granini,
has achieved improvements
to the speed and reliability of
its pallet coding operations
following the installation of
product to pallet coding
technology from Domino
Printing Sciences.
The production capacity at
Eckes-Granini is more than
500,000 bottles and cartons
daily, amounting to an annual
output of 300 million litres.
The company has four
production lines at its Macon site
including two PET blowmoulding
lines each of which fills about
200,000 bottles daily.
Two Domino A200 small
character continuous inkjet
printers have been installed on
each line to apply best before
date and time stamp information.
Three more A200s operate on
the companyʼs Tetra Pak line,
which sees the same data
applied to two litre gable-top
cartons, while an eighth A200 is
positioned on its Ovaline line to
code the companyʼs distinctive
oval ʻJokerʼ juice cartons. At the
secondary level, three Domino

Barr & Paatz (B&P) has
supplied two pre-owned SCARA
type robots to bottle recycler
Trading Green, of Cornwall, to
help perform routine and
potentially hazardous grinding
and annealing functions.
Trading Green transforms
used beer and wine bottles into
an award-winning range of
ʻGreen Glassʼ goblets, flutes
and tumblers.
Automation has freed up
operators and productivity is
claimed to have increased by
45 per cent. B&P supplied a
pre-owned Bosch Rexroth
turboscara SR8, a 4-axis
machine with an 800mm reach,
5kg maximum payload capacity
and repetitive precision of
±0.025mm. It presents the cut
edges of bottles to a grinding
machine, to ensure a perfect fit
between the neck and the base,
for bonding.
The second robot – another
pre-owned turboscara SR8 places product continuously onto
a flame polishing device, which
produces a smooth, melted edge
suitable for drinking. This
function was previously
conducted by hand exposing
workers to extreme heat.
Once the bottles have cooled,
the robot flips them over and
places the product in rows on a
conveyor belt to an annealing
oven for strengthening and
destressing the glass.

Full traceability
first for whisky
Chivas Brothers at Kilmalid,
Dunbartonshire, has
commissioned what is believed
to be the first full traceability
system for whisky. It allows
pallets, cases or bottles sold
anywhere in the world to be
identified by the time and date of
filling, as well as batch or line
number.
Sixteen case labellers and six
pallet labellers have been
supplied by print & apply
labelling specialist Logopak
International to automatically
identify each pallet and case of
bottles, which are individually
coded by ink jet.
"Traceability for the whisky
industry has become increasingly
important as international trade
in complete pallets and cases
has increased," explains
Logopak UK general manager
Wilson Clark. "It means that the
filler can readily identify product
that may have been sold on to a
third party by the original
purchaser."
The Logopak 515 case
labellers are being installed on
each of 16 production lines
running at speeds up to 50
cases/minute. They create EAN
128 labels using data
downloaded via a network from
the distiller's central warehouse
management system. This
includes works order number, lot
code and a sequential number.
Each label is also scanned as it
is applied to ensure legibility.
Further scanners monitor
cases as they enter the
palletisers, identifying each case
and the pallet base number to
the six Logopak 920PF pallet
labellers.
The data is stored and then,
once each pallet is
stretchwrapped, two GS1
compliant labels with a new and
unique SSCC number for each
pallet, generated automatically
by the labellers, are printed and
applied to adjacent sides.
This information, together with
details of each case on the
pallet, is then returned via the
Logopak LEAP controller to the
warehouse management system
to provide an historical record for
product tracing.

Costs, counterfeiting
and consolidation
The pharmaceutical sector is now viewing a
different landscape from the one it was looking at
only two or three years ago. The steady flow of
new drugs has slowed to a trickle while many
major ʻblockbusterʼ products are reaching the end
of their patent protection. Generics and low-cost
drugs are also challenging the sectorʼs ability to
innovate, while the fight against increasing
numbers of counterfeit drugs continues.
And as pharmaceutical companies continue to
consolidate in search of cost savings and product
rationalisation, it all adds up to challenging times
for processing and packaging machinery suppliers.
However it is clear that machinery
manufacturers continue to play a key role in
pharmaceutical production and have the ability to
help companies realise their financial goals, while
at the same time fulfilling the ever tighter
regulatory and security standards required in
todayʼs markets.
Costs
If the last pharmaceutical feature in MU
(November/December 2008) highlighted the
arrival of low cost sourcing, the intervening period
has not lessened this pressure. Instead the
pharmaceutical majors are expecting even more
from their equipment in order to come to grips
with more flexible production (to accommodate
smaller batch sizes), as well as counterfeiting and
brand protection issues.
As Andrew Longworth of Koerber Medipak
commented, “There is a relentless pursuit of
increased OEE (overall equipment effectiveness)
for processing and packaging lines. To meet this
challenge every aspect of machine operation and
performance must be examined and optimised.
“The challenge to the machine manufacturer is
to provide the technologies which enable
minimum downtimes, especially for changeovers,
but also for the routine operations of the
machine.”
He continued, “A direct consequence of the
pursuit of OEE is the examination of overall
equipment lifecycle costs – basically, the costs of
ownership”.
Oystar representative, Derek Moore agrees,
“Companies are looking for tool-less changeovers
and built in CIP (clean in place) as standard. Also
machine footprints are becoming smaller due to
tighter floor space requirements.
“Low cost sourcing of equipment from India and
China is a worrying trend. Most of these lines are
low or medium speed and used for simpler tasks.
But whilst they seem to be good value at the
outset the high running costs due to running
efficiencies, service costs and parts/maintenance
availability can make them expensive in the long
run. They also have to be CE Marked and are
unlikely to be 21CFR PT.11 compliant.”
Longworth added: “Today the fashion for
pharmaceutical equipment is that it is modular in
construction, with mechanically simple,
proprietary, digital servo drives. These have
significant advantages in the cost of ownership
studies.”

The PrintSpect inspection

Cost saving equation

hat about robots as part of the cost
saving equation? Well, while the influx is
not yet dramatic, the use of robots in
clean room functions has been increasing while
the robotic top loading of pharma products into
cartons is replacing sideloaders. Top loading, in
particular, has advantages for smaller batch
sizes, as it offers more flexibility on pack types
and patterns as well as much shorter changeover
times between formats.
Sustainability also plays its part in overall costs
of production. Longworth provides an example:
“For some applications such as pre-filled syringes
that are not terminally sterilised, cartonboard
packaging can show clear advantages. The pack
is mono-material, is readily recycled and offers a
minimum pack volume for a product that requires
cold chain logistics.”
Other material/machine developments show
increased use of single use syringes, glass vials
being replaced by BFS (blow fill seal) installations
for injectable or ophthalmic products and, as
reported in MU March/April 2009, stickpacks are
increasingly popular for some single dose
medicines, particularly digestive treatments. With
the ability to put more and more liquid products in
sticks and the convenience of doses in this
format, usage is likely to show growth well above
the 30 per cent recorded in 2007.

check the provenance of the unit quickly and
easily. Sometimes RFID may be used on the
individual products too, as a customer preference.
Finally, at least for the time being, e-Pedigree
data management software links the whole chain
together. So this ʻchain of custodyʼ will include
manufacturer, contract packer (if used),
wholesaler, distributor and retailer. At every stage
the unique ID of the product is stored along with
other vital information such as batch code, expiry
date, invoicing details and any other data required
for retrieval along any part of the chain.
This may sound simple but it is not and it
comes at a cost. Better counterfeiters will come
up with ways to circumvent even these complex
safeguards. So both existing and new
Security
The principles of tamper evidence and child
resistant closures are well established. But the
need for anti-counterfeiting features in pack
design is becoming increasingly important.
To quote Pat Reynolds, editor of Packaging
World, in a recent article on Brand Authentication,
“Pharmaceutical manufacturers have a real battle
on their hands as the World Health Organisation
estimates that counterfeit drug sales could reach
US$75 bn by 2010.”
Many companies see the first and most obvious
line of defence in 2D datamatrix barcode track
and trace systems, and several companies in the
coding field have developed and installed these at
major pharmaceutical production plants. These
codes can be applied to every component in the
package, for example, carton, tube and even the
leaflet.
Next comes RFID tagging for cases and pallets,
enabling wholesalers, distributors and retailers to
technologies are being developed all the time to
make it harder to copy.
One such security solution from Kodak in the
USA uses a traceless tag which is embedded into
a thermal transfer ribbon. As a label destined for
the product passes through the print head it
receives the traceless tag as well as a human
readable graphic. The tag can be read only by a
laser based reader.
The printer also generates a unique ID on the
label in two formats: a 24 character readable
code and a 2D datamatix bar code. An encryption
device generates a unique serial number with an
algorithm which cannot repeat it.
As Elliott Grant of Yottamark, which makes the
encrypter, explains, “Counterfeiters have no
incentive to make one fake, they need to make an
abundance of fakes to make money. With our
technology we catch you if you try to make up a

number, we catch you if you copy a bunch of
numbers and we catch you if you try to re-use a
set of numbers that have already been used.”
Of course quality of packaging, holograms and
other traditional counterfeiting measures still have
an important part to play. But in this increasingly
sophisticated ʻwarʼ the weaponry is also
becoming more complex and is being led by
machine technologies.
Consolidation
Since the beginning of 2009 Pfizer has
announced its merger with Wyeth, Merck with
Schering-Plough and GlaxoSmithKline has
bought Stiefel. So the pace of consolidation has
increased rapidly as the world economic outlook
has deteriorated.
But in times of economic hardship the
pharmaceutical sector has historically more than
held its own globally, showing growth of 5 per
cent year on year in recent times. The BRIC
economies provide not only low cost
manufacturing platforms but also huge,
expanding markets. So we must look elsewhere
for explanations for this sudden increase in
activity and what the implications are for
machinery suppliers.
Regulatory issues have slowed down the
approval of many new drugs considerably. And
there is an opinion that much of the ʻlow hanging
fruitʼ has already been picked. With many
blockbuster products out, or soon to be out, of
patent protection the search for growth has
returned to acquisitions. The GSK purchase of
Stiefel, for example, opens it up to a range of
proven dermatological products, as well as giving
it access to Stiefelʼs expertise in this area for own
brands.
Rationalisation of resources is always going to
follow. As Derek Moore comments, “Takeovers
and closures mean there is much surplus plant
available. This might be good for upgrades,
spares and re-deployment, but it will dampen new
machinery sales.”
Of course the advance of biopharmaceuticals
and nanotechnology will provide opportunities for
new machinery developments. In addition
differing delivery devices, such as transdermals
and inhalations as well as self-administered
injectables will need different packaging solutions.
While 50 per cent of drugs are still taken orally
and packed in bottles and/or blisters, this means
that 50 per cent are not!
The future
With the latest round of mergers comes the
strong belief in some quarters that
pharmaceutical companies want to divest
themselves of ʻnon coreʼ activities, which in this
case can mean the production and packaging of
their products. Certainly some people think this
will lead to a rise in the size, numbers and
importance of contract manufacturers and
packers.
This can present its own set of opportunities
and challenges. As Alan Green of US contract
manufacturer/packer DPT Laboratories said to
Packaging World recently, “We have to be all
things to all people. Our customers are all over
the map when it comes to what they think they
need in the way of anti-counterfeiting measures…
We have to listen to all of them”*.

have more than one
component additional product
sensors have been built into

operation is then halted until

removed.

Quick release feeder
RNA Automation has
introduced a Quick
Release Bowl Feeder to
meet requirements in the
pharmaceutical sector to
handle individual portion
packs and single-dose
packaging.
The feed system allows
rapid and tool-less
changeover of bowl top in
a matter of seconds,
through a specially
designed pneumatic
clamping mechanism,
states RNA. In cases
where there are different
batches or sizes of component a traditional bowl
feeder has sometimes proved impractical,
particularly in a clean room environment, the
company added.
Ease of cleaning and quick change over of
components are said to be key features, while
cross contamination of batches is greatly reduced
and new products can be added to the production
line at a later date. Another benefit, claims RNA,
is the ability to switch to a spare bowl during the
autoclaving process; again with very little impact
on production downtime.

Stringent verification for OTCs
For Thornton & Ross, the largest independent
OTC pharmaceutical manufacturer in the UK and
owner of brands such as J Collis Browneʼs and
Hedrin, the number of possible combinations of
label, carton and Patient Information Leaflets runs
into thousands.
To address the issue of printed component
verification, the company has traditionally used a
system of stringent, but time consuming, manual
checking, complemented by reconciliation counts.
Due to increased demand for its products and
new machinery investment it decided to look for a
better system and approached Omron.
There were two particular system requirements.
First, any changes to the printed items should not
noticeably degrade their appearance – this was
particularly important for labels and cartons
displayed at point of sale. Second, updating the
system to cater for new products and changes in
existing products should be a fast, easy and
reliable process.
The most obvious solution was to provide each
item with an optically readable code. Unfortunately,
the normal barcodes for this process would have
occupied a considerable amount of space, putting
pressure on the area available for essential
information.
To avoid this, DataMatrix two-dimensional
codes were adopted and providing reading
facilities for the codes was straightforward, as the
Omron optical sensor range includes units
specifically designed for this application.
The printed component verification systems on
all of the Thornton & Ross production lines are
networked via the Ethernet to a single PC running
Omronʼs Excel based data management
software, PLC REPORTER.
The final key item in the project was the
provision of an intuitive operator interface at each
packaging machine. The Omron NS8 colour
touch-screen operator terminals were chosen,
with each terminal being linked to the
programmable controller that handles the printed
item verification on its machine.

Doyen Medipharm has introduced a new

Perfima pan cleans up
Perfima, a perforated pan for complex film
and functional coating processes, from IMA,
incorporates a special Shark Fin baffle. The
pan has the ability to maintain content
uniformity from 25 to 100 per cent of the pan
capacity with no need to change the drum.

outlet air duct allow uniform product drying

The number of counting-head
modules can vary from 3 - 10 to

The counter handles tablets and capsules

New blister line and
filler from Romaco
Romaco presented its new Noack T 4 blister
packaging line. Its QuickFeed, QuickAdjust and
QuickTransfer systems, provide high levels of
flexibility, particularly for small and medium batch
sizes at up to 400 blisters/minute, says the
company. Short conversion times, increased
productivity and minimal life-cycle costs are other
features of the line.
The company also showcased its new aseptic
liquid filler Macofar VF 24 for pharmaceutical
parenterals and lyophilized products. With a
maximum output of 24,000 vials/hour the slim
designed and GMP-standardised plant it is
claimed to achieve high product safety.
The patented QuickFeed unit has an air
cushion adjustment system which allows product
changeover in seconds. To do this, the product
feed is completely detached and cleaned
separately while production can be continued
using a second ready-tooled feed unit.
The servo-controlled QuickAdjust station
control system automatically adjusts production to
the sealing, coding, perforating and punching
stations. A laser light barrier determines the exact
position of the blister and automatically moves the
complete station to the optimal position.
Use of the four-track QuickTransfer blister
transfer station allows blister layouts in
longitudinal- and cross-positions. Using a pickand-place system, the blisters can be turned
through 90° before being fed to the stacking
system prior to cartoning.
The Noack T 4 comprises the compact Noack
N 930 blister packaging machine and a Promatic
PC 4000 series cartoner. According to customer
preference, the installation can be equipped with
plate or roller sealing.
The aseptic liquid filler Macofar VF 24 is
designed for filling liquid or lyophilized
pharmaceutical products. One of its key features
is the slim design. The horizontal distance
between the feeding hoses and the machine front
is less than 600mm, and space in the ʻwhite areaʼ
is reduced to a minimum. The vertical distance
between the machine base and the filling area is
big enough to avoid any turbulence or particles
around the open bottles. The unit fulfils the
requirements of GMP for aseptic production
processes in the cleanroom class “Grade A”.
This medium speed machine offers an output of
24,000 vials/hour. All drives utilise servo motors to
allow accurate and reproducible processes. The
integrated weighing stations check the weight of

Domino Printing Sciences says the recent
technology innovations it showcased respond to
the widespread migration from linear barcodes to
2D codes for unique identification within the
pharmaceutical and chemical sectors.
Importantly the latest systems support different
kinds of application needs, including unique EPC
serial numbers, 2D datamatrix codes and RFID
technology.
As Domino can offer a multi-substrate, fastdrying ink, the G-Series thermal inkjet printer
(TIJ), launched in late 2008, now has an
expanded range of compatible print materials,
opening up new application possibilities for
manufacturers, says the company.
The capability to switch between water- and
ethanol-based inks enables printing onto porous
and non-porous materials, unlike other TIJ
solutions, which are typically restricted to slowerdrying, water-based options.

leaflet feeding
A CP600 blister packing machine with a new
high-GM product feeding zone was a major
feature of the Koerber Medipak stand.
The machine, which is capable of
producing 600 blisters/minute, was linked to
the new Mediseal 3200 cartoner with an
output of up to 300 cartons/minute. This
machine incorporates a number of
enhancements, including what the company
describes as a ʻrevolutionaryʼ leaflet feed.
Also shown was the P1600 cartoner with
in-line blister printing via the BIB-BOB infeed

This format is proving particularly popular for
pre-filled syringes where a number of

The Marchesini Group exhibited complete
line technologies plus new machines and

For liquid pharmaceuticals the company
introduced a new ampoule line made up of the
continuous rotary washing machine WRA24-8,
a new sterilisation tunnel with cold chamber
NLT60S-C and an ampoule filling-sealing

For the syringe market, the group showed
its machine model FSP10, for filling and

There was also the preview of its robotic
line, the Unica that is able to integrate the

demonstrated Integra 300, an integrated
robotic blister line which incorporates the two
thermoforming (blistering) and carton
packaging processes in one monobloc unit,
for a production rate of 300 blisters/minute.
To demonstrate its technology for
serialisation of pharmaceutical products, the
group presented two versions of the new
labelling machine BL40. These machines
apply and check tracking codes of
pharmaceutical products and also labels with
different code combinations.

device wets the cotton via a
peristaltic pump. The liquid,
which can be a cream,
perfume or insect repellent, is
then absorbed and the
towelette expands. In its
compressed form the product
is 20mm diameter and 10mm
thickness, but can fold out as
large as 320 x 250mm.

No close shaves
with OCS weighers
Five existing production lines at Rudolf
Dankwardt, of Germany, have been equipped with
OCS checkweighers, to ensure product stability
and accurate weighing of aerosol cans is
maintained at rates of 150 pieces/minute, says
the company.
In order to meet expanding demand for its
contract packing services for the production filling
and packaging of aerosols an additional site at
Jessenitz-Werk/Lübtheen will extend the
production capacity further, again using OCS
equipment.
A continuous flow of touching, shaving foam
cans are fed from the filler. Each individual can is
checked for its correct weight before packing.
Typically aerosol cans are difficult to handle
and will easily fall over. OCS engineers have
developed a solution that ensures optimal
product handling using the bypass transfer
system. Aerosol cans are smoothly brought to
the infeed conveyor where a screw conveyor
accelerates them and provides the necessary
distance between them for the weighing process,
explains OCS.
Over/underweight cans are removed using the
customerʼs flipper reject system. Cans with the
correct weight are gently passed onto the outfeed
conveyor for final packaging and shipping to the
customer. In this case 16 cans are packed into
one carton which is finally checked by a heavy
duty EC-M-SL checkweigher.
The bypass system provides excellent product
handling in combination with reliable and precise
weighing for aerosol cans, claims OCS.

shaving foam and similar products.

Cooler cosmetics from Barcelona
Antonio Mengibar of Barcelona, represented in
the UK by Holmach, has introduced a mix and fill
technology to allow a cosmetic base product to be
mixed in the filling manifold with a colour or
fragrance immediately prior to filling into the
container.
This allows temperature sensitive ingredients to
have minimum exposure to gelling and other
agents, which is especially useful if the product
becomes more viscous as it cools, explains
Holmach.
Mengibar has recently patented both rotary and
inline filling technology that eliminates the need for
bottom-up filling (where the nozzle is inserted into
the container) on foaming products. The ʻLow
Reynoldsʼ laminar flow nozzle eliminates air from
the product, and as a result there is no turbulence
on filling. Ideal for hair care and nail polishes, the
technology lends itself to ATEX applications where
flammability is an issue, says Holmach. Coupled
with flow meter filling, changeover is simplified and
mechanical maintenance minimised.
Mengibar also designs fitment and pump
applicators and trigger pump cappers. Recent
liquid candle and other ʻaircareʼ products have
seen the use of dual compartment containers for
fragrance and oil with automatic wick insertion.
Trigger pump cappers with automatic sorting of
pumps and automatic rotary capping can achieve
speeds of 60 - 400 containers/minute.
