“She went well under her regular work rider,” Smerdon told ANZ
Bloodstock News. “She didn’t do too much, just went a half mile pace.
“She travelled over well. She took a few days to settle in but now
she’s ok and I’m very happy with her.”
It was confirmed last week that Shamal Wind will be ridden at
Ascot by Ryan Moore. Moore bagged two of Australia’s biggest
races last year when partnering Adelaide (Galileo) and Protectionist
(Monsun) to victory in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) respectively.

Smerdon was out walking the course at Ascot yesterday and was
impressed with the condition of the track.
“It’s beautiful ground,” he told ANZ Bloodstock News. “It has a
really lush cover of grass on it. At the moment, it’s perfect.”
Plans for the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale
Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) and Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m)
winner Brazen Beau will be finalised later in the week by trainer Chris
Waller. The colt holds entries in both Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes
and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) four days later, and it was
revealed yesterday that Craig Williams has been booked to ride
should he run in the latter, which appears to be the preferred option.
Regular partner Joao Moreira will ride if Brazen Beau takes up his
engagement in the King’s Stand Stakes. However, he is prevented
from doing so in the Diamond Jubilee due to his commitments in
Hong Kong.
“Chris gets here on Thursday,” Grant Morgan, managing director
of owners Ontrack Thoroughbreds, said. “I want him to make a call on
a King’s Stand or Diamond Jubilee run after he sees the horse here.
“There’s no point rushing decisions like this, we want to get it
right.
“Chris is leaning towards the Diamond Jubilee but there isn’t too
much in it.”
While Moreira rode Brazen Beau to win both his Group One races,
Williams was on board when the colt ran second to Lankan Rupee
(Redoute’s Choice) on his penultimate start in the Lightning Stakes
(Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington.
“Craig knows the horse very well having ridden him in two trials as
well as a second in the Lightning Stakes,” Morgan said.
“He also has extensive experience in the UK and Royal Ascot.”

STATES WORKING TOGETHER ON COBALT CASES
R
acing Victoria and Racing NSW stewards are to work
together on the ongoing cobalt cases.
This announcement comes following allegations
against some members of the Flemington Equine
Clinic at Tuesday’s Racing NSW inquiry into the cobalt and caffeine
charges against Rosehill trainer Sam Kavanagh.
At the core of this cobalt case is the allegation that Sam
Kavanagh paid cash for two bottles labelled ‘vitamin complex’ from
Flemington Equine Clinic vet Dr Tom Brennan.
“The evidence is he bought two products of a certain product
off Tom Brennan, now Dr Tom Brennan denies that,” Murrihy said.
“There is certain evidence within his clinic of it being posted to

“It might give the public a bit of an idea the work that has gone
on behind the scenes since these notifications happened,” Racing
NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy told racing.com’s Racing Ahead on
RSN.
“There’s been a lot of interviews and investigations - I think
there’s over 100 pieces of evidence we have in front of us.
“We’re grateful we’ve entered into an information-sharing
agreement that’s quite unique because the veterinary practice is in

The inquiry is continuing.
NIKOLIC’S PARTNER CHARGED OVER LAY BETS
The partner of suspended jockey Danny Nikolic, Tania Hyett,
has been charged for placing lay bets on horses trained by Robert

The case against Kavanagh is closely linked to two of the ongoing
Victorian investigations, with Danny O’Brien and Sam Kavanagh
having used the same vet at the time their horses recorded positive
34 bets laying Smerdon-trained horses through her Betfair
account.
Racing Victoria stewards charged her yesterday for contravening
the rule that bans any person employed by a trainer laying horses
readings to cobalt.
Some of the evidence being used in the NSW case will be
from that stable.
Also yesterday, Nikolic was escorted from the restricted area of

“Tim Robertson (RV’s chief investigator) sat throughout the

FIRST SEASON SIRE PROFILE TORONADO
thursday 11 june 2015 ANZ
OVERVIEW
Unquestionably one of the best milers in Britain in recent years,
Toronado (High Chaparral) was the first stallion announced to shuttle
to Swettenham Stud as part of the operations link-up with his owner,
Al Shaqab Racing.
Trained by Richard Hannon throughout his career, first by senior
and then junior, Toronado made a winning debut over six and a half
furlongs at Newbury in June 2012 and followed that up with victory
in the Winkfield Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Ascot just over a month later.
He rounded out his three-start two-year-old career with a win in
the Champagne Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Doncaster and confirmed himself
a serious 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) prospect with victory in the Craven
Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) on his three-year-old debut in April 2013.

Earlier Group One contests during the program were the JJ Atkins
Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m).
Having finished second in the last two renewals of the JJ Atkins
Stakes and on both occasions behind a Gai Waterhouse-trained
runner, Chris Waller went one better last Saturday courtesy of Press
Statement (Hinchinbrook) [114p].
Stud Stakes is perhaps the most likely option.
Interstate Raiders continued their dominance of the Queensland
Derby this time with Magicool (Fastnet Rock) [111] flying the flag for
the Garden State.
Under the guidance of James Winks, Magicool worked up to
midfield and while wide had the benefit of cover.
Positioned perfectly by jockey Tye Angland, one out and one
back, Press Statement was too strong for the likes of Sagaronne (Real
Saga) and Look To The Stars (I Am Invincible) late.
The improvement Press Statement has produced is impressive
through three career outings.
Whilst always covering extra ground, Magicool was into the clear
and prominent on straightening.
The son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) let down well in the straight and
collared leader Sadler’s Lake (High Chaparral) inside the 100 metres.
He drew clear for a three quarter length success over an unlucky
